From The Editor's Pen Hello, His Favor Teen Readers! The Summer is OVER!

I do not know about you, but this summer flew by to me! One minute I was hoping to plan my summer vacation, the next I was getting school supplies for my daughter. She is only going to the 4th grade, but it still seems like she was telling me it was her last day of school. As most of you are going back to school or already began, I would like to challenge to reflect on your life at this very moment. Reflect? Yes. Reflect. Time waits for no one one. It is important to enjoy your youth, but keep in mind, everyday you are getting older. Take time off of social media (I know it might be hard, even for me) and set goals and write the vision. Many people have no clue what they want to do in life. They roam the earth aimlessly and just living each day without knowing their purpose. I love this magazine because it not only highlights your generation and the wonderful things you are doing, but it also encourages those that might need a little push. A push to want to discover their God-given role. A push to want to do better. You do not have to wait until you are old to do what God has called you to do. Just like Timothy, you can play a vital part in the body of Christ. Being a young person is hard enough! Trust me I know. However, I thank God for some of the experiences I had. Being on the praise team, a youth leader and even going on a mission trip all before the age of 18. I am not going to lie, life took some crazy turns for me, but I alway knew I was destined for something great. Guess what? So Are You! You have what it takes to fulfill your purpose. As the Bible states, never let anyone downgrade the fact that you are young. You can do so much! I also encourage you to find a mentor if you have not done so already. A spiritual mentor and one that has proven success in the area of your interest. Allow then to coach you! You will thank me later in life! ~Sheneè Woodson, Visionary/Editor In Chief

I wanted to challenge others to not focus on their present circumstances but instead look to the God who is everpresent in the midst of those circumstances. Jesus called Peter out of his boat to walk on a substance he had no business walking upon. The moment Peter took his focus off of Christ and looked at the storms all around him, he sank. It’s no different with us. If we look to Christ to be our strength in the midst of difficulty, we will find ourselves rising above the water. I can’t promise the circumstances will change, but one thing I can promise is that His love will surround you in the midst of the storms. It sounds cliche, but His love truly is enough!

Husband, Father, Youth Leader & Man of Integrity First of all it’s an honor to be interviewed by “His Favor” TEEN magazine. Thank you for having me! I’m good! Glory to God! Riding my ups & downs on life’s rollercoaster! I actually realized I wanted to minister to young people when I came back to Christ in 2011. I grew up in the church but was very, very shy. I le t the Lord right a ter high school. So when I came back to the Lord, about 7 years later, I wanted to do so many things in the youth but I was almost thirty. So in a couple of years, I found myself listening to a lot of good preachers and thought to myself “I think I can do that! I’m funnier than that guy” lol. So I began Bible Institute which is so much fun. There was a time where the power of God saturated a service that I will never forget is at a Winter Fest with at least 500 youth in 2013. The Fire Team Leader, which the team was responsible for prayer at the whole event, volunteered me to minister. She didn’t even ask me, she just told me to do it. This was actually the first time I ever ministered. I was so scared, afraid, and nervous. I didn’t know what to say to the kids I would be praying for, and I was also afraid I would say the wrong thing during the prayer. However, when the Ministering was done, I felt such a huge joy and the Power of God upon me. It was the most beautiful feeling in my life! And it is like that every time I minister. Today, I would tell a young man struggling with his identity in Christ to start reading the Bible in 1 Samuel Chapter 16 where the story of David begins. You would be amazed at his story and how his identity is founded in Christ, even a ter messing up so many times. This leads into having integrity. It is a very important factor in life. Integrity is being honest, being a person of your word, having moral principles, and as a Christian having Godly principles. Letting your “yes be yes” and your “no be no”. You’d be surprised as to how even worldly people respect that! #

On Saturday, June 9, His Favor TEEN Magazine stopped by the GLOW conference in Alexandria, VA. It was a wonderful experience for young girls ages 12-14. They were empowered and even expressed their concerns about their purpose, careers and various relationships. As I walked in, I was ecstatic to see young ladies placed in different groups. Each group had a different speaker. However, they were all engaged and the expressions on their faces told that they were truly receiving what was being spoken to them. During a nice lunch, it was time for the girls to express themselves as well ask questions. It was great to see the speakers being open to answer each question. Even the young ladies that seemed a bit shy at first, eventually had input and shared. The topic that seemed to spark most of their interest was how to recognize their purpose.

