here are many things I love about Hippocrates, but one of the most impressive is the way it is forever improving the way it helps people. ur bodies are the most magnificent vessels ever created. Not only do they contain life-giving blood cells, they also possess the electric pulses that allow them to move through our system, bringing new cells to replenish and rebuild our organs and the bones of our skeletal system. At the same time, our bodies flush out used and weakened cells, making room for fresh anatomy. Our brains’ neurons send messages to all parts of our bodies, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Reciprocally, the neurons throughout our nervous systems project messages from their area of the body, allowing the brain to know how they feel about things. Maybe it’s hot, maybe it’s cold, or maybe it’s painful. Our emotions and our spirit reside in this integral gathering of genius, adding depth, texture, and nuance to the biochemical system. Every thought, emotion, and act is an orchestrated event that symbiotically creates the experience of being alive. Somehow, we reside in this impressive vehicle and do not acknowledge, accept, or partner with it. Who we literally are seems not to be important to most of us, who are allowing our ego and consumptive attitudes to govern our fate. Embracing our physique and harmonizing with it rewards us with abundant health, happiness, and heavenly awareness. On a daily basis here at the Institute, we have the privilege to observe people becoming familiar with, accepting, and befriending their bodies. When we reveal that even the deepest wound has the ability to heal, people then recognize that the body’s self-healing capacity is boundless. We have now institutionalized our knowledge of our mechanical selves and turned it over to “health care” professionals. Like goldfish in a bowl, it’s all about observation and not implementation. Kind acts of love, nourishment, recreation, and consciousness all personally pursued advance the inherent healing mechanisms that nature and the universe provide. We now seem to put extraordinary effort into doing the very things that our forebears did naturally. Eating simple and pure is difficult for most since our habitual patterns of substance addiction lead us astray. Enhancing and strengthening the anatomy with movement and exercise is rarely conducted well and looked at as an exceptional effort. Calm, controlled, and peaceful relationships, work, and social pursuits are a precious commodity and are infrequently experienced. This triune of body, exercise, and “emospirit” should be our main focus, so that not only will we become comfortable with each of their powerful gifts, but also understand that the speed of aging, quality of health, and the elation in being alive are all dependent upon it. Remember, you are the master of self. There is no excuse for not employing your best effort in establishing a joyous, fruitful, and contributory life. ippocrates Health Institute saved my life and I am forever grateful. When I first arrived in February 2016, my health was in a state of emergency. In July 2015, I decided to approach my doctor about having a colonoscopy. He referred me to a gastroenterologist who found two large polyps in my colon during the procedure. He sent the biopsy down to the lab and wanted to schedule an appointment for me to have the polyps removed. Several days later, he called me to deliver the most terrifying and shocking news of my life: “You have colon cancer.” I felt my heart stop. He went on to say that I needed surgery right away and made me an appointment with the surgeon the following day. I asked the gastroenterologist, what he thought caused this cancer, considering it does not run in my family. He said it could be caused by several things—poor diet, stress and lack of exercise. I had allowed fear, stress, toxic relationships and bad eating habits to inflict the ultimate damage to my overall health. That night, I prayed like never before. I asked God to direct my path. I woke up the next morning with an answer: “Do your research. If you continue this path, you will truly die.” At that moment, I remembered my body is designed to heal itself when given the right medicine: food. I scoured the internet looking for ways of self-healing without surgery. I told a friend that I was not going to subject myself to surgery, that I needed to heal the cause of my disease first, and she told me about this place called Hippocrates Health Institute. She knew individuals who had gone there and been successful in self-healing.

I immediately began researching Hippocrates, and was amazed at what I found. I watched YouTube videos of Brian Clement lecturing on living foods, and Ann Wigmore reversing her colon cancer through wheatgrass. I realized I needed to work with people who could support me spiritually, nutritionally and physically to help bring balance back to my body. I knew I would have to change my lifestyle to reverse cancer in my body. I would have to eliminate stress and bad diet, and change my negative, doubtful thought process into positive, loving thinking. When I informed my precious sons that I would not consider traditional medical treatment, they had fear in their eyes. I understood, but I could feel their love giving me strength. It made me fearless to take a journey I had never considered before. I chose to live. At Hippocrates Health Institute, I learned how to get rid of stress by making peace with myself. Recently, I read that people with different blood types benefit from different diets. Some are healthy as vegans, but others need lean meats to feel their best. Is there any truth to this? The “blood type diet,” propagated by Dr. D’adamo, has risen in popularity as of late. We at the Institute, alongside decades of scientific studies, have disproven its effectiveness. Over the last six decades, we have established a clean and proven program for all. Take Anna Maria, Dr. Gabriel Cousins and I, for example. We all have Type O blood— supposedly the category that requires animal flesh for optimal nourishment. Yet, all of us have flourished and thrived for a combined 140 years on our nutrition-rich, environmentally sound and spectacularly healthy lifestyle. The naturopath I have been seeing has recently retired. My new physician is now suggesting a statin for my cholesterol and heart issues. Can I take a supplement instead? Although there is a time and place for statins, cardiologists who observe patients on such medications over long periods are usually unimpressed by the results. Along with the Hippocrates diet, I recommend—under the auspices of a healthcare professional—taking Red Yeast Rice and Capsicum tincture. Red Yeast Rice is the central ingredient in statins, and Capsicum is a medicinal extract from cayenne. This has helped countless people in their quest for cardiovascular health.
I am allergic to wheat, barley, corn, rice, teff and hemp. Is Wheatgrass juice safe for me? I am aware of the benefits, but I’m worried I’ll have a reaction. It is most likely safe for you. When germinating, wheat glutens convert to amino acids, which almost universally irradiates the allergens that are likely causing problems for you. Some people who are still concerned grow barley grass instead, producing less allergenic results.
What would you say is the best water to drink if you’re traveling and can’t carry your own distilled water, such as on airplanes? When you can, purchase SmartWater. It’s contained in a higher-quality plastic bottle, it is distilled water, and it has ionically charged electrolytes. If there’s one in the area you’re traveling in, purchase a glass bottle of distilled water from a pharmaceutical house.
Since I was previously a smoker, I’m doing everything I can to repair the damage, including taking infrared saunas three times per week. Are there supplements that specifically promote healing in the lungs? What else can I do? As Duke University research revealed, it takes 17 years for a reformed smoker to be released from the shackles of potential disease. Infrared saunas are essential to your healing, but I suggest you take them more often; for reference, I take saunas 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This should be in combination with fluid consumption. Drink half your body weight in ounces— that is, a 120-pound person should drink 60 ounces of water—each day. Add drops of glutathione and essential oils and run it in the room where you sleep. All of this will help you more quickly release the noxious waste your previous habit has created.

