Local Musings struck a chord with me this month, raising the issue of dealing with crime in schools. This is tackled by Doug Patterson, and he makes some extremely valid points! Music & mental health Emily relaxing on her veranda at her beloved Obi Obi Valley home
Emily Maguire has been a huge success in the UK, touring with American greats like Don McLean and Dr Hook, as well as many other popular UK artists. Now it’s the Sunshine Coast’s turn to enjoy Emily’s ‘trademark lyric-rich songs and supremely emotive voice bathed in lush instrumentation’.
M
usician Emily Maguire is nestled in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland with her equally talented musician husband Christian Dunham who, coincidentally, has toured extensively with legendary guitarist Kevin Borich.
by JUDY FREDRIKSEN
Emily is passionate about songwriting, sharing her mantra that “music to me is all about uplifting, comforting and inspiring people”.
Welcoming to our team with great excitement is Taleah Hayes ! Specializing in Cutting, Blonde Colouring, Formal Hair, Up styles and Make up, Taleah brings the complete package with a bubbly personality that everyone falls in love with.
Earning a merit in her first music exam at age three, it’s not surprising that Emily is an accomplished cellist, pianist, guitarist, flautist and also plays the recorder.
the onset of a chronic nervous system disorder left her debilitated, in constant pain, and house-bound by age 21. Meanwhile, the rest of her friends were working or at university, all having a good time. With some encouragement from Christian, she taught herself to play guitar and progressed onto writing hundreds of songs in her bedroom, staring at the world outside her window. Despite the bleak prospect this image conjures up for many of us, the circumstances were a catalyst for Emily. “I was just so inspired by discovering this thing that I could do … this combination of poetry and music was such a revelation to me … songwriting – that’s all I wanted to do.
But success has not come easily to this spirited songstress. It took several tragedies to strip her soul bare of human drudgery, forcing her to delve deep into her torment and unexpectedly uncover her creative genius.
“The illness suddenly became a blessing in disguise. Even the pain didn’t matter

anymore. None of it mattered, as long as I had my guitar, my pen and paper and I could be writing songs, I didn’t care that it took me 20 minutes to walk down the street on my walking sticks.” Over the next seven years, Emily’s health made remarkable improvements and she overcame the constant pain.
Following the publication of her book, Emily performed in mental health hospitals and day care centres in Bristol and Manchester, leaving her audience of staff, carers and patients deeply moved by her songs and inspired by her openness and willingness to share her experiences of psychosis and depression.
Churning out song after song, she eventually released her first album, Stranger Place, in 2004. This secured Emily a spot at The Borderline, an iconic music venue in London which has hosted countless big-name artists.
All the while though, she continued to produce albums, noting on the sleeve of her fifth: “I wanted to say that even in the midst of suffering there is hope, there is potential, there is even joy. That a bit of blue is sometimes a good thing: to make you think, reassess, change direction, find some freedom in this crazy world we live in.”
But after touring the UK with her second album, Keep Walking, Emily was launched into the international stratosphere when a fan sent a copy of her CD to BBC Radio 2 – the most popular radio station in the UK with 15 million weekly listeners.
In 2018, her dedication towards mental illness awareness was formally recognised when she was awarded the Mogens Schou Award for Public Service and Advocacy by the International Society for Bipolar Disorders.
Radio 2 played her song, Back Home, and in no time, Don McLean, Dr Hook and other well-known singer/ songwriters were all seeking out this exciting new talent to be their support act.
Emily and Christian are now happily living in the Obi Obi Valley close to Christian’s family, sharing their enormous back yard with a menagerie of goats, chickens, wallabies, hares and birdlife.
Of that time, Emily says, “I loved it! I’d gone from playing to about 20 people in a church hall to playing in front of 4,000 people at the Royal Albert Hall (with Don McLean). That was one of the best nights of my life!”
When I ask her what advice she would have for anyone struggling with mental health issues, especially during erratic covid lockdowns, her response flows easily.
Although her physical health had improved, her life continued to be plagued by breakdowns and mental episodes. Finally, she decided to go public about her mental illness by publishing an extraordinary book Start Over Again, a brutally honest and deeply intimate account of her experiences of dealing with bipolar disorder.
“I really think that creativity is one of the things that saves us as human beings. Having a creative outlet, doesn’t matter what it is, it might be art, craft, building, gardening … having that outlet is a way of focusing the mind and focusing that energy outwards. “Creative energy is very powerful – it can make you feel fulfilled. Music can be a way to express feelings that may be hard to put into words.”
Emily is eagerly looking forward to seeing her latest music and poetry projects gain wings as she tours Eudlo, Maleny and Pomona in September with Christian and local accomplished string players, sisters Louise and Sarah King. If you would like to be uplifted by Emily’s soulful music, details and tickets for her Hinterland Tour 2021 are available through her website at emilymaguire.com.

DYING WITHOUT A WILL – WHAT HAPPENS? In the last two issues of Hinterland Times I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”. Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended beneficiaries. One example of an unintended beneficiary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death. The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of intestacy. Here are some examples: • If you are married/de facto with no children, your spouse takes 100%; • If you are married/de facto with one child your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided equally between the spouse and the child • If you are married/de facto with two or more children your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children. In situations where you do not have any close relatives the rules provide that your estate must go to relatives that are further removed from you.
Management Committee members for Old Witta School, David Bongiorno, Sarah Stirling, Grant Fincher and Jen Clarke
The Old Witta School is a building steeped in local history, and the current Old Witta School Management Committee is working incredibly hard to ensure the site remains an integral part of the local community.
T
he term ‘future-proofing’ is used a lot during my visit to the Old Witta School. The committee and caretaker team are both deeply invested in the future of this much-loved building.
by JACQUI HENSEL
Grant Fincher (President) and Sarah Stirling (Caretaker) took time out of their busy day to share their exciting plans with me for next year and beyond. “The Old Witta School building will be 100 years old in 2025, which is a silver lining as we thought it was this year,” says Grant. “With Covid 19 still around we would have to cap numbers. By 2025 let's hope we will have seen the back of it! There are conflicting records on the actual date of the school. However, we were sent a newspaper article from 1925, so we finally had a definitive answer on the date.” Although still in early stages of planning the celebrations, the committee would love to have a recreation of life in 1925 as part of the centenary event.
Another problem with dying intestate is the need for court approval for the appointment of someone to administer your estate. In a will you would appoint an executor of your choice. However with an intestacy, your loved ones would have to apply to the Supreme Court for an administrator to be appointed. In the absence of a suitable person the Supreme Court may appoint the Public Trustee.
“It’s more than just a lovely old hall in a scenic setting. Everyday people come here to walk their dogs or play cricket or footy with their kids. The grounds are always open to the public unless there is an event in progress,” says Grant. “We still have people in our community who went to school here and they love the fact that it is being managed and preserved for future generations,” he continues with pride.

