By: M. Lynne Squires

...at Charleston Sternwheel Regatta

In 1971, a 12-year-old boy had a chat with the then-mayor of Charleston, John Hutchinson. Young Nelson Jones wanted to see Charleston have a sternwheeler race on Labor Day on the Kanawha River. Jones family-owned Amherst Industries, a marine towing, construction, and repair company, provided the barges alongside the levy where the sternwheelers were moored.

lous Thunderbirds, Michael McDonald, The Georgia Satellites (2), Billy Preston, Greg Kihn Band, Great White, Kansas, Dr. John, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Quiet Riot, Copper, Bowling for Soup, Collective Soul, Blue Oyster Cult, The Fixx, Mollie Hatchet, Julian Lennon, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Warrant, Hydrogen, Gin Blossoms, The Wreckers, Fuel, Rev Theory, Puddle of Mud, Blues Traveler.

The Regatta was expanded to a two-day festival within two years of its inception. By the early 1980s, the Regatta lasted a week, and in a few years, was ten days long. The end-of-summer festival attracted thousands of local people and many out-of-towner river lovers who came to see the big boats race.

The Charleston Distance Run was the brainchild of Don Cohen, a Charleston eye doctor. He wanted to add a distance run to the Sternwheel Regatta, and after working with the city officials and police, a course was developed. The inaugural year saw 213 runners, but within two years, the number swelled to over 1,308. The run is classified as a road race, not a half-marathon. At 15 miles long, it remains the only race of that length in the US.

While the races were the highlight of the Regatta, the organizers added numerous events both on the river and the area surrounding the levee. River activities included the Pushers and Shover’s contest, Whistle Blowing Contest, Line Handlers Contest, the Anything That Floats Race, a Rubber Ducky race, a swimming competition, and of course, the Sternwheel races. Land activities were varied and plentiful. Food and beer vendors, parades, music, fireworks, and the Charleston Distance Run. The music was the evening highlight every night. Visitors to the levee were able to see acts free of charge. Even a partial list of acts through the years is impressive: John Hartford, The Temptations, Marshall Tucker (2appearances), The Statler Brothers, The Commadores, Poco, Quarterflash, The Beach Boys, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, Michael McDonald, Kathy Mattea (2), Meatloaf (2), Charlie Daniels Band (4), Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons, Cheap Trick, The Four Tops, The Guess Who, Willie Nelson (2), Three Dog Night (2), Blood Sweat and Tears, Ray Charles, Survivor, Jefferson Starship (3), Three Dog Night, Alabama, The Fabu-

The number of sternwheelers varied over the years. The Delta Queen graced the banks of the Kanawha River a few years. Pleasure craft covered the river, with several hundred often gathered to hear the music or watch the fireworks. The Sternwheel Regatta continued until 2009. Issues with sponsor funding, lower participation by sternwheelers, and increasing interest in other city attractions, such as FestivALL, led to the demise of the Regatta. In 2019, Charleston’s first woman mayor, Amy Shuler Goodwin, took office. She was approached many times by people wanting to bring back the Regatta. In the fall of 2021, Mayor Goodwin announced the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta would return on the Fourth of July weekend in 2022. Once again, the Kanawha River will be alive with the sights and sounds of a Regatta.

We’re continually on the hunt for opportunities to add richness to our lives. In the time of the road trip revival, we are proud to feature a monthly section featuring destinations within driving distance of Charleston that make for a great getaway. We feel that our worldly and devoted readers will find these places interesting.

Driving a little less than two hours southeast of Charleston, West Virginia, brings you to Lewisburg, nestled in the Allegheny Mountains and named Coolest Town in America in the past. Not only does Lewisburg pack a powerful punch, but it is also a great getaway to transport you somewhere unique that won’t break the bank with rising gas prices. Indulge in a dose of fresh mountain air, feast on gourmet grub, take in the arts and history and have a lovely weekend in a town that thrives on being a community leader and West Virginia jewel.

WHAT TO SEE & DO IN LEWISBURG Lewisburg is cram-packed with offerings from exploring history to shopping high-end locally-owned boutiques. The Main Street in Lewisburg (Washington) is lined with intriguing shops, manicured parks, and gorgeous flower displays. Shops I recommend seeing are Yarid’s 16 CharlestonHomeandLiving.com | APRIL 2022 016.0422.indd 2

(great shoes), Edith’s (natural and holistic foods), Wolf Creek Gallery and Studio 40 (ladies apparel), Harmony Ridge (glassware, jewelry), and A New Chapter Bookstore. A special find is the wine shop in the back of Robert’s Antiques, offering some 700 kinds of wine and beer. WHERE TO STAY IN LEWISBURG There is great diversity for lodging choices in Lewisburg, ranging from very affordable at the Motel M Lewisburg, just right off the highway, to the General Lewis Inn, the premier luxury accommodations in town that date back to the 19th century. Be sure to check out the craft cocktails at the Inn, too. Middle ground options include Hampton Inn and Home2Suites by Hilton, both with a pool and complimentary breakfast. Rates run around $100 per night.

Landmark and a family favorite in the Greenbrier Valley. The caverns are a wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites 120′ below the earth. Dress appropriately—the temperature is low 50s year-round. Self-guided tours are 45 minutes long and cost $12 for adults $6 for kids.

closed on weekends. Stardust Cafe (closed on Sunday) gets my vote for eclectic sandwich creations and salads for lunch. Across the street is Thunderbird Taco for guacamole, vegetarian fare, and upscale Mexican favorites. For something old-school and fun, Jim’s on Route 60 has burgers, fries, hot dogs, shakes, and cobblers, plus you can experience car-hop service.

Washington Street Quarters is a nice pick for comfortably outfitted rooms with modern amenities within walking distance to almost everything mentioned above.

Visit the Greenbrier Historical Society and North House Museum for the latest AfricanAmerican history and local textiles exhibits. If cemetery visits are in your wheelhouse, you’ll appreciate the headstones on the gravesites in the Confederate Cemetery, circa the Civil War era. Pencil in a drive to the Hern Mills Covered Bridge for photo-ops if you want the quintessential “Almost Heaven” town offering. First Fridays highlight Lewisburg’s diverse and impressive arts and culture, with shops open late, entertainment, and refreshments. Notable events in Lewisburg include the 14th annual Lewisburg Chocolate Festival on April 9th, Healing Appalachia in September (a mission to raise funds and awareness to celebrate recovery the 23-24th), and West Virginia State Fair August 11-20th, chock full of food, games, entertainment, and big-name concerts.

For a more rugged adventure, consider Greenbrier River Campground & Cabins (RV sites, too), where you can also rent boats, canoes, kayaks, and tubes. Photo by Melody Pittman.

Food and Friends is your go-to for steaks, classic entrees, and bread pudding with butter rum sauce, Livery Tavern for farm-totable meals, or Stardust Cafe for pasta, lamb, and chicken dishes. The French Goat would be a fine dining experience— a raved-about bougie eatery with exotic choices, such as seasonal oysters, garlic escargot, and a Sunday brunch featuring duck confit Benedicts, quiche, and Croque Madame. Reservations are recommended regardless of where you pick.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK The Wild Bean is excellent for coffee, pastries, and wraps for breakfast. The Jefferson Dining Room at the General Lewis Inn has a weekend brunch with mimosas and Bloody Marys for a fancier breakfast option. If you arrive in Lewisburg on a weekday, try Corn + Flour, a magnificent local bakery with bagels, cinnamon rolls, and muffins, but they are
