HISTORIC MACON FOUNDATION REVITALIZING OUR COMMUNITY BY PRESERVING ARCHITECTURE AND SHARING HISTORY The Historic Macon Foundation (HMF) makes a visible impact on the Macon community by carrying out its mission of community revitalization by preserving architecture and sharing history. Historic Macon Foundation was created by the merger of the Middle Georgia Historical Society and the Macon Heritage Foundation in 2003. Historic Macon Foundation advocates for Macon’s historic and architectural heritage, facilitates preservation and revitalization efforts in the community, and maintains and promotes the Sidney Lanier Cottage. The ongoing work of HMF is evident by the 14 historic districts with over 6,000 homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over the course of 30 years, Historic Macon has rehabilitated over 150 properties in Macon’s historic districts and downtown, making the organization an integral player in

local revitalization efforts. Through innovative partnerships with local arts organizations, institutions of higher learning, and private contractors, HMF contributes to economic development in Macon. Historic Macon’s work focuses on the local community but its tax incentive programs and groundbreaking real estate investments make this organization one of the leading historic preservation agencies in the country and a model for the nation. In fact, for the second year in a row, Macon has led the state of Georgia in historic preservation tax credits, beating out Atlanta and Savannah. Since 2009, Historic Macon has restored 27 historic buildings and built 16 new homes. Historic Macon continues to expand its mission of community revitalization and historic preservation through

innovative projects. In 2014, Knight Foundation awarded Historic Macon a $3 million investment to complete the organization’s efforts in transforming Beall’s Hill. The Design House featured during Design, Wine & Dine was made possible through the Downtown Revolving Loan Fund. The Fund was created to establish a core of homeowners in downtown Macon and to entice private developers to produce owner-occupied housing for the longterm stability of downtown revitalization. Since 1890, 551 Cherry Street has been home to numerous businesses in Macon. Centrally located in Macon’s downtown core, the building once served as Lazarus Jewelry Palace, The Sweet Shop, Shoe Repairing, William Guttenberger Music, and the Community Investment Corporation over the course of the twentieth century. The building was once home to Sam Weichselbaum and Mack, a liquor establishment, in the early 1900s. The store advertised itself as selling “the oldest Whiskies in Macon” and Christian Moerlein National Export, “America’s Purest and Finest” beer. Today, the building serves as Historic Macon’s Design House as part of Design, Wine & Dine. During this event, attendees will experience the flavors of fine wines and spirits and craft beer in addition to attending design lectures and cooking demonstrations. Mr. Weichselbaum and

Mr. Mack would have been proud. However, 551 Cherry Street was not purchased by Historic Macon to solely serve as the Design House. Historic Macon purchased the loft project in January of 2013 as the first project to be completed using the Downtown Revolving Loan Fund. Historic Macon acquired the building with the hopes of establishing a core of homeowners in downtown Macon. The three lofts and one commercial space will be sold to owner-occupants. The preservation of the building is a testament to Historic Macon’s commitment to community revitalization. This project will serve as a model for private developers to produce owner-occupied housing for the longterm stability of downtown revitalization. The Downtown Revolving Loan Fund was made possible through the support of

The Peyton Anderson Foundation, The 1772 Foundation, The E.J. Grassmann Trust, and the Community Foundation of Central Georgia. Through their generous contributions, Historic Macon established a $500,000 revolving fund for downtown Macon. Numerous professionals made the transformation of 551 Cherry Street possible. Rusty Poss served as the general contractor for the 3,600-square-foot loft project. Carrie Cameron Robinson, Historic Macon’s preservation designer, worked as the project manager. After college and a brief stint as an art teacher, Joe Adams stopped painting to build a business career and raise a family. At the urging of his wife, Evelyn, he started painting again about 12 years ago.

Valorie Lewis landed her first decorating job while standing in line at a paint counter and boldly telling the store owner that he needed to hire her. That was over 25 years ago, and since then, countless people have realized that they, too, are in need of her talents. Valorie’s customers have found that she not only produces a polished, unique look but also makes what can be a stressful process fun and enjoyable.

