111 Grant Wood (American, 1891-1942) Original sketchbook containing 73 fine pencil drawings and preparatory sketches (33 finished, 40 partial page/composite), 10 pages of manuscript notes, in the hand of Grant Wood, signed on a pastedown label to upper cover (“Grant Wood”). Thin 8vo (7 ½ x 5 inches), leatherette-backed marbled boards, 48 leaves, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 1927-1929.
The drawings and notes in the sketchbook comprise Wood’s studies for the stained glass window at the Veteran’s Memorial Building in Cedar Rapids. A note from the artist’s sister, Nan Wood, on the front pastedown confirms this; it is signed and dated May 1, 1946. The window, measuring 24 x 20 feet, was at the time, the largest single stained glass window in the United States. It features a central figure of a Lady in Mourning, holding a palm branch and laurel wreath, flanked on either side by life-size soldiers from the Revolutionary War, The War of 1812, The Mexican War, The Civil War, Spanish American War and the First World War. Insignia of the army, navy and marines frame the entire scene. The window was manufactured in Munich, Germany, and installed by the Emil Frei Glass Company of St. Louis March 9, 1929.
The sketchbook shows his progression of ideas for the central figure female figure, for whom Nan Wood acted as model, the four soldiers, the , and the layout as a whole. One discarded idea shows a Madonna-like figure in the form of a pieta, holding a dead soldier and filling the entire window like an altar piece. Another shows the figure of Justice holding scales, and another Victory with her winged cap. Other drawings echo Papal tombs and Greek architecture.
$40,000-60,000
