EDITOR’S COMMENT

The Holidays are upon us

HispanicMeetingsTravel.com PUBLISHER GVR Public Relations Agency, Inc. www.gvragency.com EDITORIAL

T

his is a very busy time of year and sometimes we forget to enjoy them. It’s really hard to slow down and you wonder if you can afford to do it. Overtime you learn that slowing down is good for the heart. When you sit down with your family and friends to visit and enjoy the season you realize what is really important in our every day life. Take time to enjoy it and savor this very special time of the year.. Give thanks for the little things and most importantly to all those who support you. In our culture damos un abrazo! In the last issue we presented information on “The Wall” that will divide our country from our neighbors to the South. The controversy continues and Mexico’s president Felipe Calderon has asked our candidates for public office to quit using the immigrants for their political dialogue. Let’s hope they are listening and will focus instead on developing a comprehensive and humane immigration policy. Will they have the courage to make it a priority and follow the path of expediency? It’s so simple. Treat everyone, no matter his or her station in life, as you wish to be treated! In our industry we learn to appreciate every person who makes our travel and meetings industry seamless. To us every single person performs a service that makes everything we do possible. Add your voice to this issue and support the immigrant workers many of them work in our industry. In this issue we are pleased to partner with the International Association of Hispanic Meeting Professionals and present coverage for their 12th Annual International Conference held this year in Albuquerque, New Mexico with the support of Heritage Hotels & Resorts Corporation, Albuquerque’s Hispano Chamber of Commerce, Hilton Hotels Corporation, Starwood Hotels Corporation, Harrah’s Entertainment and Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority. Conference coverage begins on page 16 with an Introduction for the conference and welcome letters from New Mexico’s governor and presidential candidate Bill Richardson and Albuquerque’s mayor Martin Chavez. See the conference Agenda on page 24 and see the lineup of speakers on page 28, 29 and page 30. We wish IAHMP great success as they welcome their members from the Mexico chapter for the first time, as well as from the Iberian chapter in Portugal. This group is living up to their conference theme “Bridging Borders in the Meetings & Hospitality Industry.” On the cover we are proud to recognize Heritage Hotels & Resorts a Hispanic owned company who is this years major sponsor for the Hispanic Meeting Professionals annual conference. Read about Pam Bazant-Jung who is the president for this unique hotel company and Adrian Perez executive vice president and Ed Pulsifer, vice president of sales and marketing on page 17. When you stay at a Heritage Hotel you will recognize this is not a chain hotel. This is a company that takes pride in making sure it incorporates the culture of the region in each property they own. Owner Jim Long is recognized in the industry for his dedication in making his hotels a unique and memorable experience. A good example is the adobe chapel on the grounds of Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town. The chapel is used for weddings and the interior takes you back to a mission pueblo you can only find in the Southwest. Congratulations to Heritage Hotels & Resorts for maintaining the culture and heritage in each hotel they build.

Pinnacle Entertainment Implodes Sands Casino Hotel In Atlantic City, N.J.

P

innacle Entertainment cleared the way for its planned multibillion-dollar gaming resort at the heart of the famed Boardwalk with a spectacular implosion of the former Sands Casino Hotel. The nitroglycerin- fueled blast marked the first nighttime implosion in New Jersey and first-ever casino-hotel implosion on the East Coast. All that remained of the Sands is more than 100,000 tons of rubble from the casino and the 21-story hotel tower, which is being removed in 5,000 truckloads for recycling into road construction material. "The implosion is a milestone event in the history of Atlantic City and of Pinnacle Entertainment," said Daniel R. Lee, chairman and chief

In preparation for the implosion, Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) set 550 charges on the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 10th and 15th floors of the Sands. During the months prior to the implosion the demolition team lead by R.E. Pierson Construction Co., and also including CDI and Paulus, Sokolowski & Sartor (PS&S), undertook preparatory mechanical demolition, materials recycling and removal of debris. The Sands covered approximately 6.5 acres of Pinnacle Atlantic City's current 20-acre site. The Sands, which opened in 1980 as the Brighton Casino Hotel, was among the smallest of the city's casino hotels, and was acquired by Pinnacle in November 2006. www.hispanicmeetingstravel.com | HM&T 13

