Have your say

A

S I GO ABOUT my day in this beautiful region, I often receive comments and compliments on the Hinterland Times. The overriding message is that people enjoy reading a paper with positivity. A paper which celebrates the good out there. Yes, we mention social issues that affect our larger community, but usually this is followed by how we can actually help, or instigate change, or support a group or organisation. I love that this is what defines HT and feel proud of the team when I hear such comments. However, there is always room for improvement. Many people mention to me they would like to see a Letters to the Editor page. I agree, and this is something we plan to introduce. So, if you have something to share - an anecdote, historical fact, opinion on an issue - write to us. It is exciting to have Neil and Emily Coningham on board as HT’s new owners, and I am glad they are open to trying new ideas in these pages over the coming

months. I also need to reiterate, this paper is for the community and we always value your feedback, so let us know what you would like to read. (I’ve already had requests for a regular cartoon!) As for this month, it’s as busy as ever across and down the range. Brian Martin is a musical inspiration in Maleny, Ruth Collett has cross-stitched her art to the Royal Family, Hamish Borthwick found a woody way to give back to the hospital system, and Palmwoods has created a social hub with its community garden. Music is key this October, with everything from opera to Tom Waits to fundraising festivals – and that’s not including our regular Creative Cuts! Plus, we have awardwinning food to sample and popular markets to peruse. All-in-all, you have enough here to keep you entertained and well-fed until November, so enjoy - and then maybe write in and tell me about it.

A Honeybee Heart Has Five Openings

Ladder to the Sky

by Helen Jukes

Ladder to the Sky is a compelling psychological drama from the great John Boyne. Following Maurice Swift as protagonist- cold, manipulative and hellishly ambitious as he uses his good looks and charismatic ways to achieve acclaim and success in the literary world. He is an okay writer but lacks the creativity and imagination to come up with anything really great. He has discovered, early on in his career that stories are everywhere. He is willing to betray anyone in order to find his next story. Darkly comic, the characters in this book are brilliantly nuanced - whether you like him or not one cannot help but wonder what the despicable yet irresistible Maurice will do next in his ambition to succeed. As the title suggests – what happens when we put a ladder to the sky? Maurice has a fall awaiting him – and we’ll fly through the pages to find out exactly how it occurs.

“I might get a beehive” So begins this gentle but compelling memoir of a novice beekeeper and how through the keeping of her own backyard hive she discovers so much about herself and the world. Looking for ways to add meaning to her life after struggling to settle in to her new job and home, Helen Jukes turns to bees. Jukes respects her readers’ intelligence – this memoir is nuanced with parallels that grow so subtly that we realise, only at the end, that what we thought to be a book about beekeeping is, in fact, about so much more. Yes, we learn a lot about the practical, everyday side of beekeeping but we also learn about friendship, solitude, urban living and looking closely, very closely. This is an unexpectedly moving and delightful memoir that will stay with you long after you finish it.

COVER STORY Brian Martin shows off his conductor’s top hat. Pages 4-5 Image: Gay Liddington

Sonam and the Silence by Eddie Ayers Sonam lives in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan where music which once filled her country is now forbidden. Her world is dark and silent. One day she follows a magical, melodious sound to a walled garden and her world is silent no more. What she hears is music and it lifts her higher than the stars in the sky and deeper than the tree roots in the earth. An exquisitely lyrical tale told with simple though powerful prose, matched with evocative illustrations that help to convey the irrepressible power of music.

MAKING NEWS

Welcoming in the

new! T

HINGS ARE CHANGING at the Hinterland Times. First came our new editor, Victoria McGuin, and now we welcome new owners, Neil and Emily Coningham.

Since January 2014, Michelle and Heatley Gilmore have helped this monthly independent magazine go from strength to strength, winning awards along the way. But whilst the awards were gratefully received, HT is about community, and that is what matters most. Neil said, “We are thrilled to be taking over such a high quality, well-regarded, popular community magazine and building on the hard work and dedication that Heatley and Michelle and their team has put in. “It is very important to us that the HT legacy continues as the much-loved community magazine.“

Neil and Emily Coningham join Editor, Victoria McGuin, and Advertising Manager, Karen Muir, for a welcome lunch in Palmwoods

Emily added, “A big positive for us when purchasing the Hinterland Times was the longstanding, dedicated and talented team in place and we look forward to working together with them to continue providing the high-quality magazine that the locals love so much.” After five years of HT ownership, Michelle and Heatley are staying in publishing, but focusing on their new business, Camps Australia Wide.

“We became Australian citizens on Australia Day 2017. This will always be a special day for us,” Emily shared.

Michelle said, "Heatley and I will be back in the Hinterland - but this time checking on campsites for our guides. I will miss our fabulous team, and want to thank all the business owners and community groups who welcomed us over the years. We know HT has deserving new custodians in Neil and Emily we wish them every success."

Neil has a vast amount of knowledge operating small businesses and is experienced with web development and digital marketing. “I’m keen to increase the online presence of HT and bring digital marketing solutions for HT advertisers. I understand the pressures that business owners face,” Neil said. Emily is a physiotherapist and has always been passionate about making a difference in people’s lives, working within rehabilitation post-stroke, orthopaedic injury and chronic disease.

So, where do HT’s new owners hail from? Originally from South Africa, they travelled the world living in New Zealand, England and, for the past six years, Australia, where their two sons were born.

“I also have a love of arts, crafts and creativity instilled from an early age, with a mum who is a professional artist. Which is why this vibrant and unique hinterland community appeals to me.” The HT team are thrilled to have Neil and Emily on board and look forward to the future. In the meantime, our warm wishes and thanks to Heatley and Michelle for championing this large community and nurturing this very special monthly magazine. Long may it continue.

Brian brings music to

Maleny

Music is a language that crosses cultural divides, it heals body and mind. It is universal. It was about three years ago that people began stopping writer, Gay Liddington, in the street, urging her to write a story about Brian Martin, the relatively new-to-town creator and conductor of their choir.

by Gay Liddington

C

HOIR MEMBER Anne Buff said: “Singing with Brian provides a soft cushion to fall on. He provides a very comfortable and safe environment to sing, to falter, and to get up again.” And so it was that I met with Brian Martin at Mountain View Café. Dressed for the occasion, his top hat emblazoned with the word ‘conductor’ grabbed my attention. Born in the Riverina town of Griffith, Brian, the youngest of five grew up on a 57-acre grape farm. “My family moved to Bellingen when I was ten. Mum was always into singing and my dad played, You Are My Sunshine and not a lot more, on a number of instruments: harmonica, button accordion and organ. My next oldest brother got into music pretty early and so I kind of followed him.” Brian’s musical pursuits began on the humble family organ. “I liked it during lessons but didn’t practise. Around the end of the first year I heard a fellow playing Axel F, the theme from Beverley Hills Cop,” said Brian amid humming the tune. “The teacher told me it was a challenging piece but that’s all I wanted to learn. It took me eight months to put it together. Then music became a central focus.” When Brian reached high school, he was proficient in piano and singing. As there were no singing teachers at the school, the Grade 8 student was invited to teach higher grades. “For my final Year 12 exam I conducted an a Cappella choir. I was already addicted to conducting.”

Brian Martin’s infectious smile is in place Supplied by Brian Martin

At the age of 18, Brian attended the Brisbane Conservatorium of Music. After a year, he deferred and moved back to Bellingen where he played keyboard with a jazz crew. Afro-Cuban flavour became part of the mix. “Because I was a singer they asked me to be front, so I decided to learn more about singing. I attended Southern Cross University and completed a Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Music.” This experience found Brian Martin a teacher and mentor, leading him to create his own community choirs. “I didn’t think teaching was my career. I resisted that path for a long time because I was going to be a jazz pianist; then a composer. This singing thing was what I did on the side to earn money. My identity was very much composer, keyboard player, performer…not teacher, but that’s what kept coming.” Studies in NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) gave Brian insight into the dynamics of his musical journey leading him to own the title of Vocal Director.

