TOUR HIGHLIGHTS - THE ALPS Salzburg Salzburg is storybook Austria. Standing beside the fast-flowing Salzach River, your gaze is raised inch by inch to the Altstadt’s mosaic of graceful domes and spires, the formidable cliff-top fortress and the mountains beyond. It’s a view that never palls. It’s a backdrop that did the lordly prince-archbishops and home-grown genius Mozart proud. The Dolomites The Dolomites are like no other mountains in Europe. They consist of thick layers of the mineral ‘Dolomite’, akin to limestone, originally deposited on the floor of an ancient sea. The Dolomite peaks are gigantic, chiselled monuments to the powerful forces of glacial erosion. Continuous sheer cliffs flank most of the peaks. They are amongst the most striking of all European mountains, coloured in weathered hues of rose, yellow, white and grey and rising in steep spires of fantastic form. Silvretta Bielerhöhe - High-Alpine Road The Silvretta High-Alpine Road is considered to be one of the most beautiful and popular panoramic roads in the Alps. It is 22.3 km long and runs from Partenen in the Montafon (1,051 m) through a total of 34 bends to the 2,032 m-high Bielerhöhe (toll road) as far as Galtür (1,584 m) in the Paznauntal. Passo Stelvio The original road was built in 1820-25 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardia with the rest of Austria, covering a climb of 1871 m. The engineer and project manager was Carlo Donegani (1775–1845). Since then, the route has changed very little. Its sixty hairpin turns, 48 of them on the northern side numbered with stones, are a challenge to motorists. BMW World The permanent exhibition covers a surface area of some 4,000 m² and houses more than 120 of the most valuable and attractive automobiles, motorcycles and engines from nine decades of BMW history.

Here we find the highest mountains of Portugals, where we will spend an extra day before we travel further towards the most westerly point in Europe, the Cabo de Roca. In Lisbon we take another restday to explore this fascinating metropole. Our tour will go on along the Atlantic to Sagres before returning via Aracena and Seville to the starting point of our tour. TOUR HIGHLIGHTS - PYRENEES SERRA DA ESTRELA The Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela surrounds the westernmost part of the Iberian dividing range, which is home to the highest mountains of the Portuguese mainland. The Serra is characterized by natural forests and lakes, bizarre rock formations, wild ravines, streams, great views and above all, the wonderfully fresh mountain air! LISBON As Portugal‘s largest city, with the country‘s main port, the seat of government, the supreme state government agencies, six universities and the Academy of Sciences, Lisbon is the political, economic and cultural center of the country. Due to its location on the Tagus, for a long time the only way south from Lisbon was via ferry. The Ponte 25 de Abril (1013m span and 2287m in length) was completed in 1966 and for the first time connected Lisbon with Almada on the south of the Tagus. BRIDGE OF ALCÁNTARA The bridge of Alcántara is a Roman stone arch bridge in Spain, in the eponymous town of Extremadura about 5 km before the Portuguese border spans the River Tagus. It is regarded as the most significant surviving Roman bridge in the world. Legend has it that a golden sword is walled up in the foundations of the bridge; a further legend says that this is the sword of Roderick, the last Visigoth King of Toledo.

SEVILLE Seville, whose foundation dates back to the ancient legend of Herakles the Greek hero, was already an important commercial centre before the arrival of the Romans and was called „Hispalis“ in antiquity. The city flag of Seville, as well as the coat of arms, bears the text NO 8 DO. The „8“ is represents a skein of wool or „madeja“ in Spanish. The motto, therefore, reads „NO madeja DO,“ a play on the sentence, „No me ha dejado“ or „She [the city] has not abandoned me“. This play on words is accredited to Alfonso X, who penned the motto to thank the city for its support during his exile, in which he lived from his dethronement until his death.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS - THE IMPERIAL CITIES FES The city „Medinat Fas“ was founded in 798 by Moulay Idris on a site that is today called the Andalusian quater. In the course of its history, Fes has been the capital of the country for several dynasties and is therefore considered one of the four royal cities of Morocco. This example of an ancient oriental city has been a World Heritage Site since 1981, under the protection of UNESCO. Its deep blue pottery is considered the symbol of Fes. MARRAKECH Marrakech is a word from the Berber language and possibly means „The land of God.“ The name „Morocco“ for the entire country was derived from the city name Marrakech. Because of the large number of architecturally significant buildings, such as the Koutoubia Mosque from the year 1162, the Kasbah of the 12th c. and the Ben-Jusuf Medersa from the 14th c., the old town became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1985. The main attraction of the city is the Djemaa el Fna square, the world-famous medieval market and execution site. Today it is a lively place with food stalls, oriental storytellers, snake charmers and jugglers. RABAT Rabat is the capital and third largest city of the Kingdom of Morocco. Relaxed, well-kept and very European, flag-waving Rabat is just as cosmopolitan as Casablanca down the coast, but lacks the frantic pace and grimy feel of its economic big brother. Its elegant tree-lined boulevards and imposing administrative buildings exude an unhurried, diplomatic and hassle-free charm that many travellers grow to like. THE HIGH ATLAS The High Atlas rises from the west by the Atlantic Coast and runs eastwards until the Moroccan-Algerian border. On the Atlantic end the Sous valley falls steeply to the southwest and forms a striking contrast to the northern coast and the Anti-Atlas. It is also a major barrier to the weather, sheilding northern Morocco from the hot Saharan summers to the south. The highest peak, the Mount Toubkal, rises to about 4100m.