At such young ages, most of them already knew what they wanted to be when they grew up. Ranging from lawyers, professional singers and scientists, it was evident that they were already on a great path to achieve their goals. Yet, choosing a career to knowing their purpose was still a hot question. Another thing I truly enjoyed was the way the founder allowed the other speakers and volunteers to have input. With so many people with different backgrounds and experiences, it takes a true leader to know that one person cannot do it all. It also let me see that for different situations, required specific speakers to answer. I recommend any young lady to go to this event in 2020 and beyond. It is very needed. Kudos to Kinite McCrae for the vision. Your impact deserves to be applauded. Not only as the visionary, but the other women that participated. Sylvia Koonce, Joan Henry-Fields, Dr. Yolanda Jerry, Markeeta Robinson and Wanda Rawlings your willingness to come together from other states is mindblowing. To know that it all started from a small Facebook chat. We never know who God joins together to make impact on the lives of others. I am certain these young ladies are saying "THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!"

The name Islande’ Beauty embodies the true essence of confidence. This company was created in order to help individuals build their confidence by creating a space for people to easily access information on hair products containing natural ingredients. Our passion is to empower girls through education and our objective is to present workshops on the importance of natural ingredients and their effects on the skin, including the scalp. We also seek to educate women and girls on the importance of establishing a healthy hair routine. As a brand, our most important task is to empower girls to feel confident in their abilities, to take care of their hair, and to be leaders in their communities. It's all about finding inner beauty, building confidence, and creating healthy self-esteem. My inspiration to make the hair growth oil started because my hair wasn't growing at a comfortable rate. During this time, I strug led with self-esteem, self-acceptance, and selfconfidence, therefore, I wanted to create something to support my hair growth problems and also support other girls who may be suffering in silence. You see as a teenage girl, our appearance is everything and I wanted to come up with a solution and to educate our youth on the importance of what we put in and on our body.

Thank you for taking the time to speak to our readers. First of all, how are you? I am doing fine. I am getting ready to start high school this fall as well as launch my business in the same week. Some may say that I am crazy, but I am ambitious. It was important for me to launch on September 4, because it is my grandmother’s birthday and this is one way that I can honor her memory.

Z h a n y i a

Tell us, when did you realize you wanted to start your own business? I believe when I attend my first Entrepreneurship Camp in 2017. We had the opportunity to create a business and market our products at a street fair. During this fair, my group made over $300 in profit. That was my first time actually creating something and making money. That was a good feeling. We even got the opportunity to pitch our business in a “Shark Tank” style pitch competition and the team took first place at the pitch competition and won most profitable at the street fair, so when received even more money.

M c C u l l o u g h

How are you balancing being an entrepreneur vs. having time to be a "teenager"? I am still trying to figure that out. That’s one of the challenges that I have. So I am considering trying to schedule out my time moving forward going into high school. I want to have actual business hours where I can create products, fill orders, and work on my social media. And then I can have time to hang out with friends. Did I mention that I am apart of a travel dance team? So I’m not sure if I can say that I have balance, but I do find time to do the things that I enjoy. What would you say to another young person that is struggling with their identity? You are fearfully and wonderfully made. God created you with your own personality and purpose. Know that you were created for greatness. Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. Learn from your mistakes and Own Your Beauty!!! Are there any other ventures we should expect from you in the near future? Yes. I am working on new hair products now. The goal is to have a complete hair collection with shampoo, conditioners, and styling products. I am also putting together a workshop where I can teach other girls how to create hair products and inspire them to own their beauty. In addition, I will be working on a book in the near future. 9

"I am very excited to be featured in your publication. It is now the end of summer break and I am preparing to go back to school. This year I am a sophomore in high school"

~Anaya Fernando, Owner

THE DESIRE I have been wanting to be an entrepreneur since I was about 4. I used to sell snacks after church and I used to beg my mom to create me a logo so I could have a huge yard sale. I love the freedom and the room to be creative when you are an entrepreneur. Ultimately, I see entrepreneurship from three perspectives; being my own boss, (eventually) being able to create jobs for others, and being in a position to provide help to people that are less fortunate.

