Madeleine K. Albright lived a life of service, leadership, and firsts. She shattered the glass ceiling when she was sworn in as America’s first female Secretary of State in 1997, becoming at the time the highest serving woman in the history of the United States government.
Born Marie Jana Körbelová in Prague, Czechoslovakia on May 15, 1937, her family fled in 1939 to London after Germany invaded Czechoslovakia. Albright attended school in Switzerland at age 10 and there took the name Madeleine. After the war, her family left London and returned to Czechoslovakia, where in 1948 democracy was extinguished by a communist coup. Her father, a diplomat and academic who opposed communism, sought asylum for the family in the United States, where he became a professor of international studies at the University of Denver. Albright spent her teenage years in Colorado and then moved east, graduating from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and earning her doctorate at Columbia University in New York.
After starting her family, she moved to her longtime home in Washington, D.C., where she raised her children and continued her studies. Ever the student, she surrounded herself with books lining the shelves of nearly every room. Topics ranged from literature to signed biographies and memoirs of past and current political leaders including Senator Edward Kennedy (Lot 70) and Stacey Abrams (Lot 66) to her Russian and Polish language dictionaries (two of the six languages that Albright spoke), and complete sets of Encyclopedia Britannica (Lot 74), where she worked as a picture editor just after graduating from college. Many of these books are available for auction.
It was not until 1976, when she was 39, that she began her first full-time government job becoming the chief legislative assistant for U.S. Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine. A few years later, when President Jimmy Carter was elected, Albright moved from working in Congress to the White House under National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski as part of the National Security Council staff. She then became a professor at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and served as the Director of its Women in Foreign Service Program. She loved teaching and her students loved her, voting her best professor four years in a row. In addition to lessons on international policy and foreign affairs, Albright taught her students, especially the female students, to interrupt, rather than raise their hands and wait to be called upon. But, she also said “if you’re going to interrupt, you have to know what you’re talking about. And you have to do it in a strong voice.”
When elected president in 1992, Bill Clinton appointed Albright to serve as Ambassador to the United Nations, making the position a member of his cabinet. In 1996, President Clinton nominated then-Ambassador Albright to serve as Secretary of State. In accepting the nomination, she praised her predecessor Secretary of State Warren Christopher and stated: “I can only hope that my heels can fill your shoes.” She was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 99 to 0 on January 22, 1997.
On her first day as Secretary, Albright walked down the corridor of the State Department to her new office passing the paintings of former Secretaries—all men with whiskers and suits—knowing that the walls were shaking and a glass ceiling shattered. During her fouryear tenure as Secretary of State, Albright championed
America’s alliances, promoted the expansion of NATO, supported non-proliferation efforts, successfully pressed for intervention in Kosovo in 1999, and supported the expansion of free trade and democracy.
As Ambassador to the United Nations and Secretary of State, Albright was often the only woman in the room during critical discussions with her diplomatic colleagues and counterparts, who were virtually all men. In such gatherings, Albright followed the advice she had given as a professor to her female students: “Do not be afraid to interrupt. A woman usually prefers to size up a situation before speaking, but for a diplomat representing the United States, silence was not an option.”
During her trailblazing diplomatic career, Secretary Albright discovered the power of jewelry to convey foreign policy messages. As shared in Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat’s Jewel Box, she deployed pins within her “personal diplomatic arsenal” to express her hopes, mood, and often a pointed message. She utilized this unconventional and effective tool for diplomacy on America’s behalf. Albright said the pins served as “gentle implements of statecraft, teaching tools and a different form of communication.” She knew that the idea of using pins as a diplomatic tool was not found in any State Department manual or text chronicling American foreign policy. She explained that “the truth is that it would never have happened if not for Saddam Hussein.”
The poet-in-residence of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein called Albright “an unparalleled serpent” when she was the Ambassador to the United Nations. In response, Albright began to wear a pin with a serpent wrapped around a stick. After that, Albright chose pins ahead of meetings with foreign dignitaries to
signal her diplomatic position. Albright went on to collect many hundreds of pins, many of which she arranged for the donation to the National Museum of American Diplomacy at the U.S. Department of State in Washington D.C. Included in this sale are many other signature pins and jewelry that she wore throughout her life and career — including those worn at celebrated events and special occasions.