This type of sponsorship recognizes the value of these professionals to the meetings industry and presents them an excellent opportunity to network with their peers and the suppliers that support the organization. While in New Mexico, the meeting planners will also have the time to learn more about this company and it's headquarters in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We especially want to recognize Jim Long who is among a growing number of Hispanic hotel owners making their presence known with the extraordinary talent they being to this industry. We also thank Pam Bazant-Jung who is the president of this unique hotel company and Adrian Perez executive vice president and Ed Pulsifer, vice president of sales and marketing who have all supported us and share our vision for Bridging Borders in the Meetings & Hospitality Industry. The Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce under the leadership of Alex O. Romero, President & CEO has worked diligently to bring IAHMP to Albuquerque this year. Cathy Gonzales, vice president of tourism and her entire team have supported us for the past twelve months when planning began for this year's conference. In September they hosted board members from the USA and Mexico who met with the Mayor's office and traveled to the state capital of Santa Fe to meet with state officials and Mexico's consul to seek their support for the annual conference. The Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce is a very significant asset to anyone who brings a meeting or conference to the state of New Mexico. This year, Hilton Hotels Corporation is a major supporter of our conference. Their support and participation will greatly assist us in hosting a successful conference. Joining Hilton, as sponsors are Starwood Hotels and Resorts Corporation, Caesars' Entertainment and Las Vegas CVA. Banquet sponsors include Coca Cola, Houston CVB and the Hispanic Hotel Owners Association. In-kind sponsorship is provided by Southwest Airlines who contributed airline tickets for the organization to use to support the conference travel. Our host while in Santa Fe is the Santa Fe CVB under the direction of Keith Toler, Executive Director. This year's conference also begins a new tradition that maintains the annual conference in December of each year in the USA while introducing an international conference in the spring. Next year, the Mexico Chapter will host the first meeting in a major city in their country. So stay tuned and expect great things to happen in 2008. Enjoy the Conference!

MICKY CRUZ Micky has released four CD's in his past five years as a recording artist and his Latest CD "Cumbegue" has evolutionized the Latin music scene. Staying true to his Latin roots, Micky continues to develop Latin rhythms by mixing reggae, pop, swing, ska, and many more musical genres as he expands the dynamics of Latin music. "Cumbegue is my own creation," Cruz says. "But when I perform I don't just do one style of music. I try to cover most Latin styles, otherwise the audience would be bored to death,". "Cumbegue" is Mickys' fourth CD now and the best yet. It has already placed on the Atlantic Satellite Music charts. Billboard magazine has put together a Latin sampler compilation CD in response to the Latin explosion and has included Mickys' song "Morena". Micky was born in Nicaragua, Central America, but his ancestry is Filipino and Mayan Indian. He was orphaned at the age of two when his family was killed in the Nicaraguan war in the late 1970s and raised himself on the streets of Central America and Mexico at the age of seven. Micky is a self taught musician who writes and produces all of his own music. His musical career would begin as a survival tactic in the everyday conditions of a third world country. Micky says " I never thought that music would be my career. I just did it because people seemed to enjoy my voice and it was the quickest way to get money so that I could get something to eat." Singing on the streets of Central America and the busses of Mexico for spare change, he overcame the struggles of a homeless life. Finding short term gigs with traveling bands, Micky decided to develop his musical talents. He began to perform as a solo artist when he moved to the United States, and recorded his first CD at the age of fifteen. It didn't take long for Micky's story to reach the Univision newsroom. He was invited to do an interview and happened to meet Bo Diddley at the station that morning. Bo took a liking to Micky, and asked his producer, Scott, to take care of Micky. Scott took Micky to Bo's recording studio, and they came up with Micky's second CD "Dulces Recuerdos" eight months later. Scott Free, says "Micky is a unique artist who interprets a variety of music. This is especially useful when it comes to song writing. Some artists don't know the history of the music they perform, but Micky is a 'musicologist` who can call on the musical spirits of our forefathers to complete an original song." Micky's third CD "Siempre Con Amor" has proven to be popular in a more international market. Airplay in Australia, the US, Italy, and Canada boosted it's position on the Atlantic Satellite top 2,500 Music charts for six months in a row.