Elle sat down with me recently and discussed health, beauty, business and motherhood. What is the most important part of well-being? Good life balance, for me, is key to my well-being. I know if I take good care of myself, everything else in life will fall into place. I am a mother first and businesswoman second. or more than 60 years, we have been teaching worldwide about the connection between excess protein and sugar and the proliferation of cancer. Of course, it’s also our chemicaland heavy metal-saturated world that caused this disease to supersede heart maladies as the No. 1 killer. Recent findings from MIT verify our concerns, and the international science landscape has revealed the war has been lost. As we know, RNA is the building block for DNA. Musashi proteins bond the RNA, preventing proper foundation for the DNA. The work done in Boston on tumor biology highlights that excess protein, certainly from animal-based

foods, in coordination with all forms of sugar, including fructose, establishes the epicenter for mutation to occur. Lead author of the study, Yardin Katz, stated, “RNA is processed at several places within the cell and this gives opportunities for RNA-binding proteins to regulate RNA at each point. We’re very interested in trying to understand this class of proteins and how they regulate cell-state transitions” (tumors). Across six decades of clinical observations, we’ve noticed that the removal of complex proteins and the absence of all forms of sugar work as a springboard, allowing the body’s immunity to fully engage in its attack on cancer cells. Unfortunately, current

mainstream protocols weaken and destroy the immune system cells, leaving the patient in a weakened state, literally fighting both the disease and the treatment. Recent studies reported in Natural Health 365 highlight that only 2.1 percent of people survive after having chemotherapy administered as their main treatment after five years. Britain’s Public Health England and Cancer Research UK reported that chemotherapy drugs kill half of the patients that take them within the first 30 days. There seems to be mounting evidence of the sources’ impetus and treatments of cancer failing us. There needs to be a fresh set of eyes objectively placed on the
treatments, so the scientific community can rethink the current state of affairs. Guy Faguet, MD reported in an Australian journal that in his home country, the survival rate after chemo is only 2.3 percent after five years. When one analyzes patients who either opted out or were advised by their physicians not to undergo this form of nuclear medicine, there were better outcomes and less mortality. A study on the chemeurope website described the genesis of all cancers in connection with epigenetics. Lifestyle is central in the prevention and reversal of this disease. Professor Graeme Morgan, radiation oncologist; Robyn Ward, medical oncologist; and Dr. Michael

Barton, radiation oncologist, collaborated at the Royal North Shore hospital in Sydney, resulting in a meta-study analysis that provoked their statement that chemotherapy was, in fact, statistically shown to be ineffective in the overwhelming majority of cases. Today, it is widely accepted that a positive attitude, a clean, plant-based diet and consistent productive movement and exercise work together to prevent and even reverse mutagenic disease. Although one cannot state that there is never a time or place to intervene with nuclear medicine, global research is slowly disassembling the ironclad control of these procedures. Educated patients are challenging the status quo
and demanding honest and transparent evaluations of any and all suggested treatments. In the four decades I have worked in the field of natural health care, I’ve observed a healthy lifestyle as central to the prevention and recovery of a wide variety of maladies. Humans have a peculiar tendency to treat themselves worse than they treat those around them. What will it take for you to take care of you?
W
hen you look in the mirror, are you comfortable with what you see? Are love handles protruding from your sides? Does it look like you have a sack of potatoes in your rear? Does your belly resemble St. Nick’s? If so, your mind will be going in one of two directions: sad or challenged. When uncomfortable in your own skin, there is a gnawing perpetual presence of discord that prevents the state of joy that you should be in. In my youth, I carried a bombastic burden of excessive weight. As a man, I was able to justify it as being “big and bold.” However, my broken heart knew it was an unacceptable disorder. Women I knew who weighed half of what I did were called an assorted list of names nobody would like to own. Culturally, our societies portrayed young, thin, and sexy bodies as the epitome of desire. With more than half of us overweight, there is a groundswell of sadness that pervades humanity. What will it take for you to revisit that mirror and create the Bod that would make you happy? “Lots of work” is the answer. Are you up for it, or will you be sitting on the sidelines

