ride is a desired trait in a school community. Whether our students are showing school spirit at a sporting event, signing the honor code on a test or welcoming a newcomer into the school community, we are proud of Stratford and the opportunities provided. We are also proud of all that our students accomplish, including: 100% college matriculation, five Athletic Excellence Awards and seven runners-up awards in 12 years, 188 state athletic titles, debate team’s 34-year winning streak and 2013 nation’s top debate program award, the seventh graders recognized by the Duke TIP for scholastic aptitude, students performing in local and state-level fine arts endeavors, as well as the Stratford students who receive AP scholar designations at a rate of 80% versus the state average of 55%. The pride our students feel towards their school is another way we are ...

FRIDAY SESSIONS Classical interiors 10:00–11:00 AM • Elizabeth Dowling • GEORGIA ROOM In her presentation, Elizabeth Dowling will discuss her new book Classical Interiors: Historical and Contemporary. The book offers an authoritative survey of the best of classical design and the work of its most important figures from the seventeenth century to present day. Developed across many centuries and numerous cultures, classical design is a language of details understood worldwide - scale and proportion, symmetry, Greek and Roman foundations of style and

form. This lush monograph is richly illustrated with archival materials and photographs. It also includes portfolios of contemporary projects by presenting the award-winning work of Juan Pablo Molyneux, Studio Peregalli, Quinlan & Francis Terry, Fairfax & Sammons, Gil Schafer, Historical Concepts, Ferguson & Shamamian, Allan Greenberg, Robert A. M. Stern, and many others, offering the best examples of classical architecture being created presently.

Romantic at Heart 11:30–12:30 PM • THOMAS SULLY • GEORGIA ROOM Thomas Sully, painter and great-great-great grandson of the acclaimed 19th century portraitist of the same name, will present a brief overview of Romanticism and then follow the threads of this movement through the genres of portraiture and landscape. He will examine the Romantic qualities in his forebear’s work and discuss the importance of continuing the tradition of the humanistic and empathetic portrait today. Sully will also discuss the historic and present day practice of the

portrait miniature, including the mysterious sub-genre of the eye portrait. In landscape, Sully will describe the Romantic tendency toward nature worship. He will also consider Tonalism and the spiritual and philosophical underpinnings of this aesthetic dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Throughout the lecture, he will show inspiring historical images, along with his own efforts to update the Romantic tradition for a contemporary audience.

FOSTER’S MARKET COOKING 2:00–3:00 PM • SARA FOSTER • THEATER Sara Foster, owner of Foster’s Market in Durham, North Carolina, cooks Southern favorites with a gourmet and fresh twist. In Foster’s Friday afternoon session, she prepares spring pea toast with lemon olive oil and pea shoots. She will demonstrate how to trim and grill a pork tenderloin, prepare a spicy pepper jelly marinade. Foster serves this dish often when she entertains because it’s

easy and tasty. Lastly, Sara assembles a sweet potato spoon bread, which is “a cross between grits and cornbread, with a lovely, dense, pudding-like texture.” No cooking demonstration would be complete without samples. The audience is welcome to taste all of the fresh treats. Following her demonstration, Foster will sign books and answer your cooking questions.

FRIDAY SESSIONS

Protecting Macon’s buildings for the next century.

SOUTHERN CARAMEL CAKE BAKING 3:30–4:30 PM • MARK BALLARD • THEATER Mark Ballard will make his “signature” cake—OldFashioned Caramel Cake—on Friday afternoon. In Mark’s opinion, a caramel cake MUST be covered in icing that is made from scratch using sugar that the cook has caramelized and added to a pot of delicious, creamy ingredients! “It’s not really an old-fashioned Southern caramel cake if you start with brown sugar!” Mark will

share his secrets of baking scrumptious, no-fail layers that can be used with any icing. And, he’ll provide step-by-step instruction as he creates the home-made caramel. Of course, the audience will be encouraged to sample! And someone will win the opportunity to “lick the spoon.”