Erg Chebbi According to legend Erg Chebbi, one of the largest sand dune areas in Morocco, was created as a punishment from the Gods to the locals for not offering assistance to a travel weary caravan. The 22 km long and 5 km wide dune belt lies about 40 km south of Erfoud and is the southernmost point on our tour. The starry night sky in the desert will be a life long memory for you.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS - ANDALUSIA ESPECIAL GRANADA Granada is famous for its many important historical buildings, both from Moorish times as well as from Gothic and Renaissance history. The city also has a world-wide reputation for its guitar makers. The most important buildings in Granada are from the Moorish period and belong to the Alhambra (from Al-hamra-u: „The red one“) fortress complex. It is the largest collection of this style of palaces in Spain and was erected in the 13th and 14 Century as the residence of the Moorish kings. The Alhambra is most famous for its stucco ceilings and the Lion Fountain. The Alhambra and Albaicin, the former Moorish residential area, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. SIERRA CAZORLA At 214,300 ha, the „Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas“ natural park in the northeast of the province of Jaén, is the largest reserve in Andalusia. It is most famous for its enormous forests - these trees are the ones which supplied the wood for the Spanish Armada. The Río Guadalquivir has its source in this part of the Baetic Cordillera mountains. It runs through a broad valley and collects in the Tranco reservior. On the other hand its tributaries, such as the Río Borosa for example, have often cut deep ravines into the mountains, which increase the scenic beauty of these Sierras enormously.

CABO DE GATA Cabo De Gata is located in the province of Almería in southeastern Spain. Approx. 33,663ha of the peninsula is a protected natural park. The vegetation here is unique because the climate is dry and very warm by European standards (2,900 hours of sun per year), and the area has the status of a Biosphere Reserve. The Cabo de Gata has a rocky coastline and is bordered by mountains in the hinterland. The-geological origin lies in strong volcanic activity in the region. The highest point of the area is the Pico de los Frailes at 493 m, itself an extinct volcano. Along the beaches between San Jose and the two eponymous capes you can clearly see where lava has flowed into the sea.

On this tour you ride along an old trade route that dates back to the times of ancient roman emperors. Today it makes up an important trail of great cultural heritage known as la Ruta de la Plata, the Silver Trail. Discover the roads into the heart of Spain, full of historic cities, hospitable people and delicious cuisine. Once a link between the Atlantic coast and the lands of southern Spain, for many centuries The Silver Trail was a main communications route from North to South. Originally it served the spread of Roman culture, later, during the Middle Ages, it was used by Arabs and Christians alike. Fascinating cities and palaces built by the Goths, the Romans and not least the Arabs are witnesses to the remarkable past of this primeval region of Spain.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS - THE SILVER TRAIL YUSTE MONASTERY Yuste Monastery is hidden by the southern flank of the Sierra de Gredos. TOURRATES 2014 ZAFRA Like many other villages in Extremadura, Zafra also contributed its share to the „conquest“ of the American continent. We know the names of 221 people that were involved with Lope de Aguirre in his Amazon campaign, that can trace their roots , via Zafra, to their Roman origins. CACERES The Ibero-Celtic settlement was founded in about 54 BC by the Romans under the name of Norba Caesarina. In 1165 the city was made an independent principality by Geraldo the Fearless, a Portuguese adventurer.. Alfonso IX. finally prevailed in 1229, and took the city for the Kingdom of León. Besides Istanbul, the Aljibe in Caceres is the largest rock-carved cistern in the world. In 1986 Caceres received the status of a UNESCO World Heritage site. ALCOCER (EL CID) Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, el Cid, was a Castilian knight from the time of the Reconquista and a Spanish national hero. Just as the fabled Atlantis was never found, this place was discovered in the 80‘s to be was one of the sites of the „Cidliedes“ the tradition of passing on stories by song. MONFRAGÜE NATURE PARK Monfragüe was made the 14th National Park of Spain in 2007, and the first in the region of Extremadura. The park is particularly well known because of the many large birds of prey which nest there. The park houses the largest colony of monk vultures in Europe. In this park you can observe the Spanish imperial eagle, black stork, griffon vulture, eagle owl, golden eagle and Bonelli‘s eagle.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS - ANDALUSIA CLASSIC WHITE VILLAGES OF LAS ALPUJARRAS The quintessential pueblos blancos for which Andalucía is famous. One of the most picturesque corners of Andalucía, Las Alpujarras is a 70kmlong jumble of valleys along the south flank of the Sierra Nevada. Arid hillsides split by deep ravines alternate with oasis-like white villages surrounded by vegetable gardens, orchards, rapid streams and woodlands. The “badlands” of Spain proved an ideal bodydouble for America’s Wild West in such movies as For A Few Dollars More, which starred a young Mr Eastwood.
