Twelve talented artists: Tia Carrigan, Thom Stuart, Jack MacRae, Bridgette Chilli, Courtney Scheu and Itamar Freed, EJ Zyla, Lauren Jones, Mieke van den Berg, Odessa Mahony-de Vries, Alison Mooney, Peta O’Hara and Kim Herringe were handpicked to create a special work of art for a unique public display on the Howard Street Wall.

Sunshine Coast Council Public Art Curator, Julie Hauritz, explains how the Howard Street Wall project was developed with a curatorial focus, with the idea to have multiple artists ‘exhibit’ works for a period of 2-3 years, with an intention to exhibit new artists’ works in the future. “The artists were selected and invited directly with an intention to provide a snapshot of the diversity of practice of local artists, some of whom primarily have a gallery practice and some a street art practice or combination. “Someof the artists are emerging while others more established, with practices ranging from collage, painting, printmaking and illustration.

“This kind of mirrors the intention of a lot of my work – shifting perspectives, an invitation to feel both our individual human insignificance universally and the infinite physical and emotional sensations we experience on the daily and can tend to take for granted.”

“Visually, the inspiration was to share details not normally visible in public art. Marks like pencil lines, the texture of oil pastels, even small colour puddles, the texture of the canvas itself,” Alison explains.

Inspiring your academic journey

This was to be the beginning of a life richly infused with the pleasures of many forms of music.

Now a permanent presence in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland music scene through his regular facilitation of music gigs like Glasshouse Musos, Beerwah and Muzika Maleny, Michael’s musical destiny was not acknowledged until his teenage years.

Discovering folk and rock music at age 15, Michael progressed to playing guitar before making a foray into the wonderful world of musicals where he loved to sing and act.Meanwhile, he was working hard scholastically –doing maths and science – and training almost every night in football and cricket.

by FREDRIKSENJUDY

The first inkling that Dr Michael Whiticker could be deeply touched by music was after the piano teacher – who was providing lessons to his three older sisters – had left the house, and seven-year-old Michael would stand at the piano and replay the same tunes – by ear. Michael at his keyboards

However, it was at university while he was studying engineering that a watershed moment finally occurred, which eventually led him to intense study of music.

In brief, Michael holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and his composing credits include international commissions from Germany, Canada, Sweden, Korea and Holland. After serving as the composer-in-residence for Australian Opera and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, he lectured at the University of Western Sydney and James CookHeUniversity.hasrepresented Australian music on a range of panels here and overseas, as well as having a long history of working collaboratively with theatre and dance companies.Aftermoving to the Sunshine Coast, he decided to help develop the raw talents of those in the local communities. AsIsitinMichael’s music room, I am treated to an example of his fine craftsmanship. Mellow tones wash over me as his fingers effortlessly glide over the piano keys, gently tantalising an improvised melody from the instrument in concert with our conversation.

Muzika has been fantastic, I love working in Maleny –Maleny artists are such an inspiration for me. “I get to work with the cream of them, not just musicians – but also the poets. Maleny has such a high standard artistically. I consider myself very lucky. If I can facilitate their talents, then that’s all that matters.”

In this respect, Michael loves to help emerging artists and has been known to take aspiring songwriters under his wing.  “I like to work with singer/songwriters because I’ve written a lot of songs myself and have a lot of experience with arranging and producing work.

Just over a year later he was accepted and so began his apprenticeship in music. Thanks to that decision, Michael’s musical credentials are now exhaustive.

Glasshouse Musos is at the Beerwah Hotel on the second Tuesday of every month from 6pm with free entry. Muzika is at Maleny RSL on the first Thursday of every month from 6.30pm with bar and meals available, entry $10.

Musos began 11 years ago as an opportunity to do things in the community with other musicians for other people. We’re now up to over 300 events; we’ve had over 400 different acts on our stage. It’s been great fun. “This has extended now into Muzika (which grew out of Club Acoustic, run by Jacinta Foale for the previous six years).

Then back to “Thereality. mostimportant thing to me is inspiring others to make music,” he concludes.

Michael welcomes the great range of people, including amateurs, who perform at the Beerwah Hotel at the monthly open mic sessions. It doesn’t matter if the performers play cover of other artists’ work or write their own songs.  “We like to provide opportunity for everyone,” he“Glasshousesays.

He added saxophone, harmonica, violin, mandolin, flute and percussion to the guitar and keyboards he was playing, but says this didn’t really satisfy him. He didn’t want to practise all these instruments but did want to make music with them, and so he turned towards composing on multi-track tape machines.Soon after, while playing in rock bands full-time, he discovered the music of Beethoven and then Stravinsky and decided to set his sights on the study of composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

2. The abundant life comes to those who live a life of prayer. Prayer is not bringing a grocery list to God. It is a trusting child speaking to his loving Father. Who desires to fulfill every need.