Unfortunately, weight-loss programs and fitness industry advocates believe diets and exercise fix the problem. Millions of times throughout history, this hypothesis has been disproved. What it takes to become strong, limber, lean and well is a change in attitude. Your mind is your best buddy or your greatest saboteur. Before you change, you have to be thoroughly disgusted with your current state and willing to take the needed steps forward without hesitation. Since 1956, we have been supporting people in the process of regaining their lives. Of course, your body is the vehicle you are captured within during the short time you spend on Earth. You do not want to have a roommate that you are constantly fighting. How do you make friends with yourself since your normal routine is to beat yourself up? Do you deeply believe that you deserve to live in a happy state? Or do you remember as a child being surrounded by discord? Did you observe your mother, father, and siblings on the track of self-destruction and consider it normal? Have you recognized that you are addicted to “foods”
and patterns of self-loathing? To become clean, you have to be willing to humbly acknowledge the cracks in your façade. Once you have done so, you need to mix the cement to re-create the wholeness that you deserve. So far, we have discussed those who carry the burden of excess weight; how about people who feel weak, small in stature and lacking energy? Our minds are so central to either circumstance and require similar resolve. Anorexia and bulimia grip millions of people globally. These are the extremes of self-image disorders. When wanting to lose pounds or gain weight, the same process of resistance exercise is required. As we want more elastic movement and exuberant energy, it requires aerobic activity. Calories are now a concern of the past. The implementation of body resculpting must focus on the energy of the food, how clean and unpolluting it is, as well as the nutritional magnificence it contains. As nomads, we ate infrequently and always nutritionally. Our bodies, which are like our own babies, consistently moved and developed musculature, detoxification, anatomical strengthening and
psychological and spiritual balance. You would never think of abusing that infant, yet you are a world-class expert on doing that to yourself. Compare the diet of half a century ago to the present. We consume double the food by weight. You do not have to be a scientist to recognize this; just look around you on the streets, at home and in our schools. Seventy-two percent of our children, and similarly in Western Europe, are overweight, obese, or morbidly obese. Teenage girls and boys commonly starve themselves to look like the hottest artists of the day. “Fast Food Cyber Living” has displaced outdoor activities and family meals. For you to achieve your goal of residing in a user-friendly body, you have to make peace with the demons inside your mind, heart, and soul. Internal conflict has to be replaced with positive affirmations. Perpetual computer and cellphone use has to be minimized so social and physical activity become the mainstay once again. Food has to be viewed as fuel and not a reward or crutch. You have to replace your old Bod with the new Bod you are willing to carve into creation.

Jordan Drane is the man behind Conscious
Muscle. He has been a personal trainer in West Palm Beach for over 10 years, yet he says the day his life and health really turned around was four years ago, when he adopted the vegan lifestyle. “My regret is not going vegan a lot sooner,” he says. He’s pleased to have helped transform the lives of hundreds of people so far. “The thrill for me is when a
non-vegan wants to give it a try.” He says. “Not only do they transition to a vegan diet, but they start getting in amazing shape. It shows that it’s possible.” Jordan’s social media and online program are incredibly popular. In fact, @Conscious_Muscle is listed as the No. 1 vegan body builder on Instagram. “I’ve built quite an audience through showing people that their gains don’t have to be an animal’s loss,” he says.
When did you first decide to adopt the vegan lifestyle?
What’s one thing that surprises your clients?
I feel that I’m as successful as I am because of my passion for what I’m doing. It’s literally my life’s work, promoting a plant-based lifestyle, having an animal sanctuary, and contributing to the animal rights movement. I couldn’t ask for more. So if there’s anything I attribute to my success, it’s finding veganism.