In January 1893 the name was changed to Teutoburg Provisional School and to Teutoburg State School in January 1909. FANTASTIC AGENT “We are lucky to have Sarah who, as a horticulturist, has been instrumental in our wildlife planting. Just over two years ago we planted 512 rainforest and koala habitat trees such as Propinqua, Queensland Blue Gums and Grandis. “We had a lot of help from many community groups and locals. The trees are absolutely astounding now at four and five meters tall. We have had a koala sighting this week, very near to the new trees,” Grant says excitedly. “The school is a ‘Land for Wildlife’ site and that means we are able to tap into the Sunshine Coast Council for assistance and knowledge. We have had wonderful support from our local council member Winston Johnston. He’s been just brilliant. “We have successfully obtained grants for arborist work so we could look after the existing shade trees that give our site its bucolic ambiance. It’s so beautiful and we want to ensure it remains so for the community,” explains Grant. Many locals use the hall, but there are also art shows, children’s parties, wakes, community group meetings, dance classes and yoga. It is booked every week. It was even used by someone to record music as it has such good acoustics. “It’s probably best known for the markets that are held here every third Saturday of the month,” says Sarah. “They are very popular with locals and visitors. The stall holders are quite varied. You can find fresh produce, jams, chutneys, homemade cheese, honey, plants and even sausages. The Maleny Pie Guy is a regular as is the Little Coffee Van. But there is also locally produced craft,
art, jewellery and textiles.” The refurbishments include a new kitchen and electrical system, powered sites out onto the grass, increased water supply, and polished floors. The committee now also plans to repaint in the original heritage-listed colours. “We have done more than necessary to ensure the Old Witta School is a viable option for the community to use for anything they can imagine. The hall is a low-cost option for events with under 60 people (in the hall). Marquees can be used for larger groups,” Sarah explains. “We need the hall to continue to be a popular choice by the community as that helps fund its upkeep and ensures its longevity. So we have updated as much as we can, and it has to remain just as it is because of the heritage overlay, so it is maintaining what is here now.” On the wish list is new bathroom facilities including a new septic system, however they are a significant cost.
“We cannot recommend Monica highly enough. She was ethical, friendly and acted only with the highest integrity & professionalism in our house purchase. Qualities that are in my experience, sadly lacking by most in her profession these days. Her communication was also excellent and timely, making our purchase a totally stress free and an enjoyable experience. Thank you Monica.” C & L Holland (Buyer)

“The committee is a great group who really have this place at heart,” says Grant, “and we are looking for new members for the ‘Friends of the Old Witta School’. “The best way to ensure we keep in contact with everyone who likes to help us is through membership of this group. And it’s a bargain at $5 per year!” Grant laughs. “We want the community to get as much use out of it as they can. We’d like to see more groups using the hall and grounds. We have improved it so much and we’d like people to just come and use it,” concludes Grant. However, she deferred teaching school after one year, as a path in community service unfolded, working at the Louisa Women’s Refuge in Queanbeyan. At the age of 24, with many experiences advocating for women, including fighting racism and domestic violence, Ann Donoghue moved on: “I worked in Canberra for a government community agency, Youth Accommodation Group, the peak body that represented youth accommodation services. “Because Canberra was not self-governed back then, we met with the federal ministers and related the needs of youth refuges.

“We also identified that there was nowhere for young people to go after they left the refuge, so we put in a submission for an unemployed youth housing scheme, and it was adopted. Canberra was the first place to allow young people to form a group and then apply to the housing commission for a government house.” The intensity of social activism in Canberra motivated Ann to cut loose and travel. “At that time, I was disillusioned with the public education system, restricted by red tape, and had great dreams that I could make a difference, that young people could shine and find their passion and purpose in life. “I had an interview, got the job, and my partner and I became Queenslanders. I felt like I’d come home.” Ann Donoghoe soon made her mark. She began at the River School in 1997 and progressed to the role of Principal, made official in 2019. “The difference between being a classroom teacher and Principal is that in the classroom I saw things from a micro-level, as Principal I see it from a macro-level. I see all the parts come together and that is exciting, interesting, and challenging. “The neohumanist philosophy really resonates with my values because you’re looking at the whole child. We can’t teach them everything, but what we can teach them is to be the best they can be. “If they can walk out of here with a smile on their face feeling good about who they are and what they can do and what a difference they can make, then I feel we’ve done a great job.”

My interest sparked when Ann spoke of the school code and the restorative approach to resolving conflict. “We have a very strong behaviour understanding policy. If you are safe and happy, you are free to learn. However, it’s not just me being safe and happy, it’s about me contributing to the safety and happiness of all by using kind words and actions—by respecting another’s private space. “We teach them skills, so they know there is an expectation. It’s called behaviour understanding because we use the restorative approach where conflict is resolved through conversations. “It’s powerful because they have to understand what they’ve done that’s affected someone else. As adults, these children will know that they don’t have to use violence and anger to solve situations.
Principal, set up a restorative practice business for teachers. They went out to schools and taught teachers how to work restoratively with children. Two years later, when Ann became Principal, Sue took over the business and continues this valuable work. “I’ve known Sue since Women OutFront days. In 1998, local women ran ‘chalk-ups’ at the UpFront Club in Maleny. It developed as an express need in the community from women performers seeking a safe and supportive forum through which to perform and build their confidence. “Back then, performance opportunities were very male dominated. Sue and I took it over in 1999. It was so successful that we ended up moving to the community centre. “We developed this beautiful big team of women— visual arts, organisational, the musicians’ team… it was an artistic feast. “Another important part about the restorative process is the person who’s been harmed gets a voice and they say how that makes them feel and what they need.”
“There were some men in the groups, but it was always the women ‘out front’. We did it for about 15 years—it was incredible. It doesn’t exist anymore because there isn’t a need.”