After leaving government, Secretary Albright returned to teaching at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and co-founded Albright Stonebridge Group, now part of Dentons Global Advisors, and Albright Capital Management. She also continued her lifelong commitment to public service by serving as Chair of the National Democratic Institute and President of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, as well as Honorary Co-Chair of the World Refugee Council. She was a lifetime trustee of The Aspen Institute, where she established the Aspen Minister’s Forum to strengthen diplomatic ties and develop concrete policy recommendations to support key international institutions. She established the Albright Institute at Wellesley College to shape the next generation of global leaders. And, she was appointed Chair of the Defense Policy Board, a group tasked with providing the Secretary of Defense with independent, informed advice and opinion concerning matters of defense policy.
Secretary Albright was a seven-time New York Times bestselling author. She said that “the best book, like the best speech, will do it all — make us laugh, think, cry and cheer — preferably in that order.” Her books include her autobiography, Madam Secretary: A Memoir (2003); The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God, and World Affairs (2006); Memo to the President: How We Can Restore America’s Reputation
and Leadership (2008); Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat’s Jewel Box (2009); Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War, 1937-1948 (2012, see Lot 56), Fascism: A Warning (2018, see Lot 61); and, Hell and Other Destinations (2020).
For her service to America, President Barack Obama awarded Secretary Albright the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in May 2012. While presenting the award, President Obama remarked:
As the first woman to serve as America’s top diplomat, Madeleine’s courage and toughness helped bring peace to the Balkans and paved the way for progress in some of the most unstable corners of the world. And as an immigrant herself — the granddaughter of Holocaust victims who fled her native Czechoslovakia as a child — Madeleine brought a unique perspective to the job. This is one of my favorite stories. Once, at a naturalization ceremony, an Ethiopian man came up to her and said, ‘Only in America can a refugee meet the Secretary of State.’ And she replied, ‘Only in America can a refugee become the Secretary of State.’
Secretary Albright said that in receiving the award, she “was completely overwhelmed and almost speechless because it is the highest civilian honor. And nothing makes me prouder than to have represented the United States abroad and to sit behind the sign that says United States and to be an American.” She donated the award for public display to the National Museum of American Diplomacy at the U.S. Department of State.
As an immigrant from a country that suffered the tyrannies of fascism, Secretary Albright consistently
stood up for human rights and freedom. Throughout her life, she remained a steadfast and forceful advocate for supporting refugees, strengthening international institutions, and investing in American diplomacy.
Asked to describe herself in six words, Albright said she was a “worried optimist, problem solver, and grateful American.” Sharing her gratitude with others, she often carried with her the U.S. Constitution; surrounded herself with patriotic objects of American history; and displayed the American flag proudly in her home and office. The sale of The Private Collection of Secretary Madeleine K. Albright presents the singular opportunity to acquire some of these objects of American history that Albright collected from her travels across the globe and that she cherished throughout her life.
Secretary Albright passed away on March 23, 2022 in Washington, D.C. Writing several months before her death, Albright reflected:
To me, resilience of spirit (far more than brilliance of intellect) is the essential ingredient of a full life. No matter how smart we are, we can allow sorrows and grievances to overwhelm us, or we can respond positively to setbacks — be they caused by our own misjudgments or by forces beyond our control.... Clearly, our future leaders will have to be gutsy and resourceful, and so, each in our own way, will we. To those who despair of that possibility, I have a measure of sympathy but little patience. There is no shortage of worthwhile work to be done and ... no surplus of seasons in which to achieve our goals. So let us buckle our boots, grab a cane if we need one, and march.
Indeed, freedom and democracy had no greater champion than Secretary Madeleine K. Albright.

Although her method of communication was new, her message was as old as the American Revolution – Don’t Tread on Me! From that day on, pins became part of her diplomatic signature.
