LETTER from THE PUBLISHER

A New Stage For Local Theaters & Communities

Over sixty cast members came to together throughout our contiguous communities to perform “Little Mermaid” at the Nazareth Academy theater. Featured on the cover is one of the lead characters, ‘Ariel’ played by Sophia Yen of Burr Ridge in a dramatic photo taken by Downers Grove stage photographer Carolina Menapace. Menapace is a Downers Grove Magazine photographer, and a native of Downers Grove. Yen is a student at St. Isaac Jogues and will be attending Hinsdale South next year.

Atseff and I; pointing to every corner of his building which echoed with the images of stage great Charlton Heston among other visiting actors. We stood in the entry way of the first-floor police station, sat it in the conference room of what was the fire house sleeping quarters, and walked up the elegant stairway to what was the second floor court room! We hope you enjoy the article on p. 23. We also welcome you to tell us about your favorite historical building, and why we should feature it.

The genesis of the theatrical production came from Kari Galassi’s vision to create YES! Productions. The acronym stands for Youth Entertainment Studios. Galassi started the production company after recognizing the need for more theater programs for kids age 5-15 years old. Galassi is also the Executive Producer of the play, and you will see the cast and crew on p. 20 along with accolades from local theater goers. Hinsdale Magazine looks forward to more creative productions from this acting troupe. We plan on covering other productions in the near future from Salt Creek Ballet, independent workshops, and High Schools in support of youth theater in the area. Bravo kids! In this premiere issue, we introduce Hinsdale History Vault. Dennis Jones, Founder & CEO of Hinsdale Bank & Trust, takes HM staff writer Larry Atseff on a stroll down First Street in downtown Hinsdale for a peek into the late 1800’s when life moved at a leisurely pace with horse-drawn carriage rides amid family-owned store fronts. Jones, a fervent supporter of the Hinsdale community, walked through each room with

The Hinsdale American Legion Post 250 Celebrates Centennial This year marks the 100th anniversary of the American Legion nationwide, and with Hinsdale Post 250 being one of the first, also marks Post 250’s 100th year. During these hundred years of service, the Hinsdale American Legion has helped local veterans from as far back as the Civil War era. Hinsdale is honoring its local Legion post with a display in front of village hall. One hundred flags have been planted in the front lawn, each representing a year in Post 250’s patriotic century of dedication and service. For decades, the post’s newsletters would give information about benefits for veterans of the various wars throughout America’s history, which would otherwise remain unknown to veterans and thereby unused. The American Legion, as a whole, played a key role in helping Congress pass the act that was responsible for the creation of the Montgomery G.I. Bill, (which would eventually evolve into the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, and now the Forever G.I. Bill,) the effects of which provided educational benefits as a reward for service members’ dedication and sacrifice to the United States.

“Bravo!” ‘Little Mermaid’ a Big YES from Local Theater-Goers BY LARRY ATSEFF

T

he full Broadway version of “The Little Mermaid” performed at Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park in September by YES Productions (Young Entertainers Studio). The inaugural show included an ensemble cast of sixty performers ages 5 to 15. The play told the story of Ariel and her dream of leaving the sea for a life on land. Over 1100 tickets were sold to four shows in LaGrange Park over the first weekend in September.

Area theater-goers watched the cast’s first production and applauded the performances. Elizabeth Haefele raved “Exceptional!” and Parita Singla (Hinsdale) exclaimed “Bravo!” Downers Grove resident, Lisa Rene, touted, “I saw both casts! Fantastic job by all! What a great first production! Looking forward to many more! Maureen Corcoran Maslauskas (Downers Grove) also sent accolades to the theater troupe. “I attended both performances and wanted to let you know just how great all the kids were! They are all so talented.” Darien resident, Joan Brandies commented, “So much talent on stage and off. Wow! Amazing production!”

