JOAN VASS
We are pleased to be handling the collection from the Estate of Joan Vass, an American designer who began her career in the art world first as an assistant curator at the Museum of Modern Art and later as an editor of art magazines. Adhering to her motto “anything goes,” Vass strove to create clothing that embraced the diversity of modern American society while also remaining versatile, adaptable, and most importantly, pleasing to her customer. Vass’ collections are structured around timeless silhouettes that build upon her previous designs to create a cohesive body of work not restricted by season or current trend. The clothes celebrated the kind radical ease that she admired in Claire McCardell, Rudi Gernreich and Bonnie Cashin among others. Vass developed her own modern iteration of American sportswear shapes. She believed in the functionality of fashion, ensuring that all her pockets are in fact pockets, while simultaneously taking advantage of fashion’s more playful side, lining a jacket with an unexpected print. Vass would scour the globe for interesting patterns, fabrics and styles to take back to her collection and many of these inspirations can be seen within the collection. Joan Vass’ artistic background and design principles culminated in her creation of OOKS, or one-of-akind, hand-knit sweaters, which are responsible for renewing public interest in this genre of clothing. In 1981, the New York Times wrote, “Mrs. Vass has broken more ground with her sweaters and ready-to-wear than many designers more famous than she is. In fact, she is credited with being a design pioneer. She is responsible for the renewed interest in hand-knitted sweaters and she helped reintroduce cropped pants…Her clothes are filled with design idiosyncrasies that make them visible at a distance.” In 1978, Joan Vass was honored by the Smithsonian Institution as an Extraordinary Woman of Fashion and in 1979 she received the Coty Fashion Award. This session reflects Vass’ her extraordinary impact on fashion.
