ho am I? What am I doing? What is my purpose? I have identified myself and my purpose as many things over the years: a straight-A student seeking the perfect career, a stay-at-home wife and mother taking care of a home, a gym owner and fitness guru, and a seeker attending seminars and retreats for everything from A to Z to learn the secrets of a happy, healthy life. Like the song says: “She is running a hundred miles an hour in the wrong direction.” So was I. I had turned life into a task to be completed. Looking at others around me who were successful and trying to mimic that behavior wasn’t really a good decision. It wasn’t until I slowed down, stopped chasing the ideals of others, and quieted myself from the noise in my head that I discovered meaning in my life. I know that sounds strange since I had so many things in my life that made me feel blessed and full of love with a large extended family, wonderful husband, and great kids, and a job I loved. But I didn’t have myself. Life was great, but little did I know that once I slowed down and allowed my spirit to hear the voice of God inside myself, I wasn’t truly living the life that was intended for me. Since understanding the meaning of life for me, I have reached levels of happiness and success that I never imagined. The awareness all started with my first visit to Hippocrates. Removing the toxins and food and nourishing the body with the drinks and supplements provided, I began shifting. I operated less and less out of a physical and mental body and moved more into a spiritually guided human being. Everything in my life was getting better. It has been more than 10 years since that first visit, and I continue to be awakened to new opportunities and discoveries daily. I have been married 24 years this year and grow more and more in love daily. We have six wonderful children, two grandchildren, successful businesses, and we are surrounded by amazing family and friends. Are things always perfect? No. But now that I know how to live with meaning and rely on quiet time in my secret place, where I replenish my soul with the truths that God is great, I am happy each and every day. I walk in love toward everyone I encounter, especially myself! You must first clear the clutter and garbage. Don’t let another year pass without living your life to the fullest. inding oneself is a farcical thought, since we are already here. Rephrasing this puzzle would require us to think about how we could rekindle the spirit we had when we were newborns. We are immediately steered into estranging ourselves from the purity and innocence of wholeness. If we are lucky, it was with the support of loving parents. Sadly, but with the best intentions, they imposed their beliefs and limitations on us and aspired for us to reach the goals that they personally failed to accomplish. Next, we enter what we politely call education, which unfortunately and all too often is a systematic approach to carve us into the image of status quo “normality.” Religion, the third in the triune of deceptiveness, attempts to mold us into conformity utilizing fear-based methods. Voilà, all of this makes up the building blocks of what makes you, you. A wide array of modern and unconventional therapies and treatments claim to be the fast track back to self. They may or may not work depending upon whether or not they reignite your core energies or just excite you on a temporary basis. Surprisingly, some of you may even choose to pay thousands of dollars to get into auditoriums and yell and scream and get revved up by a motivator, only to return to your own lives feeling even more lost and depleted. Somewhere along the way, you will hopefully recognize that the wherewithal to be your authentic self is inside your own heart. Even though this beautiful epicenter of goodness may have been squeezed and hurt, the blooming flower of joy and success is at its core. Combined, we have worked in the field of advanced health care for nearly a century. One of the gifts this work has brought us is coming to know thousands of people who have left their sad, broken lives behind and embraced the powerful person that they have always been. In every case, they conquered disease or released emotional trauma. It is a declaration of self-realization and a tribute to the human spirit. If and when you are ready to seriously take charge of your life, there is no doubt that you have the inner wisdom and tools to do so. Arrest the need to ponder intellectual academics and allow your inner-self to guide you. It can seem easier at times to be entrapped in the social norms and habitual thoughts that have been brought about by a lifetime of vested training. Self-esteem is the first step in acquiring self-realization, which always results in personal power. There are no exceptional people, only those who live at the highest level of human potential. Unfortunately, the masses are all too busy in fruitless pursuits, only slightly tasting temporary happiness. One’s values determine the size of the tapestry they are weaving. Will it be something to rest a cup upon or hundreds of feet long on the side of a skyscraper? This is all totally up to you and there is no excuse that is legitimate enough for you not to contribute full effort into reestablishing your own persona. Isn’t it time?
When in Europe not too long ago, we met a previous guest who had been with us at Hippocrates some 20 years ago. At that time, she arrived in a wheelchair and was told by some of the top physicians in her country she only had weeks to live. Recalling the depth of her sadness was easy, as we thought about her many times through the years. Now, at 84 years old and a great-grandmother, she told us she had just returned home to attend our lecture after a two-week hiking trip in the Alps. We had her stand and address the group and will never forget what she said: “At first, I believed I was trying to save my life. Then one day, I awoke to realize I had to create a life that was worth saving.” Is this not the true reason why most of humanity is lost, confused, and without direction? We certainly believe so. In our role as the directors of Hippocrates, we are committed to our mission TO HELP PEOPLE HELP THEMSELVES, ultimately so they become whole, complete, contributors that find joy in every act of their lives. Stop the wandering and wondering and thank the universe for the great gift of life you’ve been given. Live your life in a way that is commendable and valuable. Find expansion to be your new pursuit and blockages to be your greatest teachers. Free yourself from this quest that is self-imposed and, frankly, an illusion. You are everything that you dream possible. Allow your true person to emerge.