Kari Galassi, Founder and Executive

Producer said “YES is meant to be a feeder program to the area high school programs by giving young actors another opportunity to gain skills and spend time on stage.” Galassi said the first show was planned for early September to fill a gap between the end of

most local theater programs and the start of the new school year. “The ultimate goal is to educate the children and give our large youth theater community more opportunities as well as to bring all parts of District 86 together on a common project.” The Hinsdale resident and mother of three added, “Most of the sports feeder programs feed into either Hinsdale Central

or Hinsdale South. Our focus was to build a program that would have participants from the entire district.” Galassi learned quickly how much work goes into a production as she assembled an experienced team of local professionals behind her, including Hinsdale South alum Grace Govostis, director of the The Little Mermaid play. The entire tech crew of lights and sound were also recent Hinsdale South graduates. Carlos Lopez and Mackenzie Lancor managed sound and Kenny Impastato ran lighting. “Our assistant director, Ellie Banke is a recent graduate from Downers Grove North. Two of the team’s interns are current Hinsdale central students. Lauren Witt focused on communications and Molly Bruns focused on photography and social media. I knew going in it was going to be a matter of putting the right team in place and we were able to recruit top talent from D86 and beyond,” Galassi reflected. With the success of the first show under their belts, Galassi said she and the rest of the management team already are exploring their next project. They are considering a Christmas show choir and another summer production. Bravo!

FIVE-POINTED STARS ON ENTRANCE SYMBOLIZE THE POLICE STATION

H

insdale Magazine recently sat down with Dennis Jones, Founder and CEO of Hinsdale Bank & Trust to take a ‘tour’ of a historical landmark which has been a home to area residents’ banking and community gatherings for over a quarter century. The address at 25 East First Street is as familiar to generations of Hinsdaleans as the Village Hall at 19 Chicago Avenue, the Community House at 415 W. Eighth Street, Amita Health Adventist Medical Center at 120 N. Oak Street and the Robert Crown Center, 15 Spinning Wheel Road. With the string of new restaurants and upscale retails storefronts along the now elegant First Street, the 25 East First Street address remains the home of Hinsdale Bank & Trust. The town’s financial beacon lays in the footprint of a historic landmark echoing village stories dating back to the late 1800’s, when Hinsdale was just established. It was the first address for both the Fire Station and Police Station. Jones recounted the diaries from the Hinsdale Historical Society when the all-volunteer, horse drawn, hook and ladder ‘Hinsdale Hose Company No. 1’ was operational as far back as 1886. Volunteers, all local businessmen, kept their fire buckets at home, and upon hearing the fire alarm, they dashed home, grabbed their buckets and rushed to the station at 25 East First Street.

VOLUNTEERS ANSWERED THIS SOUTH-FACING FIRE-BELL

“They didn’t keep horses at the fire station,” Jones pointed out. “When the alarm sounded, the first team of horses to appear at the station was hired for $5. The second team got $2, so competition was fierce,” Jones recounted. In 1935, the fire station and the police station moved into the current brick structure. You can still see the fire alarm bell on the outside of the building. In addition, the front entrance is still adorned by traditional police symbols of five pointed stars on either side of the front door. At the rear of the building, on two sets of windows, you can also see remnants of bars from police holding cells.

BARS ON WINDOWS FROM POLICE HOLDING CELLS 24

HinsdaleMag.com | HINSDALE MAGAZINE

In 1970, the Fire Station and Police Station moved to Symonds Drive, and 25 East First Street became an interesting mix of retail stores, restaurants, and even a private residence. Businesspeople John and Shirley Angelo purchased the building for $133,000 with plans to continue Shirley’s women’s clothing store in their

Transforming Village Place into the Courtyard in Classic Fashion new location. Before remodeling, they threw a memorable party showing their guests the old courtroom upstairs, the actual fireman’s pole, the police booking area, and the old jail holding cells. When they remodeled, they put big windows where the fire station doors used to stand, and those windows are still in place. As time passed, The Mole Hole gift shop, The Mousetrap Restaurant, and a travel agency were added. Eventually, the Angelos sold their Hinsdale home, and the village board approved a plan to convert the second floor to full time living quarters with a rear terrace overlooking Village Place, as it was then known. In 1993, they packed up, moved to sunny Florida, and sold the building to Hinsdale Bank & Trust. EARLY DAYS FOR THE BANK, AND MAJOR CHANGES When Jones partnered with fellow Chicago banking excutives, Ed Wehmer & Rich Murphy, one of the first things they considered was the potential to turn Village

Place, a disparate group of buildings behind the bank into a welcoming community location. Jones said, “As we started on a major renovation, we were very careful to continue the classic look of the front of the bank. Hinsdale Magazine learned from the construction records that one of the buildings was once a blacksmith shop which left behind more than a few horseshoes and empty bottles. Today, the well thought out project is a lasting legacy to villagers who now call it The Courtyard. The bank building now extends to the rear as one, beautiful, seamless, classic look, complete with a small plaza where people can sit and relax. In the center stands a statue depicting a grouping of young children suggesting a place to gather. Directly across from the statue, is a local coffee shop, Café LaFortuna, which opened nine years ago, where customers sit and sip their coffee on two park benches. Across the way, the relocated Wellness House Resale Shop, for which Jones made special accommodations, completes the classic look.