What do you do for fun?
An amazing lady by the name of Susan convinced me. She and her husband Jon were personal training clients of mine, and after she went to vegan she tried her best to convince us to do the same. I did my research and found out the cruelty that eating meat entails and the detrimental effects on us and our planet. It really hit me after watching “Forks over Knives” and “Earthlings.” Going vegan made sense from a health standpoint.
Did you notice any changes after cutting out meat?
I had more energy and recovered from workouts more quickly. I had mental clarity, and my bloodwork phenomenally improved. My doctor was amazed and surprised. I applied all my knowledge to promoting a plant-based lifestyle and never looked back.
What’s your message to meat eaters?
I wish they knew the cruelty and suffering that factory farming and modern agriculture entails. A plant-based diet is the best thing for your health and your family—you have no idea what you’re putting into your children’s bodies. You can get protein, vitamins, minerals and everything else you need from a plant-based diet, without all of the carcinogens, cholesterol and cruelty associated with meat.
What about vegetarians? What is your message?
There are alternatives to dairy. There are nut milks and plantbased cheese alternatives that are delicious and healthy without the acidic and carcinogenic nature of dairy. The dairy industry is cruel. Animals are kept alive and in extreme suffering, being deprived of the right to even move, shackled and standing in their own filth. Plus, with dairy, females are forcefully impregnated so they continue to produce milk. People have a misconception that cows are constantly in a state of milk production, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Shortly after birth, their calves are sent to veal farms to be slaughtered for meat. I would just ask that you take this into consideration.
The amount they can eat while still losing body fat. I’m a proponent of “sustainable eating,” which is ensuring you are fueled for lean muscle mass while still shedding body fat.
What do you love most about your job?
Taking somebody from an animal-based diet to not only becoming vegan, but showing them amazing results. It’s a no-brainer, and it makes the transition really easy.
Which celebrity would you most love to train? Leonardo DiCaprio. He speaks out on the sustainability of our planet and investing in plantbased meat substitutes. If he were to go vegan, it would be amazing. I would do my best to convince him.
What does it take for your program to work for others? It just takes a willingness to change. You have to be ready for progress and you have to be ready to do your part. I give you a foundation to follow with both your nutrition and training for the most optimal results. Simply put, it only works if you work it.
I spend time with my daughters, or outdoors at the sanctuary with all the critters. I lift weights and I take any opportunity to laugh and get into shenanigans with friends.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
What is your personal philosophy for success?
The best definition of success I have ever heard is from Earl Nightingale: “success is the progressive realization of a worthwhile goal or ideal.” Simply meaning if you are living in line with what matters most to you and taking steps towards that daily you are indeed a successful person.
I see myself traveling the world talking about veganism while doing big things in the animal-rights arena.
If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be?
It would be my stepfather Terrell. He came into my life when I was young, and I credit him for sending me on a positive path in life. I would love to catch up with him and let him know where my life has gone and what I’m about. I think he’d be proud.

FROM SICKNESS TO SUCCESS Battling weight and yo-yo dieting doesn’t have to be your way of life.
I
looked at the clock in the recovery room in April 2013, just barely able to keep my heavy eyelids open. The time said 1:30 p.m. That was odd; my doctor said the surgery wouldn’t take longer than a few hours, and I was the first case of the day. I worried the medical team had to “open me up” to remove the canteloupe-sized uterine fibroid instead of the less invasive da Vinci myomectomy I had hoped for. It turns out my surgery was big, bloody and complicated. My doctor did not have to open me up. However, I did spend several nights in the hospital recovering from what turned out to be the removal of not one, but many fibroids through four abdominal incisions. I lost so much blood I almost needed a transfusion. I remember trying to stand for the first time post-surgery and watching blood gush down my leg. After I was discharged, I read everything I could get my hands on pertaining to female reproductive health. I learned that there is a direct connection between animal protein and toxicity, which leads to tumor growth. I transitioned to a vegan diet that year and never looked back. Prior to becoming vegan, I had tried every weight-loss gimmick out there. I was a chronic yo-yo dieter from the time I was a child. When I was in high school, I even did Slim Fast. I would stick with it a few days and then go on a binge-eating spree. In college, I would stay up late and indulge in late-night pizza slices and bagel bites. My weight ballooned out of control. I gained the freshman 15 and then some. Upon graduation, I embarked on my career in journalism. I had the television camera to inform me when my weight got too crazy. But the erratic hours and constant deadline pressure did not help my health journey. I would eat an entire box of macaroni and cheese at 2 a.m. when my shift ended.
| B Y AMY SZUTOWICZ | Leading up to surgery, I followed a “high-protein, low-carb” diet. And while I lost weight, I also felt terrible eating so much animal protein. My health was on a terrifying roller coaster. I would binge on unhealthy food at my lowest point and then starve myself to reach an unrealistic goal. I repeated this pattern over and over again. When I left news and went back to school for healthcare, the camera no longer watched my weight. I reached an all-time high. After seeing my vacation pictures, I knew something had to change. That was when I began a “high-protein, low-carb” diet, along with a consistent workout schedule. Producers of a home workout program saw my results and invited me to be in their next video series. I flew to California to participate and later appeared on HSN to promote the series. Not long after that, I ran my first half-marathon. I was never an athletic person— in fact I was always chosen last in gym class and frequently bullied because of my weight—so this was a huge accomplishment for me.
With all of that, I knew something was off. Running was painful, and I could feel pressure in my side. Several weeks later, I had the myomectomy and swore I would do whatever it took to avoid similar procedures in the future. For me, that meant going vegan. As I slimmed down and looked more vibrant, people wanted to know what I was doing, which is why I decided to change fields once again. I completed my personal training certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, so I could help others achieve optimal health. I ran many more half-marathons and even a full marathon as a vegan. I decided another way I could raise awareness for veganism was through competitive bodybuilding. In 2017, I entered two shows in the bikini division. At my second show, I came in first place, becoming an OCB Masters Bikini Pro. I beat many meat-eating competitors to win that title! However, I am most proud of the number of competitors who inquired about being a vegan when they saw my “Vegan Athlete” robe. I believe many myths were shattered that day. I support the mission of Hippocrates Health Institute because we truly are what we eat. I enjoy visiting the campus and attending events to show others they can achieve their health and fitness goals through veganism. When you are a wholefoods vegan, weight is not an issue. When you’re healthy on the inside, it shows on the outside. I never thought I could achieve this body as a 44-year-old woman. I look better now than I did in my 20s! o matter where we are with our health, we can always get better. We can lose weight, feel terrific, eat more, sleep better, and be energized with no notion of a lotion or a potion. And this can be done easily. Unless you’ve stayed in the hospital, I bet you never knew there were so many kinds of physicians—cardiologists, endocrinologists and pathologists, to name a few. One function of a pathologist in particular is to study the history and evolution of disease. When we abuse ourselves for long periods of time, we get little “stings” in the form of headaches, colds, bad breath, low energy, bad nerves and insomnia. When we continue this abuse, we look for something to make us better, instead of wondering what in the world we are doing that’s making us sick. Then we get a bigger sting. Eventually, we really get stung and can wind up with cancer, heart disease, diabetes or strokes, thinking we inherited them. I myself was chairman of the board of that mindset for years. I was a sick, fat, miserable, unhealthy kid, and thought being healthy was something for the select few (or you were just born into it).