“In the late ‘90s after finishing university, I taught at the Northern Rivers Conservatorium of Arts Centre in Lismore then became head of their vocal department.” Highlights in Brian’s career are many and varied but one significant experience left its mark. “By invitation, I took Ancestral Tones, a men’s group, to Numinbah prison farm. We felt anxious walking through the grounds being led to the chapel. “We started singing. There was one fellow who had been sent in to see what was going on with others hovering at the door. One by one they came in. “There was a definite shift when a warrior-looking guy with tats and dreads came in and sat down. Everyone kept directing their focus back to this guy. “He uncrossed his arms, leaned forward and began tapping. Then, they were all into it. By the end of the concert everyone was on an equal footing. The toughest looking fella and one of my crew who had retired as head of Tweed Heads police were almost arm in arm singing the same part. It dawned on me that everyone had forgotten their story.” Over time, some of the inspiration and education for Brian came from feedback circles in workshops. “People used words like peace, joy, connection and sense of community, to describe their group experience. So, the definition of music kept expanding and was more inclusive. And now, one of the high values I have in music is the community aspect. It’s a tangible experience of community.” We talked about community choirs in the context of tribe and personal growth. Brian’s mention of ‘connection to juice’ being passion, composition and inspiration, added yet another layer to our conversation.

NOW AVAILABLE Brian’s travels have taken him to the Pacific Islands, Asia and Europe. Concerts, workshops, and sing tours in Japan led to a group of Australians travelling to join with Japanese singers. An intention to live in Japan was thwarted when two and a half years of work was cancelled due to a tsunami. Since moving to Maleny for love four years ago, Brian founded New World Rhythm at Maroochydore and continues to conduct and inspire through choirs: Joy of Singing Maleny and an advanced group, Mouth Orchestra. He is also Musical Director of Sunshine Statesmen Barbershop Chorus. “Other than that, I tutor private students, work as a studio musician either on backing vocals, piano or percussion and sometimes on tour. I also conduct workshops at annual events and in the corporate sector. If I can teach a workshop in a prison then everything else is relatively easy.” An aspect of Brian’s work that is close to his heart is harmony leader training. The idea being that by teaching community choir conductors they could act as locums for each other. Brian states that it’s his own personal juice that drives him. “It’s spreading harmony with harmony. To help people recognise the harmony that is, and can be, in any moment is really useful. How can I have conflict with you if I’m connected to your heart?”

Glasshouse Mountains

stitch-up At 82 years young, Ruth Collett captures vibrant scenes of the Glasshouse Mountains in cross stitches which are printed locally to make cards and bookmarks by Angela Reedman-Polinski

This month she shares her story with writer, Angela Reedman-Polinski, on how she came to live overlooking the majestic Glasshouse Mountains and the weaving trail of her journey into art.

RTIST AND CHILDREN’S book author, Ruth Collett, was born and raised in Sydney as the eldest of seven children in the 1930s. “I moved from Sydney to Brisbane in my thirties as a married woman and we had three sons, Peter, Chris and David. “We managed service stations for income and I was happily involved in scouting as an Assistant Cub Mistress for 20 years with my children.” Ruth also had a connection with the Sunshine Coast where she taught Adult Literacy classes at the Caloundra Library. In the 1980s, she chose to focus on writing her children’s book, Cathie’s Special Tree, a short chapter book for 5-8 year olds. “I re-drafted and edited the manuscript with assistance from Gondor Writer's Group, in late 2017 and published the book in 2018.” In 1993, Ruth moved to the Glasshouse area after looking at houses for over six months without finding the right one. Then, she came across a four-acre property overlooking Mt. Tibrogargan, Mt. Coonowrin and Mt. Beerwah. “I stood at the sink and looked out of the window and declared ‘this is the one’.” Ruth moved in not knowing that the property had a thriving little secret. Established at the back of the property were many rows of fruit-bearing custard apple trees. By a chance encounter with the right person, Ruth was able to have her fruit assessed and sign the papers to have her custard apples valued as export fruit. “Our custard apples were sent to Harrods in London and various food outlets in Japan, Singapore and Canada.”

The four acres of fruit proved to provide plenty and the venture was a success. “One Christmas, I made a particularly good batch of custard apple liqueur which was well loved by all the friends and family members that received it.” In time, there were less hands available to help out with picking, processing and packing and not enough space to expand the number of trees required. Ruth made the difficult choice to have them bulldozed rather than watch the fruit rot. “It was really hard to see that, I don’t like seeing trees removed even when they are danger but you do what you have to do.” It is her art that has always brought her to a place of calmness and steady mindfulness, as she loses herself in to it ever since being a little child. “I started out really enjoying painting at school and I have a funny memory of asking my mother for thick paint so I could put texture onto the picture of the dog painting I was working on. “She said no unfortunately and so I used toothpaste on a toothbrush as a texturiser for the dogs fur and I won first prize!”

Ruth went on to enrol in Granville Tech for art classes. However, she accidentally stood in the wrong queue line and ended up in dressmaking classes. “I stuck with the dressmaking classes as it was too much fuss to change it all and then over many years I also learned crocheting, knitting and beading skills.” These skills kept her hands busy and created many gifts for family and friends and also a couple of members of British royalty. The Queen Mother and the Queen have received birthday gifts of cross-stitching from Ruth and she has received official letters of thanks from them. “I have sent the Queen Mother a cross-stitched lavender pillow and in 2016 I sent the Queen a framed cross-stitched letter E for her 90th birthday.” “It was so lovely to receive those letters and interesting to read the backstory and details of the ladies-in-waiting who organise and send them.” Ruth further developed her cross-stitch skills through an intricate process of photographing and grid mapping. “I take a photograph of the image I would like to recreate and then grid map it to create a pattern. I then identify the colours of each grid block so I have a complete pattern to work with. “This is how I created my Glasshouse Mountains pieces and then add my own colour schemes based on sky colourings in different stages of sunset, night time and storms.”

Ruth Collett at five years old Ruth at home this week, still with a twinkle in her eyes

It is these cross-stitch artworks that Ruth has had turned into gift cards and bookmarks for sale at the local visitor centre. Visitors can take home a vision of the mountains displayed in a beautiful piece of artwork with vibrant seasonal backdrops. Ruth and her cross-stitch artwork are also being included in a piece in the second edition of the book ‘The National Heritage Listed Glasshouse Mountains’ by Ivon Northage and Celebrate Glasshouse Country Inc. “I created a gold commemorative version of the mountain scene to celebrate the national heritage listing of the Glasshouse Mountains and that is being shared in the second edition of the book.” I ask Ruth about her next crossstitch project and she answers with a broad grin. “I want to send a cross-stitch gift to William and Kate. Next I will probably send one to Harry and Meaghan, I like the way her and the Queen seem to have a good laugh together, it’s good to see.”

Planting Positivity in Palmwoods Officially known as Soil & Soul, there is a thriving community garden located near the centre of Palmwoods on the corner of Hill and Churchill Streets. Erik Eilertsen went to meet the visionaries behind this project.

K

AY NIXON, with the enthusiastic support of her husband Tony, is the modest vision and drive behind the Palmwoods Community Garden. However, they are the first to insist they have had some great support and advice from local gardening experts and a team of helpers willing to learn and lend a hand. “The land on which the garden is situated was left to the Palmwoods Uniting Church for the benefit of the community,” explained Kay. “It is leased to Soil & Soul today at no cost, through the Palmwoods Community and Business Association.” I asked how the name, Soil & Soul, came about. “It is meant to be a safe place for mind, body and spirit so it seemed appropriate,” said Kay. “Being close to nature and others who care brings solace, peace and hope encouraging us to delight in the simple pleasures of life - observing

nature; sharing; eating and getting our hands dirty. “We need to be responsible custodians of creation, appreciating all we have while being sensitive to those who have suffered or feel broken. As a community pastor this is a central part of my role and I believe many members of this community feel the same, even if they might express it in different ways.” Asked what prompted her to start the garden Kay replied, “I recognised a need in the community for people to be connected. Even though it is a lovely town many people do, for various reasons, feel isolated. “I see the garden as providing a non-threatening, positive environment where relationships can be established. “Also,” she continued, “there has recently been a swing towards sustainability as people come to realise the need to conserve the environment and live more healthily.” In the spirit of community, Soil & Soul in turn make the food produced by the gardens available to everyone, with a few simple requirements for those who make use of its produce.