THE VISION I was sitting at home with my mom and my older cousin when we somehow came up with the business concept. We sat for hours brainstorming on that particular day. From there we eventually came up with the name because we want everything to be fun and sweet. Some of our products look like deserts (doughnuts, cupcakes, sundaes, and macaron). THE FUTURE Yes, we are expanding our product offerings and working on a number of new innovative things for our followers and customers. I will also be doing a number of expos, and pop-up events in the future. I was also blessed to be featured in a 2020 entrepreneur calendar that will be available very soon. We have a lot in store and I am very excited about the future of Sugar Sweet Bath + Body Treats. THE ADVICE I am a Christian so my first response to any of my peers would be to pray and listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying. God is always willing to guide us and give us direction if we listen. Also, she should consider what she likes and is passionate about. I remember my mom saying that what comes easy to a person can be an indication of what they are supposed to do in life. #

INTRODUCTION

J U D E

Born: December 28, 1987, St. Louis, Missouri Christopher Scott Williams, better known by his stage name Jude, is an independent Christian hip hop artist, songwriter and motivational speaker. Jude has released his highly anticipated first project Inner Light featuring the lead o f single On Me being streamed over 17,000 times on Soundcloud. Jude has become a fan favorite encapsulating styles similar to Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. Jude looks to inspire, upli t and motivate those around him to aspire greatness. Since its release another song of the Inner Light album called Know Me has reached #1 on Trend City Radio charts. Also has inducted into the Trend city radio hall of fame.

MINISTRY Right around the 5th grade is when I can remember having a love for poetry and the arrangement of words. I loved how the expression of music could change and alter your mood, situation and what you thought of yourself. I used to sit up many nights filling journals with rhymes and verses that were to inspire, upli t, and motivate those around me even myself. A ter all, life and death are in the power of the tongue and I always sought to write about change for the betterment of my family, community and the world. IDENTITY To anyone struggling with their identity in Christ, I strongly urge you to hold steadfast to that which he has said about you. You are the head and not the tail, above and not beneath. Remember you are made in his image; you are worthy and worth it. People will always have a way of projecting their fears and hurts onto you (hurt people hurt people). Engage in the daily renewing of your mind by casting down negative thoughts, imaginations and anything else sent to be a hindrance and discouragement to you on your walk. I have faith and believe that by doing this you will see a shi t in how GOD operates and his favor on your life. GROWTH My fan base has increased significantly since the release of Inner Light. I’m grateful for every single individual that supported the album, I’m grateful for all the constructive criticism that came with it also. I understand the position I’m in and take it not for granted, I have a responsibly to the people as we all do (every artist in ministry) to spread the Good News. I just pray that my actions are a representation of how Awesome GOD has been to me, that others may see it and want the same for themselves. I’m very humbled by this journey and experience as it is truly a blessing. INTEGRITY Integrity to me stands for doing what is right despite the persecution that will ensue, standing on your beliefs no matter the costs. Proverbs 11:3 tells us that the integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. THANKS I want to thank His Favor Teen Magazine as well as your readers for having me. It is truly an honor and privilege to be awarded such an amazing opportunity to share my faith and testimony on a larger platform.

Country/Pop artist Savannah Rae. The San Antonio native has been seen on stage with Demi Lovato during The Voice and American Music Awards. Her progressive sound in the country genre is opening doors for the 20 year old singer to share her message crossing into the popular culture arena. Foundation and national tour kicking off at the top of 2020 and national tour kicking off at the top of 2020..

Hello His Favor TEEN Magazine! I’m just coming off of tour, and have some exciting things lined up for the fall. I’m super excited, humbled and very grateful for all of the new opportunities that have come my way! From the American Musis Awards with Demi Lovato, to signing with Sony, it’s been an absolute whirlwind. At the young age of 12, I realized that music was my passion. I started recording and performing shortly afterwards, and the rest, as they say, was history. Coming up, I have a multitude of performances across the US. I’m also an ambassador for the S.O.S. Foundation that advocates for at-risk youth. I hope to be traveling and speaking across the country and overseas about the S.O.S. campaign. In addition, I’m currently recording and finishing my brand new EP/album. My single "Look Ahead" is a very motivational and “feel-good” song. My hope is that as listeners you walk away with a renewed sense of purpose, and realize that you can do anything you really set your mind to. However, do not get me wrong. Like many of you, I also struggle with a purpose and I have many insecurities. It’s easy to be your own worst critic. However, everyone is good at something. It can sometimes take a while to manifest, but everyone is on their own path and time frame. Try and fail, but never fail to try. If you have not already, follow my journey on all social media platforms @thesavannahrae 15

