A rub. It’s all that separates a flawless round from “better luck next time.” But you’re not depending on luck. You’re depending on countless hours in and out of the saddle. And you didn’t come here for just a ribbon. You came for the championship ribbon. So ask yourself, does your horse have the stomach to win?

HITStory of the Desert Circuit

The 2018 season will mark the 26th edition of the HITS Coachella Desert Circuit in Thermal, California. Hosted at the Empire Polo Club in Indio for the first time in 1992 as a threeweek circuit, it is safe to say that HITS Coachella, now an eight-week circuit, has come a long way since its emergence in the desert.

Indeed, the location, in the famed Coachella Valley, also home to the Coachella Music Fest, the Career Builder PGA Golf Tournament, and the BNP Paribas Open ATP/WTA Tennis Tournament, is in the heart of one of the most beautiful resort areas in the world. Surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, where hot air balloons often fly high over the grounds on a crisp show morning, the HITS Desert Horse Park has redefined horse showing on the west coast.

“Location, location, location,” said Tom Struzzieri, owner and CEO of HITS, Inc. “I had run shows in California for a several years prior to moving to Indio. Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Rosa – if it had ‘Santa’ in the name, I ran a show there,” he joked. “What finally pulled the circuit together into the success it is today is the location [now in the Coachella Valley of Southern California, less than 30 minutes from Palm Springs]. With the nearly perfect climate, gorgeous mountain landscapes, and surrounding upscale resort areas, the Indio and Thermal locations have really allowed this circuit to thrive.” HITS Coachella 2018 Official Show Program

“We had purchased the Indio property [which is now owned by the Coachella Music Fest] in the late 1990’s, but with the continued growth of the shows, we began to outgrow that property just a few years later. When I found the current property adjacent to the Jacquelyn Cochran Airport, I knew we could build one of the premiere show grounds in the country,” Struzzieri continued. With 1,200 permanent stalls, 11 show rings, two permanent, climate controlled VIP clubs and a dozen more permanent structures for All photos by ©ESI Photography

restaurants and vendors, the HITS Desert Horse Park is a gem in the desert, and a jewel of HITS show facilities nationwide.

for every level of rider, from Leadline to Grand Prix. Throughout the course of the circuit there are a number of special events featured for hunter, jumper, and equitation riders – including chances to qualify for the HITS Championships, Marshall and Sterling Finals, NCEA Hunter Seat Equitation Finals, and the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix.

For over a quarter of a century, the HITS Desert Circuit has not only been a fixture of equestrian show jumping, but also, a fixture in the community. Hotels, restaurants, resorts and shops around the area all echo the same feeling. “It is, without any question, one of the largest events to come into the Indio/Thermal area during that time period. We value HITS as a partner and look forward to the HITS Desert Circuit for many, many more years,” said Aaron Segal, General Manager of the Best Western Date Tree, a partner of HITS for nearly 20 years.

“We pride ourselves on offering something for everyone, from the Pre-Children’s Adult Hunter Classic at 2’ to the AIG Million at 1.50m. I think you’ll agree that we have that covered,” said Struzzieri. “Continual improvements being made to the property, over a dozen for just this year, is a testament to our dedication to both horse and human comforts at our showgrounds.”

Not only has the location changed and the length of the circuit increased over its 26 years of existence, but the variety of classes offered has expanded. HITS Coachella now hosts over 400 classes each week of the circuit, offering competition HITS Coachella 2018 Official Show Program

Introducing

Platinum Performance GI ®

Equine Wellness & Performance Formula + Digestive Care THE HEALTH OF THE EQUINE GUT is correlated to gastrointestinal (GI) function, metabolism, immunity and more. This is why we have been hard at work researching, formulating, testing and conducting trials with Platinum Performance® GI. This gastrointestinal-focused approach to total horse health supports wellness and is recommended for horses in training or competition as well as senior horses. Platinum Performance® GI can help maintain health while traveling, during antibiotic or NSAID therapy and for horses that have digestive health concerns or difficulty maintaining weight.

OVERALL WELLNESS

DIGESTION

IMMUNITY

This veterinary-developed formula provides omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and trace minerals, along with Bio-Sponge®, prebiotics, probiotics and glutamine for GI support.

Prebiotics nourish the “good” bacteria in the gut and support the digestion of fiber, while probiotics are important for absorption of nutrients.

An estimated 70-80% of the immune system resides in the gut. Nourishing the beneficial bacteria can help support a healthy gut barrier and microflora balance.

To find the right Platinum Performance® solution, and to learn about the science behind the supplements, call or visit our website, or speak with your equine veterinarian.