4. Abundant living comes to those who live a life of giving. The more selfish a person is the less he will truly enjoy the blessings of God.

3. Abundant living comes to those who submit fully to His will. Two lives that must be contrasted are: (1) the joy in the life of a person who obeys God and (2) the guilty, hard life of one who is in rebellion to God.

Many who profess to be devoted followers of Jesus find themselves living far short of what could be classified as the “abundant life”. The abundant life is not the same as the affluent life or the life without problem; the abundant life is a life promised to those converts to Christ who make a total response of their lives to the Lord.

1. The abundant life comes to those who have genuine faith. This faith is total trust in the One who created us and redeemed us. It involves dependence upon Him and acceptance of His suggestions and corrections.

If you are wondering how you can help at the shelter, there are many ways to get involved. It's not just time or money they need; you can help in other ways too.

When buying a property, it is important to have some safeguards in the contract. In Queensland there are no regulations for a home Seller to disclose any information about their property. The emphasis is on the Buyer to satisfy themselves with the soundness of the improvements, termite activity and survey points.

Building & Pest inspections are carried out to pick up if there are any major faults that may be unknown to the Sellers and their agents. Buyers need to be aware that nearly all homes with a bit of age will have some faults which are mostly minor and are not worth worrying about and the Contract can be made unconditional in that regard. If they have major concerns, the Buyers can discuss their reports with the selling agent who then liaises with their clients, the Sellers.

Good lawyers and agents will advise Buyers to make their offer subject to Building & Pest inspections as well as finance (if required) or completion of another sale etc. In Queensland, when a contract is subject to a satisfactory Building & Pest inspection, the buyers arrange professional inspections at their cost, usually within the first 14 days from Contract date.

"The type of donations we are looking for are books under five years old, quality bric-a-brac, jewellery, quality pet beds, crates, bowls and garden equipment. You can visit our website for the full list.

"The CBC makes such a big difference. Thank you to everyone who chose us as their nominated recipient in their Maleny IGA shopping trips."

Every single bequest and donation has a positive and long-lasting effect on the thousands of animals the team at SCARS cares for.

The SCARS team is grateful for all the support and like to show this in any way they can. "We are proud to give back to the community through our work experience programs in the Duke of Edinburgh programs and provide a space for volunteers to learn and practice new skills," said Penny.

"We have been lucky to receive invaluable support throughout the years from the Hinterland and Sunshine Coast community, including being involved in the Maleny IGA Community Benefit Club (CBC).

“It allows us to continue feeding and providing care and rehoming opportunities for all our cats and dogs,” shared Penny.

Under normal contract conditions, the Buyers can terminate the contract if they are dissatisfied with their inspection report. Most though are still in love with the property and are happy to proceed if the Sellers agree to rectify any significant faults. Sellers must be aware that by not being prepared to be reasonable about rectifying any major faults in their home, that they run the risk of losing that Buyer. Because the price for the property has been agreed to in the contract, often Sellers feel they are losing money by having to pay for any repairs. Occasionally there are more delicate negotiations over the Seller agreeing to fix significant faults than there is over the total sale price of the property. Our recommendation is for any prospective home Seller to have a Building & Pest inspection carried out BEFORE they put their property on the market. By doing this, they can rectify any faults and reduce the chance of both sides receiving nasty surprises after a contract is entered into. This is especially so if termite activity is found in or near the home. Reports in advance are also a powerful selling point to Buyers to show that the Sellers are thorough and committed to ensuring the Buyers have minimal reasons to terminate the contract. It really would be helpful if it were mandatory for Sellers to provide these reports in advance. Sellers need not necessarily rectify every fault in the report however at least all parties (including the agent) would be aware of the true condition of the property. This would contribute to more transparency and fairness for both Sellers and Buyers.

The days when Company Directors could plead ignorance of their Company’s affairs are long gone with the courts showing very little sympathy for Director who use ignorance as a defence. Directors are expected to: • Be proactive and actively participate in the management of the Company. Total nonparticipation is impermissible; • Understand the role that a Director performs; • Ensure that the solvency of the Company can be monitored on a continuing basis. Directors in particular have an obligation to prevent their Company from incurring debts that the Company cannot pay for.

The Nambour Bowls Club celebrated its 90th Birthday on Sunday 14 August 2022 with a stunning Open Fours event featuring 30 teams from across the Sunshine Coast region filling its two beautiful lawn bowling greens. Visiting bowlers from as far afield as Tasmania and New Zealand also enjoyed the special occasion.

It is clear that although Directors may delegate certain responsibilities to other subordinates in the Company, they are still obliged to have an active role in the management of the affairs of the Company. To fail in this obligation to properly discharge the duties of the office of a Director could lead to personal exposure to liability and in many cases significant sums of money.