A graduate of Mercer University with a double major in art and biology, Adams credits his professor and mentor Sam Hutto as his greatest artistic influence. Adams has exhibited work throughout the Southeast, including shows at Mercer University, The Summit One Gallery and CK Swan in Highlands NC, The Gallery at Macon Arts Alliance and Art On the Avenue in Macon, The Left Bank Gallery on St. Simons Island and The Parker Gallery on St. Simons. His paintings have been shown as part of the Historic Macon Showhouse and The Highlands Designer Showhouse. His recent work has focused on nonobjective painting, utilizing color and texture to create wonderful objects of beauty and design. He is concerned with the qualities of the paint and the manner in which it is applied. In his current series, Adams focused on the liquidity of the paint, using a pallet knife to spread the pigment across the canvases. Splatters of paint, layers of color, and a variety of textures are definitive qualities of a Joe Adams painting.

Valorie works at Warno-Cam Paint Store with Benji Lewis, her husband of 20 years. She and Benji have worked together for the entirety of their marriage to provide Macon with exceptional paint, wallpaper, blinds and fabric. She has also operated Breezy Hill Interiors, an interior design and consulting company since 1995, and specializes in residential and commercial design. She is a veteran showhouse participant.

JUDY HODGENS 2. LOWER LEVEL LIVING SPACE Interior designer Judy Hodgens has been designing classic interiors for over twenty years. Judy’s approach to design is collaborative and reflects her client’s personalities and lifestyles! The signature of Judy Hodgens Interiors includes an eclectic combination of classic furnishings and antiques with a strong connection to architectural elements. She uses color as a neutral, along with texture and pattern to bring a quiet sophistication to clients’ homes. Her style is tailored and timeless. The end result is a design that is inheritable and ages gracefully. Judy encourages her clients to seek or refine their own style –with humor, with passion and with love the combination accomplishes her mission. In her spare time Judy loves great jazz, cooking, gardening, and entertaining.

In recent years, Valorie has become very much involved with Rooms From The Heart, a non-profit organization that provides bedroom makeovers and home repairs for children who are seriously ill. As a board member and as a contributing designer, Valorie enjoys working closely with these amazing children and their families to provide cheerful, restful and therapeutic dream rooms. She finds this volunteer work to be immensely rewarding and inspiring. She enjoys gardening, tending her ducks, chickens, goats and horses, playing with her eight grandchildren and entertaining friends and family in her renovated farmhouse.

KATHERINE WALDEN 3. LOWER LEVEL BEDROOM This Design House is a complete departure for Historic Macon Foundation, one which reflects the organization’s continued interest in encouraging living in historic structures. The twist this year in repurposing a downtown building as a multi-use condominium/retail space is indicative of the move to urban living even in a town the size of Macon, where the trend has exploded. This will be the 15th year Walden has participated in a showhouse and without a doubt the most exhilarating. The challenges have become grand opportunities for creativity and a lot of fun. The design team has worked with renewed enthusiasm and includes younger talent which infuses everyone with their fervor for the Design House. To see the wealth of talent grow in Macon’s design community is a good sign that they believe in the resettlement of the downtown area and the continued preservation of what was and can be again one of the most elegant and diverse historic districts in the country. In her 40+ years of practice, Walden has addressed a multitude of design styles and this year is looking forward to the point-counterpoint of designing a contemporary space within a building whose old walls could tell endless stories of Macon’s colorful history. In addition to her interior design practice, Walden is a freelance writer whose work is currently featured in The Telegraph in Macon and Georgia Family Magazine.

SUSAN RAZA 4. LOWER LEVEL BATHROOM Decorative and faux painting, color consulting, painting murals and furniture is how it started here in Macon. While Susan still works with paint she is now also managing Transformational Designs, Inc. (TDI), a small remodeling and construction company with her husband Omer Kondo. TDI does bath and kitchen renovations, prepares properties going on the market, restores and repairs historic homes as well as many other types of projects. Susan’s experience and degree in Interior Design, design for woven textiles, coloring plates for the printed fabrics home furnishings industry in New York, drawing demolition and reconstruction plans for the corporate world in Princeton and Wall St. have provided experience necessary for working with remodeling and expanding her ability to create new and comfortable environments. This year doing a small room with no windows creates its own challenge in how to give this space a sense of contact with outside light and air. The walls will be treated with a decorative paint technique using iridescent paints for an ephemeral feel while the room is accented with black to pick up the relationship with the black and white tile shower. The marble counter top shimmers with light adding to the intention of sparkle and light while keeping it serene. A delicate balance is created using graphic patterns against softness while warm and cool whites play off of the warmth of the terrazzo floor for a contemporary look.

