THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME DRAMATURG’S NOTE The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, based on the young adult novel by Mark Haddon, takes us into the particular mental universe of a prodigiously talented teenage boy confounded by a world of preoccupied adults. His experience is, in that sense, not so different from other adolescents. But our protagonist Christopher, has a lens all his own. Both Haddon’s novel and Simon Stephen’s stage adaptation, which played successfully in London and on Broadway, have been lauded as a useful guide to understanding the experience of those on the Autism Spectrum. Because of this praise it is important to note that Christopher is not the face of Autism. In fact, author Mark Haddon never intended to create a wholly accurate picture of Autism through Christopher. While Christopher may exemplify the experience of some people on the Spectrum, it is crucial to recognize that Autism is a very complex neurological disorder with extraordinary depth and breadth. As Haddon once said, “We would never ask if a character in a novel was a correct representation of a cellist or a lesbian or an archbishop. There is no such thing. And the same is true for people who are given the label ‘disabled’. They are as various and individual as any other group in society.” Our production does not try to portray the most accurate representation of Autism, as that would be an impossible task. What we have instead tried to do is take an informed approach to the topic while committing to the creation of a piece of art which speaks to the humanity within each of us. Thank you for your patronage, your self-reflection, and your open mind. – Jesse Desrosiers, Dramaturg & Dr. Ralf Remshardt, Director