“We ask people not to uproot but to pick as much as they need,” said Kay. “Plus the occasional donation of a bag of compost, soil or some similar commitment towards the operating costs helps the project.” The first public meeting to establish the Palmwoods Community Garden was held in February 2016 and attended by more than 50 people. Kay then arranged to have the water connected and some landscaping of the site to be carried out. Some raised beds were put in place and the first plantings commenced. “At the official launch an olive tree was planted in the centre of the garden,” Kay added. “Seen from above, this focal point appears to be the middle of a flower with the raised beds arranged around it like petals.” Nearly two years later there are 10 raised beds at the top of the garden. Half of the part that slopes down from there has been terraced for crops while the other part is arranged, using old railway sleepers donated by Queensland Rail, in large steps that can be used as seating for functions. “Further down the slope is the Pasifika Garden,” continued Kay, “where there are fruit trees and other plants associated with cultures that originate in both the Pacific region and with the indigenous peoples.” Soil & Soul hold garden-themed workshops from time to time and guest speakers have included Anne Gibson, The Microgardener, and Robyn Cook, who has vast experience of kitchen gardens in schools. “There are also many advisers, quite a few of whom are local, who bring their experience and know-how to the garden,” Kay said. The garden has also hosted themed lunches, some largely funded by the state government in order to promote multicultural relations in the community. “All cultures and ages comprise the members of the garden community and include Indigenous, Fijian and Tongan people, and enthusiasts ranging in age from two to 85!” Kay continued, “We have a number of community groups connected with us and sharing seeds and planting, such as the Scouts, Guides, the Kindy, Palmwoods State School, and the local churches. “The Girl Guides and the Joeys from Scouts have learned from people involved in the garden about planting seedlings and propagation.” She paused, “Research has shown that children who are exposed to growing their own food are more likely to develop good eating habits. Being involved in these sorts of projects in the community gives them a sense of belonging.” A local food business, Gourmet Garden, recently held a working bee at the garden and generously donated the new Soil & Soul sign. “The garden always appreciates donations from local businesses and a grant received from the Sunshine Coast Council was most welcome,” Kay shared. “And we particularly enjoyed a personal donation from our local council member, Marty Hunt.” While Soil & Soul, or Palmwoods Community Garden, has the stated aim of producing traditional and organically grown food crops to benefit the community, they believe that those who are actively involved benefit from it being a meeting place.

Hip hip hooray for

Hamish

There are some people who, once introduced, cannot be forgotten. Flaxton resident Hamish Borthwick is one such person. With a blend of eloquence, honesty, grit and tenderness, Hamish shared his recent adventures involving the ‘Woodies’, hips and happy outcomes with HT’s Victoria McGuin.

by Victoria McGuin

I

FIRST MET HAMISH Borthwick in 2016 when I went to visit the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild affectionately known as the ‘Woodies’. A long-time resident of our Hinterland, Hamish originally owned a gerbera farm in Palmwoods before moving up to Flaxton where the front of his property is adorned with homegrown fruit, flowers and vegetables for sale. However, it seems carpentry is his true calling. Hamish showed me around the workshops in Montville where men and women hone their carpentry skills making

everything from tables to children’s toys to pepper mills. I was particularly impressed with the generous nature of those involved who often make beautiful and functional objects for community groups and charities. A particular group, ‘The ToyBoys’, craft over 1000 planes, pull-along animals and various toys each year which they donate to the Salvation Army. A few weeks ago, Hamish was back in touch. A new project involving occupational therapy, Selangor Hospital and Hamish’s hip had come to fruition. It was time to share the story so off to Selangor I went. After a warm welcome from this charismatic man and introductions to other Woodies and Selangor staff, I was shown an impressive display covered with jigsaws, puzzles, hand ladders, nuts and bolts and various other curious works in native wood, such as wattle, fiddlewood and quandong. “We made these for the Occupational Therapy unit,” explains Hamish. “They are mainly for stroke victims who are learning basic cognitive functions again.” I am shown a large vertical slab of wood with locks, light switches and taps attached, called ‘fiddle block’. “There are simple tasks that we take for granted but people recovering from strokes need to practice them. Such as turning on a switch or using a chain lock; so, I made this,” Hamish says. The reason this important project came about was due to Hamish himself. “I was in here for five months from

December to April with a bung hip that went septic. It was a long haul to recovery but I am so grateful to the staff at Selangor for helping me.” Two other members of the Woodies had also spent time in hospital so the three of them decided to repay the hospital system for all they had done. “The joy of doing this for them was immense for us,” Hamish states, with eyes watering. “I also want to thank the Club for allowing me to do it, and the Council for giving us $1500 for materials.” Hamish stands with a long, bent stick as support and acknowledges it with a smile. “This is ‘Mr Woody’,” he says. “I had it for my first hip. I went in to Kawana in an ambulance and Dawn Porter was the paramedic – she was delightful, with a love of all things wooden. “Dawn runs a farm in Tanawha which is a hub for displaced animals, and children with challenges are often visiting. She told me she would love a wooden tractor for the kids. “When we arrived at the hospital, she walked in declaring ‘Look what I’ve got, a real hard woody!’ which made everyone look around in surprise; and there was

“While I was doing my occupational therapy in the gym, I noticed a lot of patients sit and watch so I came up with a ‘thank you’ sign to hopefully help them.” I take a closer look. THANK YOU. You are the only one that can help me. I am the only one that can help you. Thank you for listening to me. You did not come here to sit and watch, but to do your exercises. We love dearly what we do, and you create the enjoyment we need by getting better. Please take heed of what we say by putting it into practice.’ An Observation by an Impatient Patient. Hamish Borthwick went through period of pain, struggle and rehabilitation and, true to his formidable character, re-emerged with a smile, gratitude, generosity and a big dose of humour.

I with my stick. He’s been called Mr Woody since then,” Hamish laughs. Hamish asked Dawn to send him an email with her request. He also contacted Wishlist in Kawana to ask if there was anything the Woodies could do for them. “They said ‘yes, kids’ tables and toys would be great’. We made them 10-12 tables with four chairs each and some wooden building blocks. “And the joy of it all is that Dawn will have her tractor by Christmas. It’s a club project now. Two metres long by one metre wide and a metre high, so the kids can climb all over it and have fun.” I speak with Sandy Moore the CEO of Selangor and she adds, “When I met Hamish in here, we would chat about his ideas. He was always enquiring what he could do. He has a ‘can do’ attitude and his presence and character are very heartening. “The Occupational Therapy unit here was a small part of the ward and we have been able to create some good spaces now. We can help recondition people to be the best they can, to re-join the community,” Sandy smiles, “We might even ask the Woodies for some outdoor garden beds on wheels next…”

Hamish Borthwick with Mr Woody

Hamish is keen to point out that this was a team effort as he shows me the work on display. “Max is a wizard on a scroll saw. He did the ‘Occupational Therapy’ letters and the animals. Ray did the word puzzles, Philippa painted some of the puzzles and I did some of the larger puzzles.” There are brain teasers, “to get the brain moving” and at the front sits a sign with a message.

Community welcomes the

Himaleny Connection

ARE GOODS OF AN ’ACCEPTABLE QUALITY’?

Himaleny Connection - Rabindra, Shreya, Sunita, Saroj, Himal and Cham from Volunteer Nepal

As we are close to Christmas, I thought it useful to raise the issue of the quality of the goods that you will purchase for your family and friends - and what happens when the goods you have just purchased or received do not meet your expectations. The Competition and Consumer Act (2010) (Cth) (the Act), and incorporating in its Schedule 2 the Australian Consumer Law, provides uniform legislative protections for all Australians, based on the premise that goods must be of an ‘acceptable quality’. Prior to the Act’s introduction, rather than considering whether goods were of ‘acceptable quality’ you would consider the good’s ‘merchantable quality’. This generally meant that goods bought only had to be ‘reasonable’ in description and price rather than ‘acceptable’ in description and price. In other words, the new requirement of ‘acceptable quality’ demands a great level of quality than merely that of ‘merchantable quality’. How then does one establish whether goods are of an ‘acceptable quality’? The Supplier guarantees that the goods must be: • fit for the purposes for which goods of that kind are commonly supplied • acceptable in appearance and finish • free from defects • safe and durable. Therefore, goods that are of ‘merchantable quality’ might not be ’acceptable’ to a consumer if, for instance, there is minor blemish in the appearance. Note, however, that, if the blemish was brought to your attention at the time of purchase it may be regarded as a product of “acceptable quality” as you were made aware of the defect, and elected to continue with the transaction. A supplier may have breached this guarantee of ‘acceptable quality’ if: • the product would not be acquired by a reasonable consumer fully acquainted with the nature and extent of the failure; or • the product did not match a description or a demonstration model; or • the product did not meet the standard that is expected of goods of that nature, or • the supplier did not disclose that the goods are unfit, or • the goods are unsafe. Depending on the type of guarantee and nature of the breach, there are numerous remedies that a consumer may seek, although most consumers will seek a refund or the replacement of the goods. Suppliers are required to remedy any defects in a reasonable time, and if they fail to do so, legal action can be initiated.

