It’s been an emotional week. My youngest has just ‘graduated’ junior school. Although I find the concept a little odd, having grown up in an era where you just moved on to high school with no fanfare, there is something quite lovely about celebrating this next step on the ladder of life.
What makes it more poignant is my eldest also went to this gorgeous hinterland school, and so, by default, I have been involved in different areas (from teaching after-school drama to tuckshop to Daily Rapid Reading) for ten years.
All around me I have seen generous and kind people involved on a volunteer basis, offering time, donations, skills and materials, and I would like to say a big THANK YOU to anyone who takes the time to help at our schools – I saw first-hand how much it benefits the students (and helps the teachers).
Watching the ‘clap out’ I had a few tears spilling over as I realised that this chapter of our lives is ending. High school means less involvement and, before you know it, they are teenagers!
Then comes the Planet of the Vapes (why has the government let it come to this?), mobile phones in schools (WHEN will we follow the Northern Territory, Victoria, Western Australia, and South Australia’s example?), the alarming accessibility of … oh, I won’t go on, but I’m sure you know where I was heading.
It’s like a freight train hurtling forward, we’re being bombarded with everything and it’s too fast, so I’m especially grateful for the Christmas holidays this year! It’s time to connect with family, slow down and enjoy simple things like a good meal, a swim, a game of cards together.
As always, I think of those who find Christmas a tough time, as well as those who love it, and I hope you all find some form of joy and comfort as the year draws to a close.
I think most of us need some time to slow down and recharge. In fact, put your feet up and read the December HT - it’s full of people who are inspiring others, nurturing others, and finding ways to make this a better place to live. The kind of people who embody the ‘Christmas Spirit’ all year round.
So, enjoy your people, your animals, your town, your planet and your Self this December, and I’ll leave you with the wise words of Ferris Bueller: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

The Maleny Wood Expo returns, along with the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize.
arung Landcare is proud to host the return of the Maleny Wood Expo to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in 2023! The Maleny Wood Expo, held over the May long weekend, has been a feature of the region since 1996.
Bringing together some of Australia's finest woodworkers and timber artisans, the Wood Expo offers an exciting three-day program of entertainment, workshops, displays and talks for all generations to enjoy.
Sponsored by Sunshine Coast Council, the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize is the feature exhibition at the Maleny Wood Expo.
Showcasing beautiful and sustainably crafted pieces from all over Australia, woodworkers and crafts people are once again invited to submit applications to next year’s competition.
With a first prize of $10,000, the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize is not only a great opportunity to feature your work, but can lead to further opportunities.
Winner from 2019, William Bayliss, was just 19 years old when he took home the Wootha Prize. His journey as a craftsman had only started in July of 2015. When the competition was brought to his attention, he jumped at the opportunity.
“I am an avid collector of audio equipment and needed a cabinet to house my HI-FI equipment and speaker cabinets to match, this was the perfect scenario.”
His winning entry ‘Torrent HI-FI’, was an exquisite piece of craftsmanship combining solid and re-sawn veneer Tasmanian Blackwood, along with Huon Pine.
“Winning the Wootha at such a young age was a great milestone that led to many opportunities such as receiving a scholarship to study at the

t’s uplifting paying a visit to The Dance Academy in Maleny, as everyone looks happy to be there. This flourishing school for dancers from 2 to 82 (and beyond), is clearly inspiring all who walk, jeté or tap through the doors.
Such is the teaching quality at this academy, that the dancers recently competed at the Get The Beat National Finals, an Australia-wide dance competition.
“Our dancers were competing with dance teams from all over Australia and did very well, placing in all of their routines,” shared Dawn. “We are so proud of them and wanted to share their achievements with our local community.”
The Dance Academy came about as a way for Dawn to share her love and passion for dance with future generations, to nurture them to be all that they wish to be.
“I have loved dancing for as long as I can remember. As a shy child it was a way for me to express myself without having to use words, it has shaped the person I am today and helped me to lose my insecurities and believe in myself.”
Dawn grew up in Cairns, and at 15 was awarded a scholarship to dance at a school in Sydney.
“One of my biggest memories of my training is constantly being yelled at and being so scared to make a mistake or disappoint my teachers. Due to unsafe dance practice, I ended up with an injury and had to give away my dream.
“I was devastated, just hearing classical music would reduce me to tears. I tried a number of other jobs, I worked as a travel agent, went to uni, worked for the government, but nothing could fill the gaping hole that followed me everywhere.
“After completing my RAD Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies and teaching for a couple of schools in Brisbane, I was determined to start my own school and develop a culture which would nurture both excellence in technique and artistry with an understanding of what makes a beautiful human.”
Dawn and her husband, Marvin, used to come up to Maleny regularly on weekends, and Dawn’s dancing mentor told her the bDifferent dance school was for sale.
“I said to my husband, 'you know our idea of

eventually retiring to Maleny? Well, let’s do it now, only not actually retire!’ and he agreed,” said Dawn.
“It was the perfect opportunity to make my dream a reality in a beautiful town we had fallen in love with.”
The Dance Academy will have been running for six years in 2023 and offers a wide variety of classes with a group of trained professionals. “I’m so lucky to have such a wonderful team, with Fiona, Andy, Morgan, Anna, Kylie and Danielle,” Dawn said.
Such is its popularity that The Dance Academy has expanded to Mapleton and Landsborough, and Dawn now spends four days in Maleny, one in Landsborough and one in Mapleton.
“We currently have a number of students who have expressed an interest in dancing professionally or teaching dance, and we also had a student start training full time this year to become a professional ballerina,” Dawn added with a big smile.
Dawn’s family love to see everything she has achieved so far. “I asked my mum and she said, ‘You strive to be better and better just like you did with your dancing. I am so proud of you and love showing what you do to all my friends and family’."
Dawn’s mum and her husband come from Cairns every year to help out and watch the school’s annual show.
“My sister also comes from Cairns some years when she can with her work schedule, and my granny came from Adelaide until she was 90 years old, but the travel is a bit too much for her these days.
“I am very lucky to come from such a supportive family who have always encouraged me to follow my dreams and have been there every step along
“We had butcher's paper with questions like “Why Do You Dance?” hanging around our studios earlier this year. Every dance in this year's show was inspired by an answer from one of our dancers.
“Each dance was titled with the quote that it was inspired by, and the choreography created to represent our dancer's words. The parents loved how personal and meaningful it was.
“I always said that when I finished dancing professionally, I’d be a teacher,” said Dawn. “I didn’t have the opportunity to fulfil the first part of my dream, but now I’m doing something that lights me up and brings joy, so I feel very grateful.”
During Covid, Dawn found a way to keep the ‘dance family’ connected. “We took all of our classes online. It was a tough time, as it was for everyone, but it was great to still be able to connect with everyone through Zoom. Many of the parents and dancers expressed their gratitude for keeping some normality in their lives.”
The students clearly love coming to classes, and a shelf crammed full of Eisteddfod trophies is a testament to their talent and dedication, and their annual show is the highlight of the year.

