DIRECTOR’ NOTES ON SEX WITH STRANGERS

Director’s Notes: Sex with Strangers, by Laura Eason, is a layered, complicated

look at relationships and technology in today’s society. Does technology enhance our relationships, allowing us to link with a myriad of people with whom we would not otherwise be able to communicate? Or does it cut us off from more traditional, more authentic connections? With handheld devices, no matter who we talk to, we are in a triangulated relationship. Both the upside and downside of technology are explored in this play but it’s essentially about two people trying to grow beyond their limitations. Olivia struggles with questions asked by many female artists -- “Will my voice be heard?” and “I had a chance for my voice to be heard and it didn’t go well – will I get another?” This is an understandable dilemma for women who often don’t get the opportunity to fail. Ethan tries to break out of the man-child character whose success has trapped him but as he struggles to be “an adult,” it seems the bar is ever rising. Just when we think we are grownups, when we have a job and an apartment, more milestones appear and the rug is pulled out from under us. When do we get to become who we truly want to be? Laura Eason is a wonderful playwright who doesn’t leave us with easy answers as to who is right and wrong. I hope you enjoy getting to know Oliva and Ethan. And I hope you find connection and compassion for them both.