Jessica

Jessica Crawford never dreamed of being a full time musician. After some hard knocks in life, she struggle to accept the call she was feeling toward music ministry for fear of an uncertain future. In 2011 she left the comfort of her small, Virginia hometown for...yep, you guessed it...Nashville, TN. What she thought would be a short term adventure turned into a five year journey of songwriting and ministry development. From serving an inner-city missions base to living on faith for finances, Jessica gained life experiences that formed a deep dependence on God and opened her up to an adventure in music that she now welcomes with open arms. Jessica spent the past two years as Worship Arts Director at Fountain of Life in Burlington, New Jersey but recently felt called home to work on songwriting while helping care for her elderly grandparents. After two previous solo projects, Jessica released "Honestly" in September of 2018. The five song EP was written and recorded with the group Brothers McClurg at Old Bear Studio, ranking in the top 5 for the Christian genre and top 50 on all of iTunes in its first week.

Thank you for taking the time to speak to our readers.

First of all, how are you? I am well! Thankful to be alive and doing what I'm doing.

Tell us, when did you realize you were called to take your singing gift to the next level? (outside of just singing in church) It was actually at my lowest point in life. A relationship that I thought would be a forever thing had crumbled and it felt like my life had also. I started praying "what are you going to do with me now, Lord?" feeling so useless and that's when he said, "now we can get started." I consistently felt led toward songwriting, singing and recording music. I even got a phone call from a recording engineer out of the blue offering me flexible payments, which was the final confirmation I needed to tell me I was headed in the right direction. That doesn't happen every day!

"If you could see the way Jesus looks at you! If you could feel how much he values you! Ask the Holy Spirit to show you"

As far as media, have you seen a shift in the way Christians are representing Christ to the world? I'm not sure if I would call it a shift but it seems to me there is a broad spectrum in terms of the way Jesus is being represented by his followers - it ranges from harsh judgment to radical grace. Both extremes are hard for me because I believe we are called to represent BOTH truth and love. In your own words, what is WORSHIP? To me, worship is simply loving on God because he is worthy and first loved us. That doesn't have to be in song (although it can be). Words and actions are acts of worship as well especially if our actions are ones of obedience because he said: "if you love me you will obey my commands". (John 14:15)

Why is it important to have your own style as an artist? I believe God created each individual to represent different facets of himself - that's why diversity is so beautiful! If we don't stay true to who God designed us to be, the world won't get blessed by our uniqueness. So, as an artist, I just try to be me and let the Lord shine through it. As they say, "be yourself because everyone else is taken". www.jessicacrawfordmusic.com

Hello His Favor TEEN Magazine! I am feeling very blessed to have this opportunity and I thank you! As Anti-Bullying representative, I advocate for mental health and mental health awareness. I have made it known throughout social media that anyone that is dealing with something can always message me! My line is open and I want to be of service to all that need it. Part of being a representative for the #BanofBullying is to be a voice for the voiceless, integrate change and to provide hope and love to all that I can.

I believe that my focus throughout high school to soar higher than the peer pressure around me was to realize the bigger picture of things. High school is solely a special moment in time and it only lasts for so long, being a kid only lasts for so long so I wanted to make the most of my experience and be an active student-athlete volunteer. Peer pressure will always be there, beyond high school and into college and life. That’s why having my Anti-Bullying Campaign is such a relevant message in today’s society because no one no matter their age should be bullied into silence or the pressures of the world and the actions of those around them. In high school you are still learning about you, no one is perfect but love the imperfect person that you are during that moment in time and beyond. You will thank yourself later for that. I am still learning each day how to balance things, and time management truly is key and a skill that I am continuously working to master. I have had such a great example through having goal-driven parents, and being raised by the ultimate businessman my dad! They have encouraged me through the pursuit of my anti-bullying campaign and to never settle for mediocre. No matter if there is a doubt in the world that an anti-bullying campaign like mine isn’t relevant, I have people around me that support, love me and remind me that the fight to equality and so much bigger than ourselves. This campaign is so important #