Connecting the Community
It has been frequently said that the Covid-19 lockdowns have helped to bring people and communities together and on Sunday afternoons in Maleny, Oneness Maleny – a spiritual support network – is quietly bearing testament to this.
by JUDY FREDRIKSEN
s I arrive at the Hinterland Business Centre on an overcast Sunday afternoon, any dreariness is instantly dispelled by the warm and friendly welcome from Deborah Lovegrove and Janet Kent, the guest speaker coordinators. I’m promptly offered a cuppa and biscuit, while the crowd is small, but friendly and enthusiastic.
Operating since 2017, the group aims to create an atmosphere of support, community, unity and diversity by hosting a variety of guest speakers each week, explains Deborah. It is a community group run by a team of volunteers from all walks of life, bringing together like-minded people in a spirit of friendship.
“The guest speakers could be astrologists or homeopaths. We have a woman who is very involved and knowledgeable about herbs and the immune system; there is a medium and a person who gives us a lot of sound healing,” Deborah says.
It seems there is something for everyone, with the discussions extending to things like gardening, edible weeds, organic farming, past lives, self-healing techniques, meditation, extraterrestrial visitations, Qi Gong, yarning circles with Aboriginal Elders, compassionate communication
techniques and conflict resolution.
“We aim to get inspirational speakers, people who are uplifting and supporting. We are always looking for people who are passionate about what they do and have something to contribute to the local community.”
Today’s guest speakers are Montville artists, Jim Cox and Pam Maegdefrau, who are sharing their wonderful work using art as an educational tool to raise awareness about environmental issues facing us today.
The couple has travelled extensively around the world and though Pam is more well known for her ceramics and pottery, she has a background in science, which lends credibility to her knowledge of the environment.

Jim begins the presentation by explaining how his concern for native Australian wildlife began when he was only five years old, living in Melbourne. And without revealing his age, he confirms that was a very long time ago, which means he knows a thing or two about the subject!
As an observant child, he noticed, “there were no native birds or animals in his suburb, not even any frogs. But there were seven species of introduced birds”.
His interest in preserving Australian native animals has never wavered throughout his long life and out of concern for his grandchildren and great grandchildren, a book called SOS – Save our Species was conceived.
Written by local author and keen environmentalist, Elaine Green, and beautifully illustrated with Jim’s unique style of colourful artwork, the book effectively communicates the issues facing our wildlife using a favourite medium that transcends all generations –humour.
In scenes reminiscent of Monty Pythonesque bluster, the animals rise up, protesting their treatment by humans. In an excerpt from the platypuses (yes, dear readers, that is an acceptable plural of ‘platypus’ according the Macquarie Dictionary, fourth edition, 2005):
“The militant monotremes make a move.
“People are really strange,” they say. “They spend a lot of time arguing about the plural of platypus while we are becoming a threatened species … we are joining forces with our fellow monotremes, the echidnas, who
are also doing it tough ... being put on a coin doesn’t really seem to help protect us …”
Hmmm … no it doesn’t, point taken! Yes, we humans are a strange lot. I think it’s definitely time to rethink our priorities.
Therein lies the point of Oneness Maleny – it aims to help people realign their priorities and not only concentrate on what is important, but also explore new concepts and ideas.
It is guest speakers like this who share their expertise and bring fresh ways of thinking to Oneness Maleny.
“I think if you have places like Oneness Maleny it’s much easier to do because you’re supported by likeminded people, and other people who are progressing in their field, and you get to learn a lot from being here,” explains Janet. “The focus is on caring and fun.”
If you are curious to find out more about Oneness Maleny, everyone is welcome. They meet every Sunday afternoon in the Hinterland Business Centre, 38A Coral Street at. Meeting times are 3.30–5.30pm, no booking required.
Their first meeting for the new year is on Sunday February 5, 2023. Cost: $5 donation to cover the cost of hall hire. For more details, see: onenessmaleny.org
Suggestion: Jim Cox’s and Elaine Green’s book would make an interesting Christmas gift, especially for children, and is currently available from Jim direct: cox_maegdefrau@hotmail.com

he tiny joey was about to be obliterated. She was 30 cms tall and was standing outside the only home she had ever known – mum’s pouch. I stopped the car suddenly on a dangerous road shoulder, mindful of the never-ending 50 metre long cattle trains thundering by at 110 kms per hour.
Fiona took a towel and walked carefully towards the distressed baby kangaroo, now trying to get back into the pouch. Mum was obviously dead and Fiona threw the towel over Joey, bundled her up and carried her back to the car. She was shivering and bleeding.
We had seen the uplifting TV series Kangaroo Dundee years ago and knew that a surrogate pouch was called for. We were going on a camping trip to the Currawinya NP and so Joey was soon snugly curled up in a pillow-case, held tightly in Fiona’s lap.
She was calm on the 90-minute drive to Charleville, probably in shock as her extremities were very cold. We went directly to the renowned ‘Bilby Experience’, hoping that someone there would know of a wildlife carer. They did.
Shannon was a “Runner”, who volunteered her time to fetch distressed and injured native animals and take them to Margella. Everyone knew Margella. Shannon soon arrived at our campsite in Charleville and took Joey from us to deliver her to Margella.
Later that day, we received a text from Shannon saying that Joey, now called Shani, had passed a vet checkup (a wound on her thigh was made by crows trying to eat her alive!) and was safely ensconced at
Margella’s.
That evening, we received a call from Margella, and a photo of Shani, now in her own pillow-case/pouch. Shani had been bathed, had her wound dressed, fed and was in good spirits. For us at that moment, there was no better feeling.
The next day, we went to visit Margella on her large property on the outskirts of Charleville. Shani was now part of a large family of kangaroos, wallabies and possums, all

injured in some way, but now blissfully content in an obviously loving, caring and safe environment.
There was also a rooster. And six geese. And a goat. And more. Margella’s dream is to one day meet Chris Barns, the real Kangaroo Dundee and founder of the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs. But who would care for her animals if she left?
On the Warrego Highway, it’s 90kms from Miles to Morven. Dead kangaroos were strewn every 200 metres or so. Possibly 500 kills every couple of days on this stretch of highway alone. That’s a conservative estimate of 1,500 each week or 6,000 each month.
Often travellers on this road will see the mother and then a baby “Shani” 10 metres away, all victims of motor vehicles, mainly trucks. Many die lingering, excruciatingly painful deaths. Heading north from Morven on the Landsborough Highway it gets worse.

A cardboard box, an old towel or blanket, sturdy gloves and a pillowcase in the car is also advisable. NB don’t try to pick up bats or flying foxes – call bat rescue instead.
We know Shani will grow into a big healthy kangaroo who will have her own babies in due time. We can sleep easily with that knowledge. The far more common alternative does not bear thinking about. Wildlife Carers deserve our gratitude.
“About 20 years ago, I had a couple of boys staying and one went out back and said, ‘There are squirrels in the backyard’, I said ‘there are no squirrels here’ and went to check, it was a possum and the mum was dead, so I shoved the baby possum up my jumper to keep warm and

DYING WITHOUT A WILL WHAT HAPPENS?
In the last two issues of Hinterland Times I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”.
Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended beneficiaries. One example of an unintended beneficiary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death.
The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of intestacy. Here are some examples:

If you are married/de facto with two or more children your spouse takes the first $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children. In situations where you do not have any close relatives the rules provide that your estate must go to relatives that are further removed from you.
Another problem with dying intestate is the need for court approval for the appointment of someone to administer your estate. In a will you would appoint an executor of your choice. However with an intestacy, your loved ones would have to apply to the Supreme Court for an administrator to be appointed. In the absence of a suitable person the Supreme Court may appoint the Public Trustee.

