kotecha, kantibhai chhaganlal

K

anjibhai Chhaganlal Kotecha, born Balej, Feb. 23, 1923, arrived in Jinja in 1946.

Seeing little future without college education in India which he could not afford, Kanjibhai, decided in 1944 at age of 21 to leave Bombay and follow his uncle Pragjibhai Kotecha to Africa. His first job was as a junior clerk at Madhvani Group’s Ramisi Factory in their Gazi Sisal estate. This factory was in a desolate village 20 miles from Mombasa and was infested with disease. The monthly salary was 150 Shillings (100 rupees or about $20).

He regretted leaving India on a 200-ton Dhow from Porbander in 1944, amidst the Second World War, for a 26-day voyage during which he was sick virtually every day. Back in Mombasa, he scoured the newspapers and found a job as Assistant Superintendent of the Kampala Lohana Hostel, with the same salary but with perks – full room and board plus a visa. So when he caught malaria in the jungle, he decided to quit and accept the new Hostel job. In Kampala, he impressed a community elder, Purshottam Harji Bhojani, who had himself migrated to Kampala from India in 1928. Kanjibhai married his eldest daughter Lilaben Purshottam Bhojani, a recent graduate from and a teacher at Old Kampala Secondary School on December 5, 1945. They have four sons: Mahesh, Mukund, Jayendra and Shailesh. With full room and board at the Hostel, Bapuji sent all his salary back to his parents. But he switched in 9 months to an Indian auditing company - A. Thakker & Co. - and in 6 more months to an English auditor, Fox & Company, with a monthly salary of 375 Shillings. Within 9 more months, his fifth job finally brought him to Jinja, where he was an accountant for Pitamber Motibhai & Bros., (PMB), with a monthly salary of 500 shillings, more than three times his first job, enabling him to pay for the college education of his brothers Girdharkaka and Shantikaka as civil engineers. PMB was considered a tough employer where he was expected to last three months. But he gained the trust of the owners, three brothers, who did not trust each other. He became their most senior employee and Corporate Secretary and worked there for a decade. When one of the three brothers died from cancer, the company fell on hard times. Bapuji had to explain why PMB could not make payments to a Trust set up by the deceased brother. The Trustee whom Bapuji had to convince was none other than Muljibhai Madhvani. He accepted that PMB could not pay but, being impressed then asked Bapuji if he would join the Madhvani Group. Jayantbhai and Manubhai interviewed Bapuji and offered him a job. He made the condition that he would work only in Jinja (not Kakira or elsewhere in East Africa) as Lilaben had job as a teacher at Naranbhai Road Primary School. In three months, the Group accepted his condition. So in 1956, Kanjibhai joined the Madhvani headquarters and in 1965 he was appointed the Chief Accountant of Mulco Textiles, near the airport in Jinja, where he worked until the Asian expulsion in 1972 - all without a college degree or training in accounting! Nathwani, Dwarkadas (Mamubhai) Hemraj

B

orn December 3, 1906, demise March 3,1975 (Keshod). Immigrated from Saurashtra. Arrival in Jinja 1914 forming a family enterprise “Dharmsi Hemraj”.

Today; would have been most suitable to his way of life. It would have given him the means to obtain university education so the faculties he possessed could have been animated. He developed his pleasure of reading, love of art and fervour for nationalism. He was aligned with Sri Aurobindo, Sri Ramakrishna, Mahatma Gandhi and other giants. He was a savant who loved to read and adopted the lifestyle of his icons. He adopted his eccentricity and cynicism from his idols. He abhorred materialism and adopted socialism. Lenin and Tolstoy inspired him and he read them with zeal. His identity was of a common Indian, wearing Khadi and Nehru white cap. He taught himself to live frugally, identifying himself with the poor of India. He recited The Bhagwad Gita, did his early morning Suryanamaskar, read the latest newspapers and organised groups who would collect money for India’s freedom fight. He obtained a huge donation from Sri Nanji Kalidas Mehta. Adding his own savings to it, he built the Jinja Public Library which literally became his address. People still visualise him sitting there, reading. He enjoyed writing regularly for Lohana Sandesh, Lohana Samaj, Colonial Times and Uganda Argus. A fragment of his writings survived and together with B.O. Vyas, I published it in a book form. He was a maverick in his writings. His indomitable spirit came to be respected by intellectuals and saints who visited Jinja. When it came to building a 2nd temple in Jinja he said this would start a temple building competition. He vociferously promoted building of a college in Jinja. He was a master musician and played the harmonium and violin. His friends included B.O.Vyas, Jethabhai Visana, Jamnadasbhai Sthanekia, Jagjivan Virchand Paun and Narandas Kotecha. He was close to Inder Singh Gill, Muljibhai Madhvani and Nanji Kalidas Mehta in his social thinking. He returned to Keshod and lived there as a reputed essayist. On the morning of 03.03.1975 he left the world peacefully listening to his favourite bhajan on the radio. He just fell asleep……….. His achievements: • The Jinja N.K. Public Library. • Collection of E.A. Shillings one lakh and 50 thousand (in 1944, big money) to send to India for the Freedom Fight. • Organised Indian Freedom celebrations on 15th August and 26th January in front of his beloved library. • Lead a one-man crusade, by writing articles and letters to compel the Government of India to change the venue of the immersion of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes from Kisumu to Jinja. Since then Jinja gained in importance on the international political scene. • Supported the opening of a Public Secondary School in Jinja where his friend B.O. Vyas became the Headmaster.