I ventured to ask Ann what she does in her spare time: “I’m currently making a crocheted blanket and love to read fiction and cook—when time allows, I enjoy making sourdough. I run too, as I’m into health and fitness.” For a time, Ann and friend Tash entered a partnership to run a small food business, Tashan, as a creative outlet for their cooking passion. “We made and sold samosas at a number of Maleny events until we could no longer keep up demand while still working our main jobs.” To conclude, Ann draws on hindsight and reflects: “My happiest times have been when I’ve been really involved, usually voluntarily, helping other people. I really believe the greatest happiness comes through service. “People say, ‘I want to be happy.’ You can’t just be happy, happiness comes to you through doing, and then you can feel it.” Ann selling samosas at the Tashan stall – 2016
REAL ESTATE COMMENT BY ROGER LOUGHNAN
SOME RULES FOR BUILDING INSPECTIONS In recent times due to the frenzy in the market, we have heard of offers on properties whereby the buyers have foregone a clause to cover “satisfactory building reports”. We believe that unless you have extensive building experience, that this is a serious mistake. Below are some rules we recommend to help protect property buyers. 1. Always get a Building Inspection Report
before you buy a home. Make sure there is a clause in the contract of sale that your purchase is subject to a satisfactory report.
2. Allow ample time for any supplementary
inspections. If the Building Report reveals problems, you will need time to consult other professionals, such as structural engineers, plumbers and electricians. You may also need to arrange quotes for matters needing attention and/or negotiate a satisfactory solution with the sellers.
3. Always accompany the inspector during
the inspection. Go with the inspector and be sure to ask lots of questions. It’s going to be your home, make sure you know what you are buying.
4. Building inspector recommended by the
agent. Some inspectors pay kickbacks to agents so check that is not the case with your chosen inspector.
5. Professional Indemnity Insurance. Ask for
proof that the inspector has paid-up indemnity insurance. Don’t use an inspector who won’t give this proof.
6. Ask to see a sample report prepared by the
building inspector. Find out how thorough the report is likely to be by asking to see sample reports.
7. Make sure your own [independent] solicitor
sees the building inspection report. Discuss the report with your solicitor before you make your final decision to purchase.
8. Be FAIR to the seller and the inspector.

Most homes have some faults. If you use minor faults or faults that were already disclosed to you before the inspection report to try to negotiate a lower price, this is not fair to the seller. Be fair to others and others are more likely to be fair to you. Pay a good inspector well and pay fast.

almwoods is home to many things: popular eateries, a welcoming bookstore, a top-quality butchers, one of the best bakeries on the coast, a lively hotel/pub, loads of sports facilities, and various clubs and community groups. One such group, Little Village Theatre (LVT), is busy rehearsing for their new show, An Evening with Irving, to be held on October 30 and 31 at Buderim War Memorial Hall. To raise funds for the group, they have organised a fashion parade on September 4, 2pm, at Millwell Road Community Centre, Maroochydore, with talented young fashion designer, Cassandra Pennisi. Muriel, Cassandra’s mother, was the linchpin for this collaboration, as she is involved with LVT and immediately suggested Cassandra for the fundraiser when the idea materialised. Cassandra herself is enthusiastic about design. One can safely say she loves it with a passion that became evident early on in her life. “When I was in high school, I created a figurative sculpture in a ballet pose; my visual art teacher said it was out of the ordinary to think and create in 3D, whereas for
me it was normal. I translate what I see into designs.” Cassandra won the art award, and realised she was able to think “differently” from a lot of her peers when it came to visualising. The creative seed was sown… “I was that child who would sit and draw, while others watched TV,” she smiles. The family lived in Rockhampton and after Cassandra finished high school she attended a week-long design

There are an increasing number of records of Bunyas dying on the Blackall Range over the last few years, so has Bunya Dieback arrived here? We asked Spencer Shaw of Forest Heart ecoNursery to share his knowledge on this important development.

“T
his is a story that has quite significant implications for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland,” said Spencer.
“In a few media reports you may have seen or heard about a disease called Bunya Dieback afflicting the Bunya trees at the Bunya Mountains National Park (200km west of here and south of Kingaroy).” Spencer believes we need to take notice. “It does appear our Bunya are also under threat ... “ Spencer coined the term ‘Bunyageddon’ but his amusing phrase is merely to make people stop and look; to encourage them to find out more. Research undertaken at the Bunya Mountains National Park into the cause of Bunya Dieback is that a species of Phytophthora, a water mould/ oomycetes, is responsible.
“Through our production nursery we are also helping with preservation of the Bunya by growing thousands in tubestock, and larger-sized plants to help get more young Bunyas back onto this country. “We also want to raise awareness that Bunya Dieback has potentially arrived on the Blackall Range and gather records of Bunya tree deaths, that we can use to help progress the research needed to confirm and eventually manage this.” If you have a Bunya death on your property or know of one on public land please email details, including your name, contact phone, address, photo and GPS location of tree if available, to spencer. shaw@brushturkey.com.au
“Phytophthora lives in and is transported in soil, and through its life cycle damages the roots of trees, eventually preventing the tree from getting any nutrients or water,” said Spencer. “The initial symptoms of infection are dieback of the tree crown, followed by death of the whole tree over a few months.”

The species of phytophthora thought to be responsible for the Bunya Dieback is Phytophthora multivora. It appears Bunya dieback was introduced into the area by movement of soil, on shoes and or vehicles. “So, without wanting to create a major panic, apart from the invention of the word Bunyageddon,” smiled Spencer, “we need to look at how we, the current stewards of this country, can ensure that these magnificent trees whose origin goes back hundreds of millions of years, survive into the future.” Brush Turkey Enterprises and Forest Heart ecoNursery have been proactive in contacting National Parks at the Bunya Mountains to find out more about this disease and its implications both there and here. Spencer said, “We have supplied Bunya seedlings to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for their research into the cause of Bunya Dieback.