I have heard that the soil is depleted of nutrients and vitamins and so people should take vitamins and supplements. If this were the case, how is it that all of the millions of wild living creatures roaming this earth eat from the same depleted soil yet seem to be in perfect health, weight, and shape?
Somewhere I heard that fruit is being produced a lot sweeter than it was many years ago. I asked many elderly people if they remember fruit as being less sweet and sugary many years ago as opposed to today. They all claimed it is about the same today as when they were a kid.
In 1987, the most important global conference on the environment was held in Brazil. The reports were stunning. They found that nearly 90 percent of the mineral-rich top soil had been depleted in less than a century. Today, it’s even worse. Most commercially grown organic food, although a better choice, is grown in weak terrain with little nutrients. Humans are not the only creatures that are becoming ill and aging prematurely. Our antics have also injured other species. If you are under the illusion that they are in perfect health, you best study veterinarian science and speak, as we have, to many of the leading authorities dealing with wild creature care. Pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides have spread globally and have even reached the wild terrain in faraway places via global weather patterns.
Four decades ago, when we removed fruit from the diet of the people who had cancer, we didn’t have a comprehensive understanding of why tumors were growing in the presence of high fructose. Agricultural scientists taught us that hybridization began thousands of years ago in Asia, and the average fruit today has 30 times more sugar than the original variety. Thomas Seyfried, Ph.D., the most important cancer researcher of our time, has exposed that fruit sugar feeds cancer even more than other forms since it metabolizes in the body as fat. This reduces oxygen loads, which Dr. Otto Warburg discussed in 1924, and he won the Nobel Prize in 1931 for his findings. We broadened the scope by removing all sugars and fruits as well from people with viruses, bacteria, molds, yeasts, fungus, low and high blood sugar, etc.

I am considering Botox to conceal some lines making me look older. I am a very healthconscious person and haven’t made an appointment yet because I feel guilty for wanting to check into things such as this and collagen fillers or injectables to plump aging lips and creases. What are your thoughts? Botox is a neurotoxic protein produced by certain bacteria that works by paralyzing tissue. For this reason, it is not the best choice when one wants to repair aging skin. There are other more natural injections that help activate collagen, and we would encourage you to speak to the most advanced cosmetic surgeons before coming to a decision on such an important choice.
If I am on a vegan diet, I hear that it’s a good idea to take DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) besides vitamin B12. If this is true, I find it frustrating to find DHA that does not have hypromellose, caramel color, or carrageenan— their way of creating the capsule. I did not like what I read about hypromellose. Your thoughts?
I have been taking LifeGive supplements for the last six to seven years. I truly believe that those supplements are the best! I have to say, though, I am very disappointed in several of the supplements I have taken over the years, because the ingredients have changed. They seem to be less potent. Phyto Enhanced was 3 pills = 1,800 mg Curcuma longa. This formula was excellent! It worked and I have taken this supplement faithfully over the years. It truly made a difference with my rheumatoid arthritis. Now the new LifeGive Curcumin Enhanced is only 2 pills = 800 mg and black pepper. It seems that for the same price we are now getting less ingredients. Also, Curcuma longa is a pure version. Now the new version has cheaper ingredients? Why?

orrest Gump is one of the greatest movies ever written and filmed, since its message is correct. Your heart should be the guiding force in all that you do. No matter how educated and intellectual you are, your emotional intelligence supersedes all else. Globally, so many people are joining societies and movements, and yet they often discard the real purpose of their existence. Creating your own realities fills the emptiness that often plagues us. This is easy to understand once you determine why you are here on Earth. Sadly, most people are caught up in survival mode and do not understand their real

purpose is to thrive and share. This always reminds me of the hamster wheel that the poor little creature spends hours a day pursuing. Wouldn’t it be nice to jump off the wheel and out of the cage to run around breathing fresh air and dreaming big dreams! Many of you reading these words may have attempted the figurative leap of faith followed by perceived failure, so are reluctant to do so again. My son, who is nearly 40 years old, was learning to speak shortly after his first birthday. When visiting a friend’s home that was heated with a wood stove, he touched it and for the first time blurted out, “Hot!” It was at that mo-

ment I recognized that trauma often molds our personalities. There is certainly a reason to learn to protect ourselves, yet there is a much greater advantage in loving our lives. Without forward movement, demise sets in. This is not always physical, but emotional, and spiritual. When beginning my work in the early 1970s, I began to see that the people I counseled would speak about traumatic experiences in their lives more often than the illness for which I was attending them. From 1982-1984, I questioned several hundred people who seemed to be the image of success and happiness. Some were renowned personalities, others
were people with happy marriages, but each was succeeding in the ways to which most of us aspire. I would ask two questions: first, tell me what you love about yourself the most, and second, talk about your problems. Not surprisingly, the average time people spoke in the affirmative was 7½ minutes. On the contrary, with their problems, I could have literally sat for days listening to all of their concerns. No wonder I stopped this exercise after 24 months since there seemed to be a bottomless pit of problems that even these well-adjusted fellow humans endured. This exercise made me realize that our lives have been afflicted by

Recognize that the personally imposed notions you have about yourself are just ideas that others have projected upon you. Historically, women have endured a secondary position in all societies since man’s insecurity has provoked them to suppress even the greatness, warmth, and kindness that their own mother offered.

Once you are ready and willing to submit yourself to your higher aspirations, you will experience resistance from even those who you

The first and foremost aspect of renewing your life, and being literally reborn, is to squelch the darkness by forcing, consuming, and becoming the light. There are no real losses, just learning. Some of this is tough love. As a child climbs on a bike for the first time, and soon falls scraping a knee, most continue in the pursuit until they have perfected this joyful experience. All is good, yet we waste enormous energy on finding the problems in the perfection of life. The First World War was called the war that would end all wars. What happened? Did we forget what mass death and destruction is? Do we hate ourselves so much that we are willing to kill that which is in our image? Powerful, purposeful people place problems in their privy so they can dispose them and continue on the course to fulfillment.