CREATIVE INTERIOR IMPROVEMENTS According to Jones, in remodeling the interior, they continued to retain classic features, while adding space for the future. He said, “We were able to create a second floor over where the closed movie theater stood, next door. We kept the theater dome, certain theater wall design features and we turned the firemen’s sleeping quarters into a board room. We even created a bridge between both buildings overlooking a cozy restaurant dining area. ”HOW 25 EAST FIRST STREET COMBINES BUSINESS WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE “The Bank” as many locals refer to it, has grown as a town lender and has started or acquired several banks in the surrounding communities. Jones has made sure each is known to be community oriented. In Hinsdale, the bank supports HCS Family Services, Habitat for Humanity, PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) for homeless, The Community House, HINSDALE MAGAZINE | HinsdaleMag.com

the Rotary Club of Hinsdale, various school districts, churches and other nonprofits. In addition, Jones has helped with traditions such as the Christmas Walk, Octoberfest, Uniquely Thursdays, and a Junior Savings Bank program for children, all of which continue to this day. “A good number of those Junior Savers from the early years of the bank are now business owners, many have loans or mortgages or savings with us, and they have Junior Savers of their own. Fortunately, our parent company, Wintrust, is a great believer in community banking. It prides itself on staying local and supporting, giving back and investing in the communities we serve.”

In sum, 25 East First Street has a very rich and varied history of community service and private businesses. Hinsdale Bank & Trust continues the legacy of both. “It’s been 26 years since we started and our goal remains the same. Vibrant legacy, BRILLIANT FUTURE

Annual Community House holiday ball shines light on programming BY MIKE ELLIS PHOTGRAPHY BY MARCELLO RODARTE

T

he holiday ball tradition at The Community House (TCH) will continue this Advent season on Dec. 7, the first Saturday in December.

Unlike most formal fundraisers, TCH has a built-in venue to host its annual holiday ball, as the interior of a facility generally marked for its casual atmosphere is transformed into a brilliant spectacle for a solitary evening. The theme of this year's ball is "vibrant legacy, brilliant future," which co-chair Luke Goodwin said denotes an attempt to tie in the 79-year history of the Hinsdale-based non-profit organization with the work it is doing "throughout the broader community." "We've had a tremendous expansion in our before and after the bell program, which is the work we do in nine elementary schools across Districts 180, 181 and the Diocese of Joliet," TCH executive director Annie Horton Krug said. "We provide before-care in those schools in the morning, and aftercare in those schools in the afternoon." Krug said while the before and after the bell program is homogeneous across the districts it serves, TCH's services in District 180 are provided at no cost to parents. Accordingly, a portion of the proceeds from the holiday ball will further the organization's ability to provide the same level of services from Hinsdale to the

Willowbrook Corner neighborhood. "What our parents in Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale and our other service areas want for their kids is no different than what the families in Willowbrook Corner want; and dollars shouldn't be a barrier to quality of care and homework supervision and supervised play and the all-important snack," Krug said. Krug said another program TCH has recently cultivated that the "vibrant legacy, brilliant future" theme highlights is "ready, set, roll, which it conducts at Hinsdale South, continuing its work with Willowbrook Corner youth by enabling them to explore prospective career paths. "With some very visionary trustees and the generosity of some folks, including Hinsdale Junior Woman's Club (HJWC), we are able to provide an extensive curriculum for them that gives an exposure to career fields," she said, adding that the HJWC funded 16 "journeys" to TCH's local business partners during the previous academic year. Fundraising through the ball will be enhanced through a raffle, which will consist of approximately 250 tickets priced at $100 apiece. Raffle prizes will include a Cartier love bracelet, which has been underwritten, a fivecourse chef’s tasting menu at Vie Restaurant in Western Springs and a walk-on role in the upcoming Community Revue next spring.

