out to the Fair! The carnival opens on Tuesday, Sept. 2 and the Fair kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 4. Both Fair and carnival run through Saturday, Sept. 6. As always, the Fair will be at the Pontotoc County Fairgrounds in Ada. The fairgrounds are located adjacent to the Agri-Plex on the corner of Lonnie Abbott Industrial Boulevard and North Broadway. The carnival offers lots of great rides for kids young and not-so-young. On Saturday, the carnival will open at 2 p.m. and continue through midnight. Carnival goers can buy armbands that provide access to all rides throughout the day. The Fair obviously offers the premier venue for youngsters to exhibit their prize livestock. There will also be plenty of 4-H exhibits and entries from across the county. All the entertainment will happen at the convention center and the outdoor stage. A free concert at the outdoor stage will feature local entertainer Clancy Davis and Friends beginning at 8 p.m. Friday. Book Review
Quantum Wellness: A Practical and Spiritual Guide to Health and Happiness by Kathy Freston Kathy Freston is a best selling author of several books. She has appeared on many television talk shows, been featured in several magazines, and produced a series of guided mediation CDs on relationships, healing the body, creating prosperity, losing weight, and distressing. This newest book foreword by Dr. Mehmet Oz and the statement that Freston’s advise is not a substitute for
medical advise. Freston says that “Quantum wellness isn’t about deprivation and it’s not about perfection. It is about pointing yourself in the direction of growth, training yourself to get comfortable with your highest potential, and then taking small steps to support that shift.” Freston examines eight pillars of wellness: meditation visualization, fun activities, conscious eating, exercise, self-work, spiritual practice, and service. It also has several simple vegetarian recipes are at the back of the book. Freston’s book is well written and unique in its focus on wellness and your body, mind, and spirit connection. One of the Fair’s Finest. by Roy Deering
Katherine Floyd refers to herself as an oldfashioned “homemaker.” She still adores traditional “women’s” activities like sewing, baking and canning. “I love all those things, and I guess I always have,” Mrs. Floyd said. She is a retired Latta School employee and member of various Pontotoc County Extension groups. “I guess my favorite is sewing, but I also love to bake and to cook, and I even still do some canning,” she said. “I think those things, sadly, are lost arts with today’s young girls.” Once again this fall, Mrs. Floyd will volunteer her time working at the Pontotoc County Free Fair – something she’s done since 1955. It was then that Mrs. Floyd joined her first extension group. “I’ve seen a lot of pies and cakes and quilts through the years at the fair,” she said. “I love being there and admiring all the incredible things the women of this area create.” Mrs. Floyd said she would once again help set up various booths at the Fair this year, work once again in the County Kitchen, and perform shift work where she’s needed to help make the fair run more smoothly. “I love to enter things in the Fair,” she said. “That’s a lot of fun, and I can’t begin to tell you how many ribbons I’ve won in 50 years. But it’s really other people’s creations that I love to see. I truly admire the talents of our women.” A longtime member of the Latta extension group, Mrs. Floyd has now aligned herself with the extension group from the Vanoss area. Along with the activities at the Free Fair, Mrs. Floyd said she cherished all
the friendships she had made through the extension service. “I’ve had some dear friends along the way, many of whom are no longer with us,” Mrs. Floyd said. “I think the fellowship with these other women through the years is one of the things I am beginning to appreciate more and more as time goes by. There aren’t many of the old faces still around, but it’s been a very special opportunity to grow so close through the years.” Now 81, Mrs. Floyd said she specifically appreciated the talents of the many fine quilters in the Ada area. She said the talent to create a beautiful quilt was something not everyone had. “It’s a God-given talent, there’s no doubt,” Mrs. Floyd said. “I’ve always been amazed at the quilts these women come up with – the stories behind each quilt and all the work that goes into them. It’s truly amazing, and that’s one of my favorite parts of the Fair - the quilt show.” In addition to her work in the Vanoss extension group, Mrs. Floyd has become a devoted member of Country Women of the World – an organization that celebrates rural homemakers and their lifestyle. “That’s been a wonderful group and I’ve really enjoyed becoming a part of it,” Mrs. Floyd said. She will attend the group’s national conference in Hot Springs, Arkansas in September. Mrs. Floyd and her husband, Charles, have four children – Jan Manuel, Kay Pinley, Randy Floyd and Sue Hamilton – all who still live in Pontotoc County. “Being a wife and mother and a homemaker has been a tremendous blessing from God,” Mrs. Floyd said. “I’ve loved being a part of the extension groups for so long, and I’ve made some great friends and had a lot of fun. But, if there’s one thing extension has helped me understand it’s that nothing in this world is more important than God and family.”

AdaHUB.com Zen Ties
kid’sBook Review
By Jon J. Muth
Stillwater, the giant loveable Panda bear welcomes his haiku speaking nephew, Koo, for a summer of fun. Stillwater introduces Koo to his friends Addy, Michael, and Karl. Together they agree to help out a grouchy ailing neighbor, Mrs. Whitaker. As they
reach out in friendship and share with Mrs. Whitaker, she opens up and shares her expertise with Michael who is preparing for a spelling bee. Children grades 1-5 will enjoy the soft watercolor illustrations and haiku poetry. The themes intertwine to remind us that we all need ties with family and friends to make our lives complete. Zen Ties is a companion story to Zen Shorts Muth’s Caldecott Honor winning book published in 2006. Both stories feature the gentle and wise Giant Panda named Stillwater.
