Exhibited in the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York, Louis Sullivan, Function of Ornament, March 24- June 28, 1987.
The Chicago Stock Exchange was designed in 1893. Construction began in 1893 and was finished in 1894. In 1972 the building was demolished. The Chicago Art Institute opted to preserve as much as possible of the richly decorated Trading Room. It was reconstructed as part of the Museum building and opened in 1977. The entrance arch of the original building was given by the city of Chicago to the Chicago Art Institute and installed as a garden entrance.
The present column was one of many that embellished the attic floor of the Stock Exchange Building. It is reported that only two of these columns survived the demolition. $25,000-35,000