STAGES OF DISEASE Well, now is the time for us to understand how disease forms over time. These are the six stages of pathology in a nutshell: ENERVATION. In this stage, you’ll just feel tired and irritable. You need more sleep, you get more colds and you may wonder why you’re suffering from bad breath, gas and constipation. You probably also find yourself with a short temper because your nerves are shot. 2. IRRITATION. Your physical body is beginning to reflect your health. You may suffer from sore joints, rapid heart rate and migranes or severe headaches. 3. INFLAMMATION. This is often your body’s first line of defense against allergens and disease. You’ll have red sores around cuts, pimples, shortness of breath, fever and inflamed areas around the kidneys, lungs and liver. 1.
4. ULCERATION. Ulcers will appear in the stomach, lungs, liver and other organs. You’ll also be dealing with a lot of pus and boils. 5. INDURATION. By this point, hormonal glands are barely active. You’ll be suffering from the formation of fibroid tissues, as well as poor arterial blood flow, senility and tumors. 6. FUNGATION. This is where life is hanging by a thread. The intelligence of the cell, the DNA, has lost control and can no longer guide cellular function.

THE GOOD NEWS Diagnosis defines conditions of a disease. Prognosis defines the chances of survival. Prognoses of stage four is usually terminal. The good news is that at every stage, disease is still reversible. Since we are all healthy by design and sick by default, it stands to reason that we want to be well and it would be good to stop making ourselves sick. But we need
to want health in a special way, because we only pursue what we want when the want is greater than the effort. All success starts with a beginning. Everyone who got where they are had to begin where they were. Opportunities are all around you. Develop tendencies toward action. Break your big plan into small steps and take the first step right away. You can make
something happen right now. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Take one. We all know that what you do from Christmas to New Year’s doesn’t matter that much, but what we do from New Year’s to Christmas really matters. Let go of perfection and settle for excellence, knowing that excellence is no accident.

e all love to eat. Enjoying food beyond simple sustenance is normal. It becomes problematic, however, when we overeat until there is a significant weight gain or health risk. When we eat without physical hunger cues, regularly choose unhealthy comfort foods, or eat when we’re already full, something is out of balance. Our bodies are equipped with a sophisticated signaling system designed to guide us to proper nutrition. The system informs us via hunger pangs that it’s time to eat and prods us with cravings to select the correct nutrients. It ensures we get enough calories and then signals when we’re full. Just like breathing, most of these processes occur without our awareness. If we don’t mess with the machinery too much, it works well for a lifetime. But in today’s hectic, fast-paced world, many of us are disconnected from our body signals. We’ve lost touch with our innate signaling system and often ignore, medicate or override the body’s messages. We’re living in poorly functioning bodies, coping with digestive problems, low energy, fatigue, and chronic inflammation. We may experience significant health warnings or develop degenerative conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

How have we become so blind to our body signals? A number of major factors contribute to this disconnection: • SOCIETAL PRESSURES: Cultural and family messages encouraged us to ignore body signals in an attempt to control our body size, leading to a destructive diet mentality. Obesity is on the rise because our diet is substantially different from our ancestors. FOOD ADDICTION: Modern drug-like foods activate pleasure centers in the brain, unbalance body and brain signals, and lead to addiction. Once we’re addicted, it takes a disciplined effort to tolerate the unpleasant process of detoxification and the reintroduction of less stimulating whole foods.

TO HELP REDUCE OVEREATING, RELEASE EXCESS WEIGHT, AND IMPROVE OVERALL HEALTH AND ENERGY 1.
DITCH THE DIET MENTALITY. In order to reconnect to your signals, practice eating when you truly feel hunger, stopping when you’re satiated, and allow yourself free choice of wholesome foods to satisfy cravings.
2. STAY GREEN. STAY CLEAN. Add unprocessed whole plant foods, especially fresh, raw vegetables, to your diet. Fiber helps move toxins out of the body and fills you up, making it easier to gently release the foods that are contributing to body and brain imbalance. 3. BUY ORGANIC. As much as possible, buy organically grown sprouts and vegetables to avoid toxins. 4. ELIMINATE SUGAR AND OILS. Read food labels and avoid processed foods and additives. 5. KEEP IT RAW. If you’re on either end of the spectrum, explore the reasons. 8. REST AND RECOVER. Plan more time for adequate sleep and periods of rest in your week. Your body needs rest to heal itself. Allow yourself to get the rest you need and wake without an alarm clock. 9. REDUCE STRESS. Identify major stressors in your life, including environmental toxins and traffic, and think about ways to reduce them. 10. GO EASY ON YOURSELF. Practice self-compassion daily. It will take time to resolve overeating. Try not to be a perfectionist. Access an inner supportive voice capable of soothing and comforting and reassuring you that your needs can be met.