T

HE TEAM AT the Hinterland Times always like to hear from people involved in altruistic and humanitarian endeavours and a group from Maleny and the surrounding area have recently returned from a very special experience – volunteering in Nepal. “It took over two years from the time that I started to put the idea together until we actually boarded the plane,” said organiser Robyn Jones, who also teaches drama at Maleny State High School. The international excursion was made up of students, their parents and teachers, 24 in all, and travelled to Kathmandu, staying with Volunteer Nepal, the subsidiary organisation of Nepal Orphan’s Home. Over 10 days they went to placements with various baby orphanages, primary schools for poor children and homes for the elderly, helping in whichever way they could. On returning to Australia, a committee which included some students, parents and staff from the excursion was formed. The initiative is independent from the school itself and is called The Himalaney Connection to reflect the blending of the two communities. “I was stunned by how the students took it all in their stride,” Robyn admitted. “They didn’t see obstacles, just possibilities.”

Tove is Easton Lawyers’ full time principal lawyer and also the Hinterland’s longest serving principal lawyer serving since January 2004. She specializes in all commercial law matters as well as wills and estates, leases, partnership and company matters. She has always had a policy of providing the first consultation free of charge. That gives clients peace of mind that they are not up for legal fees before they have even had advice on their questions.

Student Isabella Gray added, “The hostel where we stayed, Volunteer House, was our security

blanket, but then everyone we met was so embracing. I made a second family there.” Robyn read about Nepal Orphans Home (NOH), otherwise known as Papa’s House, which was founded in 2004 by Michael Hess (Papa), a carpenter from Florida. In 2005 NOH started Volunteer Nepal, a program to connect volunteers with poor villages across Nepal in great need. It was through these two organisations that Robyn and her group became involved. “The Himaleny Connection has been raising funds to bring six Volunteer House staff here in late September to early October, including four of the original Papa’s House children, who are now young adults,” said Robyn. “Our hinterland community has an amazing level of social consciousness, energy and compassion,” Robyn added. “We want to extend that with our Nepalese visitors who will be staying with host families when they come to Maleny.” There will be a fundraising gala on October 9, 7pm at Maleny High, Waroo building, 50 Bunya Street. “We would love the wider community to get behind this and help us raise funds while meeting some beautiful people and learning more about their culture.”

The

Principal Questions Our Hinterland schools are pretty special, and we have been running a monthly article finding out more about the person at the helm. This month it’s Principal Louise Cameron, from the Blackall Range Independent School. 1.

How are your family with the move to this area?

I have made the Sunshine Coast my home for the last 25 years. It was the perfect place to raise my four children. The weekends could be spent enjoying the beach in the morning followed by afternoon rainforest walks in the hinterland.

2.

What do you do on your days off?

Walks on the beach, swims, coffee with family and friends, movies and theatre, weekends away, and browsing markets for local produce. I am also enjoying researching my family’s history and piecing together their life stories.

3.

Is this your first Principal role?

Yes. I have been associated with Blackall Range Independent School since 2001. I began at the school as the Yr 3-5 classroom teacher then moved into the Special Needs Co-Ordinator role. From 2010 I worked for EQ attached to Special Education Departments before returning to Blackall in 2013 to take on a role in Leadership.

4.

Why did you choose to become an educator?

Teaching is such a dynamic, creative and rewarding profession. The excitement and curiosity for learning that students bring each day to the classroom is infectious and I love working beside them as they gain new understandings.

5.

7.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I love working with students to help them recognise what their strengths are, whilst supporting them with any challenges they may experience. When students recognise they are capable it is very rewarding.

8.

What has been the most valuable lesson you have learnt along the way?

Developing positive relationships with your students and their families has the greatest impact on their learning.

What are the strengths of the school community?

The school community is very welcoming and inclusive. Diversity is encouraged and celebrated.

6.

Principal, Louise Cameron, with two Prep students and the schools much-loved pet guinea pigs!

What are your plans for the next year for the school?

To strengthen the programs we have initiated in the school that encourage our students to make a difference. “Be The Change” enables students to take action around environmental issues such as the overuse of plastics in society or to address social issues such as homelessness and spending time with the elderly.

9.

Did a teacher or principal inspire you when you were a student?

I have been inspired by my teachers who were passionate about their teaching and their lessons were engaging and interactive. You always knew the teachers that really cared about you and that encouraged you to be your best.

10. What is your motto or favourite quote? Fair isn’t everybody getting the same thing ... Fair is everybody getting what they need in order to be successful.

PICERS TAMARIND is a sensory pleasure. From the moment you drive in, your eyes rest upon landscaped tranquillity with deep green leaves, the soothing sounds of water and songs of native birds also enjoying this haven. I have come to meet with Ryan Dillon, Tamarind’s General Manager and find out the retreat’s progress since my last HT visit. The menu has changed with the season and I am impressed by the originality and exciting combinations of spices, vegetables, meat and seafood. “Head Chef, Daniel Jarrett, has taken Asian food and put a different spin on it,” Ryan explained. “His dishes are

Restaurant Sunshine Coast with the national event taking place at the end of October. “Dan is not a big self-promoter,” smiled Ryan, “but he was thrilled his food was recognised. It is a good reward for the whole Tamarind team who work so seamlessly, and for the region.” For those who wish to create Dan’s dishes, there is a cooking school, run by the engaging Sharon Cook. “We have custom-made cooking pods and every Saturday, 12 people can create a three-course meal using unique techniques and ingredients and then enjoy it at the end with a glass of wine. Everyone leaves with a new skill.” Spicers Tamarind is also just a great place to relax. Sculpture on the Edge is more popular every year and Jazz in the Forest, every first and third Sunday from 12-3pm, is a good time to throw your picnic blanket down and have a leisurely drink while enjoying the music. Add to all this the fact that Spicers Group have a Green Team constantly reducing waste with Earthcheck benchmarks, and it is no wonder the atmosphere here feels so connected to the beautiful nature around us. Do your wellbeing a favour and pay a visit to this special spot.

Super sausage rolls!

B

RYAN KELLY from Mayfield Patisserie and Chocolates in Montville has backed up his performance this year by winning the title of Best Gourmet Sausage Roll in Australia. Bryan has won state awards in previous years and has finally reached his goal of winning the national award. Many hours of experimentation go into creating these sausage rolls with much effort being placed on flavour, texture, moisture and appearance. The best selection of products was shipped to Melbourne on overnight freight and baked again the

previous day for judging. The result? Winning four gold state level awards for Beef, Chicken and Mushroom, Turkey and Cranberry and Lamb and Feta. It was the Lamb and Feta Sausage roll that won the overall national title. When Bryan creates, he mulls on the flavours, the taste combinations and then experiments – and it has paid off. Bryan said of the win, “At first I felt emotional as it was a huge achievement to compete against the quality of the trades people in the industry, and to have that title under my cap is rewarding for the 35 years in the trade.”

HINTERLAND TIMES – OCTOBER 2018

A possible path for Maleny Credit Union M

ALENY CREDIT UNION has received an offer from Firstmac, benefitting the entire Maleny community.

