AMERICAN FURNITURE AND DECORATIVE ARTS

Alva B. Maxey-Boyd was a retired professor of sociology from Northeastern Illinois University. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Talladega College in Alabama, she received two master’s degrees, one from Oberlin College and one from Case Western University. Alva then went on to receive her doctorate degree from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada.
In 1948, Alva and her husband Chicago attorney Charles W. Boyd, both of whom had a great interest in architecture, purchased the historic Wood House. A Queen Anne mansion built for George Ellery Wood in 1885, the Wood House was designed by architect John C. Cochrane and built along South Prairie Avenue in one of Chicago’s most prestigious neighborhoods at that time.
As Chicago’s urban renewal program of the 1950s demolished most of the opulent homes along South Prairie Avenue, Charles’ legal expertise and dedication to the preservation of this important home enabled him to present and win several court cases against the City of Chicago, protecting the Wood-Maxey-Boyd House from demolition. The restoration and preservation of the mansion became Alva’s hobby which continued into her retirement years. In October 2003, after Alva gave one final impassioned speech before the Commission of Chicago Landmarks, the Wood-MaxeyBoyd house was designated a city landmark.