SUZANNE MACCRONE ROGERS 5. STAIRWELL Suzanne MacCrone Rogers received her training in architecture from the University of California, Berkley. While an undergraduate, Suzanne enrolled in art history and architecture classes in Florence, Italy. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts in architecture, Suzanne worked in the landscape architecture field and continued with graduate studies in architecture, interior design, and art history with the University of Georgia in Cortona, Italy. As a graduate assistant at UGA, Suzanne taught furniture design, color and materials, and architectural graphics. She graduated from UGA with a Master of Fine Arts in interior design. Suzanne’s education in the fields of architecture, interior design, landscape design, photography, furniture, and the arts, as well as her experience living and studying in Italy, have given her a reverence for tradition and the confidence to endlessly innovate in a playfully decadent and effortlessly chic style. Using her signature mix of layers of patterns and bold color palettes, enhanced with subtle contrasts of traditional design motifs, the spaces Suzanne creates are fresh through the modern style of textures and colors. Creating an intimate, inviting, and personal space you envision is her goal.

JESSICA BAILEY 6. UPPER LEVEL HALLWAY Jessica Bailey was born and raised in Macon. She attended Georgia Southern University where she earned her B.S. in Interior Design. After interning with Atlanta based design firm, Peace Design, Inc., Jessica returned to Macon and worked as design assistant to Sally Draughon at Previews Interiors & Antiques. During her time at Previews, she gained valuable experience in high end residential design, and assisted in project management for all design projects, that include homes in Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida and Michigan. As an active member of the Young Patrons of Historic Macon, she participated in the 2013 Idea House at the Dannenberg Lofts. This is Jessica’s first decorators’ showhouse. Jessica is employed by Mrs. Howard in Atlanta, where she is currently project managing and designing for clients in the Southeast, and beyond.

7. UPPER LEVEL STUDIO

Macon based Event Designer, Canaan Marshall, and Atlanta based Interior Designer, Brooke Merrill, are committed to bringing “creative concepts for luxurious living” to Macon, Georgia. After being selected to chair the 2014 Atlanta Symphony Decorators’ Show House and Gardens, Brooke asked Canaan to host the annual Show House Opening Night Party to kick off the three week-long event. Canaan’s soiree was so well received by Atlanta society that he was recently asked by the Symphony to choreograph the ASO Gala, which is one of Atlanta’s most sought after tickets of the season.

By fulfilling all of their clients’ design and entertaining needs, they are able to offer Macon more than just another interior design firm. Through their volunteer and philanthropic design work in the downtown area, Brooke and Cannaan hope to put Macon on the map as a coveted “luxury lifestyle”.

Brooke and Canaan both share a passion for dramatic design and extravagant entertaining. Whether for small intimate gatherings or large home renovations, the whimsical approach they bring to the design process sets their creations apart from other design firms. The two designers are also adamant in adding humor and playfulness to every project, which endears them both to every client. They have found a unique simpatico in each other (a rare fete in such a creative field), which led Brooke and Canaan to combine forces to launch a Macon based event and design firm, Marshall Merrill.

Marshall Merrill’s approach to creating a luxury lifestyle is evident in the studio apartment at this year’s Design House. The is the perfect space to show potential residents how thoughtful design can help you achieve all the elements you need to live without sacrificing the luxury you want. Strategically placed furniture will create three defined living spaces: •Floating island furniture to define the kitchen •Banquet corner to define the breakfast nook •Screen and console to define the traffic hall •Sitting area with convertible day bed to define the entertainment and sleeping space The studio will be functional and stylish, everything a resident will need to live like a rock star in a very small space.