Get Lost at Gardners Falls
Gardners Falls images by Sarah Vercoe
G
ardners Falls is the kind of place you go to gaze at nature. Not the quick mental postcard kind but the lingering kind where you notice the depth of green in the trees’ leaves, the sound of water rushing over the rocks, and the feeling of serenity that washes over you if you stay long enough.

It’s a spectacle of the best kind, one that takes you under its spell and forces you to see nature for what it is: a place to escape and appreciate a slower pace of life. A popular waterfall with visitors to Maleny, whether or not you share Gardners Falls with the crowds is really just the luck of the draw. The thing is, even if you do luck out and find yourself in a sea of people, there are plenty of nooks and crannies to escape and create an experience all your own. Like a well thought out design, layers separate the forest with near vertical escarpments hiding picnic tables in their depths and concealed paths leading to a series of freshwater swimming holes. Obi Obi Creek carves its way through the middle, luring your gaze at every opportunity with a succession of mini waterfalls too pretty not to pause at. A short stroll from the carpark to the main waterfalls, you’ll likely be tempted to spread your picnic blanket at one of the hidden pockets alongside the creek. Secret enclaves beckon from the other side with vines hanging from the towering tree canopy to create an eden all your own should you wish to dip your toes in the water and make the crossing.
NEXT RETREAT IN MALENY 10th - 12th September
That’s the beauty of Gardners Falls. There’s ample opportunity to see it from a different perspective. And even if you’ve meandered the path countless times before, it doesn’t mean you’re relegated to the same experience each time you visit. Choose the path less travelled and delve into the forest. Hike down to the lower pool and swim beneath the waterfall. Or simply while away the hours marvelling at the beauty in nature from the highest point you can find.

In June 2020 his culinary journey continued to the newly opened Kondalilla Restaurant, where the owner’s philosophy of a plant- and seafood-based cuisine allowed him to express his passion for the science of food.
Fast becoming a favourite for food lovers in the hinterland, the Kondalilla Restaurant, nestled in the stunning grounds of Kondalilla Eco Resort, is well worth a visit. With a gorgeous al fresco deck space, bar and large dining area, you can relax and take in the tranquil view of Kondalilla Falls National Park.
“W
e wanted to offer something unique to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland,” explained Manager Jacqui Freeman, “and I think our restaurant does that, with our vegetarian cuisine that has a seafood and vegan influence.”
The restaurant serves breakfast with delights such as Woombye Truffle Triple Cream Brie with herb-scrambled free-range eggs; Sweet Potato Hash Browns with garlic-tossed green veggies and mushrooms, and Red Quinoa and Coconut Porridge with banana, berries and caramelised buckwheat. Lunch includes Thai Yellow Curry, Flaky Salmon Poke Bowl, Korean BBQ Tempeh, Vegetable Protein Burger, and Black Sesame Crème Brûlée with mandarin ragu. The attention to detail and the mouth-watering menu has seen consistent five-star reviews on TripAdvisor, with comments such as ‘THE best local food experience’, ‘nothing but praise for the meals and service’, ‘totally impressed with the flavours of every meal I had’.
“Sundays at Kondalilla are a blend of meals from different menus,” explained Jacqui, “and we also have snacks from 3-5pm on Thursdays to Sundays, such as grilled vegetables with black bean hummus, or tofu satay skewer; our popular ‘Native Bowl’ with green leaf salad, egg, avocado and roast macadamias, plus a delicious cheese board with relish and seasonal fruits.”

CARERS THAT DRIVE
the clients are wonderful. The response to our service has been fantastic.
Q
Admin staff work very closely with clients and supporters. Our supporters are out in the “field” and they may be taking a person from their home to a day program then picking up another person to take out to do their errands; they may take someone home from day surgery at a hospital, take clients to medical appointments and pick up shopping on the way home. Busy and rewarding.

Q
I
n 2009 Suzie Coghlan found herself on the road a great deal. With the increasing needs of two aging parents, and a child with a disability, she saw the need for a personalised service that helped people get around in their community and maintain their independence – and so, she established Carers That Drive. This service, which began in New South Wales, is now on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
Q
What can clients expect when they use Carers That Drive?
A
As we tailor our service to client needs and match three supporters to each client, they can be assured we always turn up. Our supporters are all carefully handpicked, police checked, with various qualifications, have first aid, are kind and reliable. Paul Sutton is our main man in charge of our service on the Sunshine Coast. Paul, his wife Wendy, and their family, are long time Sunshine Coast residents and very connected in the community. We have engaged six people so far in our team in the Sunny Coast and have more people we are planning to hire.
Q
What did you do before this?
What do you enjoy the most about your business?
A
There are so many aspects that are enjoyable it is hard to pick one. Building relationships with our clients and the community is inevitable and
We have hundreds of funny and moving stories forever keeping us entertained. One was a group of four elderly ladies who used to go all over town playing bridge, but mostly in the centre of the city each week, which was always hard to stop to let them out. The big construction workers in full hi vis and hardhats working on the building next door. used to go into the street with the ‘Stop’ sign to halt the traffic, while three other men would open the doors and escort the ladies into the building. We were all feeling the love! Another was taking an elderly lady into the city when they stopped at the lights and there was a young lady wearing a very short skirt and very lowcut top. The supporter commented on the way she was dressed not being very professional, to which the sweet elderly client said, “depends on which profession she works in, dear”.
Spend time with family, do some sport, reading and in the good old days, travel. If you had to share any advice connected to your business, what would it be? Be kind, enjoy what you do and build relationships.
If you are interested in joining the team at Carers That Drive, contact Suzie Coghlan directly on 0403 057051 or email suzie@carersthatdrive.com.au
From Humble Beginnings
My mother was the one that pushed me to start the business after seeing me driving all over town as my daughter could not go on any other mode of transport. She said if our family needed this service so must others.