One does not need to be present at the ball in order to participate in the raffle, and thus Krug said it will afford an opportunity for individuals to "engage and support the event who either don't have $375 for a ball ticket," or who happen to be out of town that weekend. The ball itself exudes a formal atmosphere, with guests encouraged to wear black-tie attire. Ball co-chair Erin Goodwin said she and her fellow co-chairs will be working with Kristina Taheri Special Events to incorporate candlelight to create a "warm, cozy" atmosphere. Co-chair Marisa Donovan said they are attempting to develop somewhat of a "Scandinavian" feel, with mixed metals, warm woods, greenery, gold and silver. "It will have a traditional feel, because this is a very traditional event; but with a bit of sophistication and edge," Donovan said. Luke Goodwin said their primary objective is for guests to enjoy themselves, while learning more about all of the programs and services that TCH has to offer. "It's been a staple of the community; it's a fantastic amenity," he said. "Lots of people know it from the recreational and educational programming, the arts programming that happens here in this

building." Both the Goodwin and Donovan families reside in the surrounding Madison Elementary School neighborhood, and are regularly involved in TCH programming. Now a member of the board of trustees, Luke Goodwin began his involvement with the organization by competing in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament held annually in August, and continues to play basketball in TCH's fieldhouse with a group of men on Sunday nights. Donovan said her family became acquainted with the organization when they moved to Hinsdale seven years ago, and "have come to love The Community House," because of the amount of programs and activities with which they are involved.

"Our boys do sports here, and they take

art classes in the Ly Hotchkin arts studio," she said. "We love the theatre productions. ... We just feel so blessed that this is right here in the heart of our neighborhood." The Goodwins and Donovans would like to invite families with small children like theirs to the ball, and Donovan said they are already able to confirm that a number of couples will be attending for the first time this December. "I think a lot of people have this misconception that The Community House is part of the park district," Erin Goodwin said. ... "This is such an important part of our community; I can't imagine not having the gym, or not having the space for [HJWC] meetings." Co-chair Eric Donovan said he would encourage anyone that has used TCH services or participated in programs to

explore some of the organization's other offerings. "We came here initially for Jodie Harrison or flag football, but the art program has been huge for one of our kids," he said. "The amount of things that they do as a privately-run organization is exciting, and it has brought a lot to a lot of families." â–

The 2019 Community House holiday ball will be held at The Community House, 415 W. Eighth Street, in Hinsdale on Dec. 7. Tickets are available for $375, and may be purchased online at www.thecommunityhouse.org. Capacity for the evening is approximately 400 guests. Sponsorship opportunities are also available, and more information may be found online.

About

Saracco and the other certified nurse midwives (CNMs) at Elmhurst Clinic are Advanced Practice Nurses who specialize in low-risk pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care, and provide alternative comfort measures for birth, such as warm water immersion for labor and birth (water birth) and the use of nitrous oxide for pain relief (the only hospital in DuPage County offering that option). Elmhurst Clinic midwives deliver babies exclusively at Elmhurst Hospital, where they provide individualized care, blend traditional and alternative therapies, and support patient choices, cultural preferences and unique needs. In addition, Elmhurst Clinic midwives provide women’s health services such as annual exams (Pap smears, HPV screenings, infection testing/treatment), breast exams and mammography referrals, and menopausal care. Midwives see women of all ages and life stages – adolescence through menopause and beyond. “As advanced practice nurses, CNMs are trained and licensed in ways to help laboring women have a healthy birth using their own natural physiology, while avoiding unnecessary procedures that may interfere with that process,” says Saracco. MY APPROACH: Minimally Invasive Treatments to Maximize Joint Preservation Dr. Ronak Patel is a strong believer in evidence-based medicine. It has guided his board-certified training across a full range of Orthopaedic techniques that very few surgeons in the region can match. As a result, he is especially well-qualified to recommend when… and, when not, to operate, to overcome pain and maximize utility of your joints.

Dr. Patel’s Professional Background He graduated from Feinberg School of Medice, Northwestern University, and the Honors Program in Medical Education, Northwestern. He did his residency at Northwestern as well while finishing his training at the world renown Cleveland Clinic for Fellowship. Dr. Patel, who is originally from the area, brings world class care back to his hometown.

When indicated, he will perform minimally invasive surgical solutions such as cartilage restoration and meniscus transplantation. He will use techniques to promote tissue healing and joint longevity such as PRP (platelet-rich-plasma) and stem cell injections. And, of course, he recommends and monitors appropriate regimens in physical therapy, as well.