It is the Company’s cash-flow which is of crucial importance and this is where the line between solvent and insolvent trading can be found. A Company is only solvent if it is able to pay all of its debts “as and when they fall due” – not just some of its debts. If it is alleged that a Director has contravened the Corporations Act in relation to insolvent trading the Director must be able to prove one of the following as •defence:when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to expect that the Company was solvent and would remain solvent even if the debt was incurred; or • when the Company incurred the debt the Director had relied upon the information from a subordinate; or • that when the debt was incurred the Director, because of illness or some other good reason, was unable to take part in the management of the company at that time; or • that the Director took all reasonable steps to stop the Company from incurring the debt.

The amalgamated Nambour Bowls Club has progressively evolved from those early pioneering days offering two excellent bowling greens with lighting for night bowls events.

Kooralbyn

The Nambour Bowling Club, as it was initially known, was formed in August 1932 when a group of local businessmen headed by the local Shire Chairman Mr J T Lowe decided a bowling club would be a great asset for the town. Upon being elected as President at the inaugural meeting, Mr Lowe said it was the first occasion on which he had taken part in any sport, but from the first game it appeared that the bowls "bug" had entered his shoes and he believed that it was there to stay. He expressed appreciation of the honour and would do all he could to further the game in Nambour and district.

Mr Lowe served as Club President for three years and fulfilled the role of Greens Director for the first 10 years. A World War 1 veteran Mr Bob Dixon secured and held for 26 years the inaugural greenkeeping job after a chance meeting in town with Mr Lowe whilst on a journey to Brisbane from Biggenden, where the only full-time job he could gain was cutting prickly pear.

Such was the growing popularity of the sport that the Nambour Ladies Bowling Club was subsequently formed in 1938.

The Club has recently replaced all of its ageing shade structures around the greens with funding assistance from successful applications under Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program.

Lawn bowls on the Sunshine Coast made its mark around the hinterland towns and in 1937 the Nambour Club was instrumental in the establishment of the first interclub competition. Nambour, Palmwoods and Mapleton Clubs joined with Maroochydore, the only coastal club at that time.

It was divided into three sections: produce storeroom, main store and the bank and post office. In 1911 the building was owned by a former manager of the building, A M Hunt & Co, in 1921 Myers & Hirst, in 1929 Myers & Waddell, and in 1933 W J Burnett & Son, (Rixon Burnett later). From 1933 the building was called Waddell’s Economy Store for a substantial period, followed in 1961 by Edgar Cranney, and in 1971 it became known as Boxsells.Theoriginal building was built of local pit-sawn beech timber and was demolished in 1995 by Selwyn Larsen from Caloundra, because of white ant infestation. It was rebuilt in the same character as the original. From the early days, the Waddell Family was involved in this business. In 1918, Vic Waddell’s father, Jim, joined the staff of A M Hunt & Co as the senior grocer. He rode around the district on horseback, collecting orders, which were later delivered by cream carriers for 3d or 6d (2 to 5 cents). In 1928 the horse was replaced by a 1920 model T Ford ute. In 1921 the business was ‘Myers & Hirst’ and underwent renovations, installing modern display windows, a 32V automatic electric lighting plant (electricity never arrived in Maleny until WWII) and a two-station Lawson cash system. by DESLEY MALONE Maleny Historical Memories Street

In 1928 Jim Waddell was invited to become a partner. Mr Hirst sold his shares at the start of the Great Depression, forming ‘Myers & Waddell Pty. Ltd.’ but the business closed in 1933.

Over the years many shops operated from the building at 15 Maple Street, including a tailoring business, drapery, newsagent, dressmaking, Maleny’s first Post Office, ES&A Bank, Neilen’s Transport, a coffee shop, petrol bowser, DPI, livestock office, Red Rooster, Camera Centre, Wine and Cellar Bottle Shop, Arch Medical Centre, and Boxsells Real Estate, to name a few. Vic was very involved in the Boy Scout movement in Maleny and became the Field Commissioner for the Boy Scout Association. He later started and became the curator of the Scout Museum at Samford. For his services to Scouting, Vic received Australia’s highest Scout awards, culminating with an OAM. He passed away from cancer in 1994.

The Maleny Store reopened again as ‘Waddells Economy store’ and traded until 1961 when the dairy industry was in a recession. Bankruptcy followed, Jim and Elsie Waddell moved to retire in Caloundra and their son Vic and family moved to Brisbane.

Where did you grow up?

We are fully licensed and offer a casual dining experience with inside and outside seating. It is a beautiful garden setting and ambient environment. We have a wonderful little cocktail bar and beer garden with chilled background music. We have pizzas for everyone. Meat lovers, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free. We have created an amazing pizza dough that many customers say is to die for! We are overwhelmed by the wonderful compliments we receive from many customers daily. What do you enjoy the most about your business?