Bridget Rook has big plans for The Old Post Office in Peachester, and we can’t wait to see them unfold.
“My children are in Brisbane and I used to come up here for drives, which is when I found Peachester, Maleny and all the beautiful areas across the hinterland,” said Bridget.
“I saw the post office building was for sale, but I went away for a year doing other things, and when I came back it was still for sale.
“It was derelict and looked like it had only had two coats of paint since the 1800s. So, I bought it, repainted and had the floors sanded and waxed. Before that though, I made the decision to have the asbestos removed, which was a huge and costly undertaking, and then Covid stalled everything.
“I’ve been here for four years, and I still have so much to do, but I love this building, and I want to create an arts hub for creatives, and invite people to hold exhibitions, workshops and events."
The building is small and packed with character, perched at the end of the main street near the Peachester general store.
“Apparently, this building was brought up the Range by bullock,” shared Bridget. “It was a collection postal service, a receiving office. A local Peachester family from the sawmill visited and filled me in on some of the history of the building.
“The older gentleman worked here as a junior for the one-legged post master when he was an eight-year-old lad. He found the postal bag too heavy, so the milkman used to have to carry the postal sack to the cart for him.”
Peachester was named by Surveyor William Embury Hill in 1888, and the name refers to a peach tree which was growing at the crossing of the Stanley River.
In November 1939 Mr Inigo Jones read an historical account by Mr. W. P. H. Harden, at a meeting of the Historical Society of Queensland. According to Mr Harden, “This remarkable district in its early days was covered with impenetrable forests, where one walked through timber tracks between forest giants rising 200 and 300 feet and creating a perpetual twilight.
“Clearing and erosion have in most of the area devastated the fauna and flora very considerably, but in the northern and western limits there still is an abundance of marsupials and koalas and the district has now been proclaimed a sanctuary.”

Bridget is passionate about nature and supporting the ecosystem. “It sounds silly, but I think one of the main reasons I bought this post office is because there is a Richmond Birdwing Sanctuary nearby.
“I decided I would like to grow vines to encourage them in the area. That was a year of extreme drought and bushfires so very few trees or vines survived. This experience gave me an understanding of what the farmers go through whilst now, I’m still slowly planting out the acre.”
Bridget showed me around the space, including a welcoming kitchen and living quarters, which were added later but built sympathetically to suit the original architecture.
“The place has so much potential,” Bridget said, “and I’m holding the first ‘Pop-Up Space Ceramic Exhibition' on the weekend of the 10th and 11th December from 7am till about 2pm. The early start is because people often arrive here for breakfast and coffee at the café a few doors down, so I’ll be up with the birds as well!”
Bridget completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Jewellery and Metalsmithing, before travelling extensively in Europe, and becoming an art teacher.
“I love sculpting and have fond memories of creating works in the South of France, which I had cast there. I love metalwork, including hammer-forming spoons.
“I also had the opportunity to do some Raku firing in Vallauris, France, where there is a famous Picasso ceramic studio, so I was very excited that I could practise this technique here in the hinterland.”
Five years ago Bridget drove up to Maleny, camped at the Showgrounds, and found the Maleny Arts and Crafts Group (MACG). “I was so happy to stumble across such a creative outlet,” she said.
“Since becoming involved with MACG I’ve been creating ceramic jewellery. Frida Kahlo is an inspiration to me, she wore incredible ceramic necklaces, and some of my large ceramic beads pay homage to her style."
Picking up a delicate ceramic bowl Bridget added, “I also attended a masterclass by ceramicist Larissa Warren learning a Japanese technique for colouring porcelain, called ‘Nerikomi’.
Members of MACG will be displaying their ceramic work at the Pop-Up exhibition. “Colleen Atkins has these fantastic hares, which I am already enjoying having in the space!” said Bridget with a smile.
Bilha Smith is another local, multi-disciplinary artist who has exhibited extensively and will be featured in the exhibition.
The plan is to apply for small grants to help with the cost of materials, so that Bridget and other artists can run workshops. “Clay is popular and I’d love to do more metal casting.”
Bridget hopes this small boutique-style exhibition will spark enthusiasm for future collaborations, and in early 2023 it already looks likely she will have a small sculpture and jewellery showcase happening.
“Other workshop ideas include screen-printing, where people learn the process to create a stencil then screen your design onto a T-shirt.” said Bridget.
“There will also be silversmithing, where you can make a silver ring for yourself or to gift, and Clay Play, where you make a pinch pot for trinkets or a mini plant which you can leave to be fired and glazed.
“At this stage, all profits will go towards improved workshop facilities,” added Bridget, “and other dreamy ideas on the horizon!”

len and Amy are the perfect example of keeping it local and doing it from scratch. They met three years ago and currently live in Maleny, while they are building on a plot of land in Witta.
“We have a little half acre,” said Glen. “Amy is really keen on permaculture, and we’re putting the gardens in first, while we’re waiting on builders.”
“We’re going for a Danish summerhouse style house, like a barn,” added Amy. “We wanted to build in hemp, but we were priced out, so now we are just building as sustainably as we can.”
Amy’s hails from Belthorpe, but spent some time travelling and living overseas, like many young Australians do! “When I was about 24, I had a oneway ticket, it was a deal where you have so many countries on your ticket. I lived with family in the UK, in Ferndown near Bournemouth and on the edge of the New Forest.”
Glen is from New Zealand, “The bottom of South Island, and I moved to the hinterland a few years back, which reminds me of home, as it’s very green. This is the first place in Australia where it feels like home.”
Glen spent time working in the US before coming here, initially working on cruise ships, and then staying with friends for three months at a time.
“I saw this company in the States making peanut butter with wacky flavours, Oreos, marshmallows … and thought ‘that’s a cool concept’, so the idea stuck with me,” Glen said.
“We’re keeping it simple at the moment,” continued Amy. “We thought it best to start small and then incorporate and blend other flavours as time goes on. We currently make salted peanut butter, and next we plan to do unsalted.
“We’re making small batches for now for the Maple Street Co-op and The Barn in Flaxton. Both places have been super supportive of us.”
“We make fresh batches for them, and they last for about three months,” said Glen. “It takes a few hours to make batches for those two businesses and we work out of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, or the Community Centre, as they have commercial kitchens.
“Amy is an artist/illustrator, and hand-drew the designs for the label.”
Life is busy for this family, with a baby daughter, dog and cat to look after, along with work, building a house and making their peanut butter business grow.
“It’s a lot to do at the moment,” admitted Amy. “But we love it, and we are keen to keep everything as local as possible – even our jars are Australian!
“You would think a lot of the Australian brands you see have Australian peanuts, but they are often from Argentina. Argentinian peanuts are way cheaper, but we use Kingaroy peanuts, and no preservatives, just peanuts and salt.”
“We’re looking forward to experimenting and adding more flavours as time goes on,” said Glen, “but for now, this is just right for us. We would like to say a big thank you to Fi and the Maple Street Co-op, and Ange and The Barn in Flaxton for all their encouragement and support.”