I am a 78-year-old woman born with congenital conditions, primarily a spina bifida (L3-L5). That is a bifurcation of the spine, upper back scoliosis, unequal and unbalanced hips, leaving me with both of my legs misshaped, misaligned, and with two different lengths. Throughout life, I had to cope with a variety of body challenges, including excruciating pain and incapacitation. I know what it’s like to be confined to a space for prolonged periods of time, to be in a body cast, and use a wheelchair. I also have been blessed with a rewarding and interesting life. I say, ”not a journey endured, but a life well lived!” My body has always required high maintenance that grew with aging. When I was recently shoved on a staircase, I was able to prevent myself from going down head first, but it twisted my entire body, my lower back, my right side,

hip, knee, and ankle. I had a questionable hairline fracture to my right hip. I was in agony. My regular rehab techniques were excellent, but I needed something more, so I went searching. Neither my family doctor not the two orthopedic specialists I spoke with had worthwhile advice other than complimenting me on my achievements to date. Medication was suggested, but my body doesn’t tolerate it well. I knew I needed extra physical assistance, which forced me to think out of the box and find a way to help my body, take control of my life, and become functional again! The late Robert Kennedy came to mind. He said, “Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream things that never were and ask why not.” It makes my point—the impossible is possible if you believe in yourself and God. And I do! Crisis forces you to think out of the box. I was at a birthday party, saw balloons, and came up with the idea to use balloons as an aid in exercising and physical therapy. The balloons have served me well. With the balloons I created revolutionary safe, simple, sequential, and effective techniques/movements that could be done in a lying, sitting, or standing position. These

techniques not only upright the entire spinal column and neck but reinforce and strengthen the “core” of the body. These exercises are most complementary and compatible with the body. I credit the balloon programs I have created for helping me achieve the results I needed. A trademark application was filed, declaring me a “Balloonologist”; that is, the first person to use balloons for exercise, physical rehabilitation, and therapy. I also am in the midst of preparing a “Balloonology” marketing program. My goal is to demonstrate these specific exercises to the medical profession as I strongly believe many individuals could benefit from these exercises, particularly individuals who have compromised bodies, such as seniors, as well as many others who suffer from various congenital maladies like mine. I also believe individuals who sit for prolonged periods could benefit. We need to exercise to have healthy bodies. These exercises are easy to learn and can be done anywhere, anytime for a short period of time. Just remember to do them daily. Balloon exercises also create a state of “mindfulness,” as each movement requires total concentration so it creates relaxation, reducing stress and
anxiety. Individuals immediately feel the difference; they know “exercise is medicine!” This empowers individuals to take control of their bodies, minds, and destinies! Health is a well-planned journey. I have been told that I am a “miracle walker.” I am very pleased how I managed to aid my discombobulated body. I have had a rewarding, interesting, and accomplished life. Prior to becoming a full-time personal exercise coach, I had two previous professions; the last one being executive director for Canada for an International firm out of Kyoto, Japan. That was more than 40 years ago. I was a woman ahead of her time! I have been blessed with a wonderful daughter, four grandchildren, a great community and many friends. I am content with my life. I miss the good old days when I ate what I wanted. I have fond memories of holiday foods and candies from my youth. Sometimes I try to recapture that feeling and “fall off the wagon” to indulge. Trick-or-treating was so much fun—sorting and eating brightly-wrapped candy and swapping goodies with my friends! No worries, just pleasure. But later came tooth decay, stomachaches, diabetes and weakened immune function. Now, look at the adult who se ees the lurking g danger, g , the powe werr of the seduction, the lie be ene nea ath h the fantasy. Enter the ad dul u t who recognizes that today’ss pl p easure can lead to o too
morrow’s pain. That adult who always says “No!” That downer, no-fun parent who denies us pleasure for our own good. That “adult” who stimulates inner rebellion with rigid rules. Not much better, is it? My conclusion is this: when either a lost child or a rigid adult is in charge, damage or self-sabotage inevitably follows. I recommend pathway #3: the benevolent adult who creatively replaces antiquated, unhealthy habits with new, fun ways to do the old holiday rituals. Enter the artistic adult who makes new healthy foods to associate with the holidays. Keep the magic going—just be smart about it. I’ve been coming to the Institute for years, but I still feel skeptical about certain parts of the program at times. Is this the Doubting Thomas in me? Does it mean there’s a chance I’ll never commit 100 percent?
A
It means you haven’t yet answered all your questions. Because the Hippocrates program is so textured and complex, you probably won’t reach the end of your learning curve any time soon. Obviously you’ve got the gist of it, though. You likely return for several reasons, and these are my guesses as to why: One, you’re getting the results you want. Two, you love the atmosphere. Three, you appreciate the people, both guests and staff. Four, you feel inspired by the indivudual progress and spirit that you see. Jesus’s response to Doubting Thomas was, “come and touch my hands.” That means to me that it isn’t about punishing the doubters, but reassuring them. Explore more. Ask questions. Get to the root of things.

Real faith and commitment come from experience, from reaching a point of critical mass in your knowing. Keep educating yourself. The good news is that you can measure your progress on the path to health both subjectively and objectively. Critical mass is at hand!
You suggest spending therapy time not talking about differences, but rather discussing expectations of an improved relationship. Is it not important that we share why there are problems between us?