From Pageants To Servant Leadership

and necessary in the world. I have always been taught to prioritize people and things that are important in my life and as a teenager, I’ve been able to find somewhat of a balance amongst family life, school, extracurriculars, time with friends, volunteer opportunities, pageantry, and my campaign and other activists and opportunities as well. It’s also important to have time for you and to always reflect on what is important. My church has been an influence on all aspects of my life, I also enjoy watching a lot of podcasts and online sermons as well that young pastors tackle the topic of dating/courtship and the discussions have been so very influential. My identity is found solely in Christ, without him I am nothing. As a teenager and young adult and even beyond that, the world can constantly feel like it is telling you every reason not to love you. When trends are glorified over God, and everything but Christ is cool it can be hard to form your own sense of identity and purpose. I believe that it is an important reminder for all of us to remember that the number of likes on social media, compliments, drugs and alcohol consumption, etc will never make a person feel whole. Only God can, find him, seek him and know him. Love God, love yourself, love others. I will be continuing my undergraduate education, continuously to be involved in student activities, gearing up for National Bullying Awareness Month in October of 2019, competing in future pageants, and continue to strive to make a positive change. When hearing the word FAVOR, I think of thanking God for having favor on my life and I pray that he continues to shine through me. I believe that favor is God instilling a special gift, purpose, and way inside of you so that He can shine through you. I pray that every day, God shines through me!

Teen Actor, Philanthropist, Entrepreneur *Thank you for taking the time to speak to our readers. First of all, how are you? Thank you for the opportunity to share my testimony with your readers! I am doing excellent. I just graduated high school plan to attend (name of college) in the fall. Very excited to begin this next chapter in my film and production career. *Tell us, when did you realize you were called to minister to young people? Well, at a young age, I had a learning disability and struggled to fit in, as many who shared my disability do. I didn’t allow the stigma to stop me from going for what I love and my family and friends were my biggest supporters. They were there for me is confirmation that the Lord is my shepherd and my provider. I learned to lean on Jesus for the strength to pull me through at a young age. As I witnessed others, kids, my peers, struggle with peer pressure, mental health, life as it happens, I decided to share my victories by mentoring, and really be an “Ambassador” for Christ and his Kingdom. *Can you share with us about your ministry and what ACA stands for? My ministry leans on the Word of God and specifically on the scripture, Proverbs 3: 5-6. “[5] Trust in the LORD with all thine heart, and lean not to thine own understanding [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and in he shall direct thy path” That’s when we said, “Each one, Reach one, Teach one”. It demonstrates how we can apply intention and focus on loving, listening and helping others. Ambassador Children of Absolutes (ACA), is a nonprofit Christian-based organization that was created based on my ministry working for God to help the youth in my community. We have created an event that celebrates youth in the community and encourages them to be excited about going back to school. Every year in August, ACA puts on a backpack giveaway supplying school supplies and backpacks to serve the greater Los Angeles area and this is our 7th year strong. We also provide families with free food and day of fun including a red carpet and Celebrity panel discussions to set an exciting tone for the upcoming school year. *What would you say to a young man that is struggling with his identity in Christ? I’d tell him to pray. Believe that there is power in prayer. Talk to God and tell him about your struggle, knowing that he will reveal himself to you. Have faith and hope knowing that it’s OK to love the Lord. I am living proof of “WONT HE DO IT!”. *In your own words, what is INTEGRITY? Integrity to me is being honest. Being someone that can be trusted and depended on. A person with good character and morals. That’s who I am and how I run my nonprofit with honest always. *Why is it important to be accountable for oneself? Being accountable means that your word is good, so to speak. That you are dependable and people can trust you’ll get the job done properly. It holds the individual responsible for the goals, purpose, and plans set for one’s self. As an owner of Ambassador Children of Absolutes, I am accountable to live, walk, and teach the works of Christ to humanity.