HINTERLAND MARKETS -
SATURDAY OF THE MONTH
Hinterland Market Trail
Along with our regular market editorials in the HT, and on our socials, we also like to support the Hinterland Market Trail (HMT), which was established in February 2021 when members from markets across, and down, the Range had a meeting to see how best to work together.
THE MONTH
Hall. Stall holder enquires: Liz 0424 042 376
OF THE
Hinterland Market Trail spokesperson, Debbie Ives, explained, “We wanted to start a conversation to share knowledge, experiences and ideas to enhance and further promote the wonderful markets on offer across Glasshouse Country and the hinterland.”
It was very quickly established that the purpose of the group was not just to promote the markets under the umbrella of a Hinterland Market Trail, but it was also an opportunity to share ideas, resources, and challenges associated with volunteers running a community market.
Close to two years on, market coordinators from Beerburrum, Beerwah, Maleny, Montville, Mooloolah and Mapleton continue to connect and explore ways to unite and support each other in their volunteer roles.
At the beginning of 2022 the group was successful in gaining funding through the Sunshine Coast Council’s economic development grants program for a specific marketing push for the trail.
“The funding enabled members of the trail to work with local marketing duo Lachie and Fynn from Marco Marketing to advance their current social media strategy,” Debbie shared.
Director of Marco, Lachie Finch said “ I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the team at the Hinterland Market Trail to highlight the amazing people, businesses and communities of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland markets.
“I would recommend the Hinterland Market Trail to both visitors and locals, and encourage people to make a day out of their visit, as the markets are surrounded by other incredible natural landmarks and locations worth visiting.”
The group continues to meet every second month and is committed to work together, tackle any arising challenges, and stand united in offering the best possible market for their own local community.
For other markets within the hinterland interested in joining the trail please head to the Hinterland Market Trail Facebook page for further details. The group’s next meeting is taking place on Jan 19, held at the Beerwah CWA Hall. Please RSVP or make contact by emailing qcwabeerwah@gmail.com

FOOD AND FUN!
AND
What made you move to the hinterland? Or, if you grew up in the area, what makes you stay?
Lember and Williams has been assisting clients in Maleny for a long time, with our former Principal Carolyn Williams having lived in the Maleny area for more than 20 years. Before becoming Principal of Lember and Williams, I worked closely with Carolyn as a solicitor in the firm and have come to know and appreciate the unique character of the Maleny community.
What did you do before joining Lember and Williams?
I worked as a solicitor in several firms in Chermside, Maryborough and Bundaberg, focusing mainly on Wills and Estates, property and conveyancing, commercial and business matters, family law, and criminal law.
What does a 'typical' day entail for you?
As a mum to four children, every morning starts with school drop off, before coming into the office. Each day I see many clients and assist them to find solutions for their particular legal problem. I am supported by a fantastic team of lawyers, conveyancers, paralegals and administration staff, as well as Carolyn who remains as a consultant to the firm. After work I spend time with my children and enjoy watching the latest episodes of The Crown or Yellowstone!
What do you enjoy the most about your business?
A Q A
For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a lawyer, so I feel blessed to be able to do what I love, and that I can share that passion with my clients.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I have been involved with coaching netball for many years, and really enjoy seeing children achieve something that they initially thought impossible. It is really uplifting to see them experience a sense of achievement, and encourage them to set even more goals in life to achieve.
I also enjoy camping with my children and my dogs. We have a chocolate Labrador who loves cuddles and a kelpie who is very active.
(07) 5451 3600 info@suncoastcc.qld.edu.au
Q A Q A
If you had to share any advice connected to your business, what would it be?
If in doubt, come and see me. Often, people find themselves in a tangle when they attempt to resolve a complex issue by obtaining advice from family or friends. Get the right advice from the outset from a professional, such as myself.
Do you have a favourite quote which inspires you?
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” — Winston S. Churchill

ARTIST
PROFILE – Janna Pameijer
The HT has had a long relationship with Arts Connect Inc, regularly sharing artist profiles with our readers in the Creative Cuts section. So, this month, I am happy to share the profile of artist Janna Pameijer, whose Surrender sculpture in bronze was one of the stand-out pieces for me at the recent Sculpture on the Edge exhibition, held at Flaxton Gardens.
Janna’s artist statement simply read: 'Surrender' gives all till almost the last breath. As heart points towards the sky, it is the last to surrender.
Janna has been a sculptor since completing a Degree in Fine Art working in clay and bronze in 1978. Since then, she has been fully involved with creating sculptures from Curramore studio and is a sought-after mentor and teacher throughout Eastern Australia. Janna has taken part in numerous group exhibitions with fellow artists and sculptors over the last 44 years.
Janna’s subject matter and styles varied throughout the years, with figure studies featuring heavily during parenting years, especially those of children, including portraiture.
In 1981 Janna co-founded the Queensland Wildlife Society to promote the awareness of Australian wildlife. She later managed and tutored substantial community art projects in Maleny and Charters Towers, before helping develop Sculpture on the Edge with the Arts Connect Inc committee.
Janna has recently been mentoring artist Laura Vecmane, who had a number of pieces on display at the Sculpture on the Edge exhibition, including the striking 'Gaia', which Laura says is a homage to the First People of Australia.

SCULPTURE ON THE EDGE REVIEW
By VICTORIA MCGUIN
The recent Sculpture on the Edge exhibition, hosted by Arts Connect Inc, was a feast for the eyes and emotions. I spent a long time weaving through the artworks and enjoying the connection with certain pieces - that feeling of almost being pulled towards a sculpture.
I have selected a few of the HT team’s favourite pieces to share with those who couldn’t make it, to shows the diversity of art on display.
The team at Flaxton Gardens are to be commended for being excellent hosts, and giving the event such a spectacular setting. My family and I spent the last few years heading to Spicers for this exhibition, where we loved strolling through the grounds and often ‘finding’ sculptures nestled in nature.
I must admit, I felt a little sad when it was announced they would be moving the exhibition, but Flaxton Gardens went above and beyond with their presentation of the sculptures, both inside and outside, and there was still an element of discovery as you walked through.
Congratulations to all involved and we look forward to Sculpture on the Edge 2023!

Volunteers needed!
Toss it? No way! After seeing your recent article on the FIXIT Café in Maleny (November 2022) we wanted to share our Caloundra Repair Café,where the philosophy is to fix it, not dump it!
The Caloundra Repair Café offers our community a local hub to fix, mend and connect, helping people keep items rather than having to throw them away. Regular meetings enable people to bring in broken household goods (such as furniture, appliances, clothing, jewellery, everyday items like umbrellas and toys) and learn how to fix them.
We meet monthly, on the last Saturday of the month at the Caloundra Community Centre, from 9am-12.30pm.
Do you have a skill (or two) which you’d like to use and share with others, to fix or mend broken items? We’re in need of people with such skills as basic carpentry, sewing (machine & hand), jewellery and bikes.
Come and join our merry band. For more info please see our FB page or contact Cliff/Dorothy on 0450 062 543.