I normally like to exercise, take my dog for walks daily and gardening. I love experiencing different cultures whenever possible. The more you travel seeing other parts of the world, the more you appreciate what every culture has to offer. Food is at the heart of that. I also visit my family weekly on the Sunshine Coast. Do you have a favourite quote or saying that has inspired you?

And what did you do before this?

Yes I do: “Build it and they will come.” It’s a line from a movie called Field of Dreams

Lane 32 is nestled in Maleny Lane on Maple Street - a popular spot where food and music lovers convene. Run by Terry Murphy, this eaterie serves wood-fired pizzas packed with flavour, yummy side dishes and wine, beer and cocktails to complement the meal. We caught up with Terry recently to see how business is faring after two years of Covid stress.

I start early in the morning making fresh Neapolitan dough ready in time to create the pizzas. We prepare all our pizza topping using only quality produce that takes our pizzas to the next level. What do you like to do in your spare time?

I originally opened it as a Thai restaurant, but wasn’t able to continue as the Thai chef had left after a few months and I wasn’t able to find a replacement. I had to close the restaurant and reopen as a cafe and that’s when Covid hit. Over the past two years I have been trying to find my niche and thought what menu would better suit these difficult times during Covid and lock downs. I decided to re-launch as a Neapolitan Pizza restaurant after doing extensive research and testing pizza techniques. I am proud to say we have created an amazing pizza experience. Please tell us more about your pizza venue?

I grew up in Brisbane and moved to Sydney 30 years ago where I had a printing business in the city. I sold it 10 years ago and moved to Thailand to experience living and working in another culture. I had a successful restaurant and boutique resort on the island of Phuket.

I sold my business in Thailand and moved back to Australia just before Covid happened. After arriving back in Australia I wanted to buy another business in hospitality and wanted to create a similar feel with what I created with my resort in Thailand. My resort had a rating of 9.3 on Booking.com. Lane 32 was a perfect setting where I felt I could recreate something special for the local community and for tourists visiting the hinterland. I wanted to create an ambient environment where customers could come to relax and enjoy a nice meal and drinks, meeting up with friends and loved ones. I also love dogs and wanted it to be a very dog friendly place to bring your pooch. How long have you been running Lane 32?

Scottish Australian artist Katie Harris-MacLeod combines the use of both anthropic and organic materials foraged from surrounding landscapes to explore themes of (re) connection, memory, ritual, time and place. Sleep Drawings, is a series of artworks inspired by lucid dream memories from sleeping on the edge of mountains; mind wanderings, dreams of creatures that live within the mountains, memories, myths, speaking rocks, lichens and mosses, mountain flowers, mist and distant echoes from the human world below. Layer upon layer of inks made from the landscape, MacLeod etches old and new memory into paper surfaces becoming a palimpsest of time. A ritual of place and a ritual remembering the spaces in-between; the lost places and the thin places.

the idiosyncrasies of our times.

The debate this week has been less political and more focused on making better laws. As a result, Labor has accepted a number of amendments to a bill it brought to Parliament to commit to a 43% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030. It looks like parliament is working better and finally putting environmental action ahead of party politics.

G’G’DadLove Second

A couple of things have cheered me up. We have a new Australian government and it met in parliament for the first time this week. For the first time ever, we have a large group of independents in parliament in both houses who share concerns about the environment and the way parliament has gone about its business in the past.

(2038)

Most people just think of councils as being responsible for maintaining roads, waste removal and overviewing development/building applications. However, it was great so see our Council putting such emphasis on environmental matters and on community health and well-being. I hope you remember the fun times we had with you around Bokarina Beach in the park and playground, on the walking tracks and on the beach.

The second thing that reassured me was a Budget Statement sent out by our local government, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. This brochure summarises Council expenditure into 6 main categories –three of which being the Environment, Parks and Gardens and Community Services and Facilities. What really impressed me was that almost 50% of its expenditure was on these three areas.

A third sign of optimism is the way individuals are stepping up to build better communities. Up on the Blackall Range where we used to live, Wayne Parcell, has been inspirational in creating a festival to celebrate togetherness in the community. The Rangebow Festival had 4 themes, diversity, inclusion, sustainability and reconciliation.Itavoided using labels that automatically exclude some and offered a program that catered for all through a range of free and ticketed events across the four themes. I’m hoping that it will become a regular event on the Range and inspire other communities to develop similar festivals to enhance community well-being. You really enjoyed it when G’G’Mum took you to the Montville Markets and in so many ways, the festival is an extension of thatMaybespirit.it’s not too late for the generation of 2022 to right some of the wrongs we created through ignorance, selfishness and political indifference. We seem to have recognised the need and appear to be expressing a will –now we have to work out how to repair past mistakes.