As a matter of fact, once I hear that someone is creating controversy against the traditional dogma, they become interesting. There is no need to expend a drop of energy for anything that is not enriching your life and that of others. Our biggest challenge today is the lack of commitment we have to maximizing our efforts. Getting by with half-heartedness is not a recipe for success. Although these futile attempts appear less difficult, the problems they create in the long run are catastrophic. If each and every woman and man fully committed themselves to the values they cherish, the world would become a wonderful place for humans to reside. At that point, no one would spew jealously, but everyone would encourage each other. The borders, boundaries, and limitations that our society has designed suck the joy out of you, often leading to pent-up hostility. We do not peacefully and rationally make decisions, but on the contrary, strike out like a venomous snake. Use your energy to manifest a smooth, reliable, and consistent image of reality. Having everything you already need liberates you to reunite the pieces of the puzzle that, when assembled, offer a beautiful picture of existence. Be confident and learn from the pressure that you will experience during your climb to your higher self. Most importantly, when you become you, become humble, appreciative, and pure.

n a brisk Canadian autumn day, I sat with the world’s most famous man in the field of oils and fats, Udo Erasmus. This vibrant and fit 77-year-old teacher, author, and advocate had just finished his latest book. We spoke of his pioneering work and how he inadvertently sparked a new movement in 1986 due to his own revelations about self-healing and omega oils known as essential fatty acids. These elements were first discovered in the late 1920s when omega 6 was unveiled. Omega 3 made its appearance in 1981, and though there are others such as 9, 7, 5, and so on, these two have become powerfully important because of their foundational necessity. Udo spent eight years

studying chemistry, biochemistry, and related conventional academics. He always felt there was something missing and found himself disenchanted enough not to pursue work in this field professionally. As a father of three, his role as caretaker led him to the pesticide industry. After three years, this noxious occupation fully contaminated his body and left him weak and ill. When visiting physicians, they offered no remedy to remove these poisons from his body. Udo concluded that he must be his own advocate and find his way out of the grips of his disorder. Becoming acutely interested in all the available research, he was led to study fats and oils. When finding that 99 percent of the public does not harbor adequate amounts of omegas, it moved him to investigate further. A compilation of insight, knowledge, and passion made him want to produce oils with health in mind. Consuming these powerful foods in concord with sauna, fasting, diet, and supplementation brought about his recovery. He could no longer flounder once he unlocked the secrets that these nutrients

or many years, I suffered one illness after another. I sought help from dozens of doctors and specialists, searching for an answer to my declining health. Instead of an answer, I was offered Band-Aids: temporary solutions that didn’t serve to heal the root cause. It took years, and finally a geneticist, to uncover the diagnosis of a rare, late-onset, mitochondrial disease. This metabolic disease triggered multiple secondary issues, including dysautonomia and PoTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome). My husband and I started searching for more holistic health-care facilities. That’s when I came across Hippocrates. While reading through the information and testimonials, I had a gut feeling that I needed to get there immediately. I chose to enroll in the three-week Life Transformation Program. We

Suddenly, I realized that during my desperate search for a diagnosis, I had given up on living. I’d lost all hope. That shocking revelation woke me up enough to say, “No. I want to live!” Then I experienced a physical cleansing that came by way of the abundant buffet of raw sprouts and vegetables served daily. After learning about the benefits of a plant-based diet, through the “Introduction to Living Foods” lecture, I knew that every bite I took was going to make me stronger, effectively giving me a better chance at overcoming my metabolic disease. I found that I really enjoyed eating a raw vegan diet. The famous Green Juice was surprisingly delicious; I looked forward to it every day.
W I actually developed a strong craving for as much salad, vegetables, and sprouts as I could get. As the days went on, I felt the weight of the world being lifted from my shoulders, and I became lighter and lighter, both physically and emotionally. My spirit was lifted, and my body continued to be cleansed of all the toxins and water that had accumulated over the years. In less than three weeks, I was 15 pounds lighter, and there was a glow radiating from within me that was visible to my friends and family. I looked healthy. I felt healthy—and happy. By making the necessary lifestyle changes, diligently adhering to the diet, and working with the therapists to let go of the emotional baggage I’d been carrying around for years, I successfully overhauled my life. Learning how to recognize the feelings underneath old habits and behaviors helped me move forward, taking my mindset to a more positive, peaceful place. I feel I am now better equipped to handle the stress that comes with suffering a chronic illness. I’m also incredibly grateful for the beautiful reconnection with God that I experienced while I was there. Thankfully, with the support of my husband, family, and friends, I have been able to continue with most of the lifestyle changes that Hippocrates teaches. I have remained in a more optimal state of health than I ever have before. I finally have hope. I am constantly overwhelmed by the desire to share my experience with anyone who’s in need of a lift, cleansing, spiritual renewal, or healing. I
attended Hippocrates Health Institute during the summer of 2017 to learn more about a healthy lifestyle and possibly avoid surgery. Due to very disruptive symptoms, my OB/GYN doctor suggested I undergo a hysterectomy that same summer. I read that this surgery is prescribed at a high rate in the United States, and I was hopeful that changing my diet instead could address the problems I was experiencing. I learned all about sprouts and raw foods for healing during my stay at Hippocrates and continued to eat the same foods every day when I returned home. Nine months later, I visited my doctor for a checkup and was able to report that my symptoms disappeared completely. I will
not need surgery or medications. I am grateful to Hippocrates and to the people I have found in my own community who help me continue this way of life. I have discovered vegan restaurants and farmers who grow sprouts and microgreens. These resources make it easy to continue this journey and manage choices. Although it was not my reason for going to Hippocrates, I also lost 10 pounds, and people ask me about my diet all the time. ever before have we had so many fitness options! Gyms are open 24 hours. Fitness trackers on our wrists alert us when it is time to get moving. You even can stream workouts via your smartphone! More choices, however, can cause people to become overwhelmed when starting a fitness regimen. Here are some helpful tips to ensure your success.

1 START SIMPLE
Get 15-20 minutes of activity each day if you currently are not involved in any form of exercise. Try not to get overwhelmed by taking on too much too soon. At the same time, make sure you are challenging yourself. The body is made to move and you need to push outside your comfort zone.

2 SET REALISTIC GOALS
Progress takes time. Try not to get frustrated if you don’t see instant results. You will not lose 50 pounds in one week. Be patient with your body. I promise it’ll be worth it!

Not all progress is measured on the scale. Be proud when you accomplish new goals, such as attending the gym consistently for an entire month. Do not reward yourself with food, however. Instead, treat yourself to a new workout outfit or massage.

