For BGCitizens, Keeping BGC Clean is shared responsibility WRITER KRYZETTE PAPAGAYO
The hustle and bustle of Bonifacio Global City offers opportunities of an affluent lifestyle. The concrete expanse and high-rise buildings are much like its dwellers—busy and always engaged. Allowing this are common upkeeps designed to monitor the city’s waste management. For such maintenance, residents, tenants, and visitors are presented with equal responsibility along with the perks of a cosmopolitan lifestyle. To encourage individuals to preserve the city’s cleanliness, Ordinance 13-017 or the Barangay Anti-littering Ordinance, made effective on November 14, 2016, solidified the waste management system of BGC. It prohibits littering in all forms in various areas in the city, including vacant lots, drainages, tree planters, roads, and sidewalks, among others. The ordinance has also appointed Green Cops who are in charge of apprehending individuals not following the memorandum. Yielding discipline in the BGC area, the Environmental Officers are authorized to dispense violation tickets and educate citizens. #BagtheButt, a campaign urging BGCitizens to look after their cigarette wastes, has decreased 70,000 pieces of cigarette butt collection weekly since the Green Cops started routing the area. Working together to maintain the city, a clean-up drive was held last October 15, 2016. In an hour, 324 bags of trash, each weighing a minimum of 5 kgs, composing of cigarette butts, plastic wrappers, soda cans, and bottles were collected. Together with this, signages were installed around the area as general guidelines. Keeping BGC Clean is a shared responsibility to everyone living, working, and visiting Bonifacio Global City. More than beautifying the city, proper waste management and regular efforts by the citizens can help make BGC sustainable for years to come. With full cooperation of all citizens, BGC is set to become a more conducive place for work, life, and play.
