Notes:
William MacMonnies is one of the most revered American artists of the Beaux-Arts School in France. An expatriate for most of his adult career, MacMonnies was born in 1863 to Scottish immigrants in Brooklyn, New York. His talent and skill for sculpting was evident at an early age and by the time the artist was 18, he was an apprentice in the studio of Augustus Saint-Gaudens and studying at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. Influenced by Saint-Gaudens’ Beaux-Arts ideals and practice, MacMonnies left New York for the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. While in France, he began to experiment with Renaissance inspired figural sculptures and studied under Jean Alexandre Falquiere. Lot 24, Nathan Hale, is a smaller scale reproduction of the artist’s epic statue of the executed Revolutionary hero. Created when MacMonnies was only 26, this was the first commissioned work for the young artist. The original Nathan Hale still stands in New York City’s City Hall Park, and similar reproductions exist in the collections of major institutions, such as the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
