MARY N. PORTER
The Community Foundation of Broward is proud to be the beneficiary of Miss Mary Porter’s compassionate legacy. As you admire her collection of jewelry that represents a lifelong passion for all things beautiful, we hope you feel proud that proceeds from her estate will help abused children, at-risk teenage girls who hope for a better future, and families who need a helping hand in order to provide a healthy and happy home for their children.
Miss Porter’s charitable legacy began January 8, 1911 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. She was born to a prominent physician who built the city’s general hospital, and is remembered for helping fellow Pottstownian Mrs. Smith turn her homemade apple pies into a national passion.
As a graduate of the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Miss Porter went on to study at L’Ecole Rey in Paris. She led a privileged life, but was never happier than when giving back. As a young girl during the Depression, she delivered clothes and food to her community. After settling in Fort Lauderdale, Florida as an adult, she distinguished herself as a remarkable philanthropist. Miss Porter’s jewelry tells a story about the many charitable affairs she supported as a friend to education, medical programs, and women and children’s causes. Most telling is that she specified that her estate benefit charity forever through her gift to the Community Foundation of Broward in Fort Lauderdale. Proceeds from this auction will go to Miss Porter’s charitable Fund here, and her bequest, empowered by your support, will care for our community in perpetuity.
Miss Porter once said, “Giving back is a part of who we are as a people. It is not only good, but necessary that those of us who have benefited from our beautiful communities extend our philanthropy to make other lives better.”