The views expressed in the Local Musings column are the writer’s and not necessarily the views of the HT team. G’Day Win,I’msorry my first letter was so pessimistic. I was just depressed about the politics, both home and abroad, of the time and fearful for our environment and democracy. Today I’m much more optimistic that we might just be able to leave you a future.

The beautiful artwork that Jim presented was a culmination of his intense love of Australian animals and a life spent observing, understanding and illustrating them. This enabled him to capture the essence of their marginalisation - using joy and humour rather than guilt and recrimination.Localauthor Elaine Green totally synced with the ideas behind Jim’s crazy titles and her words featured in the publication of a small book, same title, further underlining the importance of this ‘call to arms’. of poor learning outcomes – a dysfunctional classroom environment.Infartoo many classrooms, the most common instructions teachers give students include: stop running around and sit down/stop throwing things around the room/ put your phone away/ take your work out.

It has become apparent that schools are failing to deliver desirable learning outcomes for many students and the touted solution is to attract and keep better teachers. However, this solution fails to address the primary cause

Until schooling and teachers are valued, more money and smarter teachers just won’t make a difference. Schools must retake control of what is learnt in the classroom. Students must understand that obeying rules and laws is a fundamental part of living in a democratic society.

The LNP is promoting the case for nuclear small modular reactors (SMR), however the latest CSIRO report states that “…The status of nuclear SMR has not changed. Following extensive consultation with the Australian electricity industry, the report findings do not see any prospect of domestic projects this decade, given the technology’s commercial immaturity and high cost. Future cost reductions are possible but depend on its successful commercial deployment overseas…”Currently there are no SMR’s commercially operational overseas and none likely before the end of this decade or maybe even the next.

27. Repented

We need to urgently address climate change and transition to net zero emissions, we do not have the luxury of time to wait for SMR’s or for a conventional nuclear power plants to be built. Solar, wind, and hydro power are proven, safer and available now.

Everyone seems to shrug their shoulders while our kids are becoming addicted to various substances and potentially damaging their young minds. (And also getting behind the wheel of a car and damaging someone else!) Why is this issue not paramount in our society? I don’t see any of the LNP standing up and making noise about this. Perhaps the new Labor government can pull their collective finger out? I do hope so.

25. Automaton (5) 26. Riding seat

Dear AttemptingEditor to appear relevant the Dutton LNP Opposition has called for informed debate about nuclear power’s costs and benefits. Seems like they have missed the annual reports from the CSIRO which have consistently confirmed that renewables remain the cheapest new-build electricity generation option in Australia.

Or is it a case of “Yes, let’s go nuclear, but not in my backyard?”

Herschel Baker International Liaison Director, Drug Free Australia Schools losing control

Any politician who proposes going nuclear should declare where in their electorate they would place one.

We had a great time meeting and greeting, and we are delighted to know that many of these works now decorate local walls, and that copies of our book are out there … reminding everyone HOW we can care for our native animals and give them a better chance of survival. Books can be bought via jim-cox-montville.com

And then there is still the problem of the radioactive waste. According to research from Stanford University and the University of British Columbia, SMR’s will generate more radioactive waste than conventional nuclear plants.

More on drugs Dear Editor, I have to agree with the ‘Drugs in Schools’ letter from your last issue. I cannot name the school, but it is a high school in the hinterland area, and my children tell me they can smell marijuana in the toilet block, regularly.

So, if the LNP members for Fisher and Fairfax think we should go nuclear, where would they put one in our region?

The lessons learnt by students are that they can break rules (and laws) with relative impunity and that anyone in a position of authority can be ignored, challenged, abused.

I am very concerned that this problem seems to be getting worse and wonder when the government will give some control back to the teachers/head teachers to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT?!

No wonder teachers are leaving the profession. Schools no longer have control of the classroom and what is being learnt in it. The national curriculum is an academic exercise that has no relevance when students can and do ignore their teachers.

Common student responses include: ignoring the instruction/saying no/you can’t make me/get f**ked/walking out of the classroom.

Poets are illustrators of words that create beauty and intensity, and the HT is proud to give them a platform.

How’s your mate or friend, Who hiding behind that mask…

Don’t you think that sometimes, We’re all focused to achieve… We must try and better ourselves, It is what we all believe…

MaggieLeunig Keep sending us your poems - we love receiving your creative work!

But what about those others, The ones who fall behind…. Do you think they don’t have?