Yes, it is important to know what the major problems in your relationship are. In a solution- focused therapeutic approach, we can know the major issues affecting the relationship when you propose your ideal solutions to the problems. Each of your perspectives will be clear when you suggest your ideal solutions. There is a general principle that what your mind focuses on will begin to capture your energy. If you spend time on your disagreements and differ-

ences, they become the focus. In addition, many couples tend to prove why their point of view is right and the other person’s view is wrong. This process takes a major part of the therapy time. On the other hand, if we commonly think about solutions, our focus will be on resolving the differences, at least to a great extent. As a rule, in the solution-focused approach, I ask the couple to give six different suggestions each for an improved relationship and then begin to agree on common priorities. Couples also give six different compliments to each other in such a session. Using these suggestions and compliments, couples are helped to visualize their ideal relationship and life in a Guided Imagery/Creative Visualization Session and record them (along with each one’s compliments to each other) on a cellphone or other devices and reinforce their commitment to the improved relationships by playing back the recording in their bedroom. This may not be practical in every case; however, according to the feedback received, many of our couples have benefited from this approach.

Pierre, tell us how Hippocrates Weight Loss Academy came about.
P
I was in the marine transportation and construction business for over 20 years, and my weight fluctuated all my life. I’d be in the yo-yo cycle of gaining, then losing, then gaining it all back and a few extra pounds. One night in 2011 I went to bed and my heart went crazy on me. The doctors said it was stress-induced and most likely caused by spending far too many hours working with insufficient rest. My sister told me about Hippocrates Health
Institute, and in December 2011 I attended the life transformation program. I fell in love with the place— what they were teaching, the convergence of mind, body, and spirit, and the balance between nutrition and exercise. I came there weighing 260 pounds and in three weeks lost 30 pounds. I went back to my business, but after a few years lost my passion. I decided I would start health centers similar to Hippocrates in Canada or Mexico. I started reading books and studying about this lifestyle. I came back to Hippocrates in the summer of 2017 to attend the nine-week Health Educator Program. At that time, I shared my business plan with Brian Clement, who quickly saw my passion and offered me an amazing opportunity to curate and run a new Weight Loss Program .
How did Kimberly become part of the Program curriculum?
P
I realized I would need a medical and nutritional expert. So, I joined forces with Kimberly, who has a doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine and has been practicing as an integrative health consultant for years. Kimberly has been combining yogic philosophy, postural alignment therapy and personalized fitness to safely and effectively support thousands of
clients overcome their weight issues. Her comprehensive approach is exactly what I envisioned for the HWLA. Clients fill out a complete weight management intake form before they arrive. This reflection allows the guest to offer insight to their challenges and begin the process of taking responsibility for their health. Kimberly then analyzes their lifestyle, diet, medical history and any past/ current medications in order to prepare a personalized program prior to the guests’ arrival.

Kimberly, what sparked your passion for health?
I was always active and overweight. I believed that this was the body I had, and this was just the way things were. As a psychology student, I learned the powerful impact of exercise. It not only releases endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, which are chemicals responsible for our mood, but it increases blood flow to the brain, supporting mental clarity and awareness. The beneficial “side effects” of exercise as medicine were improved self-esteem, developing a strong social network of like-minded friends and increased energy to pursue my passions. I became excited about healthy eating and delved into a plant-based lifestyle. I completely changed my life and realized I had a perspective to share to give people control over their bodies and well-being. I worked as a personal
trainer during medical school, teaching clients to build muscle and enhance their metabolism by working outside of their comfort zone. Growth happens when you’re challenging yourself and having fun pushing your limits.

Pierre, you and Kimberly have both struggled with weight. Does that help you relate better to clients?
P
Absolutely. We both have a story and have been through the hardships ourselves. We know what our guests are feeling and can come up with effective solutions based on our personal experience. One of the most beautiful things about the program is that we can offer compassionate support. We’re completely immersed in this with them. We’re a team. We’re a family. And we’re going through this together.

What kind of successes have you witnessed?
A recent guest arrived with hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. In just three weeks his blood-sugar level dropped from 450 to 103 mg/dl. His vital signs improved so much that his doctor recommended discontinuing his diabetic medication, as he no longer met the criteria.
Many people who lose weight often gain it back. How does your program ensure long-term success?
P
One of our pillars is looking at their psychological and emotional state. Our guests have one-on-one sessions with psychotherapists because if you don’t manage the emotional side of obesity you’ll never have
long-term success. We created a mind-body-spirit weight loss program because there’s more to weight loss than just eating less and exercising more. We work on mindfulness at mealtime. We do mind-body exercises such as meditation, yoga, and stretching. Being more aware of what they’re doing and why they’re doing it empowers them with the ability to rewire the way their mind is working, reshaping their behaviors to achieve long-term success.
How does your program stress the importance of education?

