2007-2016:

HINAL NARAYAN SOLANKI I am Hinal Solanki, a student of Rachana Sansad’s Academy of Architecture, currently in my fourth year, aspiring to join hands in making this world a better place for living in shapes and forms. What fascinates me is how such a simple brick wall can impact so much in its surroundings and create an influence on each mind. Inorder to understand that further and explore the psychology behind spaces not only for humans but for animal species as well, i have developed an affinity for healthcare , modular , sustainable and flexible spaces as well as experiential spaces and also love playing with various materials and befriending them. Looking forward to tap into various subjects and further expand my knowledge and develop an area of expertise as an architect. With a vision to create something worthwhile for the world, I am looking forward to your perfect guidance in practicality and i assure to make the most of it .

VETERINARY INSTITUTE AND HOSPITAL LOWER PAREL ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO | SEMESTER 6 FACULTY: Ar. Mahesh Khanolkar The intention of the design was to create comfortable and anthropometrc spaces for both the users i.e animals species as well as humans. The use of natural materials such as exposed bricks and treated bamboos for animal specific spaces and the traditional concrete for the structures specifically deisgned for humans was the main designing criteria. The curation of the spaces was done to enhance human animal interaction and ease of access of required functions from each other.

SOLAR DECATHLON WORLI KOLIWADA , MODULAR COMPETITION | SEMESTER 5-6 Solar decathlon India (SDI) is a national level competition which aims to incorporate sustainability and make it f undamental for upcoming architects and engineers to come up with real life scale able design innovations which will help the world. It aims to develop net-zero solutions and help empower young professionals combat climate change efficiently in the building sector. The competition encourages teams to partner with faculties, real estate developers, and other industry organisations. Vihaan was designed as a modular community resilience centre made with the use of shipping containers. Shipping containers were chosen as they had an structural advantage and the centre could be built in the minimum amount of time. Vihaan is not only a modular , adaptable and earthquake resistant solution but also has net positive potential for water usage, reduced energy usage as compared to other solutions and is highly scalable at almost any location. The team optimised facade orientation for controlling thermal comfort and incorporated an app to guide panic stricken people to their respective resilient centre. The app and libraries , workshop spaces and many other functions helped us in community incorporation and overall humanisation of the centre which would function as a community centre during normal times. The aim was to understand vernacular construction and getting hands- on experience with the two materials i.e Bamboo and Brick to understand the construction process and the raw and natural beauty of these materials.

MATERIAL EXPLORATION Exploring Bamboo and bricks ELECTIVE | SEMESTER 3 Groupwork

Plumb line tool was used to check the alignment of stacked bricks to ensure a straight wall

BRICK: Learnt the process of brick making right from the start. Hands-on experience to construct an arch with the understanding of importance of the quality of bricks used, the quality and correct consistency of mortar, total drying time and the alignment and common errors

Stacking bricks and applying mortar to ensure that the bricks stick to each other

PROCESS 1: Creating base shape for the arch formation

PROCESS 4: Testing the final outcome

Applying mortar evenly with the help of trowel leaving a little gap from the edge to avoid spilling after brick placement

Adding finishing touches and leaving it to dry for minimum 24 hours

PROCESS 2: Constructing the arch over the base

PROCESS 3: Leaving it to dry for a minimum of 24 hours

STEP 1: Digging the ground to create a pit deep enough to install pipe for foundation of the bamboo

BAMBOO: The natural qualities of bamboo and its usage in full potential was learnt.

STEP 2: Installing the bamboos in the foundation pit and filling it with mud to strengthen it

BAMBOO CANOPY WITH BRICK SEATING

STEP 3:Cut the bamboo into half for flexibilty and attach it in the desired position

Mould for casting

Thread layout while casting

Casting of concrete

The aim was to explore the constituents of general cement concrete and understand its durability and strength with experimenting on various subsitute materials and carrying out several tests. On the basis of these explorations and analysis , we further went on to testing concrete mixtures with new materials with an intention to create smoother surfaces, light weight concrete batches and structurally stronger substitutes. Taking into consideration the inferences from each of these experiments , a furniture from cement was created that revolved around the principles of flexibilty, comfort, anthropometry with an unexplored combination of materials.

EXPLORATIONS 1. CERAMIC CLAY 2. CEMENT 3. WOOD

The aim of these explorations was to get familiar with the different kinds of material that are used in designing and then apply that knowledge to make maximum utilisation of the material’s potential and design a truly functional and purposeful space. Ceramic, being a highly utilised material in each house makes it extremely beneficial to understand the way the material responds . Wood, a highly aesthetic material and predominantly used for furniture in almost every living space is a perfect material to play with and experiment various forms and utilities. Cement, that moulds and takes the shape of any desired form is a wonderful material to be explored to be used to its maximum potential.
