Director’s Note

Before I visited Gainesville for the first time to work on A Christmas Carol as an actor in 2016, just about the only thing I knew about the story of the grumpy old miser called Ebeneezer Scrooge came from Bill Murray’s portrayal of jaded TV exec Frank Cross in the 1988 Richard Donner film, Scrooged, a favorite of mine in any season.

The film had touched me deeply, though I had never picked up a copy of Dickens’ original text, despite living through an entire lit class about his work. I had only seen the play itself once at The Goodman Theater in Chicago and it was during that viewing that I began to understand why the play is produced all over the country every year at Christmastime. The night I saw the show, Scrooge, as always, threw open his shutters to discover he had not in fact missed Christmas Day after all. In a moment of silence, a solitary peal of laughter erupted from one small child in a far off balcony. The sound was so delightful and unexpected that it elicited an unscripted and heartily genuine laugh from the actor playing Scrooge, which was then followed by a giant and lasting laugh from the entire audience. Suddenly there was unity that can only be found in the magic of live theatre. It was a moment that I will never forget. But it wasn’t until I performed the show here at The Hipp and began to study the text that I understood what I believe to be the true message of the story; that childlike wonder is not only redemptive but vital to living a full and happy life. Scrooge himself was once a child and through his journey he is forced to confront the little buggers in one way or another at every turn. The plucky Cratchit children and their playful father, the poor carolers in his shop, Fred and his friends playing games as children do, and the “turkey kid,” (as we call the character here at The Hipp) all help him regain the joy and peace that come with childlike wonder. Scrooge’s heart finally cracks open for good when he is forced to face a future in which there is no Tiny Tim and in which Scrooge’s life comes to an end before he can attempt to do anything about it.

The children in the cast are my favorite part of working on this show for exactly the same reason that they are essential to Scrooge’s redemption: they remind me to see the world with new eyes. Their curiosity and excitement is infectious. Their hunger to learn and grow as young theatre artists reminds those of us who are more seasoned of how we first felt about the stage. Their boisterous laughter echoes through the halls of the building so sonorously that the ghosts of all of our Hippodrome Christmas Carols past cannot but help to rejoice in the sound.

May we all be reminded of the value of our children and hold them in high regard this holiday season; they have much to teach us about being human.

The Hippodrome is thrilled to have you here with us for our season Beyond Limits as we celebrate the spirit that founded the artistic heart of our community, beating right here in downtown.

From its inception in 1973, the Hippodrome Theatre has brought stories to the stage that explore and celebrate the human condition. 50 years ago six determined individuals, (Marilyn Wall, Bruce Cornwell, Greg Von Hausch, Kerry (McKinney) Oliver Smith, Mary Hausch , Orin Wechsberg) took a leap into the unknown, creating a theater that challenged expectations.

Throughout its history, The Hippodrome has pushed the limits of storytelling, creating memorable productions like Equus, The Elephant Man, Amadeus, The Royal, and The Mountaintop. The Hippodrome Improvisational Teen Theatre (HITT), Open Stages and TYA (Theater for Young Audiences) brought innovative works beyond the walls of the theater and into the Gainesville schools and community, proving that theater is an important tool that can be used to explore deep issues, educate, and spark discussion.

The Hippodrome Theatre’s 50th season Beyond Limits continues storytelling outside the norm, producing stories that challenge our assumptions, and reminding all of us that there are no limits to what we can do and who we can be. The Hippodrome also continues to explore new ways of bringing storytelling and the community together. By pushing the limits through its New Works Festival celebrating Floridian voices and stories, our educational Summer Spectacular and outreach programs creating the artists of tomorrow, and the Hipp Unplugged series that fosters new playwrights, new directors, and helps us grow the talent right here in our community.

Our founding history and energetic present will continue to launch us beyond all limits as we move into the future. Come take this journey with us as we leap joyfully into our next 50 years.

Who’s Who

Laura Shatkus is a director, actor, producer, and writer originally from Chicago where she worked and trained for a decade before receiving an MFA in Acting from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where she currently resides. Most recently, she directed Second Nature for Opera Fayetteville, Englebert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel for the University of Arkansas’ Opera Theatre Department, and new media spots for International Women’s Day as well as several new works in progress for The Hippodrome. Also at The Hipp she has appeared in A Christmas Carol, 1984, Ripcord, and Miracle on South Division Street as well as several new works in progress and devised and adapted a reading of The Walmart Book of The Dead by Lucy Biederman. In 2020, Laura co created and co produced Hold Fast, a site specific theatre piece devised, delivered, and performed at households and community sites in pandemic isolation in Northwest Arkansas. Look for her on the big and small screens in Paramount+’s Tulsa King, a new series starring Sylvester Stalone, Mindcage (Lionsgate, December 2022), Follow Your Heart (Hallmark), and Freedom’s Path.