I Am Still Waiting... In today’s microwave culture, waiting feels like you are willfully being tortured. Who wants to be tortured? The answer is.... no one. I know that torture sounds a bit extreme, but that’s what it can sometimes feel like when you are waiting and hoping for something that you have been praying for, and have been promised. Sometimes in life, we lose hope and become frustrated because we feel that our prayers are not being answered. It can feel like God doesn't see or consider our faithfulness in our lifestyles, and He is simply taking too long. In 1 Samuel 16, David was a young teenager that tended the sheep for his family and worked in the field. He was always singing and talking (praying) to God. Then one day, a man named Samuel was instructed by God to go to the house of a man named Jesse. He was to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as king. Jesse had eight sons. A ter a long process, Samuel finally met the youngest, David. At about fi teen years old David was anointed as king over Israel. Even though David was anointed and promised to be king, for years he had to wait, work, and pray. Can you imagine being told that you are a King/Queen but not seeing anything that looks like it? David had to wait until he was thirty years old to become who God ordained him to be. In times where we lose hope, we stop praying and seeking God for the miraculous in our waiting season. We start to question everything, and wonder why things are the way that they are. When you have to wait, it is not because God is trying to torture you. He is conditioning you to become stronger in your faith, character and endurance. He is also moving situations and people that are currently occupying the space that is promised to you. A close friend of mine once said to me, “God knows what’s happening behind the scenes.” God is protecting you during the wait. Keep praying and doing the things that God has called you to do. As you walk, God works. Keep walking in becoming a be er person, student, athlete, and young entrepreneur. In due season you will see how God is working everything out so that you can take your rightful thrown in this world. Continue to pray and believe that God is working all things together for your good as you continue to wait on Him to blow your mind. Be encouraged that waiting is not torture, but it’s conditioning you to reign and rule.

Welcome to the Think Tank with Coach Dre Who Are You? - Your Discovery Journey to the Right College If you are considering college to address your passion, this article is for you. During the next several editions of His Favor-Teen, I will focus on the different stages of the college application process. The phases in the college application process are Discovery, Planning, Applying, and Selection. While these are high-level stages, there are many activities which occur in each phase, and in the next several Think Tank columns, I will dive into each phase and share some insights which I hope and pray will help for you and your family find the right collegiate home for you! So, let’s get started. The first phase in the college application process is “Discovery”. During the Discovery phase, you are evaluating you! When researching schools, we tend to focus on the school first without considering who you are as a person first. You need to like your experience. Thus, the list below are activities for you to engage in during your discovery journey.

● Assess your values: Think about how a school will align to your values. Think about it. As a student, you will spend approximately 7.5 months on a college campus, assuming you are living on campus. You need to consider a place that speaks to you as a person. If your values are centered around faith, social justice, community outreach, or other areas, your research should include those elements. ● Understand Your Personality: How does being one of 40,000 students sound to you? It is exciting or horrifying? Your response will aid your research in the type of school to research. Understanding the demographics can help you narrow your search and we will discuss demographics more during the Planning phase. To help your understanding of “you”, there are assessments, such as 16 Personalities, which you could take to aid your discovery journey. ● Take career assessments: Ask your career counselor if your school has access to career assessments. Assessment such as Focus2

