382* (BABAR) DE BRUNHOFF, JEAN An original pen and watercolor production drawing with text in pen and pencil of Babar and Celeste encaged signed “Jean de Brunhoff” in the lower left. The finished illustration, for which this drawing is a preliminary sketch, appears in Le Voyage de Babar. Original watercolor and ink drawings by Jean de Brunhoff are exceedingly rare.

Two trimmed sheets (one with the illustration, the other with nine lines of text in black ink) are trimmed to a large sheet with notes in pencil discussing the nature of the forms and colors in the illustration. Two-cel set-up with overlay, gouache on trimmed celluloid placed on two overlays and applied to a key production background which was not used for the final version of the film, depicting the Dwarves, reacting to Sneezy’s outburst, frightened to come upon their intruder.

Original Walt Disney Enterprises (1937) sticker to verso of board states, “Original Work from Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs,” with the letter F in red to the lower left corner. Exhibited at The Leicester Galleries, Leicester Square, London, December 1938, with exhibition and gallery sticker to verso of frame.

Printed label to the verso of frame states “This original master background and cel painting are from Walt Disney Studios and were used in the filming of Pinocchio. Only one background is made for each scene. Consequently, this is the only one of its kind in existence.” Also included is the background artist attribution to Claude Coats and a repetition of the production sequence: Production #2003.