Tracy has been featured in Spectacular Homes of Georgia, designed for the Museum of Arts and Sciences Festival of Trees as well as the Cherry Blossom Festival Home Tour. Martha McKay Maxwell, a Macon native, is owner of the residential design firm McKay Design. She is a graduate of Samford University with a Bachelor of Arts in interior design and a minor in art. Martha focuses her design ability on creating beautiful and unique personal spaces; her passion for creativity makes her work refined and timeless.

With a degree in interior design from the University of Georgia and design experience in London, England, and Atlanta, Georgia, Andrea Proctor brings a unique perspective to every style. Good design affects human behavior and function, creates mood and impacts efficiency. As a designer, Andrea’s goal is to listen very carefully to what her clients need in their interior environment. She carefully evaluates the challenges and offers beautiful, yet functional solutions. Attention to detail, a creative use of color, texture, and pattern, and an effort to incorporate the client’s favorite pieces and treasured objects, are the elements that make each one of her designs a success.

Her ardor for craftsmanship and innovation is drawn from Martha’s personal interests in historic preservation and restoration, art, and architecture. Her self-described style is classic with a modern influence. Martha embraces all types and styles of design with careful consideration, understanding that the execution of captivating and comfortable interiors requires organization, imagination, and a fine attention to detail. Her work experience includes residential construction and space planning, interior design, and lighting selections. Martha also participated in Historic Macon’s Showhouses in 2011 and 2013, and the 2012 Historic Macon Idea House. Photos of her work have appeared in Macon Magazine and The Macon Telegraph.

She attended the University of Georgia, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in interior design from the Lamar Dodd School of Art. He had no background in gardening and with a determined focus as a football coach and later an athletic administrator, Dooley has become a Master Gardener developing one of the best mini-botanical gardens in the state.

His mentors have been none other than the National and International renowned horticulturist Dr. Mike Dirr and Dr. Allan Armitage, the gurus of woody and herbaceous plants respectively. Dooley has even written a book about his “journey” that is fully illustrated by Georgia artist Steve Penley. Coach Dooley will discuss his journey and his garden during this session.

Husbands will feature recipes from his latest book Grill to Perfection. In this demonstration, Andy will show how to prepare an entire meal on your grill, appetizers and dessert included! According to Heritage Radio Network, there’s perhaps no greater expert on the food and foodways of the African Diaspora than Dr. Jessica B. Harris. She is the author of twelve critically acclaimed cookbooks documenting the foods and foodways of the African Diaspora including Iron Pots and Wooden Spoons: Africa’s Gifts to New World Cooking, Sky Juice and Flying Fish Traditional Caribbean Cooking, The Welcome Table: African American Heritage Cooking, The Africa Cookook: Tastes of a Continent, and Beyond Gumbo: Creole Fusion Food from the Atlantic Rim. Harris also conceptualized and organized The Black Family Reunion Cook Book. Her most recent book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America, was the International Association for Culinary Professionals 2012 prize winner for culinary history.

For almost 50 years, Vince Dooley has had an enduring impact on the University of Georgia and collegiate athletics across the country. Coach Dooley served as head football coach at UGA from December 1963 to January 1, 1989, and as Director of Athletics from 1979-2004. He has been the recipient of most of the nation’s highest honors in both coaching and athletic administration including the James. J. Corbett Memorial Award, John L. Toner Award, Amos Alonzo Stagg Award, Wooden Award, Bear Bryant Award, the Duffy Daugherty Memorial Award, and most recently was inducted into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame. His contributions to the University were recognized in 2008 with the dedication of the Vince Dooley Athletic Complex on Nov. 29, 2008. A special statue and garden commemorate his accomplishments along with the naming of all the south campus athletic facilities in his honor. His contributions to coaching and athletics administration are significantly defined by his place as the only person ever to hold the presidency of both the American Football Coaches Association and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Dr. Harris has been honored with many awards including a lifetime achievement award from the Southern Foodways Alliance (of which she is a founding member) and the Lafcadio Hearn award as a Louisiana culinary icon from The John Folse Culinary Academy at Louisiana’s Nicholls State University. In 2010, she was inducted into the James Beard Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in the United States. The Heritage Radio Network sums her up saying, “Dr. Jessica B. Harris damn near knows it all when it comes to African and Caribbean cuisines and culinary history. She’s a living legend”. Harris lives in New York, New Orleans and Martha’s Vineyard.