are designed to help people to discover career options based on your responses. NOW, it is important to understand that career assessments are designed to expose you to career options which you may not have considered. You may think you want to be an accountant, and a ter taking a career assessment, you are exposed to be an educator. If the accountant is still a result, great, if it is not, consider your values more. KEEP AN OPEN MIND! ● Evaluate academic Interests: What are you interested as a major? Now, a major is broad categorization. You have your passion, aka the career that drives you to succeed, and you have a vehicle to get you there...college. Your college path to your passion could vary, so ask questions about your field of interest and college majors that could support your interests. Based on these activities, start researching schools that meet criteria that will allow you to be the BEST YOU! Friends, I would love to hear from you. J.E. Tyler is an author and poet who creates compelling and entertaining stories to reflect on the relevant, cross-cultural themes of an increasingly diverse society. Since the age of ten, Tyler has wri en many short stories, poems, and even a play, which was performed by the youth group of his home church, Destiny Vision Christian Center. It, however, wasn’t until the age of 27 that Tyler wrote and published his first novel, a gripping fantasy page-turner entitled R.E.G. A termath. Since then Tyler has published 3 novels including the fan-favorite Rumor series, a southern crime drama with an array of both compelling and relatable characters. He has also published a comedic, romantic short story, and, most recently, a children’s book entitled, Li le Angels. Through his media production imprint, ScribBoy Scribe Media, Tyler plans to expand upon his catalog of printed media by telling stories through the means of film and stage as well. HFM: Thank you for taking the time to speak to our readers. First of all, how are you? I am truly blessed. Life has been really great to me. I’m in the process of concluding my 6th project, which I plan to release the last quarter of this year. I’m healthy and genuinely happy with the direction that my life is taking. Like anyone else I’ve had rough days, so I can truly appreciate the presence of God’s favor on my life. HFM: Tell us, when did you realize you were called to reach your peers and those younger than you? I realized my life’s calling around the time that I was ten years old. As a small child, I remember feeling like the talent-less member of my family. All my brothers played sports and were talented in other ways. At that time, I honestly couldn’t think of one talent that made me stand out. It wasn’t until my fifth-grade teacher, Ms. Dorothy Bell, tasked my class with writing one short story a month that I discovered the wonderful gift God had bestowed on my life. Like all the other kids in the class, I did not want to write any stories; but I hated bad grades, so I forced myself to get it done. I was chosen to read my story to the entire class. I remember being so nervous. When I finished reading all the other kids applauded. They went on and on about how much they enjoyed my short story throughout the rest of the day. I was so excited that I ran home to tell my mom about it. She read the story and enjoyed it as well. She then took it to work with her and showed it off to all her coworkers. None of them could believe that I was only 10 years old. After all their feedback, I fell deeply in love with creating literature. Over 20 years later, and that love feels just as freshly exhilarating as it did all those years ago. HFM: Is writing something you have always wanted to do? I have not always wanted to write. When my fifth-grade teacher, Ms. Bell, first gave us the assignment to write a short story, I complained just as much as the other kids, but I’d always crafted stories in my head. In my earliest memories, I remember walking around my Grandmother Margaret’s tree and creating episodes of my favorite Saturday morning cartoon, Thundercats. I’ve always had the gift of imagining stories, but it wasn’t until that fateful day that I learned of my gift to translate my imagination into words. HFM: What would you say to a young man that is struggling with finding his place in today's society? This is a very good question. I would say to first, be true to yourself. We’re all so obsessed with what the world sees in us, especially living in the age of social media. Although it is important to put your best face forward, I feel that it is more important, to present your best face inward. Self-love is the greatest love. Once you truly take out the time to know, appreciate, and understand yourself, you’ll find that the power within you is greater than any barriers society will try to exert against your shine. HFM: In your own words, what is INTEGRITY? For me, integrity is an internal adherence to your own morals and sense of respect for others. Your integrity is governed by your perspective on what is right and wrong for you, those around you, and the world at large. A person who values integrity does not require any external gain, such as money, awards or general praise to do what is right. HFM: Is it important to set different goals each year? Why? If you have someplace that you want to be, you move as frequently as possible to get there. Those same rules apply to your life and goals. If you’re looking for a slow journey then step less frequently, but if you’re ambitious and looking to make strides, then set goals as frequently as possible. I set yearly goals. Depending on what I’m seeking to accomplish, I’ve set daily and monthly goals as well. We all must move in accordance with our purpose and within our level of ambition. Everyone’s journey is different, so everyone is aware when they’re doing enough and when they’re doing way too much. I say set those parameters for yourself and always seek to follow through.

Life, what does that word mean? There are many variations of the definition of the word, but ultimately it means: a form of existence that allows for constant growth and change. Different from inanimate forms of existence. The thing about life is that it can end in an instant without notice. The opposite of life being death. There is also eternal life, our life after the one we have on this earth. The question is are we taking those necessary steps towards progression in our faith to reach the ultimate goals as believers, doing what we are called to do on this earth with our time that is allotted, bringing others to the faith, and growing our relationship with God so that we can reach eternal life. One of those next steps for me was getting baptised. Growing up I had seen people be baptised, but I never really understood why or what it symbolised. So it was never something that I really had a desire to do. Many people do this when they are young, but like me, probably didn’t understand the full meaning. In recent years I have become more interested in the symbolism of being a “born again christian, holding on to those bits and pieces of information I heard about it in sermons. It was not until a few weeks ago when I decided to make that decision for myself. A defining decision I might add. I can remember sitting in church and being filled with an emotion I can't even describe, trying to keep the tears from rolling down in that moment I decided. After I was baptised there was a feeling of calmness that came over me and from that instant I knew my life was continually changing for the better. I decided to share my experience with the next step that I needed to take with growing my relationship with God because it might encourage the next person to do the same with whatever their next step may be. Always remember there is opportunity in obedience.