Much like you wouldn’t cancel a meeting with your boss, training is non-negotiable. Show up every day, even when you don’t feel like it.

PREPARE THE NIGHT BEFORE
This means getting your gym bag ready and selecting your outfit for the next morning. I have some clients who sleep in their workout clothing. This forces them to get up and get moving.

STAY POSITIVE
Working out is not a punishment. Be grateful and thankful for your health. Never take your ability to move for granted.

BE CONSISTENT
Try to keep the same time for your training. This will set a pattern and create habits. Also, be consistent with your bedtime. Sleeping helps your body heal and recover.
PLAN YOUR WORKOUT
Try not to just “wing it” at the gym. A program sets out a logical plan of attack for your goals.

BE OPEN-MINDED
Be willing to learn new things. Many people get stuck in a rut because they have “always” done things a certain way. The body is smart and needs to be challenged or else you may hit a plateau.
ASK FOR HELP

FAST TRACK Can intermittent fasting help reduce your overeating? |
F
asting. Yuck! Nobody thinks “Yeah, I want to fast,” especially those who struggle with overeating. The word tends to conjure up unpleasant thoughts of hunger pangs, light-headedness, restriction, and deprivation. We tolerate fasting when we have to, for blood work or medical procedures like colonoscopies (double yuck). And fasting is a spiritual cleansing ritual associated with many religions.

But could intermittent fasting (IF) actually help reduce your overeating? The answer seems to be a resounding yes. Aside from reducing your cravings for sugar and processed foods, and turning you into an efficient fat-burning machine (making it easier for you to lose weight and maintain your ideal weight), research has confirmed that there are many other good reasons to fast.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IF? It involves timing your meals to allow for extended periods of fasting beyond the time you’re asleep. Research suggests that the most effective fasting schedule involves a fasting period of at least 16 hours. This means eating, for example, between the hours of 11am and 7pm or noon and 8pm, or any eight-hour period you prefer, allowing for approximately three food-
free hours before bed. Most people who practice IF skip breakfast; others skip dinner. During your “feeding window,” you might consume two large meals or two small meals plus snacks—whatever feels right for you. You can practice IF daily, every other day, or just once per week. When I heard about IF, my first thought was that the concept of skipping breakfast seemed to fly in the face of

MORE OF A LIFESTYLE THAN A DIET It’s a way of timing your food intake to optimize your health, weight, and longevity, especially since there is no calorie counting involved. Throughout history, our ancestors had to survive periods of famine. Avoiding starvation and getting enough to eat (while avoiding being eaten) was more often the challenge than overeating. Research suggests that fluctuations between periods of feast and famine are required for optimal metabolic function. The problem today is that most of us are always feasting, but rarely fasting. Our bodies are often digesting and processing food for 16 or more hours per day. And unlike our ancestors who were constantly on the move, our marked decrease in daily physical activity combined with an environment characterized by constant food abundance is a recipe for weight gain and obesity. When combined with daily movement, you can mimic the natural fluctuations in food

And just as you would on any healthy eating plan, it’s best to reduce or eliminate your intake of processed foods loaded with flour, sugar, and fat. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? IF normalizes your hunger hormone, known as ghrelin, and reduces cravings, which translates into weight loss. IF helps promote insulin sensitivity. Poor insulin sensitivity (think insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome) contributes to nearly all chronic diseases. IF increases the rate of human growth hormone production, which slows the aging process and has an important role in health and fitness. IF lowers your triglyceride levels and helps suppress inflammation and fights free radical damage. IF enhances brain function and preserves memory functioning and learning. IF is a way of lengthening your life—scientists have long known that caloric restriction (which naturally happens when you cut the amount of meals) extends longevity. IF has been

I had been taught that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that skipping meals slows the metabolism. But it turns out that fasting actually stimulates the metabolism (whereas eating all day doesn’t) and having a longer fast than the typical eight sleeping hours has immense benefits. And you’re still essentially having breakfast, just later in the day.

to lose weight on most diet plans find it much easier to lose weight with IF. WILL IF WORK FOR YOU? It’s important to note that IF is not a diet and is not about periods of starvation followed by binge eating. And IF is not a form of extreme calorie restriction. Therefore, IF would not be appropriate for anyone struggling with an eating disorder like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge-eating, or anyone newly recovering from an eating disorder. And while many emotional eaters find IF to be helpful in reducing cravings and improving metabolic function, it’s important not to fall into the trap of viewing the feeding window as a license to eat all your favorite comfort foods. With less time per day for feeding, good nutrition is even more important. It’s best to check with your medical doctor before embarking on any fasting schedule. IF is not something you should practice carelessly. It’s important to pay close attention to how your body feels. If you have adrenal or thyroid imbalances, are diabetic or have low blood sugar, or are pregnant and/or breastfeeding, you should avoid any type of calorie restriction or fasting schedule until your blood sugar or insulin levels are regulated. And if you have recently had surgery, you may not want to try any fasting schedule until you have clearance from your doctor. Take the time to educate yourself further on the many different types of fasting schedules. Intermittent fasting is a powerful way to reduce cravings and overeating, shift your body into fat-burning mode, and improve quite a few biomarkers for disease. It’s an evidence-based lifestyle adjustment for taking control of your health and fitness.