ANDY HUSBANDS TREMONT 647 Andy Husbands, the award-winning chef and owner of Tremont 647, has been enticing patrons with his adventurous American cuisine at the South End neighborhood restaurant in Boston for sixteen years. Chef Husbands has been praised both locally and nationally for his bold flavors and commitment to using the best, fresh, seasonal ingredients. He also receives nods from countless publications, from the Boston Globe and Boston Magazine to Wine Spectator and Star Chefs. Chef Husbands also competed in the sixth season of Fox Television Network’s “Hell’s Kitchen.” Recently, Chef Husbands published his third cookbook, Wicked Good Burgers, with co-authors Chris Hart and Andrea Pyenson. Chef Husbands’ first book, The Fearless Chef, has received widespread success, and his second book, Wicked Good Barbecue, received high accolades from both the food and entertainment industries, and received National Barbecue News “2012 Best Book of the Year” award. TIM MCNALLY In New Orleans, when the subject is wine and spirits, it is very difficult to leave Tim McNally out of the discussion. Tim is the Wine and Spirits Editor, columnist and feature writer for New Orleans Magazine; the Wine and Spirits Editor and weekly columnist, “Happy Hour,” for www.myneworleans.com; the Executive Editor and monthly features writer for Gulf Coast Wine + Dine Online; and creator and editor of his own website, www. winetalknola.com. All are in addition to his weekly hosting duties on The Wine Show. Over the years, Tim has proven to be a master interviewer, putting his guests at ease, and covering tactile and technical information so that even a novice can understand difficult agricultural and production concepts. COREY THOMAS JOY FULMER KROGER COMPANY DYER Chef Corey Thomas is a native of McDonough, Georgia. Chef Thomas was raised around the dexterous skills of his grandmother, Ruby Kate Brown, and his mother, Delores Brown Thomas. Their gift and passion has transcended his generation and continues to influence and inspire him today. Chef Thomas is a Graduate of Le Cordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts in Atlanta, GA. His instructors there saw the passion and drive that Chef Thomas demonstrated and they ensured he secured an internship position at Spoodle’s at Walt Disney World. He was featured in the Disney Did You Know? magazine. Chef Thomas is currently the Executive Chef for The Kroger Company. He works at one of the largest stores in the super southeast located in Griffin, Georgia. Prior to beginning his career at Kroger Chef Thomas worked at the Sheraton Hotel in Downtown Atlanta, Seasons Bistro in McDonough Georgia, and Georgia State University. While Chef Thomas has many accomplishments on which to boast, he is most proud of having been featured in his hometown circular The Henry Times as chef of the week in 2011. Chef ’s motto is “Where integrity and passion meets food.”

FOUR SEASONS OF GEORGIA, LLC For the past 30 years, Joy Dyer has lived and worked in Macon, GA in many different fields from Agriculture to Fashion and Healthcare to Hospitality. Dyer came to Georgia after graduating from Clemson University in Entomology. She worked in sales and business development for an Ag Chemical Company, and spent about 5 years in the industry, specifically in the AG and Turf and Ornamentals area. She moved back to Macon, married and changed careers. She answered a newspaper ad from the Medical Center of Central GA, launching her second career in healthcare. Dyer was the founding CEO for Secure Health Plans of GA, and the Occupational Health Center. Dyer wanted to work from home, manage a farm and her two boys. She decided to delve into the fashion industry, and spent 11 years in the industry, and traveled the country with Weekenders. The company closed in 2008, and her career changed again. Her passion was digging in the dirt, so in 2009 she joined a local landscape architecture firm to follow her dream. She was responsible for Sales and Business Development and growing the Macon operation. In 2012, she launched her own landscape design firm, Four Seasons of Georgia, LLC; a unique style of landscaping design and maintenance with a woman’s touch is gaining momentum in Central Georgia.