Dr. Patel has published in over 40 publications and 10 book chapters and has presented his research over 70 times nationally and internationally. He is actively involved in research and academic meetings to provide the most current care to his patients. He routinely teaches other surgeons from across the world on minimally invasive surgical techniques at labs and conferences. ■

Sports Medicine Is A Specialty Dr. Patel also earned a special certification in Sports Medicine which only few Orthopaedic Surgeons have. He treats all sports injuries with a particular interest in anatomic ACL reconstruction, cartilage restoration, and patellar stabilization of the knee. Currently, he is Head Team Physician at Hinsdale Central High School, St. Joseph’s High School, and Addison Trail High School, and Head Team Orthopaedic Surgeon for Westmont High School. STERIGENICS THE ONGOING BATTLE BY MIKE ELLIS

T

he path has been paved for Sterigenics to reopen one of its two facilities in Willowbrook, after the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) approved a construction permit the embattled company submitted on Sept. 20. According to a release the IEPA issued on the same date, the permit marks “the first step in a lengthy process, and allows [Sterigenics] to begin construction necessary to ensure the facility complies with a strict new state emissions law that requires demonstrating 100 percent capture of all ethylene oxide emissions.” The release cites the Matt Haller act, which the Illinois General Assembly passed in June, creating stricter ethylene oxide emission regulations across the state. “The Illinois EPA is committed to protecting the health and safety of Illinois communities to the strongest extent possible under state and federal laws,” IEPA director John Kim said in the release. “This construction permit is a direct result of legislation passed by the general assembly, and will allow Sterigenics to attempt to bring the facility in line with the nation’s 54

HinsdaleMag.com | HINSDALE MAGAZINE

strongest emissions-control law. This is the first step in a lengthy process, and only [by] following strict testing and monitoring requirements would the facility be permitted to operate. As we move forward, the Illinois EPA will continue to provide technical guidance to legislators as they draft further legislation to strengthen their initial law.” According to the release, prior to resuming operations, Sterigenics is required to install a permanent total enclosure to capture all ethylene oxide emissions from the facility, as well as air pollution controls to reduce emissions by 99.9 percent. Further, the release stipulates that the permit “goes beyond” the Haller act by capping the facility at 85 pounds in ethylene oxide emissions per year. Other requirements Sterigenics must satisfy before reopening may be found online on the IEPA’s Web page at www2.illinois.gov/epa. Burr Ridge mayor Gary Grasso criticized the decision on his mayoral Facebook page, stating that it demonstrates that the IEPA is “not our champion, and in fact continues to fail in its obligation to protect us.”

“We will continue the fight and explore all options, including advocating to the legislature during the October-November veto session to amend the Haller Act to abolish the use or storage of [ethylene oxide] in Illinois,” Grasso wrote in the same posting. “Sterigenics cannot reopen--ever.” State. Reps. Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, and Deanne Mazzochi, R-Elmhurst, and state Sen. John Curran, R-Woodridge, all said outside the DuPage County Courthouse last month that based on the comments the IEPA received at its public forum at Ashton Place in Willowbrook in August, the permit should be denied. “I think that everybody who was at that hearing a few weeks ago [believes] there were sufficient facts that were provided for the EPA to deny the permit, and to start the clock over again,” Durkin said. “Clearly, the public hearing put enough forward for the Illinois EPA to deny this permit going forward,” Curran said. Durkin said Sterigenics previously promised to assemble a “continuous emissions monitoring system,” which the company’s appli-

cation indicates it will not be able to fulfill. “In their application for their permit, Sterigenics admitted that they do not have the technology to be able to provide for a continuous emissions monitoring system,” he said. ... “Willowbrook’s been through enough. “They should not be a ‘test case’ or they should not be a ‘lab rat’ for this continuous monitoring system.” Mazzochi said legislators will not tolerate an IEPA “that’s going to go through a process of bureaucratic box-checking, instead of actually doing their job to be a check on Sterigenics, and make sure they’re doing it right, keeping our people safe.” “If the Illinois EPA does its job,” she said, “Sterigenics should never reopen.” The approval of the construction permit marked the second step in the company’s attempt to resume operations in Willowbrook, after the State of Illinois issued a seal order in February. DuPage County Circuit Court judge Paul Fullerton approved a consent order that lifted said seal order, pending the approval of the aforesaid permit, at the DuPage County Court-