Gregg returns to the Hipp for his twenty fifth run of A Christmas Carol. Before playing Scrooge, he had the ultimate pleasure of playing Jacob Marley opposite Hippodrome legend, Rusty Salling, for 16 years. Mr. Jones has appeared on the Hippodrome stage since the 1978 79 season when he first appeared in They Shoot Horses Don’t They? Since then, he has played various roles in more than 50 productions at the theatre including: (Tom) Dinner With Friends, (Salvador Dali) Hysteria, (Adrian) Private Eyes, (Leslie, Phyllis and Tom) Sylvia, (Sid Caesar) Laughter on the 23rd Floor, (Det. Nick Rosetti) Shear Madness (2 Runs), (Adrian) Stage Kiss, (Walter Flood) Becky’s New Car. Film and television: Waterways, Miami Vice, A Flash of Green and Coastlines (Victor Nunez). Gregg is a former Santa Fe College theatre faculty where he taught for 28 years, retiring in 2015, and a proud member of Actors’ Equity (1974) and SAG AFTRA (1985).

Niall is a proud ensemble member of the Hippodrome. Hippodrome credits include Fahrenheit 451 (Montag), As You Like It (Touchstone), Lone Star Spirits (Ben), Miracle on South Division Street (Jimmy), Ripcord (Derek), 1984 (Winston), Hamlet (Laertes), Peter & the Starcatcher (Peter), Eurydice (Orpheus), The Glass Menagerie (Tom), Romeo and Juliet (Romeo), The Diary of Anne Frank (Peter), The Play About the Baby (Boy), Proof (Hal), Macbeth (Ross). He has also, in various ways (acting, directing, & adapting), been involved in A Christmas Carol at the Hippodrome for 9 years. Chicago credits include work at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Victory Gardens, TimeLine Theatre, Griffin Theatre, Eclipse Theatre, Lifeline Theatre, & 16 th St Theatre. A Christmas Carol is Kelly’s fourteen production at the Hippodrome. Some past favorites include The Toxic Avenger, Hand to God, the title role in Alice in Wonderland, and two productions of The Great American Trailer Park Musical as Pippi, the stripper. Most recently, she appeared here at the Hipp as Raquel de Angelis in Living on Love, and as Florence Foster Jenkins in Souvenir, and at the Alhambra Theatre as Donna in Mamma Mia. Other notable performances: Hello, Dolly with Sally Struthers, Lend Me a Tenor with Jamie Farr, world premiere of Amorous Crossing with Loretta Swit. Film/ TV: Recount, America’s Most Wanted, numerous commercials, guest hosting on Designing Spaces. Concert engagements: soloist with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Opera Theatre of Connecticut, national finalist in the American Traditions Vocal Competition.

Tom Vazquez is a second year MFA in Acting candidate at the University of Florida, happy to be returning to the Hippodrome mainstage (previous Hippodrome credits include two staged readings: Bootycandy for the Hipp Unplugged Series, and Evie and Loren for the 2022 New Works Festival). Chaya Weiser is very excited to be playing Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol this year. This is her first time on the Hippodrome stage. Chaya has performed at Curtis M. Philips Center for the Performing Arts in ballet and jazz productions. She participates in dance, competitive cheer, cheers for PK Yonge, plays violin, piano and enjoys gymnastics. My name is Aidan. I aspire to be a soldier when I grow up. I love singing Hamilton and building models. I love musicals and the play Fahrenheit 451 as well as the Million dollar quartet.

Yosef has performed as Raging Waters Indian in Peter Pan at High Springs Community Playhouse and Lion in Shrek at Star Center Theater, among other roles. Yosef loves to play basketball, tennis and baseball and is learning how to play violin.

Ana Muñoz (they/them) is so excited to make their Hippodrome debut! As a stage manager, Ana has worked at Cleveland Playhouse (OH), the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (AL), TheatreSquared (AR), Trans Theatre Fest Madison (WI), and Purple Victory (AL). Robert P. Robins^ (Production Manager/Lighting Designer)

Bob is enjoying his 39th season here at the Hippodrome, where he has designed lighting for over 700 Hippodrome productions and events. He has worn many Hipp hats throughout the decades: Lighting Designer, Production Manager, Facility Manger, IT Manager, AEA Stage Manager, TYA Tour Stage Manager, Safety Officer, Intern Recruiter, Light Board Operator, Sound Mixer, Mainstage State Tour Technical Director, and Bartender, just to name a few. Bob also continues to provide lighting designs throughout the country, working with clients that include architects, theatres, dance companies, industrial events, schools, colleges and universities, municipalities, various types of small and large companies, and homeowners. He proudly holds a BFA in Theatre Production from the University of Florida.

