Opportunities if you are a student. Gateway is a programme that gives you the chance to decide if a career in barbering, beauty or hairdressing is right for you while you’re still at school. You’ll spend time in a working beauty clinic, salon or barbershop learning real skills on the job and working on credits for your NCEA. If you’re creative, enjoy working with people, have an eye for detail and a keen interest in beauty or hair then this could be an ideal opportunity for you! HITO offers you gateway programmes for: • Barbering • Beauty Therapy • Hairdressing (Year 1) • Hairdressing (Year 2)

What’s in it for you? •

You can try out a small part of a career before you leave school.

You can see what it’s like in a real work setting, learning values and expectations

You will start a relationship with HITO that will help you if you do an apprenticeship or further training later on.

You will meet people who can give you real support and encourage you.

The learning you do in Gateway act as a stepping stone for your career and gives you a chance to see what it’s like to work in beauty or hair. If you decide that this is a career for you then you are already ahead of the pack with credits and work experience. There are lots of exciting opportunities out there for qualified barbers, beauty therapists and hairdressers: •

Competing at competitions locally and internationally.

Owning and running a business.

Film, television, or theatre work.

Working for a product company in sales, development or business.

Work in education.

Travelling, enjoying other cultures and meeting new people.

If you’re interested in the Gateway programme, the first step is for your school to contact HITO. We’ll work with your school Gateway Coordinator to get you signed up. At the salon, beauty clinic or barbershop, you will work to get credits and get practical on the job experience. At the end you will get a certificate showing what you have achieved.

Opportunities if you are an employer. The Gateway programme gives employers the opportunity to help support and train a local young person who is interested in pursuing a career in your industry. Many employers often go on to hire their Gateway student as a trainee or apprentice. There is evidence that Gateway students who move into employment achieve more and turn into great employees.

Employers who train will: •

Have the services of a young assistant keen to learn the ‘trade’.

Be involved in training from the earliest stage.

Support the local secondary school.

Be able to work with a student when considering looking to employ new staff.

Share knowledge and passion for the industry.

Impart good work ethics for the future.

Training is an investment. The only way for any employer to get the most out of the Gateway experience is to invest time and energy into training and supporting the student. If you have the time or resources, then taking on a Gateway student can bring new ideas, energy and support to your business.

Schools If you or your students are interested in the Gateway programme then follow these steps: 1. Contact HITO on (04) 499 1180 or email gateway@hito.org.nz 2. We will send you a “memorandum of understanding 3. Complete and sign the memorandum 4. Send the memorandum back with completed student enrolment forms 5. HITO will then send the resources to you for your student with a signed copy of the memorandum. 6. Arrange a placement with an employer. Once this is done, email HITO to confirm the employer. 7. Once we know the employer, HITO will then assign a verifier. A verifier is someone who will visit the business and assess the student’s skills at the end of the programme.