The constant battle of rejection, Where things are not ok... Being an under achiever, Is not a burden or a curse… It’s just a moment in their lives, When things are in reverse…

A simple little gesture, That’s worth its weight in gold… I’m sure they have some stories, Waiting to be told… So today and every day, Put a smile upon their face… Share a joke or yarn, It will be a better place... © Len Newey

The Council has decided that Maleny’s a disgrace. It’s got no style or ambience; it needs “a sense of place”. So they’ve come up with a street-plan; they’re really on our case; Maple street will be so stunning there’ll be smiles on every face. They’ve had public meetings with us to show us what they’ve planned, with a pretty sketch so crowded that it’s hard to understand how their streetscape will attract folk from all across the land,  - while the voices of the critics have quietly been banned. It’s wiser to consider we’re not as dopey as they think. Their plan is so outrageous that I’ve marked it in red ink. It doesn’t need our millions to put us in the pink. While the parking is congested, it’s the trucks that give the stink! So wake up all you locals! Can’t you see we’re being snowed? Where’s that “feel” that we’ve been promised? You’ll find it’s just a code for spending lots of money that needn’t have been owed to the planners with their sketches. Tell them go and hit the road! © - the bard from the boondocks

The range of services available through community pharmacies for women is increasing and an example is the successful uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infection Pharmacy Pilot in Queensland which has seen more than 9000 women treated and 1000 hospital presentations avoided. This pilot has been so successful that the Queensland Government has introduced the service permanently. But the healthcare help a woman can get through a pharmacy is extensive. Services for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are in high demand with many pharmacies holding regular clinics. Menstrual disorders, including menstrual pain, irregular periods and heavy or unusual bleeding, is also an important area where pharmacists can provide advice and services.

Dr Tim Craven Meet our new GP: Sunshine Coast local, Dr Craven has special interests in sports medicine, skin checks and chronic diseases.

It’s not about perfection; it’s all about expression, that’s the purpose of creativity. We all have creativity within us and using it helps give our life more meaning and happiness.Thefirststep is to identify what you’re interested in, begin exploring and uncovering what you enjoy. Some of you might choose to write, bake, interior design, build, floral design, do photography, or garden, the choices are endless.Doa search on Google for “hobbies” and discover seemingly never-ending options. Once you find something, or decide to go back to what you have enjoyed before, you now need to make time for it. It may move and vary but beginning is a must.

Dr Talisha Condon With a keen interest in children’s, women’s and preventative health, Dr Condon has been an asset to the practice since joining us in March.

This year Women’s Health Week is being held from 5-11 September 2022 and is a reminder for women to set aside time for their health and wellbeing.

Whichever the case, creativity is an abundance of delight for our souls and our life is far more delightful with it.

Community pharmacies are also a welcome source of advice for women during menopause, with each woman’s experience of this phase of their life beingSexualunique.health is critical and community pharmacies are increasingly being accessed by women seeking advice on the best form of contraception for their needs and also treatment options where disorders or disease may be an issue. Bone density testing is another important service and while not specific to women, osteoporosis is more likely to affect women than men. In women, bone loss starts at an earlier age and can also be affected during pregnancy.

Sometimes your creativeness will purely be for enjoyment and pleasure, but other times our soul’s intention will come through our engagement.

It’s all about expressing ourselves and having the freedom to play, to let go and see where it all takes you. It’s a beautiful unveiling of our image through inspired expression.Creativity opens our heart and allows us to express what lives within us. It improves our overall health and well being and aids our mental health, anxiety, and combats sleeplessness. It has also been known to reduce dementia, depression and help cope with isolation and loneliness. Being creative opens the door to new possibilities and your life will become a playground again.

Finally, and critically, women should know that a pharmacist will always refer them to their GP for further consultations or treatment when necessary. Community pharmacists and GPs work closely together in the interests of patients and your pharmacist will not hesitate to refer or consult with your GP when necessary.

If you’re feeling lost or your smile has vanished I encourage you to get going and get creating - you’ll feel wonderfully alive again.

Creativity for so many of us is one of the most beautiful things that happened during the global disruption. A lot of people used their time very well and sought solace through creativity. It’s so good for our souls to use our imagination and create in some way.

Each week the group members explore a new and interesting topic and the sessions are structured in a way that encourages open discussion, sharing stories and ideas, and creating meaningful connections with others.

So please only put grass clippings, small branches and twigs, leaves, weeds, garden prunings and old flowers in your garden bin. And recycle right Sunshine Coast! Together, we can get waste sorted for a cleaner, greener and sustainable Sunshine Coast. Learn more on Council’s website. Flying fox season is here It’s birthing season for flying foxes. Time for the females to give birth to one live pup and raise it. This means their numbers in parks and reserves near the coastline may grow, and it’ll get nosier as the young get older and call for their mums. Rest assured, this won’t last forever. Flying foxes are seasonal animals that come and go. Search ‘flying foxes’ on Council’s website for tips on living near flying foxes.