Reminiscing on a life change
The 15th of November marks 20 years of moving to Flaxton and opening Bodytime Personal Training Studio in Montville. Time goes by so quickly, but through everything we endure as individuals and business owners I've remained as the longest personal trainer on the Range and just about anywhere. From the Redlands and Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Toowoomba, I've spent my life and career over the past 40 years within the health industry.
It all happened so quickly...I was spending the weekend of Father’s Day with my two boys, feeling like a 'life change', visited the Montville Village, spoke with business owners and before you know it, rented a shop at 130 Main Street and bought a home in Ensbey Road, Flaxton, and the rest is history.
Through advertising in the Hinterland Times my Personal Training Business grew quickly and within two years I had to move to a larger premises in Maleny, servicing 20
Appointments a day, seven days a week, and with a regular Editorial Spot on 'Fitness, Health and Wellness Tips' in the Hinterland Times.
It's easier to say 'who I haven't helped' along the years and achieving personal goals. I've been so involved within the community, from assisting individuals, groups, businesses and schools, evolving and developing my brand to where it is today within Bodytime Strength, Fitness and Injury Management, now working out of Maleny Gym.
I'd like to thank the community for all their support and friendships along the way, many of which have been with me from the start, and I now call my friends and I intend to continue my services till I retire...one day.

Becoming Buddies
Hello HT Team
Many HT readers would be aware of Hinterland and Coast residents who have stepped forward to support refugees. One group, “Buddies,” recently held an event to honour 20 years of incredible sharing, experiences, growing, and in multiple ways making differences in the lives of both refugees and ourselves.
I share the birthing of Buddies with HT readers because it represents “The Power of One.”
In 2002, at the Sunshine Coast University’s first Multicultural Day, I met Maree, from Brisbane’s Refugee Claimant Support Centre. She asked: Did I know X about Australia’s Refugee policy? No. Did I know Y, Z, etc about our policy? No. Shocked. But what could “little me” do? Inform others.
I placed an ad in the Buderim Chronicle: “Come learn the myths and facts about Australia’s refugee policy,” resulting in 17 conscious, compassionate people sitting in a circle under my backyard fig tree, hearing Maree share.
From this one tiny act, monthly meetings, numbers, participation, inspirations, suggestions, friendships, and enthusiasm rapidly grew—such that at the meetings there’d be 40+ people crammed on the chairs and floor of my family room. ... And then came the meeting where,
realising we needed a title, we tossed around ideas--until one man asked, “Couldn’t it be less formal? Something like BUDDIES?”
Buddies has accomplished 20 years of incredible, invaluable, uplifting, heart-melting connections and actions. If any readers are keen to know more, please visit refugeebuddies.org. A big thanks to everyone who supports us!

Taking action for change
Dear Editor
After nine years of Federal Liberal National government inaction and no proper energy plan, the climate wars are ending with the Albanese government setting about methodically introducing measures to tackle the energy crisis and climate change.
Previously, State governments have been taking up the slack, and now the Palaszczuk Labor government has introduced a landmark energy plan to lead the way to a cleaner, affordable, and sustainable energy future for Queensland.
As part of a $62 billion Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, the government has set a 70% renewables target by 2032. Initiatives include two new pumped hydro projects; planning to build a new Queensland SuperGrid to connect renewable energy projects across the state, and convert all publicly owned coal-fired power stations to clean energy hubs by 2035 with a Job Security Guarantee for the workers involved.
Regional communities will benefit from an anticipated investment target of 95% of clean energy infrastructure. The whole state will benefit from the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan.
The Queensland Labor government governs for the whole state with visionary plans to provide cheaper, cleaner energy supply for families, businesses, and the economy. A better future for us all.
Sunny regards, Robyn Deane

THE OLD SHED
The old shed stood leaning for all to see Courtesy of a large umbrella tree It housed the mandatory concrete tubs Where mum would hand wash and daily scrub
But the shed's purpose that I remember best Was not the space for a car to rest Or the shelter it provided on a hot or rainy day But to listen closely to what my father's friends had to say
His friends would squat with knees up high Roll a cigarette one handed with a sigh No need for nourishment for them to feed on Just a piece of paspalum to eagerly chew on
A fire was lit in an old tin drum Providing more warmth than a bottle of rum But all the warmth did not come from the flames so trim But from the occupants thoughts burning within
A small room stored more than my father's tools Security ensured his privacy rules A window at the side provided some insight But an occasional unlocked door ensured a child's delight
The corrugated tin roof played a harmonious tune As I absorbed these moments that passed too soon Like a favourite blanket they caressed my childhood I was so privileged to have lived in this neighbourhood

