CHICAGO’S ROOKERY BUILDING, PROPERTY FROM THE SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY EDWARDSVILLE FOUNDATION FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE UNIVERSITY MUSEUM, SIUE
The firm of Burnham and Root was commissioned to design the Rookery Building in 1885 for the Central Safety Deposit Company. Construction took place between 1886 and 1888, and at the time, the twelvestory building was the tallest office building in the world. The Rookery takes its name from a structure that previously stood on the site in Chicago’s Loop at the corner of LaSalle and Adams streets. This building, a city hall, was dubbed ‘the rookery’, referring both to the birds that would roost on the exterior ledges and dubious politicians who would congregate at the building. While several names were suggested for Burnham and Root’s new skyscraper, “The Rookery” was selected as a nod to the city’s historic past. The building was added to the National Register for Historic Places in 1970, designated as a Chicago Landmark in 1972, and listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1975. The elements being offered in this sale were removed in 1990 from the Adams Street staircase, located in the northeast corner of the building.