The person who relayed this information to me had just climbed a 95 metre tall Mountain Ash Tree in those forests, with members of the Wilderness Society. To put this in perspective, the tallest tree that I have climbed in my 26 year career as an arborist was the recently deceased Norfolk island pine, Araucaria heterophylla, behind the Maleny credit union. It was 48 metres tall and I used to climb it to put the Christmas star at the top. These Mountain Ash Trees are the tallest flowering trees in the world. In the world! My son and his partner are expecting twins in October. If we don’t stop this logging now we are collectively stealing this treasure from the next generation. Apparently the logging industry there is losing money and is only operating because of government subsidies. This is government subsidised criminal insanity. There are even more appalling facts about this situation, but space doesn’t permit me to detail them, like leaving the logs of the biggest trees to be burnt because they are too big for the equipment to handle!? My first reaction on hearing this new information was to donate as much money as I could afford to the Bob Brown Foundation. I fervently hope that anyone reading this column who has money, power, or influence can do something to help avert this tragedy before it is too late.

You can grow your own mulch and soil improvers, in fact in the long term this is the only solution to creating sustainable and regenerating soils and reduce dependency on fertilisers and mulches from external sources.

BACK TO NATURE

Native plants that are great for soil improvement include our native Hibiscus spp, Rainforest pioneers like Pipturus, Homalanthus, Macaranga and of course our legumes (who have the bonus ability if adding nitrogen to the soil) such as Acacia spp, Pultenaea spp, Hovea spp, Oxylobium spp, and many more. Diversify your orchard and vegie patch by incorporating these plants into your plantings and, if managed, they will provide shade and protection from the intense summer sun, strong winds, provide habitat for pest controlling birds and insects and when pruned – mulch.

Landline:

Forest Heart Local Native Plant Nursery

In the case of the Hibiscus and many of the legumes you also get the added benefit of their beautiful flowers. Managing these plants is a simple as going for a stroll with your secateurs, hand saw or whatever cutting implements strikes your fancy and pruning to the desired shape that provides shade and protection to your food bearing plants and all the pruning’s are dropped where required to provide an in-situ mulch source, a permaculture term for this is “chop and drop”.

As I left the site by torchlight, I was startled by a short session of the bird’s staccato, chuckling call – like deranged laughter. This was followed by a quieter, “wup! wup!”. That could have been a Barking Owl (an unexpected bonus) but it was probably a little more Nightjar music. I will never know. In the bush and in our backyards at night, we hear far more than we see. Many of us know the loud, White-throated Nightjar perched along a branch - image Vince Lee Bush Stone-curlew - image Vince Lee

Sometimes, we should just clear our minds

Mobile: 0403 467 664 54 944 Iwww.twtreesurgeon.com917 first became aware of the environmental issues facing us back in 1986, when I was walking through the central highlands of Tasmania, through beautiful King Billy Pine - Athrotaxis selagenoides forest, and I learnt that the next valley over, with the same forests, was being clear felled and turned into woodchip to be sold overseas for $12 per tonne.

Twinkling silhouettes of microbats flitted over, under a pale, cloud-free sky. Birdsong had suddenly stopped; replaced by a profound hush as the last light faded. It was by chance, as I was looking at a high branch, that I saw the White-throated Nightjar appear to fall off it and swoop away with grace and control, like a darkwinged hawk. It returned to perform another sweeping arc, before being lost in enveloping darkness. Nightjars are mysteries to most of us. Active only in the dark hours, by day they rest belly tight to the ground – their plumage colours a perfect fit against leaf mould, dead twigs and earth – or along (never across) a tree branch so that their camouflage makes them look like part of the branch itself. extravagant arguments between Possums or Bandicoots, but there are also the tantalising, soft scurries and scuttles of smaller mammals. They are frequent in my own garden, but I recently made a revealing discovery in my wheelbarrow. I had filled it with grevillea and hakea prunings, put it under cover and forgotten it for a month. When I came to use it again, I discovered it had become a dry, daytime refuge for three little Grassland Melomys. I guessed that my chances of ever seeing these nocturnal creatures would have been slim, if it hadn’t been for an accident of neglect. And it’s not just in the country that wildlife is active after dark. In the centre of Brisbane, an hour after nightfall, my wife and I watched a Bush Stonecurlew stepping silently between café chairs and table legs. Possibly seeking dropped food morsels, it moved surreptitiously, standing frozen when people turned with an uncertain, “What was that?” look on their faces; moving again when the diners settled back to their conversations.Thefollowing day, we found four of these birds standing stock still and cryptic against the mulch of a botanical gardens flower bed. At night they must be all over the city and I wondered how many residents and visitors, numbed by traffic and other ambient sounds, ever notice the nocturnal wails and shrieks of the bird many still call the Willaroo. When I was a child in England, I frequently lay awake, listening to the noises of the night; the wind, rain on the window, the hoot of an owl, the scream of a vixen. I was never afraid; there was no cause. There is so much to know and experience outside our back doors or, perhaps, in that walk back home in the dark.