What do religions say about being vegan? Didn’t God put animals on the earth for us to eat?
A
There is no major religion (or at least not that I know of) that tells its followers to eat meat. Many devout Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Buddhists are vegan. It comes down to personal choice and individual religious

judgment. Of course, most religions stand for and advocate compassion, kindness, and mercy, which veganism totally aligns with. So, yes, in addition to personal and planetary health reasons, there are also religious reasons to become vegan.
This diagnosis has caused a lot of stress in your life, and I understand your fear that the world is threatening you. However, I also would like to point out that the stress you feel is not really coming from the world; it is coming from inside. When there is a lot of fear already inside you, a triggering stimulus such as a diagnosis can send you over the edge. Fortunately, that means the answer to the problem you face is also within. It is worth looking into what may be triggering this fear in you now. Here’s what Dr. David R. Hawkins explains in his book, “Letting Go: The Pathway to Surrender: “ “Stress results from the accumulated pressure of our repressed and suppressed feelings. The pressure seeks

relief, and so external events only trigger what we have been holding down, both consciously and unconsciously.” Your perception of the world may be due to a fear you have either repressed or suppressed. Suppression is the method of our conscious mind to avoid negative emotions, while repression is the method of our unconscious mind. Fear is one such negative emotion. It creates a negative energy that sees “danger” everywhere. When facing fear, your mind is preoccupied with security and, therefore, may express itself in avoidance, defensiveness, possessiveness, jealousy, restlessness, anxiety, or vigilance. Whatever our mind focuses on begins to grow. Overcome your fear of lost relationships by focusing on the love you have now, rather than the potential for the loss of that love. Focus on the difference you are making at a given time in your job, rather than the limitations you might feel. Your plans for the future are always conditional, like everyone’s. Turn “uncertainty” into “possibility.” If you focus on the present and let go of the worry and concern about the future, your faith in yourself and in the divine power will be greater!

I’m worried that my new healthy lifestyle choices will be stressful for my young kids. I don’t want them to be singled out as different or weird. I really want to shelter them, and I feel guilty for making their lives harder.

First off, I applaud you for choosing to be healthy and wanting to shelter your children. I also think this is about you, not just them. To the degree that you feel “dif-

ferent” and “weird” about your new choices is the degree your kids will be prone to do so. By choosing a healthy lifestyle for your family, you are modeling integrity, courage and wisdom to your children. That easily turns into a healthy pride. When my little veggie daughter was 3, I overheard her say to a schoolmate, “Animals are my friends, and I don’t eat my friends,” and another time I overheard her answer the question, “What religion are you, Jewish or Christian?” with “I’m a vegetarian.” I could tell how good

she felt about herself, even if that meant being different. Here are some tips to help your kids along the path of making healthy choices: 1. Help them answer all their own questions about the new ways the family is living so they can answer questions asked of them. 2. Make it fun. Go shopping and do food preparation together. Grow sprouts together. Show how choosing health is a celebration, not a chore or deprivation. 3. Connect with other families making healthy choices, so they can meet other kids who are living like them, and so they actually won’t feel different. 4. Inform your kids’ teachers about your healthy choices. Make healthy treats for their classmates. Help them do sprouting projects for science class. Be proactive! “Normalize” the lifestyle for your kids primarily by knowing and affirming the goodness and rightness of it, in word and deed. Your kids will be better for it. More than protection from an unsympathetic world, they need a strong home front as their foundation.

Accepting the unacceptable can lead to self-fulfillment.

I
n 1969, pop psychiatrist Thomas A. Harris wrote a self-help manual titled, “I’m OK, You’re OK”. It became such a runaway bestseller that its title became a catchphrase of the ’70s. What a nice attitude. It says, “I accept myself as OK, and I accept you as OK.” Sounds great. But what if I don’t feel OK? Am I then stuck with, “I’m not OK, but you are”? What a demeaning way to live in the world! Everyone else is somehow more real and entitled than me. If I’m that not-OK, I’m lucky to get scraps. I’ll end

up settling for the short end of the stick in every arena of life. Happiness is for others, not me. Woe is me, poor, poor pitiful not-OK me. “OK-ness” is a subjective assessment of the self, based on ideas and feelings, mostly from the past. If I had a family who praised, appreciated, adored, and guided me, I’d probably end up feeling OK about myself no matter what happened externally, no matter what I look like, no matter what my flaws are. But if I had parents who ignored, demeaned, shamed, or belittled me and my

needs, I’d probably end up feeling bad and not OK about myself no matter what happened externally. (Yes, I’ve seen supermodels doubt their good looks, and wealthy people feel financially insecure.) OK-ness or self-esteem is like the rudder of a sailboat: when it’s deep, the vessel can endure huge waves; when it’s shallow or missing, the boat can capsize in puddle-deep water. The good news is whatever has been done can be undone, and whatever hasn’t been done still can be done. I love that about human freedom. I love that as a
therapist. When I witness someone with an arid past and bad sense of self recover or discover a fundamental sense of OK-ness, I like it. The hard-earned sense of OK-ness claimed through working a 12-step program, or therapy, or just plain life lessons is sweet. Now here’s what I really like: Elizabeth Kuebler-Ross’ version of Dr. Harris’ statement, “I’m OK, you’re OK.” Dr. Kuebler-Ross was a psychiatrist famous for identifying the five stages of the dying and death process. She came up with this: “I’m not OK, and you’re not OK. But that’s OK.” Now
M there’s a humanism I can live with! In her model, I don’t even have to be OK to experience OKness! It’s like a free ticket to the circus! Come on in! Admit one! Everyone welcome! Self-acceptance means being able to admit flaws, laugh at one’s own quirks, and screw up without declaring oneself a screwup. Self-acceptance means knowing it’s not a sin or stupid to not know what you don’t know. Self-acceptance says “maybe I’m not right about something, but I’m right with my core.” So let’s go a little deeper. I say in order for there to be true, lasting self-acceptance, there must be knowledge of the core self. If I base my self-acceptance on momentary success, fame, ideas, feelings, or even the acceptance of others, it’s subject to change, and then I’m subject to suffering. I must know the self that abides amid the changes but doesn’t change. And, frankly, that self is so lovely, deep, and peace-drenched that self-acceptance hangs like heavy fruit on its branches, waiting to be picked. No need to chant, “I love myself, I love myself.” Here! Just reach for the fruit, pluck, and enjoy! (Just a metaphor, for those of you who currently aren’t eating fruit.) How to come by this core self, you ask? In quietude, when the mind finally settles down, in those little moments when lifeas-is breaks through the ideas, when each breath signals “I am alive,” and you get it and feel it full measure! That means I have to take time to be quiet, maybe on a regular basis. So yes, even though self-acceptance is like the natural sweetness of a fruit off a tree, and even though it’s my own tree on my own property, it still takes effort to be with it. I still have to reach for it. That’s where the quest for self-acceptance comes in. The

noble search for peace and truth. The age-old quest for enlightenment. It’s the element we seek in everything we pursue: aliveness, fun, joy, depth, love, rest. If only we could have that feeling within us without the attachment to form. Then we’d be in heaven! Having that experience, and knowing the self as part of that joy, containing that love, and being contained by that aliveness—then we’re right there plucking the fruit off that tree and enjoying the juiciness of the moment.

