ABOUT THE CO-PRODUCTION WITH FREE FALL THEATRE

A Hippodrome Co-Production with freeFall Theater – A Brand New World! The 2019-20 Season at the Hippodrome has been a time of growth and new initiatives. And none are as exciting to us as our first Co-Production with freeFall Theater. This is a brand new adventure for both theaters, and a wonderful example of the Florida theatrical community coming together to create great art and support each other at the same time. I had been talking to artistic director Eric Davis for years about the possibility of doing a co-production between his theatre, freeFall in St. Petersburg, and the Hippodrome but there were a lot of details to work out. Would it involve one show or two? How could we share designers and actors? How could we make our production schedules match and satisfy Actors Equity Association, the union for professional actors? Eventually, we decided that each theater would originate one production in January and then the same cast would travel to the other theatre to continue its run. We chose two shows that we knew our audiences would love -- LONE STAR SPIRITS, a hysterical comedy set in Texas and MARIE & ROSETTA, the remarkable story of legendary Rosetta Tharpe, the godmother of rock and roll, and her protege Marie Knight. When the first show, LONE STAR SPIRITS closes on February 16th, The Hippodrome will load the sets, costumes, and props into a UHaul and drive it to St. Petersburg. FreeFall will do the same and our trucks will pass each other on I-75. This co-production allows us to share our designers, thereby bringing new creative ideas to our audiences. Some of our company members will be working at freeFall for the first time and some of their favorite actors will be performing at The Hipp. And just as importantly, the fiscal implications of this co-production will help both theaters. By sharing productions, it will help us keep our costs lower and shorten our dark time (no shows equal no income) to only ten days between shows. We hope you enjoy both of these remarkable plays as we embark on this new adventure of shared creativity and artistic and fiscal growth. -Stephanie Lynge (Artistic Director of Hippodrome Theatre)

The Hipp unplugged:

A Staged Reading Series

To Be by Candace Clift

U p N e x t. . .

Feb. 10 - 11 at 7:30 p.m. What happens when you wake up to a life that has turned upside down and nothing is what it once was? To Be is one woman’s humorous, sometimes wrenching, reckoning with breast cancer, mortality and Hamlet. It is a journey of hope and desire that wrestles bravely with life’s most important question.

26 Pebbles by Eric Ulloa

Directed by Gregg Jones March 2 -3 at 7:30 p.m. On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed twenty-six innocent souls before taking his own life. These twenty-six innocent deaths, like pebbles thrown into a pond, created ripples and vibrations that were felt far beyond the initial rings. This is the story of those vibrations

Quicksand

Writen and directed by Bryan Mercer and Clint Thornton April 6 - 7 at 7:30 p.m. Set in timeless areas of the Central Florida swamps, Quicksand is a humorous and haunting exploration of a rigorous childhood amongst ghostly allies and corporeal monsters. A hypnotic soundscape created live by the performers underscores porch-told stories that span the hilarious, heartbreaking, and surreal aspects of a young life molded by moss, alligators, and beautifully powerful water.

FACT SHEET for Lone Star Spirits How much does Lone Star Spirit really cost to produce?

$87,050 Where does that money go? ACTORS - $31,000 The Hippodrome casts professional actors who work all across the country, earning their living as artists. Equity actors earn a union rate and contributions to their health and pension plans for every week they work at a professional theatre like the Hipp. TRAVEL -$1,500 The cost to transport actors to & from Gainesville and make their stay comfortable. DESIGNERS and CREW - $37,150 The Hippodrome employs resident designers and artists to work on productions year-round, hiring guest talent when special touches are needed. PRODUCTION COSTS - $6,900 Modern-day can be a lot less expensive because costumes and props are readily available. ROYALTIES - $4,000 These give us the legal right to perform the play and is paid to the writers. MARKETING - $6,500 Includes TV and radio ads, online marketing, and more. Thanks to an Alachua County grant, this year we have a lot more to spend! This doesn’t include the additional cost of keeping the lights on, the box office staffed, and the toilet paper rolls full. Your donations help us bring high quality theatre to Gainesville. Want to see more shows like this?