MCU has been down a number paths over recent years, all with the intention of remaining open and of service to the local community. As a Board, they have been searching for a model and business that understood the history of MCU and the loyalty of their members. It is important to MCU to maintain a community focus while at the same time offering better products to their members and community. Maleny Credit Union's CEO, Bob Malcolm shared, "MCU received an offer from Brisbane-based Firstmac, Australia’s largest non-bank lender, which will not only benefit MCU members, but the entire Maleny community, particularly through the MCU Charitable Trust - $2 million will be paid into the trust, plus at least $30,000 annually. “The acquisition, if it is approved by members, will allow members to realise the value built up in the MCU, with Firstmac paying $7 million for the business. “Around $4 million will be distributed to MCU members, resulting in approximately $1,200 for each

member, once the transaction is completed. About $1 million will be used to pay back capital to MCU member investment share owners.” Firstmac have guaranteed the continuity of a highstreet banking presence in Maleny and will continue to employ current staff while at the same time expanding the banking and financial services offering. This proposition is considered the best option for MCU and they hope that when the time comes to vote, members will recognise this and support it.

All the fun of the fair!

UNSHINE COAST Arts and Crafts are a locally run craft group and shop that has been on the Main Street of Montville for over 30 years. On October 27 and 28 from 9am – 4pm, they will be having a Community Craft Fair in the Montville Village Hall, Main Street, Montville. It will feature 100% locally handmade goods such as fabric art, handbags, pottery, jewellery, jams and spreads, knitted goods, woodwork and so much more from craft group members and other members of the community. Delicious refreshments such as tea, coffee, drinks, handmade cakes and slices, sandwiches and plenty more will be available at the member-run café. Sunshine Coast Arts and Crafts are proudly supported by the Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program. Their aim is to support local artisans and give them a place to showcase their beautiful work. Most importantly, entry is free. With Christmas fast approaching, this is the perfect time to come and browse for that extra special and unique handmade gift. See you there!

PRING IS here and it’s time to celebrate! Come and join in the fun at this year’s Maleny State School Country Fair on Friday, 12th October, from 3.30-8pm. Organised by a group of dedicated P&C volunteers with huge support from parents, staff, students and the community, this event is the schools’ main fundraiser for the year. You will find a variety of fun stalls, delicious food, awesome rides, show bags, exciting activities and fantastic, live entertainment including performances by Chris Staff (international singer/songwriter), The Dennis Sister (Sunshine Coast artist), Col and Nellie Finley Band (our very own), martial arts display and dance performances by Heartspace. The Mega Raffle will be a highlight with many brilliant and generous prizes donated by local businesses and individuals, totalling a value of over $3000. Be sure not to miss the fireworks spectacular at 7.30pm, proudly sponsored by Remax Hinterland. This is always a memorable day, full of fun and great entertainment. All welcome, so we hope to see you there!

HE HINTERLAND is recognised nationally as a ‘hotspot’ for its exceptional diversity of wildlife, and Hinterland Bush Links aims to protect the plants and animals of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Hinterland Bush Links is bringing highly acclaimed conservation leader, Keith Bradby (pictured), to Maleny on October 12. Keith pioneered a visionary project to create Gondwana Link, a 1000km wildlife corridor from south-west Western Australia to the edge of the Nullarbor Plain. This is akin to the Great Eastern Ranges corridor from Cape York to Victoria, of which Hinterland Bush Links is a part. Keith supports this landscape connectivity work nationally, which is focussed on the future for our native plants and animals. Keith is an inspirational and entertaining speaker and this will be a great opportunity to engage with him about conservation strategies to protect wildlife in the Sunshine Coast region. This event is at 7pm, Friday, October 12 at the Maleny Community Centre. Cost is $15/$12 concession, which includes supper. Doors open 6.30pm. Please register with Hinterland Bush Links 0448 447 322.

Two treats for music lovers at

Maleny Community Centre Mikelangelo sings Cave-Waits-Cohen Maleny Arts Council’s final concert of the year will feature the magnetic and charismatic Mikelangelo in his show Cave-Waits-Cohen, with a range of songs from these three totally diverse yet influential artists. It will be performed in the Maleny Community Centre at 2pm, Sunday, October 21. “He is able to evoke the characteristics of these very different greats of the music world from the iconic folk songs of Leonard Cohen, through the blues/rock of Tom Waits to the dark lyrics of Australia’s Nick Cave; and what’s more, his own voice is well worth listening to,” said artistic director Chris Ross-Smith. The repertoire for Maleny includes Cave’s Into my arms, Cohen’s Hallelujah and Waits’ Goin’ out West; and later in the show some of Mikelangelo’s original songs, demonstrating he can more than hold his own as a songwriter, even in this exalted company. The British Theatre Guide was impressed with his talents as an instrumental performer who provides his own accompaniment:

Above: Mikelangelo brings vocal magic to MCC Right: Rehearsals are underway for the upcoming Marriage of Figaro

Hinterland Events January: Australia Day celebrations; Maleny Film Festival; Yandina Ginger Flower and Food Festival February: Montville: Flame Hill Grape Stomp

‘An engaging performer, multiple instruments showed off the singer’s many-fingered talents from guitar to accordion and clarinet and he proved himself a masterfully powerful and eerie whistler as well.’ Bookings are through the website www.malenyartscouncil.com , the Maleny Information Centre and for groups of 10 concession from John Marsden at 5494 2584. Prices are $30, $25 for members and concessions and $15 for students.

Mozart and marriage in Maleny The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, is a very funny involved plot, encompassing love and liaisons, tricks and disguises, lust and laughter. The forthcoming production by The Maleny Singers will hold you in thrall. The main four characters are Figaro – personal valet to the Count – played by Tony Glazebrook; Susanna – his bride to be and personal maid to the Countess – played by Evalee Sharples; Count Almaviva – a very wealthy and bored Lord of the Manor – played by Colin Dunn, and Countess Rosina – his faithful but unhappy wife – played by Sarah-Jane Abbott. Colin, Evalee and Tony have played major roles for many years in this talented group. In his youth, Colin was a chorister and soloist, and he continues to show his musicianship and lovely tenor voice. Evalee has had years of experience in Brisbane musical companies, and continues to grow as a performer. Tony is relatively new to opera but the phrase 'duck to water' springs to mind, and Sarah-Jane is making her debut in a major role as the Countess. All this, plus an orchestra of 22 under the baton of Margaret Taylor, who also directs the opera. A wonderful chance to have fun and support through Rotary, two great charities – LifeFlight Foundation and Blackall Range Care. Performances at the Maleny Community Centre on November 9, 10 and 11, at 7pm, 4pm and 2pm respectively. Tickets at the Maleny Information Centre, or trybooking.com, or at the door.

UTSPOKEN IS BACK, bringing two events for October. First up is Kristina Olsson, best-selling author of the memoir Boy, Lost, talking about her new novel, Shell, a big, bold and hauntingly beautiful story that captures a defining moment in Australia's history.

It is Sydney, 1965, and Danish architect Jørn Utzon’s striking vision for the Sydney Opera House has begun to transform the skyline, unleashing a storm of controversy, as, all the while, the shadow of the Vietnam War and a deadly lottery threaten to tear the country apart. Viewed through the eyes of two unforgettable characters caught in the eye of the storm, Shell captures a world on the brink of seismic change. The second event is with Gillian Triggs, former President of the Human Rights Commission who withstood relentless political and media pressure for five tumultuous years, defending the defenceless. In her memoir, Speaking Up, Triggs shares with readers the values that have guided her convictions and the causes she has championed. She dares women to be a little vulgar and men to move beyond their comfort zones to achieve equity for all. Her book is an irresistible call to everyone who yearns for a fairer world.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Jacky Lowry-artist and printmaker

P

RINTING IS JACKY’S PASSION, and collagraphs, linocut prints and photopolymer etchings are her favourite printmaking techniques. Nature, especially the world of plants, is Jacky’s main inspiration and she often uses real plants to make collagraph printing plates. Jacky says a strong influence on her work is a “somewhat feral childhood lived along the banks of the Canning River, Western Australia”. Her love of nature began there along with a love of the colours, forms, patterns and designs of plants. Later came an interest in science and biology as well as botanical illustrations. Elements of all these can be seen in Jacky’s artwork especially in the collagraphs made with real plants. A second body of work explores a delight in pattern, contrast

and abstraction, through the fragmentation and collaging of print editions. The source images are mostly botanical forms. To make these collages, the prints in an edition are cut into pieces and then the same piece from each print is collaged to create a new patterned image. Each collage made using this technique is unique yet they clearly belong in series, relating to each other through the link of the source image. Jacky explains, “They express my passion for the forms and patterns of natural systems

SMALL GROUP ART WORKSHOPS Try your hand at something creative... Join local Maleny artist Kim Herringe in small group art workshops and explore the endless creative possibilities you can acheive with Printmaking. which may be fractal and wild or ordered like crystal lattices. Despite this fragmentation and rearrangement, the patterns retain a resonance with the original forms and emotions of the source images. They can still be ‘read’.” After a life of much moving around, Jacky now lives in Conondale on the banks of the upper Mary River and runs workshops in printmaking, paper making and textiles from her studio. Currently open by appointment, email: jacky.lowry@internode.on.net or phone 5435 0085.