Suzie Coghlan, Founder of Carers That Drive
Due to the popular demand of their Pomodoras balsamic dressing brand Chris and Jodi Bond have decided to close the doors of their Maleny restaurant.
For nearly 30 years I worked in the Interior Design business. Having a child with a disability and elderly parents meant a change in careers from one where I had to be on the job all the time to flexible work.
What does a 'typical' day entail for your team?
“It wasn’t an easy decision, that’s for sure, but one that now had to be made,” says Jodi, “as unfortunately Chris and I just can’t be in two places at once and our daughters (Emma aged 11 and Sarah aged 9) are not quite old enough to take over yet!” When one door closes another opens - Chris and Jodi are now hoping that they can focus more time on their Pomodoras Fine Foods business and even perhaps have a little more free time for the family.
You can now find the Pomodoras range of flavoured balsamic in over 150 stores throughout QLD, NSW and VIC. Visit the website for store locations near you: pomodoras.com.au or buy the product online via the shop. “We would like to thank all of our customers and staff for their support and friendship over the past 15 years” – Chris, Jodi, Emma and Sarah
“As product demand continues to grow right around Australia, I’m in production most days and if I’m not in production I’m doing deliveries all over the Sunshine Coast and to our distributors in Brisbane,” says Chris. “I’m sure it won’t be long until we will need to look at expanding our production and warehouse facilities, which is super exciting.”

FESTIVAL AND FEZ
SUNDAY FOLK REVIVAL
Horizon Festival, the Sunshine Coast’s premier arts and cultural celebration, runs from Friday August 27 to Sunday September 5, bringing together local and national artists to offer vibrant, immersive and entertaining experiences for all ages.
The popular Sunday Folk Revival afternoon concerts at Nambour’s Black Box Theatre are back, hosted by award-winning folk songwriter, Karen Law, and her talented musical family.
One of the many acts during the week is HT cover star Fez Faanana, performing with Briefs Factory International in the show Club Briefs (pictured). This is a wild cabaret collective using disco, circus, burlesque and variety, at the Wonderland Spiegeltent, Cotton Tree Park, Maroochydore.
The next concert is on August 22, 2-5pm, with local legend, Noel Gardner, performing with his partner Alex Bridge. Noel has been a stalwart of the Sunshine Coast folk scene for many years.
Fez, who grew up in Ipswich, Queensland, is the creative director of Briefs Factory, and he describes himself as “an idiot, a clown, a drag artiste, a dancer/prancer, a Samoan (who is not a security guard, football player nor a KFC cashier), an Australian, a legal immigrant, an antagonist, a molly-coddler, an orchestrator, and the love child of the bearded lady and ring master” (artsreview.com.au).
Enjoy music by legendary composer Lou Harrison, J.S. Bach, NZ composer Gareth Farr, Chick Corea and percussion wizards Casey Cangelosi and Payton MacDonald. Come and join Monika Koerner on flute and Jacob Enoka on percussion at the gorgeous Montville Village Hall. Prepare yourself for a whirlwind of fast fingers and flying mallets! Stay for complimentary afternoon tea and a chat afterwards! Ticket available via Try Booking: trybooking. com/BPZSF

Dear Victoria
Thank you so much for the story you put in the 'Food, drink and dine' section of June's edition about Rich and I. We received an overwhelming response from your readers who found out through your article that Rich and I were selling Little May. Because you spoke about our future plans with our Suzie June hot chocolate, we had so many people come to purchase the chocolate from Little May in support of our new venture and to wish us luck. It was so heart-warming that so many people from our amazing hinterland community felt compelled to come into Little May after seeing the paper. Rich and I are so grateful for the fun, easy, yet business focused support you and your team at the Hinterland Times have extended to us over the years. Thank you, thank you so very much. You have helped Little May become what it is and have given us the best send-off we could have hoped for.
Those who have had an NDE regard it as a spiritual experience that is life changing.
We can’t have a roundabout, because of space issues and potential damage to the nearby park, which I understand.

No computer, no show! Dear Victoria, Recently, in anticipation of attending the production of The Yeoman of the Guard, we did what we had done previously to obtain tickets – we approached the Maleny Information Centre. We were informed that the only way to purchase ticket was online. This excludes many older citizens who do not use a computer or are not comfortable making online purchases. So we missed the production!! Signed,
Warm regards Rich and Hannah Hayes

Palmwoods intersection solution So the speed limit in Palmwoods around the railway bridge has been changed to 40. This is a band aid attempt to fix a bigger problem, and many locals have seen no change in cars speed since the new signs.
Crossword No. 322
Apparently we can’t have speed humps (according to TMR) because of heavy haulage trucks and rural fire vehicles…so tell me, how do they manage to travel through Montville just fine, where they have three speed humps along their main road?
Traffic lights? Oh no, vision constraints leading up to them…. Lifting railway bridge? Too expensive… At least two pedestrian crossings to help slow the traffic and help the locals cross the roads safely? Nothing happening – STILL. Something needs to be done! So here are two solutions that could be implemented. There is road linkage from Old Palmwoods Road/McKee Road which links to Ratcliffe Road and comes out on Hunchy Road towards Montville - drivers could use this if they didn’t need to travel through the main street of Palmwoods. (It was usable years ago and now has a barricade halfway along, but this could easily be moved and the road fixed for use.) There could also be a road link from Chevallum Road, via Eudlo Road, through to Main Street at the Rifle Range Road or School Road area? Again, saving a bottleneck around the bridge, as those coming from the eastern entry to Palmwoods could go that way into town. Why are we paying council tax for a road infrastructure that doesn’t work anymore? Why is no one actually listening? So many promises, and no real results. Regards James Hilliard

