Welcome to Freeman’s | Hindman

Since assuming the role of Chief Executive Officer over two years ago, I’ve had the privilege of leading our firm through a pivotal moment in its history. At the beginning of 2024, I am proud to have overseen the landmark merger of Chicago-based Hindman Auctions and Philadelphia-based Freeman’s, resulting in the formation of Freeman’s | Hindman. With this merger, we now stand as America’s oldest auction house—founded in 1805—and have created a strategic alliance that gives us the largest coast-to-coast presence of any auction house in the country.

Our combined firm has hit the ground running—the first year was marked by significant achievements, including the highest-performing year to date for our Jewelry and Watches department, an exceptional array of single-owner collections, and impressive single-lot results. Despite the challenges of the current market, we have significantly expanded our reach, attracting 33% new bidders to the firm and achieving an impressive 88% average sell-through rate by lot. This strong performance underscores our unwavering commitment to growth as we evolve in an ever-changing landscape.

Looking ahead, our team is gearing up to offer an exciting lineup of events across our national footprint. We look forward to connecting with you at various fairs, conferences, and trade shows this winter and spring. We’re especially delighted to be part of Americana Week and Asia Week in New York this January and March, marking our inaugural participation in these events. Additionally, our robust calendar of more than 140 auctions continues to expand, highlighted by standout single-owner collections plus specialized sales across categories.

Still, at Freeman’s | Hindman, we are committed to maintaining our client-centric mentality. Our business is relationship-based, and our team is willing to go the extra mile for our clients. Many of the collections we have handled were the result of longterm relationships that were built over the course of many years. With this recent phase of growth for the company, we feel that we will simply be able to better serve our clients—whether that is hosting previews and events closer to home or engaging new, international bidders in our sales to achieve stellar results.

I, along with my dedicated team, look forward to presenting exceptional auctions across our six salerooms in Chicago, Cincinnati, Denver, Palm Beach, Philadelphia, and New York. We invite you to visit us in person or bid online via our proprietary Digital Bid Room or partner online platforms from anywhere around the globe. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our experienced team with any questions you may have concerning auction, private sale, appraisal, or advisory needs.

Yours sincerely,

Freeman’s | Hindman is a leading fine art and luxury business providing collectors, fiduciaries, and institutions with a comprehensive suite of services including auctions, appraisals, private sales, and art advisory.

PROGRAMMING AND PARTNERSHIPS

Critical to our success in achieving outstanding results for our consignors and buyers is a national commitment to delivering powerful client engagement opportunities through creative programming and brand partnerships. For example, the unprecedented growth and success of our New York office has gone hand-in-hand with our strategic approach to client development in the region, led by Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Gemma Sudlow.

Thoughtful partnerships and client engagement opportunities created in collaboration with key brands in the fashion, luxury, media, publishing, design, and art fair sectors have included Carolina Herrera, Hodinkee, The Baer Faxt, Rizzoli, Another Tomorrow, The Winter Show, Salon Art and Design, and The Design Leadership Network. This programmatic approach to in-person activations, combined with targeted digital and print advertising, resulted in the firm quadrupling its sales in the New York region since 2022, bringing more new buyers and consignors than ever before to our suite of services at the center of the global art market.