Devo Time Lately in my life, devotion time has been something I struggle with doing. I know many teens out there relate to this and even adults! It’s a challenge to find time. Our days are always booked it seems like or maybe we just simply don’t want to sit down and read a book. I’ve started a new way of getting in my devo time. I hope that this will encourage you to do the same!! I started by picking out a book of the Bible. I choose Acts. Each day, during my set time of only 30mins( it’s a lot easier to find than you think!) and I read a chapter a day. My first thing I do is I pray to God to help me listen to what he wants me to get out of this piece of scripture. I then read the passage and highlight anything I find important. My next step is that I take a notebook and at the top, I write the book, chapter, and date. The whole page is then filled with all the important things I found in the passage. I have colorful pens to help make all the info interesting. Taking this all and putting it into a work of art really helps me and makes me look forward to the time. I get a lot out of it and connect with God. Some pages are more decorative than others, but that’s okay! I challenge you to find your 30 mins and try this out for yourself! Not only do you get to doodle all your thoughts on the reading, but you’re slowly learning the word of God and reading through the Bible.

Richard Piette Jr. Above, Beyond & Balance How do you and your wife balance home and ministry work? Do you find it hard at times?

I will say it like this. I don’t believe its hard but to make it work you have to be intentional and creative. You have to make time for what matters and learn to not feel bad for saying no, or being focused on what God has placed in your hands. Never apologize for your purpose! I believe that people make time for what is important. And for me my family and our ministry is important. But I will not lose my family trying to save the world! So we plan, live by a calendar and had to learn to say no. Just because something good comes up doesn’t always mean its good for us. We have 2 young sons Jayden (9) and Judah (2), a thriving church, Christ the King Ministries located in Boston, Massachusetts, Above & Beyond, and I get the awesome privilege to travel often to Preach for some amazing ministries. We are very busy but we keep God first, communicate, laugh and have the amazing privilege of doing it all together! Honestly yes at times it gets hard. We are human and at times we become overwhelmed or tired. But in those seasons we have learned to trust God. If we are faithful and do our part, then He will remain faithful to cover what we cant. We also have an amazing group of spiritual sons and daughters, and leaders that support, sacrifice and help to make it all happen! God has been faithful!

What would you say to another young person that is struggling with their identity?

It's important to know that if the enemy is attacking your identity then he is attacking your purpose. You will never fulfill or identify your purpose if you don’t know who you are! You don’t have to go far to discover the truth of your identity. Get into the word of God, and trust that He who created you, knows your identity. Believe that who God says you are is the truth and you can rest in that truth. And find a church and Pastor that you trust and can be honest with. You need a pastor that can know your truth, and still believe in your promise. Someone who is anointed to know when you need a hug and when you need a push! And finally when you discover who you are, don’t allow anyone to change your mind! Never allow someone to give you an identity who is unsure of their own.

I believe that when God gives you a vision He only tells you enough to get you to say Yes. I never thought that Above & Beyond would become all it is today. God has truly blessed the work of our hands. The Above & Beyond Conference began in 2008 as a one night outreach for youth and young adults. I was a Youth Leader and had a desire to reach the youth of my city. That night I watched as youth and young adults got saved, delivered, and filled with the Holy Spirit in the auditorium of a local High School. That night I began to dream about reaching youth and young adults and empowering them to go after everything God said that could have. I wanted to see inner city urban youth experience the power of God at a whole new level not only at church but in their everyday lives. What impact has the conference had and will have on youth and young adults?

WOW! There are so many testimonies that we can share. One of the focuses of our ministry is to provide high quality ministry to urban inner city areas. Giving our youth an opportunity to experience God is different way. Its always inspiring to see their reaction and how God inspires and blesses them through the production and atmosphere or through the speakers or musical guests that we partner with. For the glory of God our ministry has given College Scholarships to 5 first time college students to help further their education. We have blessed to build an atmosphere where people of different languages, colors, ages, and doctrines can untie and feel inspired and lean to think out of the box, its always exciting to receive testimonies on youth ministries have been revamped, refreshed, or began because of the influence of Above & Beyond. Countless salvations, rededications, and even supernatural healings have taken place during our conference sessions.

One of my favorite testimonies actually happened during our first Above & Beyond. When you do ministry at this level there are many responsibilities people are unaware of. And because of the location we hosted the event and the amount of people expected we were required to hire police to be present. During the worship session one of the Police officers pulled me aside and stated that he was going to leave. When I asked why? (Remember we had paid them to be there in order to use the facility.) The police officer stated that there was a young mas who was at the stage crying and asking for prayer. The officer was suppose to arrest the young boy on sight. The officer stated that he didn’t know why, but he believed the boy was better with us than in jail. So he left so that he didn’t have to arrest the young man. That night the young an had no idea what happened behind the scenes, but he did receive Jesus as savior and his life was forever changed. These are the type of experiences you can expect during our meetings.