The Drama of Ama
rom our varied and sometimes chaotic diet, bones, blood, tissues, cells and organ systems are created. The body tries to extract all the nutrients and goodness from what we consume to make fuel for our mind and body. How much we can absorb and utilise is dependent on the overall function of our digestive system and amounts of impurities or ama in the body. According to Ayurveda, ama means anything that is not properly processed or digested. It cannot be seen but it can be felt in the physiology and has the effect of blocking the flow of intelligence. There is a direct relationship between our digestive system and levels of ama. Even if we have a really healthy diet, if we can’t digest our food properly it sits in the stomach and creates toxins. Ama can give rise to congestion, weight gain, joint pain, skin problems, and mental sluggishness and is
underlying a lot of symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome). If the menstrual cycle is not influenced by the contraceptive pill, it is a natural cycle that cleanses impurities from the body. This is why women often feel better after they have had their period than before. Ama is increased by drugs, both prescriptive and recreational, pollution, excessive intake of alcohol, processed food and heavy foods such as meat, cheese and chocolate. Even how we prepare food and when we eat it will contribute to the ama content. Food that has been cooked and reheated in the microwave has less life force and therefore creates more ama. Meat, cheese and rich desserts will more likely produce ama if eaten for dinner than at lunchtime when the digestive fire is stronger. It is important in winter to be aware of ama, as our natural tendency is to favour heavier foods
and a more sedentary lifestyle. With the cold, dark mornings it can be harder to get up early and exercise and we might find it more appealing to snuggle up on the couch with a hot chocolate than exercise in the evenings. It is natural to accumulate some ama in the colder months and then the body will spontaneously try and purify this when spring arrives. However, to make this process more comfortable there are some simple tips for minimising ama in winter.

Eating a lighter meal for dinner can help you to wake up feeling fresher and lighter in the morning. Sipping warm boiled water helps to cleanse the sticky qualities of ama, as does adding some spices to your diet such as ginger, cloves, mustard seeds and black pepper. Daily walking will improve your digestive system and offset the sluggish feelings that can develop if ama is present.

Bright ideas for health and beauty E
arlier this year, Larissa Bright moved to Maleny from North Queensland, as her children started studying in the region. Apart from loving the lifestyle, and enjoying becoming part of the local community, Larissa has opened a new store selling her own formulations of vegan, certified cruelty-free, Australian-made skincare, body care and natural makeup. She is also the founder of biotechnology company Coral Sunscreen, so we couldn’t wait to find out more!
Q
Larissa Bright in her new Maleny store
Where did you grow up?
I grew up on a farm in regional NSW. It was a great childhood. I loved being surrounded by animals and nature. It gave me a great appreciation and respect of the land and what it provides us.
A
Q
Where did you study/train and what inspired you to move into skin care and make up?
A
I studied economics and international politics at Sydney University. It’s hilarious, as I never used the degree. I started making natural skincare products immediately after I left. It was a trip to Townsville that inspired me to start my company. I experienced the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest and Magnetic Island. I find being in nature inspiring and great for creative thinking.
Q
Please tell us more about why you started Coral Sunscreen, and the science behind it?
A
Thirteen years ago, I started researching sunscreens, as I wanted something compatible with my natural products. My search led me to the Australian Institute of Marine Science. What they told me changed my life path. The Australian corals (which are animals) over millions of years have created their own robust natural sunscreen to ensure their protection and survival at low tide when they are fully exposed to some of the harshest UV rays in the world.
Q
There is no greater science than that in nature, and I knew instantly I needed to somehow bring this sunscreen into a human application to reduce the incidence of skin cancer and fatalities associated with it. I engaged the CSIRO bio-medical division and have been working with them to duplicate the coral’s UV protection. We are so passionate about our work, as we know we are creating potentially lifesaving molecules to provide stronger and more efficient sun protection for humans.
Q
Why did you choose Maleny to live and to open your store?
A
Oh, this was an easy choice. The hinterland is beautiful, and my daughter and son love the region (we have close family friends here). Maleny for us was the perfect choice.
Q
What do you enjoy the most about your business?
A
I am so, so passionate about natural products. I always create my ranges out of necessity. For example, before my first child was born, I created my natural baby range, as I couldn’t find anything in the shops I would use on him. I also created my skincare range for myself to contain all the active ingredients I love.
A
What does a 'typical' day entail for you? For Larissa Bright Australia, I can be formulating and discussing active ingredients with my chemist, or quality testing and liaising with clients.
For Coral Sunscreen, my day involves discussions with the CSIRO scientific team, our patent lawyers and assessing molecule testing results. I hit the ground running quite early with a long to do list and I love the challenges.
Q
What’s been the most useful lesson you’ve learnt along the way with your businesses?
A
To be passionate, persistent and keep innovating. It’s important to keep moving forward if you believe you can have a positive impact on humanity and make a difference in people’s lives.
Q
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Q
If you had to share any advice connected to your business, what would it be?
A
Live it, breathe it and totally believe in your dreams. Never give up.
I love nature, give me an hour in the wilderness and I am totally re-energised. I also enjoy spending time with family, running and meditating.

Home-sweet-tree Feathertail Gliders Watch out for wildlife
by wildlife carer, RACHEL ASPINALL
T
hese adorable little creatures (pictured) are Eeny, Meeny, Miney and Moe, a quartet of Feathertail Gliders who have recently arrived into care. These little ones became orphans after their home tree was felled. Fortunately, and to my amazement, someone was able to see these tiny marsupials helpless on the ground and call a carer for help.
by SAMMY RINGER
Planigale
magine for a moment you live in a lovely suburb with everything you need close to home. You’ve lived there for years – generations in fact. Your parents and their parents before them looked after the little suburb, took what they needed to live and left the rest.
creature, but your home was soon to be a new suburb to house hundreds of people. You knew people, of course. You’d seen them before as they wandered through the bush. Was this massive ‘thing’ a new sort of ‘people’?
I
Life could be hard at times. Winter rain hammered your home and summer heat browned the trees. One day, while you were foraging for food, a strange sight appeared on the dirt track that cut through the bushland. First there was the growl of some monster creature and then a large, square animal you’d never seen before. You watched in horror and amazement as it pushed through the trees and widened the track to a muddy highway.
Frightened, you ran back to your rickety nest home and tried to tell the others what you had seen… You couldn’t. The noise was like nothing you had heard before – a growl and a smash, smash as trees came down.

