Dr. Joseph and Eleanor Hrdina began their collection of beer steins during a tour of Europe in 1955. As avid travelers, they collected pottery steins and mugs on numerous trips throughout Europe. Dr. Joe, as he was called by many of his patients, was a physician with a private practice on Austin Boulevard in Cicero, Illinois. His wife, Eleanor, owned and operated The Linen Shop on Cermak Road during the 1930s until it was sold in 1949. Later, she served as the first President of the Hinsdale Hospital Auxiliary.

The collection of nearly one hundred steins, acquired over several decades, comprises regimental and other examples from Villeroy & Boch, Merkelbach & Wick, Simon Peter Gerz I and Diesinger. Many are inscribed with popular lyrics or humorous prose.

Dr. and Mrs. Hrdina displayed their collection in their Riverside, Illinois home. The Hrdinas retired to Vero Beach, Florida in 1969. We are pleased to offer this collection, which has been carefully packed away and stored since Dr. Hrdina’s passing in 1977.