Sometimes the love and acceptance of others is a good place to start. We see that in the Healing Circle at Hippocrates week after week: people sharing and accepting the supposedly unacceptable things about each other. That kind of concentrated love and support can bust through years of wall-building and negativity and self-condemnation. That kind of kindness heals hearts and lives. When others reach out to us with unconditional acceptance, it helps us reach in and find it there, too.

Outside love helps but is not the final measure of successful self-acceptance. The true flower of self-acceptance grows in a deeper garden, in a place inside us even deeper than any messages of undeservedness, deeper than any layers of holding back or hiding out. It’s a precious flower planted by God long ago, when we were innocent and original. All we have to do to find our way there again is to become as simple and guileless as we were back then. To rediscover our innocence and reclaim it as our core—that’s a solid foundation for full self-acceptance. Now, let’s talk about shadows and the dark side of human nature. Goodness and light are easy to accept because, well, they’re good, and it’s easier to feel good about goodness than it is to feel good about badness. We humans collectively honor goodness and dislike the dark side. But every yin has its yang. The larger the front, the larger the back. Every good thing about us and in us casts a shadow, and we need to reckon with it and, yes, make peace with it to round out the self-acceptance picture. The Dark Side is important and ignoring it can lead to problems. Did you know that Mahatma Gandhi beat his wife? How do I know that? He wrote it in his autobiography, fully confessing that he not only contained the seeds of violence within himself, but also had acted on them in his life. I honor the man who admits his dark side and then transforms it into humility and determination to be nonviolent. I accept Gandhi as my hero, not because he was perfect but because he kept on going beyond his mistakes. He kept on perfecting himself with flaws and all. He didn’t hide his imperfections but challenged himself with them to reach new depths of personhood. Heck, it turns out even Gandhi wasn’t OK. But that’s OK.

he dental profession is a field with a long, loving relationship with metals. In the 1800s, metallic substitutes were made by pressing aluminum, gold, lead, platinum, and silver into the dental cavities. It has been claimed for years that these alloys used for dental restorations (for example, porcelain fused to metal crowns, mercury amalgam fillings, titanium implants) have no negative impact on our mouth and in our body. If we stick to the facts, however, the story is entirely different. Cytotoxic, immunological, and carcinogenic effects, as well as influences on metabolism, have been significantly proved for various metals such as mercury, gold, platinum, copper, cobalt, aluminum, iron, and chromium. Usually, metal components are detected everywhere in the body only a few days after insertion into the mouth. Metals can negatively influence our bodies by acting on three different levels: 1. Toxicity: Metals can bind to proteins, enzymes, and cell membranes and block their functions. This is particularly more harmful in the case of mercury amalgams. 2. Immunological effects: These are very dangerous as they can trigger different types of allergies, foreign-body induced inflammation (as evidenced with titanium), and autoimmune diseases. 3. Electrical component: In the modern age of mobile communications, WLAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and radar scatter, reflect, modulate, amplify, and mobilize electromagnetic radiation. In the specific case of titanium implants, these demonstrate an antenna effect; 3G to 4G networks heat up the surrounding bone by several degrees Celsius. Microwave radiation always results in metals heating up.
Mercury toxicity alone can develop into a chronic illness that may produce one or all of the following symptoms: • Cognitive impairment • Fatigue • Dizziness • Headaches • Joint pain • Anxiety and/or depression • Metallic taste in the mouth • Autoimmune diseases • Peripheral neuropathy (numbness and
tingling in the feet and hands) Dental amalgam fillings, which are made with a mixture of mercury, silver, copper, tin, and sometimes zinc, are still used in the United States and a number of other countries. Often called “silver fillings,” all dental amalgams are 45 to 55 percent elemental mercury. Mercury is toxic, and this poison is recognized as a chemical of major concern because it poses a dangerous threat to public health. Mercury accumulates in the body, and any amount of mercury taken into the body should be considered hazardous. When it was proposed in the 1930s that dental amalgams should utilize mercury as a major ingredient to more easily shape and work dental filling materials, it was hotly debated for several years at the American Dental Association. Ultimately, it was decided that the convenience of adding mercury to other metals for the purpose of making dental fillings outweighed the known risks of toxicity. For the reasons mentioned above, it is Dental Cosmetics Costa Rica’s treatment protocol to remove all metals from the oral cavity. It goes without saying that this must be carried out following the appropriate safety measures.
We strictly follow the protocols stated by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) and we are now certified for SMART, or Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique, a series of extensive safety recommendations for removal of existing dental mercury amalgam fillings, including detailed protective measures that are to be utilized for the procedure. Other metal restorations, such as crowns and bridges, can be removed using a dental dam in order to avoid metal particles from being absorbed by the mucous membranes and the gastrointestinal tract. Last but not least, the explanation of titanium implants is carried out using a special implant removal kit, making it possible to unscrew the implant from the bone without triggering the usual bone defect, followed by the immediate replacement with a fully ceramic implant, preventing further bone loss, saving time, and allowing the patient to receive, in most cases, a fixed and immediate temporary crown. Modern dentistry should focus not only on delivering long-lasting and cosmetic dental restorations for our patients but understanding the important role of the mouth within the entire body as a whole, paying close attention to the materials and techniques being used to provide the safest and most compatible result. ost of us mere mortals fall prey to the notion that an enduring sense of happiness, peace, safety, and security can be found in conditions, things, and beings. Whether we’re hoping to lose weight, land that dream job, or meet the right partner, it’s easy to get caught up in our material lives and lose sight of spiritual needs. Often, it’s only when we reach our goals that we discover their achievement brings little permanent satisfaction. We may begin to wonder if there is more to life than pursuing endless earthly desires. If you find yourself routinely overeating at meals, snacking mindlessly or bingeing regularly, your overeating may represent a “call from your soul,” a sort of spiritual hunger informing you something is out of balance. The spiritual component of well-being

