As the Founder and Chairman, I am delighted to give you an introduction to Inchmarlo.
In 1986, we introduced the first continuing care retirement community for the over 55s in Scotland because we believed there was a need for a better way of living for our rapidly ageing population. The 100-acre Inchmarlo Estate, two miles west of Banchory on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire, was selected primarily because of its magnificent Georgian mansion and beautiful gardens.
Our original intention for Inchmarlo was to create the finest place in Scotland for people to spend their retirement. From what our residents and homeowners tell us, and from the number of people who have moved to Inchmarlo from all over the UK, we have succeeded.
If you have not already been, I invite you to visit so you can find out for yourself why The Sunday Times said Inchmarlo was “one of the first and still one of the best in the UK” and the Over 50s Housing Awards said Inchmarlo was “the most outstanding continuous care community in the UK.”
I hope to welcome you to Inchmarlo someday.
Charles P. Skene CBE DBA Chairman of Skene Enterprises (Aberdeen) Ltd.Inchmarlo House provides the ideal solution for those who are no longer able to live independently in their own home or require individually tailored care. Our aim is to enable people to have the best quality of life in a professional, caring and friendly environment.
We provide full-time care, respite care and day care. Our services are designed to support residents with all aspects of daily living including personal care, medication, nutrition, socialising and activities.
Our dedicated nursing and support staff can help with washing, dressing, eating and taking residents to the toilet, dining room, lounges and the garden. However, we hope that residents will continue to undertake these tasks for as long as they are able to do so. In our experience, the more residents are able to do for themselves the happier they are.
Inchmarlo House has both single and double bedrooms – all with en suite facilities and many with south facing views over Royal Deeside.
“All the housekeeping personnel at the house are fantastic. The rooms are always sparkling clean, fresh smelling, with laundry and maintenance just first class.”
Relative of Resident at Inchmarlo House
Inchmarlo provides full-time care in a homely setting. Care can be adjusted upwards or downwards to meet the resident’s needs. Friends and family are always welcome and are invited to join meals and social events.
Respite care is available in the event of an emergency situation, a transition between hospital and home or just to give carers a break with the peace of mind that their loved ones are being well looked after. Respite care can also give people an opportunity to experience living in a care home before making a decision to move into full-time care.
Day care packages are available for those who need that extra bit of help during the day and are tailored to meet their needs.
Our nursing team create personalised care and support plans for all residents, which are reviewed regularly to ensure we provide the best possible care at all times.
“All the staff are excellent – they make you feel very much at home.”
A visit to Inchmarlo will soon change your views about care homes.

People at Inchmarlo aren’t really the retiring type.
At Inchmarlo, food is our passion, so our menus include special dishes handpicked by our Founder & Chairman, Charles P Skene CBE. We recognise not only the importance of a varied and nutritious diet but also the pleasure of enjoying recipes selected from Michelinstarred chefs and restaurants around the world, such as Gordon Ramsay, Marco Pierre White and Paul Bocuse.
Our dining room is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and offers sophisticated menus with fresh, locally sourced and seasonal dishes. You can also treat yourself to morning coffee with home bakes or an afternoon tea with sandwiches, scones and jam.
The restaurant, bar or club rooms (designed in the style of a country house hotel) are ideal spots to meet family and friends.
We will always be happy to accommodate dietary requirements and special requests, no matter how unusual they may be. Eating well is an important part of feeling well.
At Inchmarlo, our food tastes home made. Not care home made.
“It’s not like a restaurant in a nursing home… this is rather like a restaurant in Union Street, Aberdeen or London…Harrods.”

Inchmarlo comprises a 100-acre estate in the beautiful surroundings of Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire.
So famous were the gardens that Queen Victoria instructed her coachman to drive through Inchmarlo to see the rhododendrons on her way to and from Balmoral, which is why one of the roads through the estate is known as “the Queen’s Drive”.
There are five unique gardens to explore, all with seating areas where you can relax and enjoy the great outdoors: the Oriental Garden, Rainbow Garden, Sensory Garden, Walled Garden and Woodland Garden, providing an abundance of wonderful flora and fauna. Residents and their visitors can enjoy many walks within this magnificent landscape, practise putting on the green or play croquet on the lawn. You can enjoy the handiwork of our green-fingered workers everywhere (they do the spadework, so you don’t have to).
Slightly off the well-manicured paths, the Inchmarlo Estate is home for red squirrels, deer and all kinds of birds. Wildlife aside, it’s a perfect natural habitat for us humans too.
For a retirement village the neighbours are pretty wild.
“An oasis of tranquillity. Shangri-La is not imaginary – it exists.”