house on Sept. 6. Back in July, Fullerton ruled to allow four municipalities, to wit, Willowbrook, Burr Ridge, Hinsdale and Darien, to intervene in the case. Andrew Acker, counsel for Willowbrook and Burr Ridge, argued that as a court of chancery, the court possesses “equitable powers” to protect public safety. Acker contended that because the Matt Haller act, which places a number of sanctions on ethylene oxide emissions in Illinois, was only approved in June, there is no case law related to it. He said the municipalities are seeking “common sense,” and that they are concerned that the outdoor storage tanks that Sterigenics employs pose a reasonable obstacle to the expectation that the company would be able to capture “100 percent” of ethylene oxide emissions. Acker further requested that the municipalities be empowered to independently test the ambient air surrounding the property, and that the Illinois General Assembly intended to establish an “ambient air standard” through the Haller act. He motioned for the case to be continued, and to forestall the approval of the consent order. Gerard Kelly, counsel for Sterigenics, countered that his client “saves lives,” and that under FDA regulations, ethylene oxide is the “only way” to legally sterilize certain medical implements. Kelly said that there will always be an argument to prevent Sterigenics from reopening its doors, and cited the inconvenience occasioned from his client being shut down for more than six months. “We cannot wait any longer,” he said. “We are entitled to the [approval] of the consent order today.” Kelly further accused Acker of running “far afield” from the Haller act by asking the court to affix an “ambient air standard” that said act does not impose--a request that he said is beyond the purview of the court. He referred to the arguments of the municipalities and activist groups opposed to the reopening of Sterigenics as “anti-scientific representations.” The counsel for the State of Illinois also replied to Acker’s arguments, expressing sympathy for the constituents of the intervening municipalities. He said while Acker’s suggestions might be useful for the legislature, they are not consistent with what is actually contained in the Haller act, to which the court is confined in ruling on this case. The counsel further said that Sterigenics will be subjected to four distinct types of testing, and that the stack height concerns contained in the municipalities’ brief have been relayed to the IEPA. He said in the event of further litigation, the seal order could be nullified, and that consequently, the consent order is vital to holding Sterigenics to the provisions of the Haller act. DuPage County state’s attorney Bob Berlin

thanked the municipalities for their “valuable input,” but said he believes the consent order is consistent with the Haller act, “and provides even further protection than that law.” In delivering his opinion, Fullerton said the court’s role is to apply the law, (in this case, the Haller act,) and not to make it. He said he appreciates the submissions of the municipalities, but that their requests are not required by said act. Fullerton further said that just because he presides over a chancery court does not mean he can do as he pleases. He also stated that Sterigenics was not violating any law when it was actually in operation, and that the state filed the suit, because the then-standards concerning ethylene oxide emissions were insufficient. Following the ruling, local elected officials gathered outside the courthouse, and addressed members of the press. Rep. Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, said he and his colleagues were “disappointed in the ruling,” although it was “not unexpected.” Durkin expressed his intention to file legislation later that day to improve upon the Haller act by investing home-rule municipalities such as Willowbrook the power to ban “unsafe” products like ethylene oxide, in “the same way municipalities are allowed to ban alcohol, tobacco and other harmful materials.” “To me, the villages’ role in regulating the health and safety of their constituents is foremost, and should never be denied,” he said. Durkin said the general assembly will be in veto session at the end of October, but he would like to rush the legislation for approval before then. He said it is “up to the democrat leadership...to make a decision on whether or not this is worthy of an expedited hearing and process in Springfield.” “No one should be concerned that these doors are opening, because this fight will continue on until we get the result that we want,” Durkin said. ... “I will do everything within my power to keep the doors closed at Sterigenics.” Sen. John Curran, R-Woodridge, also expressed frustration with the approval of the consent order. “I share the community’s grave disappointment that this consent order is going forward without any accountability for past transgressions by Sterigenics,” Curran said. “We know, based upon the readings that the Village of Willowbrook took upon themselves to do, because the EPA failed to do [them], that Sterigenics was emitting thresholds of ethylene oxide that was four times the standards put forth by the U.S. EPA in posing a danger to a community. “And we know it was coming from Sterigenics, because those canisters were shut down with the seal order; the measuring continued, and we saw those levels drop 95 percent. “There is no pursuit of justice in this consent order for the residents in and around that facility; and that is a failure.” ■