involves a search for meaning, serenity, and joy that goes beyond day-to-day concerns. Just as a wholesome meal nourishes the body, spirituality nourishes the soul. We all desire a life filled with purpose and passion; a life rich in soul-nourishing connections to family, friends, community, and nature. If you’re feeling spiritually depleted, you may feel disconnected from the deeper reserves of joy, passion, and contentment within or from your higher self or a higher power. You may feel disconnected from other nourishing human beings. Perhaps you feel disconnected from your calling or sense of purpose in life. And there’s a good chance this disconnection is fueling your overeating. Symptoms of spiritual depletion include emptiness, restlessness, unease, purposelessness, meaninglessness, lack

of inspiration or motivation, boredom, loneliness, lack of personal fulfillment, discontentment, dissatisfaction or a sense of being lost in life. Even when we’ve achieved our desired goals and our lives seem relatively full, we still can experience symptoms of spiritual depletion. Some soul-care practices (see next page) may assist you in addressing this disconnection and filling up your spiritual reserves. Setting aside time to consciously shift your focus away from daily concerns allows you to gain a more expansive perspective on your life and access a sense of peace and joy you may have never known. This joy has absolutely nothing to do with beauty, weight, possessions, or attachments, or the people you know. This joy can put an end to your overeating.

TO ADDRESS SPIRITUAL HUNGER QUIET YOUR MIND Even though you may not be able to reduce the multitude of tasks you must accomplish in a day or all the roles you play, you can minimize their negative effect by consciously withdrawing from your busy schedule to quiet your mind. A popular technique is to focus your complete attention on counting your breaths. As you inhale deeply, count the number one to yourself silently and then exhale deeply. Repeat three times, counting up to the number four, focusing solely on inhaling, exhaling, and counting. As you inhale, imagine yourself breathing in light, love, and calm. Breathe out and exhale stress, negativity, and worry. Your body and mind are beginning to relax.

Most of us believe if we apply enough effort, we can control our lives. If we have the talent, ability, or good fortune to manifest many of our desires, we become, without realizing it, invested in this illusion. We dream big, set goals, and become emotionally attached to power, beauty, money, prestige, possessions, perfection, people, and even the idea that things will always go our way. Letting go is not necessarily about giving up on your goals. It’s about finding balance. Make a list of all of the attachments in your life that create imbalance. Don’t forget to include states of being, such as the need to be right or well-liked; outcomes, such as quick payoffs; and the past, like grudges and regrets. Pick one attachment and set an intention to work on it. Commit to one small change you can make. Explore your emotions regarding letting go. What do you fear will happen if you let go? What will you lose or give up? What will you gain?
FILL UP ON NOURISHING CONNECTIONS
Are loneliness and isolation factors in your overeating? If so, you can attract others who are nourishing by starting small and focusing on increasing your experience of connection. Smile at the bank teller or pet a friendly dog and say hello to its guardian. Connections that involve giving or helping others elicit positive physiological sensations called “the helper’s high.” These positive feelings are motivating and can push you past the withdrawal associated with loneliness. Nourishing relationships provide a place to feel safe, seen, heard, accepted, understood, and loved. Get clear on the qualities or traits you are looking for in friends or partners. Envision the type of person you want to attract and write your vision in a journal. Be proactive when socializing and make contact with people who have the traits you desire. Don’t just take those who take you.
FILL YOUR LIFE WITH PURPOSE AND MEANING
Nothing feels better than waking up and looking forward to the day. We feel a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction because our lives have purpose and feel meaningful. And it’s even better if we feel inspired and passionate about what we’re doing. We become imbalanced when we don’t have enough meaningful activity in our lives, and this can lead to eating in an attempt to fill up the emptiness. If your life feels devoid of significance right now, try not to lose hope or faith. It will take some time to build more purpose and meaning but doing so is not impossible. Let your heart guide you in finding more stimulating or joy-filled activities. Make a list of potential activities, including those that contribute to the well-being of others. Helping others can lift you out of a seemingly purposeless existence.

SupraPRP A NON-SURGICAL OPTION FOR THE TREATMENT OF JOINT PAIN AND LIMITED MOBILITY. By Catherine A. Smith, B.SC. (Glasgow), PGDE (Glasgow)
M
any people suffer painful arthritic joints and inflammation surrounding soft tissues. Most commonly, knees, hips, and shoulders. Others suffer severe debilitating back pain affecting their daily functioning. Here at the Maharaj Institute of Immune Regenerative Medicine, we developed a procedure called a Supra PlateletRich Plasma (SupraPRP). Prior to the treatment, the patient receives therapy to reduce systemic inflammation, which aids the repair process. It is unlike other PRPs or procedures that use adipose (fat) stem cells, umbilical cord stem cells, amniotic tissue, or no stem cells at all. THE ART OF PWO Ancient wayfinding navigators would close their eyes while becoming solid with the water to determine the land’s movement and where to go—known as the sacred ritual of pwo. Such stewardship of the rapidly changing food policy landscape seems to require pwo-type maneuvering. In the face of congressional stalemates until the elections and a deliberate governmental unwinding of food policies in favor of industry, consumers require a sharpening of discernment lenses to decipher the “real truth” beneath labels and codes. At the 2019 Real Truth About Health Conference, Vandana Shiva emphasized that the “acorn is not isolated.” It carries everything inside itself that is needed to flourish as a healthy plant with the brilliance and intelligence needed to express itself. All of us hold an innate intelligence in our buying power through our food choices. Demanding transparency in food safety, smart packaging, and the high-water information processing marks help rudder our choices in the right direction. Our buying power is our pwo navigational muscle. We apply a cascading pressure on the U.S. food policy system by demanding truth, at the same time protecting the small 1 percent of U.S. farmland growing pure organic crops1.