Iconic actress Glenn Close is elegant and impressive as Joan Castleman, the long-enduring, ever-compromising and supportive wife of egotistical writer Joe Castleman (Jonathan Pryce), who is about to accept a Nobel Prize for Literature. Then a sycophantic minor journalist begins scratching away at the truth behind the unlikeable, arrogant (and dallying) literary doyen. It makes a dark contrast to the accolades he receives from the fawning literati. Saturday, October 20, dinner and drinks 6-7pm, film screening from 7.15pm. At the Maleny monthly night markets you can enjoy the music of different artists. This month on October 13 from 69pm, Mufassa will be performing, blending the realms of roots, ska and coastal reggae, crafting tasty and upbeat dance floor rhythms driven by thick bottom end bass lines and finished with smooth 3-part vocal harmonies. Described as having a calm and infectious nature, Mufassa (aka Dale Mallett), uses his energy to create music that acknowledges personal sacrifice, social injustice and a longing for peace, respect and equality. Mufassa is fearless in the pursuit of what sets his soul on fire. Come and savour his sounds.

Three Billboards Seven months have passed since the murder of Mildred Hayes' daughter and still no arrest has been made. Frustrated and angered by what she regards as an inefficient local police force, the hard-nosed mother puts up three roadside signs to goad them into action. In so doing, Mildred provokes the wrath of both the police and the townsfolk. Frances McDormand was nominated for Best Actress in 2017 playing Mildred. This thought-provoking film plays at the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, October 6. Dinner and drinks 6-7pm, film screening from 7.15pm. Tickets for members at Maleny Information Centre, $8, or www.malenyfilmsociety.info. Non-members tickets at the door from 6pm. 28

Eudlo Music Nights Music lovers lament the lack of opportunity to attend music events that cross stylistic boundaries and are family friendly but allow people to let their hair down a bit – dance and party, and camp the night rather than worry about a late night drive home. The Eudlo Music Nights on October 6 and 7 at Wominjeka Park, Eudlo, aims to provide just that. The event goes from 12pm Saturday to 2pm Sunday, with fun activities and two music stages. We have kept the entrance low at $25/15/10 including camping/caravanning, to encourage attendance. Hope to see you there! www.eudlomusicnights.com.au

S WELL AS Brush Turkey celebrating our 20th birthday this year, its also the 20th anniversary of the Land for Wildlife (LFW) program in SE QLD. We were invited to attend and present at LFW events for Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast Regional councils and its very inspiring to see all the landholders putting their time and resources into creating a brighter future for our ecosystems and wildlife. The hills and valleys of the Blackall Range have been fertile ground (pardon the pun) for the development of a culture that appreciates the diversity and richness of our local ecosystems. Many local people now make a living in the bush regeneration and revegetation industry and work far afield using skills developed and honed on the Blackall Range. For example, Brush Turkey Enterprises has grown from a team of two dreamers 20 years ago to operating two nurseries (our wholesale and Forest Heart ecoNursery) and arrange of services that include contracting, consultancy and education. But I digress...for the real heroes are all those folks out there who call the range home and who put their time and resources into restoring their land in a selfless act of generosity for which we will all benefit. Corridors have been planted that link isolated remnants and

Headwater Rivers

W

HO KNEW THAT the various small streams and creeks we see and enjoy on the Blackall Range are the source of four important rivers that flow across South East Qld. They are the water supply for a growing population, for primary industries, manufacturing and for all activities dependent on water at some stage of their life cycle. These rivers are the Mary, flowing north and emptying into the Great Sandy Strait south of Hervey Bay, the Stanley, a major tributary of the Brisbane river, the Mooloolah and the Maroochy. The Obi Obi, flowing under the bridge at the northern entrance to Maleny is an important headwater

stream for the Mary, which it joins via Baroon Pocket. Other well-known headwater streams are Petrie Creek and Paynter Creek rising on the eastern escarpment, Stony Creek flowing through Bellthorpe State Forest, and Skene’s Creek, flowing through Kondalilla National Park. All are augmented by smaller and often spring fed creeks. The Blackall Range is a major catchment for these creeks. We all live in a catchment. Why is this important? Well, we all prefer clean water and our activities on our land impact water quality. Maintaining healthy vegetation along creek banks filters run-off and

reduces the quantity of sediment entering our creeks. Fly out of the Sunshine Coast airport after really heavy rain and the sediment stream from the mouth of the river is very obvious, and alarming. We all know that prevention is better than cure, and less costly, so let’s look after our small creeks, keep our soil where it belongs and at the very least reduce weed infestation along creek banks. This does of course apply to government entities as well as private landholders. We are incredibly fortunate that platypus can still be seen in the early morning right in the heart of Maleny. The Obi Obi is a living stream able to support these fascinating animals. So, keep up the revegetation of our environment, look after your small stream and celebrate the results.

help the animals and plants (that call those remnants home) to survive. Creek banks have been planted that will reduce erosion and improve water quality – a shared resource to us all. Forests have been planted that will absorb carbon from the atmosphere, stabilise landscape, improve soil quality. Habitat has also been increased to provide homes for wildlife through the installation of nest boxes, snags in creeks (dead trees, not sausages – just in case you were wondering!) and revegetation. We are all fortunate to be part of this community, a community that is so active in restoring health to the landscape, through the actions of so many passionate individuals and groups. But there’s so much more to be done. Many of us are concerned with the loss of rainforests in South America or South East Asia, but what we often forget is that a little closer to home we are fortunate to live in one of the earth’s great biodiversity hotspots and that the fate of these ecosystems and their diversity is in our hands. So, thank you to all those local heroes out there who are busy restoring these ecosystems, particularly all the Land for Wildlife legends! Remember we all need nature and nature needs us!

eep November 3 free for the range Kindy Community Fun Day! There will be plenty to celebrate. The kindy was recently successfully awarded a Small Assistant Grant from the Department of early Childhood and Community engagement. “This grant will go towards a musical art installation in our bush Food Garden,” Kindy Director margaret Taylor shared, “with the formal ‘opening’ of the art installation at our annual Community Fun Day.” The event runs from 9.30am to 12 noon with an official opening by Cr Greg rogerson at 10.30am. The musical installation is currently being completed by local artist, Glen Christie, a transformative artist best known for his musical sculptures made from recycled materials. “He has taken his knowledge of creating music and art from recycled and repurposed material to many schools and remote aboriginal communities,” margaret explained. musically, Glenn uses a harmonic scale in his sculptures. This means that even the most inexperienced user can achieve the most beautiful harmonic sounds. This is important in the emotional connection to the music and sound in the environment. margaret said, “I have for a long time wanted a musical installation in our beautiful kindy grounds. The inspiration to use Glenn Christie came about through a ‘show and tell’ item one day. It was harmonically tuned recycled ‘coke’ bottles that he had helped children make at a school fair. “I recognised an artist who knows about music and who echoes our kindy’s commitment to sustainability.” over the past few years, with parents’ kind donations, the kindy has developed a bush Tucker Garden area with a ‘yarning circle’ for the children to play in and explore how the indigenous people of the area may have sourced their food. “The interactive musical sculptures (three in all) will be a part of this story, as the form of the sculptures are of local mary river Cod and a bejewelled Goanna.

prING HAS definitely sprung! The properties we care for have been a riot of colour, lots of exotic plants like camelias, magnolias, tibouchinas, azaleas and loropetalum in full bloom, and, love them or hate them for being an exotic weed, it is hard to ignore the beauty and perfume of a rose. As glorious as it is to wallow in these oceans of floral magnificence, my real love is for the endemic species of the plateau. A part of me resonates deeply with our naturally occurring flora, and the subtle sense of place that they are imbued with. There are more than13 different species of lily pilly, Syzygium genus, that occur locally, some shrubs and some

trees, and they all produce a brilliant show of colour when they put on new foliage, ranging from pinks and purples, yellows, right through to coppery bronze. This is in addition to their delicate creamy blossoms in late spring and summer, followed by delightful pink and purple edible berries. They are quite hardy and fast growing, they make great screens, they can be pruned and even topiaried, and ringtailed possums love to nest in them. They are also a great food source for fruit eating birds such as doves and pigeons. As a slightly bigger tree I also love the White Ash, Alphitonia petriei, with layers of creamy yellow flowers visible on our roadsides now, see photo.

