looking for a job can be daunting Check out our top tips for scoring a job at your dream workplace: 1. Get your CV ready •

Don’t wait until the end of your course to look for work – that’s when everyone else will be looking! Start your job hunt early.

A well-presented CV makes a good first impression. The CareersNZ website has some good CV templates that you can check out. Go to www.careers.govt.nz/how-to-get-a-job/cvs-and-cover-letters/.

Make sure your CV shows the skills you have and who you are (include a photo of yourself). Include information about any previous work or experience you have. You should also add some good referees, a small portfolio of some of the work you have done on your course and reports from your course.

2. Put yourself out there •

Employers like people who use their initiative, so instead of emailing or calling a business you want to work at, go in and personally drop off your CV. Ask to speak to the owner or salon manager when you go in.

Offer to do work experience for free so they can see your work ethic, dedication and skills.

Be polite and remember to thank the interviewer for taking the time to see you.

Always give the places you visit a follow up phone call. Take a business card so you have the right phone number.

3. Make a good first impression •

Employers are looking for someone who is well presented, so dress appropriately in clean, smart clothes – no jeans, plunging necklines.

If you’re a hairdresser, your hair can be your biggest advertisement. Make sure it’s clean and styled.

The details are important. Polish your shoes and manicure your nails!

Don’t chew gum or smell of smoke, it’s unprofessional.

Remember, you only get one chance to make a good first impression, so make the most of it!
