Celebrating the Holidays It’s the holiday season and we wish love and joy and music and laughter be a part of your celebrations this year. And we couldn’t think of a better expression of these elements than Miracle on 34th Street. This beautiful classical story of faith and hope set in 1947 radio studio has gorgeous tight jazz renditions of holiday music as well as brilliant takes on the old commercials from the 30’s and 40’s (who knew tupperware could sound so cool!). The designers, cast, and crew have loved every minute working on this radio play. But what exactly is a radio play? You will probably be familiar with the most famous radio play, Orson Welles War of the Worlds, but basically radio drama uses sound to convey ideas to the audience. Actors can play more than one part from moment to moment as only voice needs to be altered. And of course there are the live sound effects, or foley as we call it. Foley is the most difficult and most fun part of any radio play. How do we create the world the characters live in only through sound? Even today movies use foley to add layers of realistic sounds. Who knew that corn starch in a cloth sack sounds like footsteps in the snow? Or a bicycle wheel spun over cardboard sounds like a car engine? Just wait till you see all we have come up with. We hope you enjoy Miracle on 34th Street The Radio Play as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. The Hippodrome believes in theater, and has faith in live storytelling and in our community. And just like Kris Kringle and Susie Walker, we know you believe in us too. Happy Holidays, joy and peace to you all. Stephanie Lynge
The Hippodrome Theatre is a first-class regional theatre and artistic space committed to excellence in North Florida and creates programming that reflects and elevates the diverse cultures and perspectives of our region as well as create and maintain ongoing engagement with our community. But what is a regional theater? Regional theater is a permanent nonprofit professional theatre company that has established roots outside the major theatre centers. Besides bringing first-rate theatre to our region, we often have programs to nurture local talent and to encourage new plays of special regional interest. But what makes professional theater different from community theater or educational theatre?
In a professional theatre everyone associated with a production, from directors, technicians, designers, and actors, are paid for their time and talent. And while community and educational theater provide opportunities for the community to take an active role in all phases of theater, our professional regional theater hires professionals who are highly trained and, at least during the production, the production is their full time job. This allows the theater to produce high quality productions very quickly - in less than three weeks! As the artistic center of downtown Gainesville, The Hippodrome, your regional professional theater, will continue to search for new forms and new theatrical voices, support local community talent, bring in the highest quality professionals, and continue to encourage creativity and diversity in all of its performance spaces. Stephanie Lynge^ (Hippodrome’s Artistic Director)