Cronies T

HAT’S WHAT HAPPENS when you make a captain’s pick, choose your mates to fill important jobs because … well, basically because they are your mates.

We have often been told that Malcolm Turnbull didn’t really have mates – associates, contacts, acquaintances and plenty of them, but few if any intimates beyond his immediate family. However Justin Milne was probably the nearest thing around to a Turnbull crony. The two had been colleagues of a kind in the Ozemail days and had remained on relative close terms ever since, so it seemed logical for the Prime Minister of the day to bump his friend up to one of the most sensitive jobs available – chairman of the ABC board.

If Turnbull doesn’t like journalists like Emma Alberici and Andrew Probyn they have to go – get rid of her, and him. Turnbull may not have said so in so many words, but Milne had no doubt what he meant. After all, the men were cronies.

The last Labor government tried to break the cycle by setting up a selection panel to appoint board members on merit but, once the coalition got back, Tony Abbott stacked the selection panel, even resurrecting the appalling Albrechtsen.

And there was no need for telepathy when Milne discerned Triple J planned to move its Hottest Hundred away from Australia Day – he knew the Prime Minister would go ballistic. So the solution was simple – toss the crew overboard to save the ship, or at least the money for his precious Jetstream, which he apparently thought was the same thing.

And this is where, and why, we are stuck today. So what next? The new acting chair, air force officer turned real estate mogul, Kirstin Ferguson, was only available for interview by the ABC and refused to tell it anything anyway.

Milne was essentially a businessman, with no discernible experience in journalism or broadcasting, but obviously this did not matter – after all, six of the other seven members of the board, all appointed by the coalition government came from much the same background.

Even Rupert Murdoch’s most assiduous allies in his feud against the ABC and all its works, found this a bit much and vigorously bucketed Milne. A cynic might think they were more worried about saving the patron’s commercial interests from Jetstream, but at least they showed more sense than Milne himself, who still believes he did nothing wrong – he was acting in the best interests of his corporation by sacrificing his journalists to suck up to Turnbull and Mitch Fifield.

Only the staff-elected director, Jane Connors, had hands-on knowledge of the media, and in particular the special needs and demands of running Aunty’s nephews and nieces, and apart from being hopelessly outnumbered by the bean counters, she was seldom brought into their main interest – which, it has since transpired, was placating a hostile government.

This is not only clearly counter to the ABC’s charter – it would essentially make his own role redundant. After all, if the government is really to be the one in charge of the ABC, why not cut out the middleman and make Fifield chairman – and managing director and perhaps news director and why not throw in the job of weatherman as well.

Apparently this was Milne’s principal preoccupation – that, and securing money for his pet project, digitising the ABC, which meant the two obsessions dove-tailed very neatly.

And this is the nub of it: Milne acknowledges the ABC as a national broadcaster, but not a public broadcaster in the true sense. Like so many political players, he seems to conflate the public interest with the national interest, by which he means the government’s interests.

This was what he really meant by saving the national broadcaster – it had nothing to do with the separation of powers between him and his managing director, and where there was conflict, he did not hesitate to throw her under the bus. The logic seemed to be that after all, Turnbull had given him the job, so by definition Turnbull was his superior, and thus his word was law. Of course he never said anything directly – of course. And of course Rupert Murdoch does not tell his editors what to do. He doesn’t have to – from the moment they are appointed they know precisely what is expected from the their paymaster, and so it was for Justin Milne.

Milne’s example and his fall was the most blatant and, let’s face it, stupid excess of cronyism over appointing the ABC board, but it was certainly not the first: governments from both sides have rewarded their supporters with what some see as a sinecure but others as a key weapon in the endless culture wars. The most blatant stack was when John Howard gave directorships to lunar right luminaries Janet Albrechtsen, Keith Windschuttle and Paul Brunton – all had less qualifications for the job than even Turnbull’s cronies, but were regarded (by Howard) as reliable zealots in the crusade.

HINTERLAND TIMES – OC TOBER 2018

A more credible senate inquiry is foreshadowed, but will have to wait till parliament resumes, which Fifield and Morrison fervently hope will take the issue off the boil. And in The Australian, the fulltime ABC basher Chris Kenny told his gullible readers that of course the ABC was a Green-left nest of parasites but Godfather Rupert has nothing to do with Newscorp’s relentless campaign against it – and, never one to let the facts spoil a good vendetta, Kenny signally failed to mention that Rupert has always seen the ABC as a hated rival to his commercial interests – especially Fox News. Which leads to a serious dilemma: the mad right, including the Liberal machine as well as its paid propaganda arm the Institute of Public Affairs, wants the ABC privatised. But that would put it in direct competition with the commercials for advertising revenue, to the detriment of, among others, Fox. Fortunately Morrison and Fifield realise that the voters would never stand for that, so will, presumably, pursue their war of attrition, slowly starving the public broadcaster to death. And of course the first step will be the appointment of a new chairman. Another Justin Milne is unlikely – you only get one like him in a lifetime. But there must be plenty of other willing cronies around. Watch this space. Watch it on the ABC while you still can. The war is not over yet.

ReaL estate ‘Moon Cottage’

Buy with confidence in the heart of Maleny!

1334 Landsborough Maleny Road

I

‘Moon Cottage’ was originally a 1900s Gold Miner’s cottage in Conondale. The cottage was dismantled and rebuilt in its current location in the 1920s. Bullock teams would pass by the cottage on their way from retrieving enormous trees felled for timber. In 2005 it was purchased by the current owners who had the dream to turn it into a guest home or B&B. In 2007 the council changed the “land usage” footprint for Maleny and it was zoned for multiple uses, including guest home, B&B accommodation. Plans were drafted in 2010 and the renovations began. The renovation became a labour of love for the owners who were particular about

retaining and using original materials as much as was practicable. Throughout the building you will find original windows, doors, VJ walls, timber floors, metal pressed ceiling, fretwork and fittings including feature lights from as early as the 1910s. 1334 Landsborough Maleny Road Bed: 12 Bath: 8 Car: 8

LifeFlight Razor Challenge - Team LifeFlight

LifeFlight Razor Challenge L

IFEFLIGHT IS A not-for-profit organisation that provides an emergency medical helicopter rescue service throughout Queensland and has a base located on the Sunshine Coast, which services the Hinterland. Each mission costs $12,500. However, this is a free service to the community that requires a proportion of its funding from charitable donations and fundraising events to keep their life saving helicopters in the air. On October 6, at 5am, a group of 10 cyclists will individually push themselves to the limit raising vital funds in the LifeFlight Razor Challenge. They will ascend a 5km segment along Hunchy RoadRazorback summiting into the beautiful village of Montville, 23 times, with the accumulated ascents totalling 8848m; the altitude of Mt Everest.

LifeFlight estimate the event will take between 21 and 23 hours! ‘Everesting’ is a world wide phenomenon https://everesting.cc/ where the Hunchy-Razorback climb will be listed in the everesting hall of fame, alongside some of the most famous cycling climbs from around the globe. Brad Solomon, Senior LifeFlight flight paramedic/helicopter rescue crewman, event organiser and resident of Curramore will be one of the riders taking on this massive undertaking. The LifeFlight Razor Challenge has the generous support of the Montville Chamber of Commerce, Montville Village Hall and Chic & Sassy Boutique. Contact Mandy Hentschel 0439 745965 for more information.

Andrew Powell MP recently delivered an impassioned speech in Parliament about the arts on the Sunshine Coast, particularly in our electorate. Andrew believes we need a regional visual arts gallery on the Blackall Range and said, “I believe the Sunshine Coast is the visual arts capital of Queensland and one of the major art destinations in Australia.” He called for an arts gallery, “that would also interact with one of Australia’s most iconic natural attractions: the Glass House Mountains.” Andrew concluded he was “ready to make this vision a reality”.