Amanda Nipper (Sound Designer)

Amanda is thrilled to be in her tenth season at the Hippodrome. Other regional credits include Cape Fear Regional Theatre: Jesus Christ Superstar, Legally Blonde: The Musical, and The Parchman Hour: Songs and Stories of the ’61 Freedom Riders, and as the mix engineer in Fayetteville, North Carolina at Dorset Theatre Festival: Keep moving forward.

Bill Boothman (Master Electrician)

Bill joined the Hippodrome as Master Electrician in September of 2019. Six months later the pandemic would be in full swing, and Bill would become a videographer/editor for the Hippodrome’s virtual productions. Favorite productions from this time include This Wonderful Life and Shakespeare, Thou Art Translated. Before getting into technical theatre Bill earned an AA in Anthropology from Santa Fe College, a BA in Sociology from Florida State University, and studied Chinese Language and Culture at Tianjin Foreign Studies University. After a brief (and expensive) detour to graduate school for Museum Studies, Bill went on to earn an AS in Theatre and Entertainment Technology at Florida State College at Jacksonville. Favorite productions worked as a student include Young Frankenstein as Props Designer, Stalking Ottis Toole: A Southern Gothic as Master Electrician, and Peter and the Wolf as Lighting

Designer. After graduating from FSCJ, Bill worked full time as a union stagehand with IATSE local 115 in Jacksonville, FL. Bill is an art and music hobbyist.

Erin Jester (Costume Designer/Shop Supervisor)

Erin is delighted to return to the Hippodrome for its 50th season. Erin is a UF alumna and a former Hippodrome costumes intern (2015 16 and 2016 17 seasons), and in 2020 received her MFA in costume design and technology from the University of Southern Mississippi. Previous costume design credits include productions of Cabaret, Much Ado About Nothing and Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses. Other credits include costume historical research for North Carolina State University’s Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies, historical costume reproduction for the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel, MS, and costume coordination for the Moscow Ballet’s The Great Russian Nutcracker and the independent film series 12 Westerns in 12 Months, directed by Travis Mills.

Mihai Ciupe^ (Scenic Designer)

Originally from Romania, Mihai Ciupe received a double MFA degree in costume and set design from Carnegie MellonUniversity and his BFA from Art and Design University of Cluj Napoca, Romania. During his MFA he was awarded the George Kimberly Scene Design Award and the Oren Parker Award in Design and Production. Prior to the United States he was resident scenographer at The National Theatre of Cluj, Romania. During his former years he traveled extensively in Europe in tours with the shows that he designed, getting exposure to the various schools of theatre from England, Scotland, Hungary, France, and Yugoslavia. As a designer he worked with some of the greatest Romanian directors: Gabor Tompa, Alexandru Dabija, Iulian Visa, Mihai Manutiu, Victor Ion Frunza. In 1991 he received a scholarship to attend The London International Festival of Theatre. Since 1995 he is a member of The United Association of the Romanian Fine Artists in the scenography section. In 1999 he joined the theatre and dance faculty at University of Florida, where he was assigned to start the graduate program in Set Design. By 2013 his graduate students won The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Award three times: in 2005, 2007 and 2013. During his tenure at UF he has built a strong artistic relationship with The Hippodrome State Theatre, the only professional theatre in North Central Florida, where he has designed the sets for over twenty five productions. He has continued to work professionally at national and international level.

Paul Helm* (Music Coordinator)

Paul has performed, directed and music directed with the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Florida Studio Theatre, freeFall Theatre Company, First Stage Children’s Theater, Sacramento Theatre Company, Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Midland Center for theArts, and Bucknell University. Recent credits include High School Musical, A Charlie BrownChristmas, Bright Star, Big River, The Fantasticks, Souvenir, Crazy for You, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Cocoanuts, Spring Awakening, Big Fish and Forever Plaid. He was also a vocalist for Disney on Classic, a three month symphony concert

tour of Japan with the Tokyo PhilharmonicOrchestra. Paul is currently reprising his role as Marcus Moscowicz in the Hippodrome’s production of Murder for Two: Holiday Edition. www.paulhelm.net

Susan Schuld (Voice & Dialect Coach)

Susan has been acting and vocal coaching nationally for over 25 years and is an Associate Professor of Voice and Speech here at the School of Theatre and Dance. M.F.A in Acting from Rutgers University, Designated Linklater Teacher, Certified Teacher of Knight Thompson Speechwork, and a National Michael Chekhov Association Teacher.

Warren Goodwin (Technical Director)

Warren joined the Hippodrome in 2004 as a carpenter in the scene shop, and assumed the role of Master Carpenter in 2006. In addition to helping build over a hundred of Hippodrome sets, Warren served as co scenic designer on The Christians and The Wolves. He is thrilled to be currently serving as Technical Director.
