THE BLAMELESS DIRECTOR’S NOTES Columbine, Sandy Hook, the Pulse Nightclub, Tree of life Synogogue, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Las Vegas, Parkland , El Paso and Dayton. And I don’t even have to explain what happened. We all know. This play is not about the politics of guns or the bills and activism from both sides. We may all have our positions, but this play is about what happens afterwards. How do the families survive, heal, and move forward after the media has moved on to the next story? That all too human factor -- our loss and struggle -- is something everyone, no matter what their political view, can understand and empathize. Playwright Nick Gandiello searched for a way to talk about gun violence in America and how it affected us all, but every time he started writing, it came out as a play that was unbearably painful. Then he met his wife. She had lost her brother and the real, honest, and painful journey of her family inspired Nick to write The Blameless from the perspective of life after the tragedy; how can it go on? As part of our Breaking Boundries season, I hope that this play will bring us together so that we can share our humanity and our hopes with each other. In the end, there is more that binds us together than rips us apart and we are stronger and safer when we remember we are a community together. At a makeshift memorial in Newtown, Connecticut, the site of the Sandy Hook shooting that took the lives of…, there was only one remembrance for Nancy Lanza, the mother of the shooter. On a piece of yellow paper read the following: Others now share pain for choices you faced alone; may the blameless among us throw the first stone.