We help them understand what a plant-based diet is - the physical benefits and the practical tools to fit it into their busy lives. We teach them how to read food labels, choose recipes and plan ahead for convenient meal prepping. During lectures, guests learn how to support hormone production and balance their nervous system, producing powerful clinical results with easy-to-apply lifestyle modification. ost consumers still remain challenged in accessing quality food with transparency. Food labeling follows government policies that lag in consumer protection and favor industry’s needs first. “Clear labeling” time and again becomes obfuscated in small print with mystifying terms, while not revealing the truth about any “hidden ingredients.” Shredding transparency further, constant corporate lead-changes and mergers make us dizzy, while buyouts tilt government policy-making in favor of industry. Unrestrained, multinational corporations consolidate their power to become greater influencers: Bayer and Monsanto merging, ChemChina acquiring Syngenta, DowDuPont spinning off a new business called Corteva Agriscience. “I am astounded at the inner mockery of industry using the name Corteva to handle its pesticide factories and research,” says Brian Clement. “A hybrid of Cor, Latin for ‘heart,’ and Teva, Hebrew for ‘nature.’ A deeper etymological root of the word teva, though, is ‘drowning,’ which makes more sense in describing how these chemical manipulations of our

foods will drown all our hearts. Thank God we have the knowledge and choice of healthy plant-based foods to trump all this nonsense.” Yet, our community “watchdog” barking gets even louder in navigating “food fights” in the right direction. Consumers want to know, and, working together, we still can create victories with our choices and pocketbooks.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
GMO Regulations by 2021: In the Federal Register under Food Labeling, May 4, 2018, the FDA published long-awaited regulations on the labeling of genetically engineered (GE) ingredients in food nutrition: “The final rule extends the compliance date for manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales from July 26, 2018, to Jan. 1, 2020; for manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual sales…from July 26, 2019, to Jan. 1, 2021.” As a preliminary comment, it appears that many of the products from gene silencing to editing technologies, such as CRISPR, used to modify canola oil to be herbicide tolerant, have slipped through the regulatory cracks and will be available on your market shelves with little or no label-

ing. Any slippage, filtering through or backsliding into organics is a fight we are willing to take on. (See the last Healing Our World magazine for an article on regulatory testimony submitted.) Farm Bill (expiring Sept. 30): During the next few weeks, on the heels of the primary election political posturing and before the August break, both Houses of Congress will attempt to complete its version of the Farm Bill—a major five-year funding authorization with the House version over 1,400 pages and a $949 billion price tag. The Farm Legislation will weave through multiple committees as it has a lengthy freight train of agendas, allocation formulas, special interests and subsidies, including numerous environmental programs. Handcuffing consumers’ freedom of spending and seeing an opportunity for welfare reform, many congressional members are challenging entitlement programs in the farm bill. Intense “markups” seek to give SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, a significant “haircut” by requiring participants “to not risk revoking benefits” by working or joining a training program to ensure some economic mobility. Further, the freedom of families to buy any food they wish will be corralled, with 50 percent of choices being limited to certain commodities as butter, milk, bread, wheat, and processed foodsall at the expense of restricting true healthy food choices. Further, there is a boost for companies like Wal-Mart, Coke, and dairy farmers where a “step-down and pass-through formula” is used making their commodities available to mil-
lions of food stamp recipients. Dr. Mark Hyman, a leader in functional medicine and a best-selling author, recently underscored his comments that “commodity crops are then paid” with billions of dollars, for example, “with Coke realizing 1/5th of its revenue coming from “these programs and millions of dollars going to Wal-Mart to buy processed foods” for SNAP recipients. Glyphosate Ruling for Crop Usage: Consumers await the final “approval” list from the Department of Agriculture regarding the use of glyphosate and round th up on crops. Whereas Europe, and other her countries, recently banned its use on food crops, the U.S. is lagging. Industry Ind agendas again continue to dom dominate consumers’ health. This is iis not surprising for government, as the EPA has tested thousands off chemicals for approval, yet it has never tested glyphosate. Cancer Warning Labels on Coffee: HHI has always been ahead of the curve on the dangers of drinking coffee. On May 8, 2018, in California, in a case involving Keurig Green Mountain and Peet’s Operating Co., Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle reaffirmed his prior decision that coffee must have a cancer warning label. The major concern is a carcinogen found in coffee from roasting called acrylamide. Federal Court Case on “Roundup Products” and Impact on Health (Case NO. M.16-02741 VC). A very significant “profit motives vs. consumer health” case is before the U.S. District Court in San Francisco with Honorable Vince Chabria. This true drama is being played out where multiple plaintiffs have sued the Monsanto Corporation and “partners” over health issues
and indu ndustry coverups. The court conduc ducted preliminary experts’ testimon mony on the health impact and potential tial liability of “Roundup Products.” Lines of questioning challenge the research that glyphosate is “OK” by pointing out to what extent full data sets were ignored or manipulated to support corporate agendas. For those research sleuths, the logical regression model was challenged, as referenced in the Brammer, Suresh and Wood “trend tests,” and how the data was scored. “False discovery rates in science” (pg. 789) was highlighted as put forth in Journal Nature and the Benjimini and Hochberg seminal paper from 1995. A “kingpin” in these claims is where the Food Industry ignored “risk factors” in the plaintiffs’ diets with exposure to glyphosate. The entire playing field is being exposed through detailed examination, argu-
ment, and framing as only can happen in legal proceedings. As parents and conscious consumers, we still imagine a world of food literacy, conscious wor buying, ng, and truth in labeling. Visit a socially responsible agricultural project as a way to imagine how things are done differently.