Really Tasting Wine is a wine session about wine appreciation and the wine tasting experience. Tim McNally, wine judge, will teach guests how to get the most out of their tasting experience. McNally says, wine tasting is all for pleasure, but the more you know, the more you will enjoy. During the session, the audience will taste five wines—Mirassou Pinot Grigio, Mirassou Sauvignon Blanc, MacMurray Ranch Pinot Noir, Frei

Brothers Merlot and Louis Martini Cabernet Sauvignon—and learn about what to look for when tasting wine and how to taste for maximum enjoyment. These wines will provide a range of flavors and bouquets. They are created from different grapes with differing heritage, from different places; and all have interesting stories to tell. McNally will also knock down a few myths.

SATURDAY SESSIONS SOUTHERN STYLE – TOWN & COUNTRY 9:00–10:00 AM • SUSAN SULLY • GEORGIA ROOM Based on Sully’s books, The Southern Cottage, The Southern Cosmopolitan, and Houses with Charm, this lecture compares and contrasts the South’s urban homes and country retreats. It provides an excellent overview of the various sophisticated styles of architecture and decorative arts that flourished in the South’s most cultured cities from the late seventeenth

century to the present. Cottages chosen from these and other traditional Southern resort destinations will be contrasted with fine historical residences in Charleston, New Orleans, Savannah, and elsewhere. This lecture gives a comprehensive overview of Southern architecture and interior design and demonstrates how delightfully varied it is.

tablescapes in a snap 10:00–11:00 aM • Mark Ballard • GEORGIA ROOM It’s been said that presentation is everything! Mark will create a feast for the eyes as he talks and demonstrates tablescaping. The art of creating a beautiful table or buffet is something that anyone can do using items that most people already have in their homes. Mark will show a variety of themes for spring while creating a gorgeous

floral centerpiece. He’ll demonstrate how to combine colors, textures and elements to create a stunning backdrop for any meal or party using linens, napkins, table settings, glassware and decorative pieces. A video presentation of tables he’s created for clients and for his own home will be shown.

Grits & Slaw 12:00–1:00 PM • SARA FOSTER • THEATER Sara Foster brings southern food to a new level with her cooking demonstration, Grits & Slaw! Every Southerner has a favorite recipe for cheese biscuits, cheese crackers or cheese straws. Foster shares her favorite version of the buttery crackers that have an unexpected heat and flavor from the addition of rosemary and chili peppers. Also on the menu, creamy grits with roasted butternut

squash and blue cheese. Foster discusses different combinations of vegetables and cheese that can be used in grits. On the side, she serves spring coleslaw with fresh herbs and honey citrus vinaigrette. There is no guilt in these fresh and healthy recipes. Samples will be available for the audience and all of the recipes are out of Foster’s cookbook, Sara Foster’s Southern Kitchen.

the peak of chic 1:00–2:00 pM • jennifer boles • GEORGIA ROOM Jennifer Boles, founder of the popular design blog The Peak of Chic and contributing editor to House Beautiful, will be speaking on her latest book, In with the Old: Classic Decor from A to Z. The book is a charming encyclopedia of the most stylish decorating details (including chintz, striped walls, and orangeries) that

were favored by the great tastemakers of the twentieth century. Jennifer’s talk will profile her favorite decorating essentials from the past and examine how they were used in the twentieth century’s most beautiful and celebrated interiors.

He is also reputed to have been behind the rise of a few notable Georgia politicians of his time. In 2012 Townsend partnered with Georgia Distilling Company to bring back his Granddaddy’s moonshine. During his session, Townsend will talk about his moonshine products, what is in them and how to mix them. Townsend will answer questions and give moonshine tastings.

SARA FOSTER Sara Foster and her husband, Peter Sellers, moved to Durham, North Carolina, and opened Foster’s Market in 1990, introducing great seasonal foods to eat in or take out, specialty grocery items, locally roasted coffee and select wines. Foster’s immediately became a wonderful gathering spot for Durham residents and Duke University students, professors and employees. In order to serve the increasing demand, additional space and food selections have been added, but one thing has remained constant: Foster’s Market’s devotion to complete customer satisfaction. The guiding principles have always been to serve great-tasting food, offer superior customer service, have fun and earn a living. The market/cafe was such a success that Foster opened a second Foster’s Market location in 1998 in Chapel Hill. Over the years, Foster’s Market has won many awards from “Small Business of the Year” to “Best Lunch Spot in the Triangle.” Foster also received the award for “2010 Restaurateur of the Year” from the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association. foster’s market cooking friday 2:00-3:00 p.m. grits and slaw saturday 12:00-1:00 p.m.