Past creates a future gift
At Landsborough Museum, you’ll find a watch chain made entirely from plaited human hair and an inkwell made from the dismembered foot of a favourite pony.
The watch, reportedly made from the hair of Mary Stokes, born in England in 1876, was donated to the museum in 1970 by her granddaughter who lived in Landsborough. The inkwell belonged to Mrs McBride, mother of Tom McBride, a Landsborough Shire Councillor from 1915 – 1917.
From exploring their significance, to uncovering the mystery behind a memorial plaque on the roadside near Bankfoot House, the Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Levy is helping us piece together our past, so we can preserve it for the future.
The Levy, which is charged to every rateable property, delivers a range of projects under the five outcome areas of Knowledge, Conservation, Support, Communication, and Advocacy. It helps to document, research, conserve, protect, promote and provide access to the stories, history and values of the people, communities and culture of the Sunshine Coast. Foster or Forever?
Since May 2005, nonprofit 4 Paws Animal Rescue Inc has provided refuge and a "New Home, New Life" to homeless dogs and cats on the Sunshine Coast and beyond.
Animals come from Council pounds, are surrendered due to owner lifestyle changes, or have been rescued from cruel living conditions. They are cared for short-term by foster carers until rehomed by a Forever Family. If you can foster a cat or dog, the life of that animal immediately improves.
All 4 Paws animals are vet checked, microchipped, wormed, flea treated, de-sexed and Council registered prior to being available for adoption.
This month 4 Paws is hoping to find affectionate, beautiful, Lilly a home. She is playful, good natured and adores cuddles. Reluctantly surrendered by her previous owner, five-year-old tabby, Lilly, would make a fantastic companion cat, and is ideally suited to a home with either adults only or potentially a family with older children.
If you feel that you could adopt or foster this beautiful tabby, then please visit 4 Paws Animal Rescue website: 4pawsanimalrescue.org.au
Delve into your family history
The Caloundra Family History Research Inc. group (CFHRI) recently held a successful Introduction to Family History Research for Seniors course in their rooms at The Sunshine Coast Turf Club.
Participants were shown practical research methods and techniques using the amazing array of print and digital resources (including subscription sites) available at the CFHRI Library. The course had plenty of discussions, questions, tips, laughter and learning.
And it's not too late to share the rewards of family history research. If you have a hard-to-buy-for loved one who you think would enjoy taking this journey, and also enjoy the occasional drive to Caloundra, a one-year membership with CFHRI would make a unique and practical gift this Christmas.
Check their website for family history research courses to be run in 2023, caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au. (Pictured: CFHR training attendees with CFHRI Librarian Kate Bowman.)
Moving on
After 38 years, the Sunshine Coast Arts and Crafts group have moved from their Main Street premises to another building a few doors down! The group held a celebratory grand opening, complete with an impressively large cake and the space was full of fantastic artworks, crafts and gifts – all locally made and beautifully displayed.
The members are thrilled with the move, including a couple of founding members from when the group was established in 1983 in what was then 'The Dome' a little further down the road.
Members Deidre and Eric Ashby said, “We are doing what we’ve always wanted to do as part of this group, and it’s great to be with so many like-minded people.”
There is something for everyone from woodwork, scarves and jewellery to aprons, paintings and model kits – and of course, plenty of Christmas decorations! You can check out the Sunshine Coast Arts and Crafts Group’s bright and airy new space at 144 Main Street, Montville, open Wednesday to Monday 10am – 4pm, Tuesday 9.30am – 4.30pm.
Donating a cow!
Maleny Dairies have been busy of late. Not only have they brought out their new lactose-free milk, but they also won the award for Sunshine Coast large Business of the Year for the Food and Agribusiness category.
Not content with resting on their laurels, they have now come to the rescue of Maleny State High School who reached out to Sally Hopper recently.
The school’s newest calf had been unable to receive adequate milk supply from its mother, and help was desperately needed. Maleny Dairies gifted ‘Doris’ to Maleny State High School so that the calf can still receive sufficient milk while remaining at the school with its mother.
Sally Hopper shared that “Maleny Dairies is proud to support the local high school and their Agricultural Program supporting our next generation of farmers”. (Doris pictured with Sally and members of MSHS.)
24 DECEMBER 2022 HINTERLAND TIMES COMMUNITY NEWS
by ANGUS RICHARD
It occurred to me watching the news in what was a true B.F.O moment (blinding flash of the obvious) that we are indeed so lucky to be living on the Sunshine Coast.
The news is frequently splattered with footage of children in refugee camps in places like Syria and the Sudan. Fly blown, under-nourished and devoid of the most basic medical facilities. Then Ukraine, with all its carnage, primitive battlefield dressing stations, the devastation of war, the smell of sudden death and a lifetime of maiming.
I have just come out of hospital for a knee replacement and the contrast was immeasurable. The sheer availability of professionalism, skill, technology, five-star facilities, service and care of the highest quality here on the Coast is breathtaking.
How lucky are we when you contrast the struggle and despair of so many elsewhere. We have so much that is just too easy to take for granted. I simply went out and got a new knee. They would struggle to find a used medical dressing.
Mind you I have advised our children that with all the new bits I have acquired over a long life, and the exotic metallic composition of my interior, that when my time comes to slip from the perch, they should perhaps forget the crematorium and seek a smelter!
I have, however, learned from the gaining of a new knee and hip that there are two traps on which you will not be briefed, even in the most advanced of our coastal medical facilities. This key knowledge I will now share. Those of a more sensitive nature should look away at this point.
I was kindly provided after the knee replacement with one of those raised toilet seats that sits above the toilet. This minimizes the need to bend the knee too far when sitting down.
Sitting higher, from a man’s perspective, means that the princely family jewel needs to be at more of an acute angle to ensure the flow is directed straight down. All the better, of course, if you are blessed with the replication of a horse.
Not being of the equine variety there, I sat the morning after the operation but failed to check the departure angle! Suddenly I found myself seated in the center of an ever-increasing moat having missed the porcelain completely!
The nursing staff were very kind with comforting words like “Don’t worry, it often happens”, but I suspect they were thinking, “Oh you could put a couple of ducks and a swan on that lot”.
What was really embarrassing from a personal viewpoint was that I had a similar disaster when the hip was replaced. Again, the guide books don’t share these essential plumbing briefings.
When you have a hip replaced your thigh swells considerably, as too do the aforementioned family jewels. The upshot is that nothing hangs down any more as the swelling enforces only a vertical departure. Thus, I sat the morning after operation oblivious of this imposed north/ south architecture.
Suddenly, and with some astonishment, I was transported to the shores of Lake Burleigh Griffin and the Captain James Cook Memorial Jet. Certainly not 152 meters high and with an exit velocity of 260 kph.
I had unknowingly created a brilliant, scaled-down replica, which majestically rose right before my eyes and swiftly became a significant water feature across the bathroom!
Underscoring the sheer quality of the service we get from our truly brilliant medical facilities, I should mention that through the mail the other day I received this slightly strange but charming invitation from the hospital.
They were asking if I would like to attend a forthcoming seminar that they put on for young mums and dads. The seminar was on the subject of “Potty Training for Toddlers!”
Can’t think why I got an invitation?

HOLISTIC
Regarding the Autism spectrum, there are two brain circuits influencing human behaviour that Prof BaronCohen contends are hugely relevant to autism and social functioning.
What is autism?
Lately I’ve done a lot of reading about autism and thought I’d share what I’ve learnt so far, in particular from Professor Simon Baron-Cohen’s latest book The Pattern Seekers, Dr Tony Attwood’s Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome, and from Temple Grandin’s book The Autistic Mind
Where to start? I think all of us are familiar with the idea that we’re “naturally good” at some things and have to learn other things “the hard way”, if at all.
To use a computing metaphor, we’re born with a hard drive and an operating system, but the “software” of our social, physical, and spiritual learning environment can dramatically shape the output we can generate. It’s nature and nurture that shapes all of our attributes, but to varying degrees and with varying ease.
Biofield Tuning is a truly amazing sound therapy method using tuning forks on and around your body to relieve stress, release pain and alleviate anxiety
… Whether it’s physical, mental, emotional, environmental or ancestral, Biofield Tuning is a powerful practice that helps you feel lighter and become more free.
… With over 30 years experience in the world of health and healing, I offer a unique approach to my practice, in the comfort of your own home when it best suits you.
The first is the “empathy circuit”, which governs how we sense the emotions of others through their facial expressions, body movement, and vocal tone, as well as the complex interplay of these factors when people relate to one another in groups.
This circuit allows us to create an internal image of what another person may believe, think, and feel in order to guide our behaviour directed toward them and influence their behaviour towards us. This is known as “theory of mind”.
The second brain circuit is the “systemising circuit” that seeks patterns in the external environment, particularly causal relationships between variables.
He argues convincingly from large population studies that there is a bell curve distribution, and apparent trade off between these circuits. That is, most of us are good at both empathising and systemising, with a tendency to be slightly better at one or the other, but there are extremes of each in small numbers.
At one end of this spectrum are the “extreme empathisers”. These are the people who always know what to say to make others feel better, can read a room and diffuse tension effortlessly, who know when everyone’s birthday is and send a card, but struggle mightily to set up their new TV or use more than the most basic functions on their Smartphone.
As we are a fundamentally social species, extreme empathisers are well accepted socially, though struggle in formal education settings where systematic learning patterns are valued more highly.
This, coupled with a deep attachment to facts and the truth, means it’s very unwise to ask “Does my bum look big in this?”.
Autism is primarily a disability of social learning, and there is a strong overlap with those categorised as “extreme systemisers” using this model. Prof Baron-Cohen suggests most of the great leaps in human knowledge and skill have arisen through the work of extreme systemisers, many of whom would meet today’s criteria for an autism diagnosis.
Enormous benefit flows from recognising the value of this style of thinking, both in reducing loneliness (and attendant depression and anxiety) for autistic people, and in harnessing the full potential of those with extreme systemising abilities for the greater good.
Our current education systems don’t cater well to the known variety of human learning styles and processing, and those at the extremes of the spectrum are particularly poorly served.
At the other end of the spectrum are the “extreme systematisers”. Their happy place is finding patterns in complex data sets, and defining and refining the rules that describe stable systems and actions. Such stable
Not all autistic people have “special powers” though, and it’s important to recognise that families and schools often need support. In fact around 30% have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and acalculia,