For the adventurous at heart, a touch tank will let you feel a real shark. The center is also home to the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, which covers more than two centuries of naval activity in and around the great Norfolk Harbor. An impressive collection of antique ship models and retrieved underwater artifacts make the museum a very popular part of Nauticus. USS Wisconsin, officially launched in 1943 and America's largest battleship, is berthed adjacent to the Hampton Roads Naval Museum. In honor of its 57th anniversary, the 887-foot ship, which was involved in World War II, the Korean War and the Gulf War, was tugged down the Elizabeth River to its new port at Nauticus on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 2000. Ocean View Beach: a spectacular seven-mile stretch of glittering sandy beaches. The bay's calm surface and gentle surf make it ideal for sunbathers, swimmers and families with children. The beach also offers a six-acre waterfront park and a roster of summer entertainment, from pig roasts, parties and big band concerts that take place in the park's bandbox, gazebo and promenade areas. The Waterside, overlooking the Elizabeth River, is Norfolk's waterfront festival marketplace with dozens of exciting shops, restaurants and entertainment. Town Point Park: a seven-acre waterfront park offers more than 65 major outdoor concerts, award-winning festivals and special events annually. Home to the Armed Forces Memorial, which commemorates soldiers lost at war, Town Point Park is a waterside favorite for picnics, parties and people watching. BPG’s Latest Development inSouth Wilmington Provides Economic Boost to Oneof Wilmington’s Last Undeveloped Areas

D

elaware U.S. Senator Thomas R. Carper, Lt. Governor John C. Carney, Wilmington Mayor James M. Baker, and Riverfront Development Corporation Executive Director Michael S. Purzycki were among scores of people who celebrated the start of construction on the Christina Crossing Retail Center in South Wilmington, the latest development project by the Buccini/Pollin Group. Delaware Supermarkets, Inc., represented at today's ceremony by Rich Kenny, will open a 70,000 square foot ShopRite supermarket in Fall 2008, becoming Christina Crossing's anchor tenant. Christina Crossing is situated on 10 acres just south of the Christina River between South Market and South Walnut Streets, on the site of a former salvage yard. In addition to the ShopRite supermarket space, another 50,000 square feet of retail space will be available when the project is completed. Mayor Baker said the introduction of a new retail center in South Wilmington will provide a much-needed boost to the City's overall economy and add new retail outlets for City residents who live in the adjacent City communities of Downtown Wilmington, Southbridge, Christina Landing, and Justison Landing as well as to the City as a whole. "The rebuilding of Wilmington continues at a steady pace and is evident in our neighborhoods, in the Downtown District, and along the Christina Riverfront," said the Mayor. "The wise investment of public dollars continues to attract an influx of private dollars that are helping to change Wilmington in dramatic and sustained ways." "This center, anchored by a high quality supermarket such as ShopRite, is as transformational as any other riverfront project in the last decade," said Michael S. Purzycki, Executive Director of the Riverfront Development Corporation. www.hispanicmeetingstravel.com | HM&T 37

In addition to the meetings already on the books, the sales staff of the PCVB books an additional 100,000 room nights, on average, through short-term meetings for the year. Jack Ferguson, executive vice president of the PCVB, said, "As we move into 2008, we are very optimistic for continued growth in the con-

vention market, especially as expansion of the Pennsylvania Convention Center is underway. The marketing team at the PCVB, working with the PCC, has a strong and creative strategic marketing plan to support the sales initiatives with continued focus on booking for both the long-term and short-term markets." The PCVB is also continuing the much-talked-about Philadelphia branding campaign, "Philadelphia, Where You're at Liberty to Meet," which launched in 2006 to rave reviews by customers across the country. To support the short-term sales effort, the PCVB and PCC also launched an integrated marketing and advertising campaign targeting regional customers called "Bring it Home." The campaign encourages local business leaders to keep their meetings in the region. In addition to the marketing campaigns, much of the continued convention success for Philadelphia is due in part to three specialized groups that help attract businesses in their industries - the Greater Philadelphia Life Sciences Congress, the Multicultural Affairs Congress, and the Philadelphia Sports Congress. For sports-enthusiasts, 2008 will be a special year thanks to three unique events that will be held in Philadelphia. In January, the U.S. Olympic Teams Trials - Table Tennis will bring the top 24 elite players to compete for spots on the U.S. Olympic Team; in June the US Olympic Team Trials - Gymnastics is expected to generate more than $10 million in economic impact for the region; and the patriotic Army/Navy Game returns to Philadelphia in 2008. For 2008, the largest conventions Philadelphia will host include: the American Library Association, January 8-16 (18,985 total room nights) ; Interphex USA, March 26-28 (7,520 total room nights); Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers, Inc., June 25-27 (15,365 total room nights); American Chemical Society, August 17-22 (22,750 total room nights); and American Society of Nephrology, November 5-9 (29,765 total hotel room nights) In face each of these organizations are a return convention or tradeshow to Philadelphia.