Calling it a “biospiracy,” Shiva underscores challenges emerging in 2019. Clusters of biotech corporations have sought to patent all life. Following court hearings, natural gene patents were ruled “not allowed.” However, synthetic, complementary, or altered genes of any sort can be patented. The cascading effect results in a patch quilt of “truth in labeling” too often camouflaged by tricky new wordings of ingredients on product labels that even leak through organic definitions. All of this supports industry profits and a food dance that advances technologies over people. Hyper-launching these technologies, such as CRISPR, by design challenges the true nature of the seeds, foods, and products we buy. (CRISPR-Cas9 is a gene-editing biotechnology process within an organism, specializing in stretches of DNA where an enzyme acts like a pair of molecular scissors, capable of cutting strands and creating new sequences.) However, taking control of our choices in ways not seen in the past, we can succeed knowing that healthy “eating is not a mechanical act” but a statement of resolve. Our pocketbooks are powerful and speak loudly. Together, our awareness and purchasing power create a powerful impact at all policymaking levels and result in a significant pushback against the agendas of Big Ag and Big Pharma.

SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY LABELING Still, gangster disrupters emerge in a flurry of behind-the-scenes efforts to erode the purity of food labeling, often at the expense of full disclosure of all of the junk ingredients hidden in the ingredients. Consumers remain concerned about “the right fuel” for healthy bodies and implications of designer food on our microbiome—that vast army of microbes in our bodies that do all the work breaking down our food for fuel. The final rule of the actual labeling disclosure regulations, spawned from the GMO labeling bill, as Public Law 114-214, took effect on a “volunteer” basis on Feb. 19, 2019, with full mandatory disclosure by Jan. 1, 2022. By December 2018, some importers, manufacturers, and certain retailers had to label bioengineered packaged ingredients with a symbol if more than 5 percent by weight existed of each GMO ingredient. Deliberately omitted from the regulation’s enforcement reach are emerging technologies and tricky food processes. Some synthetic food starters designed to trigger a form of fermentation at a stage No. 1 growth level, for example, do not require labeling. The sufficient testing of Roundup residue on oats, wheat, and lentils remains incomplete. CRISPR products have a free ride, along with many synthetic biology crops marketed as healthy com-

modities. Recently, the Impossible Burger and Beyond Burger brands exploded onto the marketplace as “custom faux meats” engineered to taste, cook, and smell like meat. This vibrant “fake beef” market has exploded in 5,000 fast-food outlets, including Carl’s Jr. and TGI Friday’s, and 13,000 grocery outlets, including Whole Foods. Labeling remains a loose fit. To underscore the frighteningly vast reach of such uncontrolled experiments, in January, statnews.com reported that scientist He Jiankui used technology to change in vitro fertilization (IVF) embryos, resulting in the first genome-edited CCR5 gene, resulting in the first CRISPR babies being born. The manipulation of food begins to appear as child’s play. However, a fierce demand for new protocols and testing to meet these challenges is in order, at every level of our society, to mitigate runaway science.
A WEED KILLER’S ESCAPE PLAN
Even when caught, an elaborate “El Chapo-esque” tapestry of escape tactics and persistent maneuvers emerge, as seen in the glyphosate Roundup carcinogenic challenge. Two U.S. cases are in play to stage a way out.

Countering an avalanche of evidence presented in supporting the plaintiff, the Dewayne “Lee” Johnson case (Healing Our World, January 2019, page 65) advanced before the California State Court of Appeals (case A155940). The Bayer/Monsanto team and Johnson’s attorneys are submitting briefs by April. Bayer/Monsanto, arguing that the court award of $78.5 million was unmerited, claims that the glyphosate-based herbicide is safe and “not likely to be carcinogenic.” In a second challenge to Monsanto claiming that glyphosate caused Edwin Hardeman to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma, U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria scheduled a Feb. 25 trial start. Once purporting there were 600 studies supporting the safety of glyphosate, the Monsanto defense team submitted a filing where it “has not identified any 12 months or longer chronic toxicity studies that it has conducted on glyphosate-containing formulations” that were available in the United States as of June 29, 2017. This case seeks to establish clear precedent-setting benchmark epidemiology against glyphosate as a guideline for future actions and a clear threshold link for Roundup exposure, setting stage for more than 9,000 additional plaintiffs. The proleptic positioning of Monsanto’s strategies began to be unveiled as underbelly tactics used in this high-stakes game of manipulation, as articulated by journalist Carey Gillam, author of “Whitewash.” At the 2019 Real Truth About Health Conference, exposing masterful Monsanto puppetry, she shared insights from court documents referencing front groups “creating a scientific outreach network around the world…with scientists who would ‘jump up and shout’ that glyphosate is nontoxic.…They wanted to make sure that the scientists would appear to be independent and nobody would know that Monsanto was associated with them.…They talk about how much money it might cost…how much these scientists might need to be paid to be ‘part of their network.’” As industries’ vulnerabilities continue to be exposed at every level, driven by the mantra “Quality Food Is a Human Right,” the POP Campaign and Hippocrates commit to tracking policies, orchestrating actions that make sense, and informing you to make a difference as healthy consumers. 1. https://newfoodeconomy.org/kashi-certified-transitional-organic