or difficulties with learning to speak, emotional regulation, or an ADHD diagnosis as well.
In addition, many autistic people live with sensory processing differences that can make living in a neurotypical world a challenge. Routine and soft sounds may be experienced as painful sensations, for others it might be touch, texture, taste, or smell that are experienced as highly negative sensations.
On the other hand, some sensations may bring intense positive feelings. For example Hannah Gadsby describes how the colour blue has always given her an intense visceral sense of calm and peace, and synaesthesia (the ability to perceive sounds as colours) is also much more common in people with autism.
There’s a damaging myth autistic people and extreme systemisers don’t feel or care as much about other people – the archetype of the “evil genius”. In fact it’s more accurate to say those with ASD usually care very deeply about others, but can find sensing what others need or want very difficult.
The difficulty in connecting with others over a range of shared interests, showing flexibility around change or the unexpected, knowing when to speak and when to listen, and difficulties understanding cues around personal space and attraction, can all lead to exclusion, ridicule, and bullying, as well as unemployment and delayed independence.
For those who know them well, autistic people and extreme systemisers are often uncommonly reasonable, honest, and fair in their dealings with others, and if their social learning is prioritised and others work to understand their mindset, employment, friendship, and partnership can all be successful.
The lens of Neurodiversity I’ve touched on in this article is an important way that we can see autism through understanding, support, and appreciation of what each mind type brings to the table.!

Use Your Mental Edge
Give presence, not presents
It’s Christmas time here soon on the Coast, and it’s easy to miss the forest from the trees and completely overlook some of the small, simple things that can disproportionately affect our levels of happiness and general fulfillment! And not from the material presents we receive, rather the ‘Presence’ we give.
Luckily, you don’t have to figure it out all by yourself this year. Below, take a quick look at four actionable tips that can be easily worked into your month of mistletoe.
1. Be present, not give presents
This is a powerful communication skill that can increase intimacy/empathy in both intimate and other relationships. When was the last time you truly paused and took time to understand another human?
Being present can help you connect with others in a way that words/gifts cannot. It’s an act that can make people feel vulnerable, but it can also be incredibly beautiful and healing.
2. Wrap a hug around a person, not paper around a thing Dr Audrey of Psychology Today states Oxytocin is a chemical in our bodies that scientists sometimes call the “cuddle hormone.” This is because its levels rise when we hug, touch, or sit close to someone else. Oxytocin is associated with happiness and less stress.
3. Consider donating food, not shopping for more food Palmwoods has a free little pantry (7 Lingara Ave, Palmwoods), Wurtulla Has a free little pantry (512 Nicklin Way, Wurtulla) Maleny has one at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Giving at Christmas time is not about making a donation, it’s about making a difference to our towns.
4. Be the light for your family, before you see the lights with your family
A really important and powerful principle that I love to use in coaching and with family is the ‘GO First Principle’ (Be the Light) - it comes from the hypnosis field.
Basically, the easiest way to push somebody into some specific emotional state is to go into that state yourself and the other person will pick up on it and unconsciously follow you.
Emotions can be contagious, and we want some positive feelings this Christmas.
Merry Christmas Hinterland Times readers, be the light for your loved ones this year.

t feels like a bit of a missed opportunity to have not run this piece in October and filled it with spooky Halloween related puns, but nevertheless, this time we’ll be talking about bats.
Bats have a very colourful reputation in Australia, especially in recent years where so many theories have been swirling around about bat-borne disease mutations. And it’s true that bats are vectors for particular humantransmissible viruses, but they’re also a unique part of our native ecology.
They fill the skies at night when the birds have gone to sleep, pollinating many of our native fruit-bearing plant species and keeping insect populations under control. I would hesitate to use the word ‘batty’, but there are many wildlife carers on the Sunshine Coast who are extremely passionate about these featherless fliers.
INovember and December are the months where bats tend to have recently given birth to their young – as a result there will be many tiny little bats hanging out in secure little perches. Most of these aren’t actually in caves but in trees, often in large colonies around sources of water.
This gives them somewhere safe to spend the day while they rest and get ready for another exciting night out on the town – although their order is generally something quite tame, like fruit juice.
Bats have adapted to see very well in low light conditions, so they face very little predation and competition during their chosen foraging hours. They aren’t blind at all, just very sensitive to too much light and find it very difficult to see properly during daylight as a result.
The days are finally starting to warm up, and it is then that we realise the value of shade trees in our built environment.
Trees, because they are largely filled with water, provide an extra cooling affect around our homes. Deciduous trees are even better, because they let in the winter sunlight, and then provide shade in summer.
Particularly in Maleny however, most tree species tend to get pretty big, and if they are near your house they can cause problems from falling branches, or whole tree failure.
This doesn’t mean that we can’t have trees near our houses, it just means we have to manage them. We look after many properties where the trees are close to the house, and provide visual amenity, summer shade, wind protection and habitat, and usually all that is necessary is a size reduction prune every four years or so. This lets the client keep their trees and live in safety.
In fact that is the majority of our work as arborists in the Maleny area i.e. making decisions about, and implementing management strategies for the trees on people‘s properties.
As I mentioned earlier, everything gets big in Maleny! We are blessed to have such vigourous vegetative growth.
Sometimes trees do outgrow their usefulness, but until then they are always a great asset to a property and simply need to be managed properly.
Their acute night vision and agility, like birds during the day, doesn’t always prevent them from running into accidents, however, particularly involving obstacles they would not normally expect to encounter in the wild like cars, glass windows or tree netting.
Cats can also be a predator they haven’t developed to deal with in Australia, as they can also hunt very well at night. Microbats can even be found in tight spaces like chimneys or other cavities within a house.
The authority on bats on the Sunshine Coast is Bat Rescue Inc. (batrescue.org.au) who run a 24-
bat lyssavirus (ABLV), which can easily be transmitted to a human. It is closely related to rabies, similarly being carried in saliva and can be transferred through open wounds such as bites or scratches.
This sort of incident is very uncommon, and not all bats carry ABLV, however of the three incidents where ABLV has been transmitted to a human, all three have been fatal.
As a result, bats should never be physically handled by a member of the public. Specialist rescuers can operate with due caution and protective equipment and are also vaccinated against the disease.
We encourage members of the public to alert rescuers if they encounter a lone young bat or an adult that appears sick or injured, but please don’t try to handle it yourself!
Found an injured
sick animal? The HT also recommends contacting one of the many wildlife rescue services across the Sunshine Coast, such as the following: Wildlife Rescue Qld 0478 901 801; WILVOs 5441 6200; RSPCA 1300 ANIMAL; Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital 1300 369652; Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre 5442 8057; Bat Conservation and Rescue 0488 228134; Wildlife SEQ 0468 484 994.
Piccabeen Palms Archontophoenix cunninghamiana
The Piccabeen Palm is a beautiful feature of our Sunshine Coast rainforests. Mostly found in moist, sheltered sites and gullies, they grow up to 25 metres tall, and can grow in thick groves in swampy areas where they often thrive. A great example of this is at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.
Through summer, the Piccabeen Palm will be bursting with several heavily flowering and fruiting branches, which are an important food source for many of our pollinators. You can often hear the bees if you are close by while they are in bloom. Species such as Topknot Pigeons, Wompoo Fruit Doves, Green Cat Birds and flying foxes can be found feasting on the fruit. Such wildlife are a vital part
of spreading seed further through the forest. The fruit, a bright red, thinly fleshed berry, will mostly drop close to the parent tree where they continue to provide food for more ground-dwelling wildlife, and eventually germinate in the shady, damp understory. Piccabeen groves are also known to provide habitat for Spiny Crayfish, who’s burrows can often be found through the forest
floor particularly along creek lines.
The Barung crew along with our dedicated volunteers have been busy collecting seed this year, which is a careful task requiring seed to be collected in more remote locations as to avoid collecting from plants that have potentially hybridised with Alexander palms (a common landscape plant).
Because of these efforts, the Maleny Community Nursery at Porters Lane is now flush with quality Piccabeen Palm tubestock, ready for your revegetation or landscaping projects. So pop in and have a chat to our friendly staff if you are working on a project and would like some tips and advice on other species to include.

