The Collection of Barbara and Robert (Bob) P. Hunter, Jr. Alpharetta, Georgia

I have known Barbara Hunter and her late husband, Bob, for nearly 20 years. Their enthusiasm for collecting nearly everything was obvious from our initial introduction and their capacity for connoisseurship was equally impressive. Among all the collectors I have worked with, they had among the most discerning eyes, and the ability to determine the outstanding producers in each collecting category they tackled. As a result, over time their collection grew in its size and importance.

The Hunter Collection features some of the brightest names in Contemporary Western Art. Barbara and Bob loved to travel the West, making friends along the way. On their collecting odysseys, they visited other collectors, artists, galleries and museums. They delighted in finding new artists and offering their patronage or finding new collectors to mentor and assist in curating their holdings. These activities were carried out with an eye toward growing the Western art world as we know it, providing the field with many new friends to make and more important artists to collect. They did not consider themselves the owners of the art, but rather the custodians for this generation. As their collection outgrew the space available, they were quite generous with providing the Booth Western Art Museum with gifts of paintings and sculpture, often multiple very nice pieces per year. Somehow, their collection never seemed to telescope but rather, it seems they bought a couple more pieces each time they gifted one. They had a voracious appetite for acquisitions, so much so they had to remove the doors off several closets throughout their home to create mini galleries for their treasures.

They were heavily involved with the Booth Museum, being among the first to join as Circle Members and always on hand for major exhibition openings. They were also patrons of several other museums and arts organizations. In addition to Booth outings, for several years they traveled with the Eiteljorg’s Western Art Society on collector trips to art-rich regions.

With a generous spirit, when they would come across a special work, they would champion its importance, while being careful not to oversell. Still, it was always obvious to me when they found a special piece to add to their collection. In addition to helping build the Booth collection with donations, they also advocated for strategic acquisitions, and their collecting enthusiasm was infectious. The collection is better for having acted on their advice on occasion and their contribution to the permanent collection will be appreciated for generations to come.

For the Hunters it was a life well-lived among the myriad collections they assembled, and now it offers the opportunity to share the art they collected, loved and protected with the next generation of enthusiastic custodians.

$200,000 - 300,000 During the last decade of his life, Frederic Remington was fascinated by the optical effects of moonlight. He worked intensely to capture the elusive nocturnal effects in some of his evocative and dramatic late paintings. Many of these pictures, like The “Hold-Up” represent the high point of Remington’s mature late work.

The “Hold-Up”, 1902, is a large picture, more than a yard wide. It is an image by Remington which illustrated “Ranson’s Folly,” Richard Harding Davis’ serialized story which appeared in Collier’s Magazine in May of 1902. Davis was a leading writer and magazine editor (Harper’s and Collier’s), with whom Remington had worked previously. Davis’ “Ranson’s Folly” tells the story of a flamboyant and boyishly likeable Lieutenant Ranson, who has been stationed at Fort Crockett out on the western prairie. In the story, a highwayman known as the Red Rider had been periodically robbing the stage coach at gun point as it made its way at night from Kiowa City to the fort. The Red Rider was so named because of the red bandana that masked the robber’s face.

Ranson, with a playful spirit of adventure, decided to demonstrate how easy it is to hold up a stage, and he intends to do so without a gun. So, he dressed up like the actual Red Rider with poncho, sombrero and red bandana. Ranson then set out to rob the stage at night only armed with the pair of scissors he used to cut eye holes in the bandana.

The Hold-Up depicts the most dramatic moment in “Ranson’s Folly.” Lieutenant Ranson is seen at the lower right brandishing his pair of steel shears in his right hand while holding a sombrero in his left hand. Both the shears and the spur on one of Ranson’s boots glitter in the moonlight. The side of the coach and the road the coach traverses are starkly yet brilliantly illuminated by moonlight. The stage coach driver has just reined in his four horses. Each beautifully painted horse strains to pull back, and the coachman looks directly at the figure of the gesturing highwayman. Both coach and coachman are silhouetted against an utterly clear, star filled night sky.

The sharply diagonal structure of the painting is one of Remington’s favorite pictorial constructions, and it here recalls a painting from the prior year, 1901, The Old Stage-Coach of the Plains (Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth). The sympathetically depicted horses, the moment of high drama and confrontation, the humorous and good-natured escapade of Lieutenant Ranson are quintessential examples of Remington’s mature artistry, set out in the twinkling half-light of a moonlit night.

The bluffs out of picture to the left was the old Custer battlefield, and all round here the Indians were camped before the battle. Fiesta Day is a great example of a Sharp impressionistic Crow encampment in the Montana winter landscape, painted at the height of his career. He was witness to, and chronicler of, the rapidly changing cultural traditions of Plains people, Crow and Blackfeet in particular. Because of the friendships he forged with Native peoples he was able to document people and events that otherwise might not have been recorded.

With the help of S.G. Reynolds, Indian Agent at the Crow reservation, Sharp built a cabin which he named Absarokee Hut, after his Crow (Absarokee) hosts. The location of his studio and cabin are still visible from the Crow Agency town plaza. The cabin, thanks to Forrest Fenn, author of the J.H. Sharp biography, is now on display at Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, WY.

When Emil Bisttram first visited New Mexico in 1930, he was overwhelmed by the seemingly endless scenery, the shocking brightness and the expansive landscape. Having spent the most formative years of his life in New York city, surrounded by bustling people and ever-growing buildings, this hardly seems surprising. He would soon fall in love with the New Mexican landscape, though. With an education that included the National Academy of Art and Design, Cooper’s Union and The Art Student’s League, Bisttram had some of the most important names of the early 20th century art world on his resume. Even with his impressive east coast credentials, though, it was in the American Southwest where he found his renown.

Bisttram had the education, skills and wherewithal to make a living and earn the respect of the New Mexican art community with his representational work. Still, his true passion was abstract art. Free from the confines of representing the natural world, he employed Dynamic Symmetry and the Golden Ratio to create highly organized, totally unstructured works of abstraction. Bisttram believed that creative endeavors should be life-affirming, and he used color, space and light in his nonobjective art to help stimulate deep thought and induce spiritual epiphanies.

For decades prior to Emil Bisttram’s arrival, New Mexico had attracted some of the Southwest’s most accomplished artists including Joseph Henry Sharp, Eanger Irving Couse, Bert Geer Phillips and Ernest Martin Hennings. There was a reverence for representational, academic art that was felt throughout the New Mexican art scene. Bisttram’s use of a modern, totally nonobjective aesthetic certainly ruffled feathers amongst the academicians and critics. Still, this dramatic, new style brought a fresh and positive impact to the Southwest that can still be felt today.