In the Wild We all know that mulch is great for creating and building soils, and the majority of conventional mulches are ones we have to source from elsewhere … But what if you could grow your own mulch? Sometimes we grow our own mulch and just throw it away in the bin! All plants naturally produce mulch as they shed, leaves, stem, bark, branches and eventually themselves as they die and decompose. Plants through their shade, organic matter and their symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi, enrich the soil for future generations of plants (and everything else – including ourselves!). We can manage this process for our own benefit by planting and working with fast-growing plants that provide mulch through their natural leaf fall or through pruning and lopping.

This forest wasn’t just any forest, this was one of the most beautiful places I had been to in my entire life. My disbelief on learning this information was palpable.Imagine my horror, when last weekend I learnt that the Mountain Ash, Eucalyptus regnans, forests in the southern part of Tasmania, with even more magnificent specimens, is still being logged today, 36 years later. Have we learnt nothing?

Australia has a great range of native plants tried and tested by Indigenous Australians over the millennia, it’s time for us to incorporate these into our amenity gardens, orchards and vegetable gardens. Check out the great range at Forest Heart to grow your own mulch.

There are few harder conversations to have in terms of conservation than the one about pets. Many Australian households have beloved domestic pets, particularly cats and dogs, including my own. But it is something that crops up again and again – in my own experience rescuing animals, as well as when communicating with fellow organisations and carers.

It’s not uncommon to run into a fledgling on the ground at this time of year. However, in many cases these birds are being supervised by their parents and it is part of their normal process of learning how to fly. In some instances, however, this may be an injured or endangered baby bird who genuinely needs help. Here are a few general guidelines for whether a juvenile bird needs assistance so you can help a chick in need, but don’t potentially impact the development of a healthy fledgling who isn’t in need of rescue at all by taking them away from their environment and their parents, who may simply have fled at your approach.

If a young bird has its flight feathers, it’s a fledgling and is perfectly capable of looking after itself if it is healthy. What you’ll want to look for are signs of responsiveness. If the bird is calling or making noises, actively moving around, capable of spreading its wings or perching then it’s probably fine.

If you pick it up and it can balance on your finger, or flutters to the ground instead of just falling, then it’s still just learning to fly but has the capacity to control its wings and is uninjured In this case the bird should be reunited with its parents – they can teach it to survive and thrive where a human cannot.

Note the location it was rescued from as precisely as you can – parents can and will take in chicks who have been rescued and returned, they do not simply abandon them as soon as they’ve been lost or come into human Hopefullycontact.wewill have plenty of healthy young birds to see as the seasons turn this year!

A nestling is a bird that is definitely too young to have left the nest. If a bird has no feathers, only fluffy down, this is a nestling and needs assistance immediately. This can be relatively inexpensive and can be created by using repurposed bathtubs, old children’s wading pools, or even small bowls or dishes. Be sure to place the frog pond in partial shade to provide a mixture of sun and shade, and remember to provide shelter for protection from potential predators. This month I have sadly received numerous caSpring’s coming up soon! One of the biggest signals of the season coming around is all the birdsong starting up again. Along with the adults, we now have baby birds who’ve been growing through the winter preparing to leave their nest for the first time.

Watch out for wildlife by Wildlife Carer RACHEL ASPINALL

Place the bird somewhere off the ground –a branch on a low tree or bush, and retreat to a distance to watch and see if its parents return to it now that you’re not at a threatening proximity. Another option is to place it in a bucket with some drainage holes cut in it for a safe place from predators until its parents come for it. The biggest danger to young birds is roaming domestic animals and this may give it a better chance to avoid notice or capture. However, if the bird is unresponsive, sluggish or unable to open its wings properly, it may have fallen by accident and be injured or ill, in which case taking it to a vet or other form of care is the right call in order to make sure it has the best chance of survival.

"Mark and Margy successfully broke our preconceived ideas of typical real estate people. They were genuinely warm and friendly, professional and never pushy. We couldn't recommend them more highly." Robyn & Shane (Montville)Jude (Montville) Mark was exceptional in his commitment to getting us the right buyers, at a price that was above our expectations. We found him trustworthy, generous with his advertising, and willing to put an impressive effort into marketing a challenging sale.

Robyn & Jim (Reesville) If you're looking for a reliable, professional, personable real estate agency then look no further than Mark and his team. They communicated with us right through to the sale and got us a great sales price. We recently bought and sold with Blackall Range Real Estate and we're very happy with the results. Their professionalism and goodhumoured support through a stressful time was much appreciated. Highly recommended! David & Jo (Maleny)