by JAMIE WALKER
There is a butterfly that acts and behaves like a moth. Along bush trails or in quiet garden corners, it might be disturbed by our presence and movement, fly fast and jerkily for a few moments before settling quickly at low level, and virtually disappear as it closes its wings to resemble a dead leaf.
This is the Evening Brown. It shuns sunlight; lively only at dusk, in deep shade or under densely overcast skies. In those conditions, it is as active as any butterfly, showing all the usual interaction between males in territorial competition and in response to the allurement of females.
I have watched an individual make the same dusk journey along a backyard path, on a number of consecutive evenings. It is a creature of essential habits, but governed by a need to avoid bright light.
Perhaps we are more familiar with the habits of microbats. In the gloom of caves, under bridges and in the abandoned gold mines of the Conondale Range, Common Bentwing and Eastern Horseshoe Bats hang in quiet daytime clusters. At dusk, they emerge and fly out; first as a trickle of ones and twos, increasing to a steady stream as the light is finally lost.
Which brings me to a tale of dragonflies. Prehistoric insects, their lineage goes back to the time of dinosaurs.
Scientists believe they have changed little since then –continuing over time as a consistently successful life form.
I think of them mostly as creatures of dynamic movement and bright colour –vivid, metallic, enhanced by sunshine. But, on a night of heat, a monster came to our decking.
This was the Eastern Evening Darner, a splendid animal whose robust wings clashed and clattered along the ceiling, before it settled and allowed careful
In the Wild
observation. With a wingspan of thirteen centimetres, this was no ephemeral daytime jewel.
The insect was overall dark brown, except for its fabulous, compound eyes which were almost black. (There is no need for bright colour in the darkness). It is described as crepuscular, but I now know that it flies in the pitch dark - another agent in the natural army that feeds on Queensland’s nocturnal insect hoards.
The following day, with my land care group, I ventured into the bush beyond our fence. I ducked under a low branch to pull weeds around a tree’s stem and on the shaded foliage in front of my face, sat the Darner. Those eyes worked in an instance, and the animal whisked away to vanish with eye-baffling abruptness.
So much life demands sunshine in order to function – but, in our climate, many successful creatures achieve their potential hiding from the light.
If a tree falls in the forest...
As the old saying goes “if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it still make a sound?” This often causes one to pause and say either “of course it does” or the eyes of the listener to wander, as this existentialist conundrum confounds and questions the nature of their reality!
My new version of this saying - in an age when we need to be planting trees in massive numbers, rather than indulgently waiting for them to fall, even with the noble objective of achieving enlightenment, is as follows:
If a tree seedling is planted in the field, grows to be part of a forest, sequesters carbon, becomes a source of life and biodiversity for the wider ecosystem, improves water filtration and quality in the landscape and even looks pretty, but then eventually dies and falls over, only to again
sequester carbon, become a source of life and biodiversity for the wider ecosystem, improve water filtration and quality in the landscape, then does it actually matter if it makes a sound when it falls over?
My thoughts are no, not really... Planting, growing, making life, is what really matters, that’s all really. I’m sure that, quite possibly, there is something deep and meaningful in this, but I’m too much on the material plane to get that perhaps ...
Ok, so let’s say I’ve won you over with my philosophical ramblings, now where can you get some trees to plant, I hear you say. Well, that’s where we at Forest Heart ecoNursery can help. We are your one stop shop in the heart of Maleny for local native plants, cultivar native plants, bush foods, timber trees, flora and fauna books, and so much more.
The focus of Forest Heart is to work directly with you, the gardener, and the wider community to restore, appreciate, learn about and work with our amazing local biodiversity through education and practical hands-on work, through gardening, revegetation and bush regeneration.
There’s never been a better time to be planting, growing, and harvesting native plants, apart from yesterday, but today will have to do, at a pinch. Come and visit the ever-growing enterprise that is Forest Heart ecoNursery, check out our stock and most importantly get planting today, so that you and generations to come can be harvesting beauty, shade, fruit, timber and perhaps even some enlightenment and oneness with the cosmos in the not-toodistant future.

Homes for Everyone Podcast
The dire state of the Sunshine Coast housing market and the unexpected stories of heartbreak from the current crisis are being highlighted in a podcast named 'Homes for Everyone'.
Spearheaded by local businessman Mal Cayley, the first episode featured Brightwater woman Nicole Stevens, who lost all home security during COVID-19 despite having a well paid, full-time job and excellent rental history.
"I got a phone call from our property manager saying the owner had decided to sell, the property sold very quickly and it was to owner occupiers so we were told at the end of our lease we would have to move out," Ms Stevens said on the podcast.
She applied for properties months in advance, and even created a brochure to show both the real estate and owners she was a great tenant, as the move out date loomed.
"We got to two days before that date and I didn't have a home so I booked a storage facility and it was the worst feeling in the world,” Ms Stevens said.
Ms Stevens was offered a studio granny flat short term by a friend, while she continued to search for somewhere to live with her three children.
"I felt I had failed my children as a parent, it was unbelievable to me that I couldn't provide them a bed each,” Ms Stevens said. "One of my daughters was sleeping on the floor and the other daughter had to share a queen sized bed with her mum."
Seven weeks later she was approved for a property,
but it took Ms Stevens months to unpack as she was nervous it would happen all over again.
Direct Collective COO Mal Cayley said it is normal for these feelings to linger. "We are hearing these same stories of shame and fear daily now that we have launched the Homes for Everyone initiative," Mr Cayley said.
Mr Cayley said 5,500 properties are missing from the rental pool on the Sunshine Coast, meaning around 14,000 locals were put in the same boat as Ms Stevens.
“We have already lost thousands of people from this community who are aged under 30 because there is nowhere for them to live.”
The Homes for Everyone initiative is calling for people to put their digital hand up in support by filling in the form at homesforeveryone.com.au so that the collective voice of the community can make real, positive changes.