The Feathertail Glider is the world’s smallest gliding mammal with an average adult weight of just 12g. They are viable from only 1g and are released after being rehabilitated at 10g.
Feathertail Gliders have flat tails with fringed hair growing on either side, resembling a feather. The tail and the membrane between their limbs helps them to glide up to 28m between trees. Their feet are webbed similarly to a frog, with sweat glands in the feet creating moisture which combined with the webbing creates a sort of sucker-cup which gliders can use to climb and cling to sheer, smooth surfaces. They’re also a very social species, living in communal groups of up to 30 individuals. They have a very sweet tooth enjoying pollen, nectar and insects as the core components of their diet.
So you fled with your family, and soon birds and possums and wallabies and your many other neighbours joined you. Deeper into the bush. To safety?
Being a human, you may never have been kicked out of your house by a bulldozer. If you had, you would write You couldn’t know it, being a mere angry letters to the editor and get yourself a showing on Four Corners and Current Affair. And it • Full tanks cleaned, would stop. minimal water loss
34
Feathertail Gliders are found in established forests and woodland as they like to nest in small hollows in trees. They can also sometimes be found nesting in abandoned bird’s nests, palms, stag horns and tree ferns. One was recently brought to me from Mapleton where it was found trying to nest in the mane of a horse!
Because they are so tiny, they have trouble staying warm and can enter a state of torpor. This means that for short periods of time their breathing slows down and the animal becomes unresponsive. Their body temperature drops almost to that of its environment, almost like a sort of self-induced coma to prolong survival as long as possible until their surroundings grow warm again.
But the creatures of the bush have no voice. Or only a few.
It never hurts to keep a careful eye out for Feathertail Gliders, particularly around recently downed trees - you never know what you might find that needs help. Rachel Aspinall is privately licensed to rescue animals and happy to do so, or will call other groups for help when needed. Phone: 0407 881 008.

Grasses
G
rasses are increasingly being recognised as important components of our landscapes, both in the revegetation and in our gardens. Whether those gardens are predominantly exotic or native, grasses add another dimension to the design. They have a spreading, fibrous root system that holds the soil in place, especially on slopes.
refractus, tussock grass, Poa labillardieri, and beach spinifex, Spinifex sericius, the last extensively used for binding coastal sand.
Sedges and their relatives are often confused with true grasses but tend to favour moister, wetter sites and are useful in or around dams and ponds. Our common lomandras belong to yet another family but perform the same soil binding function.
Tussock grass is probably the preferred growth habit in a garden situation and most grasses do best in good light along roadsides, forest edges, and popping up in disturbed areas in our suburbs.
Two excellent books by local authors, Sonia MacDonald and Stephanie Haslam, are Grasses, and Sedges, rushes and restiads. The books will help you to identify a wide range of these plants, including weed species, and help to decide where you might place them. Grasses are very much a part of healing country, the theme for last month’s NAIDOC week, such as many of our food crops: think
Grass seeds are a favourite food source for many birds. Not all will be available as tubestock at any one time, so keep an eye out for them.
Tussock grass wheat, rice, sugar cane, corn, barley, and others. Our pasture grasses include kikuyu, rye grass and others from other countries, some of which have become aggressive weeds and fire hazards in particular habitats. Exceptions are our local forest grasses, Oplismenus and Ottochloa. These two prefer filtered light and are great groundcovers in moderately open types of forest. They are best kept out of the garden as they can spread aggressively, plus climb over small shrubs. Grass is mostly underfoot but is worth growing for its use in preventing erosion, as a seed source, and it looks pretty good too.

Prehistoric creature in Maleny
The Essential Power of Sunshine
T
he Maleny Spiny Crayfish (Euastacus urospinosus) can be traced back to the days of Gondwana land and is a forest-dwelling species now restricted to the highest areas of the Blackall and Conondale Ranges, and areas around Bellthorpe.

The ambient temperatures of different latitudes impact enormously on ecological variety. For every 20 species of insects found in Tasmania, there are 200 in the Daintree. Cold climate animals can be huge compared to those found in the tropics, because the bigger you are, the smaller is the ratio of your surface area to your body’s mass; and it is through your skin that you may lose precious body heat. So, a Polar Bear is five times the size of a Malayan Sun Bear, and Tasmanian Forester Kangaroos (which must cope with snow) are larger than our Eastern Greys. In Australia, the sun can be dangerously punishing, but it is still nature’s consistent driving force. Reptiles use it to raise their blood temperature and become active, birds shift their ground and, in concert with moisture, it ripens seeds and fruit and promotes vegetation growth which produces oxygen. In early morning, I have found birds along the shady, south-facing shore of Baroon Dam to be relatively quiet; while the sunny shore opposite is alive with noise and movement. Welcome Swallows, Fairy Martins and White-breasted Woodswallows perch out in full sun. The Woodswallows huddle together on branches (called ‘clumping’) and additionally benefit from the warmth of companions. All three species hawk for insects over the water, adding extra warm-up value through exercise. Coral trees on this north-facing shore still
Dr Scott Burnett will share more about the latest known research on this curious species and what we can do as a community to ensure its further survival at the next Barung Connects talk with Barung Landcare.

