Fr A nk L LO y D Wright: A M AS t E r M in D OF A ME ri CA n Art S A n D Cr AF t S
“We were excited to acquire the urn from the Waller Family Estate auction conducted by hanzel Auction galleries in the mid 60s and enjoyed it for many years. We are very pleased to see the urn has been in good hands.” - Marilyn and Wilbert r. hasbrouck
In the 1890s, the Arts and Crafts Movement was spreading from its original roots in England to America. Several architects were quick to react to the ideals and the aesthetics that would have a major impact on American architectural design, including Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright came to be revered as one of the twentieth century’s greatest architects and popularized many aspects of organic architecture. The Prairie School became synonymous with the Movement.
Early in Wright’s career the combination of circles and squares joining in harmonious arrangement appears in his sketches and insignia. This idea of synchronization would later play a major role in the design of his exemplary copper urn. Even though the ideology of the Arts and Crafts Movement was to pay particular attention to the handicraft, the urn also employed the use of machinery. Wright went against the grain of others by accepting the machine as a means of accomplishing something the craftsman could not. Using hand hammered copper sheets that were ultimately welded together, not only were the circles and squares fused, but handicraft and machinery were blended into a masterwork of design. Examples of Wright’s urns are found in his Oak Park home and studio and were often focal points, accented with alternating plants respective to the time of year. Other early examples were included in the 1899 remodeling of the Edward C. Waller house located in River Forest, Illinois; an urn was originally placed on the newel post of the entrance (fig. 1), while another period photograph shows two urns flanking a long window bench in the dining room of the house. Additionally, urns were employed in the homes of Avery Coonley and Susan Lawrence Dana, as well as in Browne’s Bookstore.
It is still uncertain how many urns were produced, but very few exist in museums, institutions and private collections around the world. Publicly known locations include the collections of the Chicago History Museum, the Dana-Thomas House Foundation, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Rarely does one of Wright’s urns become available to the public. The urn is a quintessential example of decorative art from the Arts and Crafts Movement.