Shoctober O

CTOBER IS NATIONALLY recognised as Defibrillator Awareness Month. This ‘Shoctober’, your workplace can show it cares about cardiac arrest survival and potentially save many lives. During October, the Cardiac Arrest Survival Foundation is calling on workplaces to show they care by hosting their own Shoctober event as a Defibrillator Awareness Program. A Shoctober event helps people in the workplace know what to do in the case of a sudden cardiac arrest. This five-minute experience will raise awareness about what a defibrillator is and how simple they are to use.

All you need is a space or meeting room for people to use the DefibMats while watching the defib simulation video (accessible online). Defibrillators are classified as AED (automated external defibrillator) or SAED (semi-automated external defibrillator. AEDs are the devices found in shopping centres, airports, aquatic centres and other public places designed to be used by the general public. Although AEDs provide clear and simple instructions to use, attending a first aid course through providers such as St John’s Ambulance or Royal Life Saving is highly recommended for all. Downloading the St John First Responder App to your phone is also a good idea so you can locate an AED in an emergency. The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild recently had their defibrillator, which is vitally important to them, stolen. Spokesperson Dave Banister said, “The frustration is the thieves probably chucked it in the bushes somewhere, not knowing what it was.” Register online to host a Shoctober event and order your DefibMats. Proceeds from these DefibMats are tax deductible and essential to realising the Foundation's mission. Visit: http://www.shoctober.org.au

Mental health in adolescence?

O

CTOBER 10 MARKS World Mental Health Day to raise awareness of mental health issues and mobilise efforts in support of mental health.

The World Health Organisation shares that adolescence and the early years of adulthood are a time of life when many changes occur, for example changing schools, leaving home, and starting university or a new job. For many, these are exciting times. They can also be times of stress and apprehension however. In some cases, if not recognised and managed, these feelings can lead to mental illness. The expanding use of online technologies, while undoubtedly bringing many benefits, can also bring additional pressures, as connectivity to virtual networks at any time of the day and night grows.

among adolescents is a major issue in many countries and can lead to risky behaviours such as unsafe sex or dangerous driving. Eating disorders are also of concern.

Half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14, but most cases go undetected and untreated. In terms of the burden of the disease among adolescents, depression is the third leading cause.

If you would like to talk with someone for yourself, or regarding someone you care about, ring Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636 (24hours/7 days per week) or contact the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre between 9am – 3pm Monday-to-Friday for details of the next safeTALK workshop on 5499 9345.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. Harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs

You can also visit www.1010.org.au for a list of resources and help.

Preventing chronic problems

W

HILE SCIENTISTS are discovering genes that predispose us to certain disorders, how we eat and Wendy Rosenfeldt live plays a large part in whether the tendency will turn into a full blown disease. Serious or chronic health problems are at least partly a result of going against the laws of nature that support good health over a long period of time. Our physiology is highly intelligent, capable of maintaining balance despite an often random input of food, sleep and exercise. We have homeostatic feedback loops that keep our bodies in a state of relatively stability; our body temperature is maintained while the environmental temperature may fluctuate similarly our blood oxygen levels are maintained even at high altitudes. Our physiology is highly adept at keeping balanced despite the outside changes and we often take this for granted. While the body seems to cope with overeating, not eating, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, excessive exercise and a myriad of toxic and chemical influences, it does appreciate a balanced routine of regular exercise, meals and rest. While some people may bemoan their lack of resilience to chemicals, alcohol, heavy food and overwork, this sensitivity helps them not to go too far off track. While others may not seem bothered by a large meal at night, drinking a bottle of wine or working till 2am, this does not mean it is not having

an effect. Similarly maintaining the same pace of life when we are sick and medicating the symptoms can cause more serious problems down the track. Sickness or discomfort from a headache to a simple cold; from menstrual problems to digestive disturbances is your body crying out that something is wrong. Taking the time out to treat the problem and rest can prevent an imbalance from becoming a chronic condition. Taking pain killers and ignoring the symptoms does not make them go away; it only silences the body’s protests temporarily but eventually they will just get louder and more painful. Chronic conditions can be reversed using the Ayurvedic wisdom of life but they take longer. Better to eat, sleep and exercise in tune with nature’s daily cycles, rest when you are tired or sick and listen to the whispers of imbalance before they manifest into the painful cries of disease. However, if a disorder has already taken hold, using nature’s daily, monthly and seasonal rhythms and embracing the intelligence present in fresh food, herbs and spices will go a long way in supporting your physiology’s return to good health. Wendy Rosenfeldt is a Maharishi Vedic Health Educator and Teacher of Transcendental Meditation. Please call Wendy on 5499 9580 or 0438 507 188 for an Ayurveda consultation or to learn Transcendental Meditation.

Do you ever wonder? T

HERE ARE MANY ways we can live our lives. One way is to just skim on the surface of life and accept what you’re told as true without investigation, another is to over investigate everything to the point of neurotic anxiety, and the third is to simply check out information. If you didn’t like school too much you’re less likely to have enjoyed the wonder of simple research that gives you a broader understanding than is generally available. There are many extraordinary events and pieces of information available to each of us now days. The internet, though sprinkled with disinformation, is still a valuable resource, as are our libraries. The thrill of learning has unfortunately been replaced for many by the invention of TV and the captivation of readily available movies that entertain us and provide a nice place to just relax, often not talk with those around us and just not think for a while. Get your camera out and go take a few photos of the sky when chemtrails, the effect of geo engineering, are being applied to our beautiful blue skies; take a few photos of the white lines that appear seemingly out of nowhere, and then take the same area photos within perhaps 5, 10 mins and notice how the lines morph into clouds. Perhaps you might even notice that on the days when this activity is most prevalent you seem to have more sinus problems than usual. Start a food diary and correlate what you eat to how you feel, how

your energy runs and how your moods are from day to day. See if you notice the effect of your diet on your general mood and wellbeing. And, if you see a pattern, consider switching to organic food, or if that’s not possible then food as close to how nature manifests it, allowing for the chemicals that they are doused with, it’s still better for you than lifeless and chemically enhanced food. You need to do your own research, check out the research around movement, the effect of your thoughts and feelings on your body chemistry, the effect of artificial light and its influence on everything from hormone disruption and cancer and how a simple product like melatonin can balance this. Remember how a little honey on a spoon helped a sore throat? and then read up on the research about Aspartame (Nutra Sweet) and sugar and maybe leave those lozenges alone. The world is a little more complicated now, so make conscious choices that create an internal and external environment that supports the miraculous function of the beautiful body and mind you were gifted with. ADVERTORIAL

The Three Sides

Headache,

of Optometry Although my profession primarily is about giving people their best vision, it is also about reviewing the eye health of each patient. I have mentioned some of these topics in previous articles e.g. cataracts.

thanks to a pain in the neck?

But there is a third side to our profession which undoubtedly is much appreciated by patients and that is the retail side. Almost all my patients are looking for a frame that looks good, feels good as well as fulfilling their visual needs.

R

ECURRENT HEADACHE can persist for years and there are many causes. Tension-type headache, migraine, and headaches because of a neck joint disorder are three common types. These neck-related headaches are commonly called ‘cervicogenic’ headache, usually felt on one side of the head. You'll find it is always the same side and they don't swap sides like migraine. It always includes neck pain, is mild-to-moderate intensity, and neck movements are stiff and painful in a cervicogenic headache. Typically, it starts in the neck and then moves into a headache. This is opposite to migraine and tension-type headaches. Symptoms of different types of headaches, like neck pain and tenderness, are often quite similar - so it can be confusing. Your physiotherapist will first examine you to determine if your symptoms fit the cervicogenic headache pattern, as each type requires a different treatment method. There are so many possible causes of neck problems: a car accident, sport injury, and osteoarthritis in neck joints after middle age can all cause trauma. Poor posture is also a common cause. The evidence is growing - physiotherapy treatment is the best management for cervicogenic headaches (and may assist with other headache types too). You'll be given a program for manual therapy, exercise, work practice advice and education.

“Eyewear may sometimes be essential to see clearly, but it doesn’t have to be without style.” At Maleny Optical we know that not only do you want to see well, but also love the look and feel of your spectacles.