have flowers – like bunches of small, scarlet bananas on their branch ends. In the bright sunshine they are visited (and squabbled over) by a procession of Honeyeaters – Blue-faced, Dusky, Lewins, Brown and New Holland. Without the sun, we would see no flowers and nectar-feeding birds would have to look for other food. It is energising warmth that frees up wildlife to relax from essential food searches and attend to pairing and the future of their species. Birds court and a male will suspend self-preservation as he finds and offers food to his mate. Scientists have discovered that, as the days grow longer, a small part of some birds’ brains begins to grow. It is the part that controls song. As daylight expands, so does the variety and richness of the birds’ singing. But now we live in a world challenged by so many unremitting symptoms of climate change, with an emphasis on increasing temperatures; yet the science of its causes and effects are there for all to understand. There is ironic tragedy in this, because life always has, and always must, come from the sun.
In the Wild
with Spencer Shaw
Spreading your Seed
W
hen it comes to seed dispersal, you may invariably think of those gaudy members of the plant kingdom who use birds to spread their seed by hiding them in a fruit. It could be said that these plants were the first beings to master the art of advertising. That is to say - the art of making you believe that you just must have their fruit, no matter how low the food value, because it’s such a lovely colour!
that, may I remind you that at least the birds only get sucked in by the advertisers when it comes to food… Then there are those free spirits of the botanical kingdom who use wind power!
conifers (excluding the Bunya of course) whose flat seeds are blown about in the summer storms and also the fine seed of eucalypts that are released to float on the breeze after a bush fire.
Ferns and mosses were amongst the earliest of plants and produce spores that are wholly spread by wind. Tree fern spore is particularly good at getting about.
The great limitation of wind dispersal is of course the wind itself. After all, what happens if a few weeks of calm weather sets in when you’ve got a big crop of fruit on!
Sure some fruits are relatively nutritious and the lucky bird that’s eaten them can roost on a warm sunny branch and relax while the digestive processes take place. However, most fruit is designed to pass straight through digestive systems as quickly as possible leaving birds feeling hungry and having to eat even more fruit – how devious!
Now I don’t want you to panic but you’re probably inhaling some at the moment, it’s everywhere! Fern spore will germinate on any moist, shady and bare patch of soil, which is great for all you revegetators out there, because ferns will turn up in your patch of developing forest all by themselves when the conditions become right.
Also, unless your seed is particularly small, then you’re going to be lucky if your seed goes any more than a kilometre. This poses a big problem for the spread and maybe survival of some of the winddispersed species in the fragmented forests of Southeast Queensland.
Before you go thinking how superior you are and how dumb birds are for getting themselves trapped in a vicious circle like
Besides the ferns many trees have evolved to spread their seed in the wind. Some familiar examples are the ancient
When it comes to tree planting, we should make sure these species are on our planting lists, particularly if no parent trees of the same species appear close by.

If you’ve been to Mary Cairncross Reserve and noticed large holes in the forest floor, it’s likely you’ve seen the burrows of the Maleny Spiny Crayfish! This elusive, endangered, prehistoric creature has called Australia home for millions of years.

There’s no place like dome A
fter spending the last few years wading in reports, red tape, and council requirements to get a building permit for their dream Aircrete dome home… things are now getting very busy for the Wild family at Elysian Falls in Flaxton on the lush Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The Wild’s dream home is a little unique… comprising of 8 arches and 4 interconnecting Aircrete domes. The largest dome has a 7m diameter and 4.6m peak! Its organic shape blends perfectly with the lush rainforest and valley views below. Aircrete bricks are a DIY alternative to hebel brick, made using a precise foamy mixture of air bubbles and cement. Cath and Liz can achieve about 200 bricks from a day’s Aircrete pour, and this build requires 4500 of them! They started making Aircrete bricks in January and things are really starting to take shape as the domes rise from the ground. Cath Wild explained, “What makes Aircrete domebuilding so exciting and unique is it is excellent sound and thermal insulation properties, as well as it being water resistant, fireproof, cyclone proof, super low cost and very DIY friendly!”
Cath and Liz Wild
The Wilds were first introduced to the magic of Aircrete domes through the information on the Domegaia website and the beautiful dome home builds of Steve Areen. They then attended an introductory build course with Syntropic Life in Canungra… and the rest is history!
The Aircrete dome house is progressing well in Flaxton
The Wilds hope their building permit approval can be a precedent to help other domies to achieve their dream homes too. You can follow their progress on Aircrete Dome Elysian Falls facebook page.
“The amazing team at Syntropic Life have connected us with other Aircrete ‘domies’ offering help pouring bricks, making formwork, stacking bricks… and even cooking us dinner at the end of a hard day’s work” Liz Wild noted. “The best part about this build has been connecting to the amazing domie community.” This is the first Aircrete dome structure to have Council build approval not just in Australia, but the world!

Dealing with Crime in Schools By Doug Patterson
T
he recent case of a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl being brutally assaulted and described as ‘bullying’ highlights a problem that has existed in our high schools for years. Calls for the offenders to be expelled only exacerbate the acceptance of a culture that allows teenage criminals to escape legal consequences for their actions. It also, by default, presents school principals the power to be both judge and jury over offenders that should be answerable to the courts. “Whoa – what’s he on about?” you are thinking. Well, when assault is treated as a social misdemeanor like bullying, surely the problem is evident. Bullying can reasonably be handled in house, but where physical or psychological damage are a result, then a crime has been committed and needs to be judged in the criminal system. However, I suspect that most people would be shocked at the crimes that are regularly committed in high schools and are handled in house – completely outside the proper legal system. With over 20 years of
experience teaching in high schools, I can clearly recall decisions that disturbed me – some undoubtedly minor but others potentially quite serious. Let me share some of them. - A student always rides his bike to school without wearing a helmet. No big deal but by accepting his behaviour you are teaching that road rules don’t really apply to him. - A senior student was caught selling cigarettes to a junior student. Again, not a big deal perhaps but he is breaking the law and a three-day suspension doesn’t address this. - Another student caught selling marijuana actually just got a five-day suspension. Really! - A 17-year-old boy caught having sex with a 15-yeargirl on gym mats received a warning and counselling despite potential issues of rape and underage sex not been legally investigated. - A student patrolling the school perimeter with a rifle threatening to shoot a teacher who had disciplined
him received counselling. - A senior student came to class late with severe bruising on her face. As her teacher, I was legally required to report the fact that she might have suffered from physical domestic abuse. I was told the school was aware of the problem and had dealt with it. I found this particularly disturbing as it became obvious that the school, although obliged to report this to the police, had in fact dealt with it in house. The problem with treating school crime as a minor misdemeanor has two direct consequences. School principals, by default, assume power and authority to arbitrate over crimes that they really don’t have the authority to do and are not trained to exercise. However, more tragically, young teens are taught that breaking the law is not such a big deal. It is no wonder that so many young adults are caught breaking traffic rules, drug laws and assault. This is what we have taught them. Crime is crime and must be treated as that, wherever it is committed.