HISPANIC TRAVEL GUIDE

In Portland, the Pedestrian is King! I n Portland, Oregon the pedestrian is king and the light rail system is so popular and easy to use that it draws as many tourists as commuters on any given day of the week. Getting around Portland is always at the center of any conversation. In fact, Portland's MAX (Metropolitan Area Express) light rail system, new streetcar line, pedestrian-friendly downtown, half-size city blocks, and cycling-centric commuters are as much a part of the city's identity as its beautiful roses and many bridges. Portland has a small, personable downtown with half-size city blocks (200 feet vs. the standard 400-foot monsters) and plentiful public spaces making it an ideal city to explore on foot. While some might opt to discover the city on their own, Portland walking maps are available at Powell's Books and the visitor information center at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Walking tours leave Pioneer Courthouse Square daily, guided by resident experts who are ready with the fascinating fact or the history tidbit. Choose from "Best of Portland" and "Underground Portland" for 21/2-hour jaunts. On weekends, sample 30 items in 3-5 hours on the "Epicurean Excursion." www.portlandwalkingtours.com

Portland Named Best City for Cycling Named "Best Cycling City in North America" by Bicycling magazine in 2001, Portland offers one of the nation's most progressive bicycle transportation programs. Cyclists enjoy wide, clearly marked bike lanes on most major commuter routes; municipal bike racks; access to bridges; and bike safety programs. Adding to the bike-friendly atmosphere, TriMet buses are equipped with bike racks, while bikes are also welcome aboard all MAX light rail trains. Cycling events include the popular Portland Bridge Pedal (August), during which the city's bridges close to all but cyclists.

Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade For a year-round bridge experience, cyclists (and pedestrians) can enjoy the Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade. This 1.5-mile pedestrian/cycling corridor extends along the east side of downtown Portland's Willamette River, affording dramatic views of the city. The esplanade connects to the seawall at Gov. Tom McCall Waterfront Park via the Steel Bridge and the Hawthorne Bridge. The resulting loop is just under three-miles in length. A portion of the Eastbank Esplanade is a 1,200-foot floating walkway that sits atop the Willamette River. It is the longest floating walkway in the United States. Thirteen urban markers run the length of the esplanade, marking the eastside street grid and providing information about the river and the rich history of the area. Seating walls, benches, overlooks, and small plaza areas offer places to stop, relax, and enjoy. Boat docks and public artworks are also featured. The entire route meets ADA compliance.

Springwater Corridor Cyclists who opt to continue south on the Eastbank (rather than turning onto the Hawthorne Bridge) can follow a three-mile path between OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) and the Sellwood Bridge opened for recreation. This is the westernmost leg of the Springwater 40 HM&T | Hispanic Meetings & Travel

Corridor. A testament to Oregonians' zest for recycling, the Springwater Corridor is one of Portland's most notable bike developments. This former rail corridor was reborn as an alternative transportation and recreational trail that winds for 17 miles from Portland to Boring. The corridor is part of a 170-mile loop from city center to wilderness (Mount Hood National Forest).

Forest Park There are 30 miles of bikeable terrain in Forest Park, at 5,100 acres the largest forested urban park in the nation. One of the most popular routes for bikers is the 11.2-mile Leif Erikson Drive, with views of the Columbia River, Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens.

Portland A City With Strigent Zoning Laws Starting in the 1970s, stringent zoning laws kept Portland's urban and residential areas focused and well planned, avoiding the sprawl that has crept outward from many other cities its size. Back in 1993, Portland became the first American city to adopt a Global Warming Action Plan, which has kept emissions down and helped Portland General Electric become one of the greenest power companies in the U.S. This year at the suggestion of the city's Peak Oil Task Force, the City Council approved a measure to cut Portland's fossil fuel use in half by 2032. Already ripe with green building initiatives, the city's most ambitious vision for future development could easily be the award-winning Lloyd Crossing Sustainable Urban Design Plan, a proposed 50-year project to turn 35 blocks of northeast Portland into an ecologically sustainable mixed-use neighborhood.

Portland is a welcoming destination anytime of the year! Set against the backdrop of majestic Mount Hood, Portland is a sophisticated city with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. It's a city with small-town warmth that makes it a natural for tours of all types. Whether in groups or individually, visitors can cruise scenic rivers, stroll through gardens and parks, and shop tax-free in a tempting array of stores and boutiques. Should you need any better reason to add Portland to your travel plans the Portland Oregon Convention & Visitors Bureau's Travel Industry Sales Department is ready to help you. During summer months, you can also hit the city's farmers market, located in the Cultural District in the South Park Blocks. Here, you'll find organically and locally grown perishables, from goat cheese to loganberries to passion flowers. Portland ranks first in nation for biking to work: The U.S. Census Bureau finds that more people bike to work in Portland than any other city in the United States.
