MARY GRIGGS BURKE

The descendant of railroad, banking and manufacturing titans, Mary Griggs Burke was raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. Over one hundred years ago, her father Theodore W. Griggs purchased a summer home in Cable, Wisconsin. Property from the Griggs’ rustic and idyllic Cable lodge house, including Mrs. Burke’s childhood playhouse is featured in this auction as well as in our upcoming Fine Furniture and Decorative Arts auction taking place in Chicago on July 14, 15 and 16. After being enjoyed by the Griggs’ family for over a century, the Cable lodge home and land will graciously be donated to the United States Forest Service, Chequamegon National Forest.

Mrs. Burke graduated from both Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University. She married her husband Jackson in 1955 and together they owned homes in Manhattan and Oyster Bay, New York and Hobe Sound, Florida. Mrs. Burke spent more than half a century cultivating a definitive private collection of Japanese paintings, sculpture, artifacts, textiles and ceramics. Her treasures have been exhibited around the world, including at the Tokyo National Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
