MARIE AND ROSETTA Lydia Fort** (Director) . has directed at Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Bay Street Theater, Actors Express, Cygnet Theatre, Diversionary Theatre, Perseverance Theatre, Women’s Project Theatre, Women Center Stage,Urban Stages, McCarter Theatre YouthInk! Festival, New Federal Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theater, Classical Theatre of Harlem, freeFall Theatre, Hangar Theatre, Planet Connections Festivity (where she was honored with the 2103 Best Director Award) as well as other festivals including the New Black Fest, 48 Hours in Harlem and the Fire This Time Festival. She is an Assistant Professor at Emory University and serves on the Executive Board of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. MFA in Directing from the University of Washington. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a force of nature; a woman ahead of her time. She pioneered a sound that influenced the first generation of rock ‘n’ roll legends but was all but forgotten up until a few years ago when she was inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Growing up, I knew that while Elvis was lauded as the progeninator of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Little Richard and Chuck Berry were there leading the way in its nascent stage. It was a source of pride to know that African Americans had a major impact in the birth of this important musical genre. But now we know that Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a Black woman, was in fact the real pioneer of that guitar sound we know as Rock ‘n’ Roll. Marie and Rosetta is a gorgeous play that celebrates Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s rightful place in the annals of Rock history, and she was a woman who boldly proclaimed her worth in a time when America fiercely denied it. In Marie and Rosetta, playwright George Brant bestows an honor long overdue for the Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll and allows us theatre-makers and audiences alike to come to know the powerhouse and heroine that Sister Rosetta Tharpe continues to be for people all over the world today. -Lydia Fort** (Director)

ABOUT THE CO-PRODUCTION WITH FREE FALL THEATRE

A Hippodrome Co-Production with freeFall Theater – A Brand New World! The 2019-20 Season at the Hippodrome has been a time of growth and new initiatives. And none are as exciting to us as our first Co-Production with freeFall Theater. This is a brand new adventure for both theaters, and a wonderful example of the Florida theatrical community coming together to create great art and support each other at the same time. I had been talking to artistic director Eric Davis for years about the possibility of doing a co-production between his theatre, freeFall in St. Petersburg, and the Hippodrome but there were a lot of details to work out. Would it involve one show or two? How could we share designers and actors? How could we make our production schedules match and satisfy Actors Equity Association, the union for professional actors? Eventually, we decided that each theater would originate one production in January and then the same cast would travel to the other theatre to continue its run. We chose two shows that we knew our audiences would love -- LONE STAR SPIRITS, a hysterical comedy set in Texas and MARIE & ROSETTA, the remarkable story of legendary Rosetta Tharpe, the godmother of rock and roll, and her protege Marie Knight. When the first show, LONE STAR SPIRITS closes on February 16th, The Hippodrome will load the sets, costumes, and props into a UHaul and drive it to St. Petersburg. FreeFall will do the same and our trucks will pass each other on I-75. This co-production allows us to share our designers, thereby bringing new creative ideas to our audiences. Some of our company members will be working at freeFall for the first time and some of their favorite actors will be performing at The Hipp. And just as importantly, the fiscal implications of this co-production will help both theaters. By sharing productions, it will help us keep our costs lower and shorten our dark time (no shows equal no income) to only ten days between shows. We hope you enjoy both of these remarkable plays as we embark on this new adventure of shared creativity and artistic and fiscal growth. -Stephanie Lynge (Artistic Director of Hippodrome Theatre)