HITS Endurance Triathlon Series A distance for everyoneTM

Approaching his 50th birthday, and reflecting on his wish to continue to be a positive role model for his three children, HITS President and CEO Thomas Struzzieri decided to take up the sport of triathlon. As soon as he started training Tom was hooked. He was instantly captivated with the sense of fulfillment, well-being and personal accomplishment that came from training and competing.

locations near major population centers. In keeping with the HITS Endurance mantra, “A distance for everyone™,” all events include five race distances ranging from the full 140.6 miles to the supersprint, and marathon to a family friendly mile. With a focus on creating an inclusive atmosphere, HITS produces endurance events that are no different than HITS Horse Shows. HITS’ philosophy is to capture the interest of beginners and get them to commit to a lifetime habit of health, fitness and enjoyment.

Tom’s personal interest, coupled with his longtime love of event production, ultimately blossomed into a business interest. With increasing participation in endurance sports and a seeming lack of race organizations that could deliver world-class production techniques with good old-fashioned customer service, Tom decided to form a new division of his longstanding company. And hence, HITS Endurance was born. HITS Triathlon Series’ first event took place in December 2011 in La Quinta, California, near HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal.

At all HITS event locations, HITS staff works closely with economic development officials, permitting authorities, law enforcement agencies, emergency medical providers and other community leaders to ensure a safe and enjoyable event that benefits all stakeholders. At its California event venues, HITS has developed enduring relationships with officials at Rivco Parks and Recreation and Napa County over the past six years as it produces significant positive economic impacts on the Coachella Valley and Napa Valley areas.

A Shout Out To Our Sponsors

Horseflight

Horseflight just recently celebrated their tenyear anniversary and has been a sponsor of HITS for five of those years. Based out of Redfield Farms, owned by Emil Spadone, and serving a total of eleven different airports, Horseflight has the ability to ship horses both domestic and international. Horseflight offers weekly flights to and from Europe and the rest of the world, as well as weekly domestic flights and ground transportation. “We are horse people first, dedicated to the wellbeing of your horse in transit and to its arrival in top condition,” stated Emil Spadone, founder and managing partner of Horseflight. Spending much of his time at HITS horse shows while continuing to establish his business, Emil Spadone felt it made sense to join forces and chose to make Horseflight a HITS sponsor. “We are especially excited about this upcoming season with HITS, our renewed commitment to customer service, and our safe, timely delivery,” said Spadone. “Nicole Judd and Devon Kaminsky have taken over the operational lead, following Bastian Schroder’s Departure – and the immediate results are impressive!” Just two months into new management Horseflight has found ways to streamline their process to keep owners, trainers, and most importantly the horses happy! Showing with HITS in 2018? See why HITS chooses Horseflight by visiting their website at Horseflight.com.

KindredBio

KindredBio is making extraordinary strides in revolutionizing veterinary medicine and chose to make their inaugural leap into the equine industry by becoming a sponsor of HITS in 2016. “HITS was chosen as our first sponsorship in the industry for its showcase of hunter/jumper excellence, in addition to its extensive national prominence within the equine community,” said Alison Morgan, KindredBio’s Senior Marketing Specialist. By developing therapies, technologies and medications that help bridge the gap between animal and human medicine, KindredBio strives to achieve its mission to provide animals the same innovative medicine as human beings. Driven by a love for animals, their business plan is rooted in efficiency and innovation, adapting molecules and biologics that have already been legitimized in the human world for repurposing in cats, dogs, and horses. KindredBio works in collaboration with veterinarians in order to create products that are needed in veterinary medicine. KindredBio strives to revolutionize veterinary medicine by offering animal companions the same access to quality medications and treatments that are available to humans. Keep your four-legged friends healthy while you’re traveling to HITS this season and stay connected with KindredBio online at KindredBio.com.

OSPHOS® (clodronate injection) Bisphosphonate For use in horses only. Brief Summary (For Full Prescribing Information, see package insert) CAUTION: Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. DESCRIPTION: Clodronate disodium is a non-amino, chlorocontaining bisphosphonate. Chemically, clodronate disodium is (dichloromethylene) diphosphonic acid disodium salt and is manufactured from the tetrahydrate form. INDICATION: For the control of clinical signs associated with navicular syndrome in horses. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Horses with hypersensitivity to clodronate disodium should not receive OSPHOS. WARNINGS: Do not use in horses intended for human consumption.

As with all drugs, side effects may occur. In field studies, the most common side effects reported were signs of discomfort or nervousness, colic, and/or pawing. OSPHOS should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares, or mares intended for breeding. Use of OSPHOS in patients with conditions affecting renal function or mineral or electrolyte homeostasis is not recommended. Refer to the prescribing information for complete details or visit www.dechra-us.com or call 866.933.2472.

CAUTION: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of licensed veterinarian. * Freedom of Information Summary, Original New Animal Drug Application, NADA 141-427, for OSPHOS. HUMAN WARNINGS: Not for human use. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. Consult a physician in case of accidental human exposure. PRECAUTIONS: As a class, bisphosphonates may be associated with gastrointestinal and renal toxicity. Sensitivity to drug associated adverse reactions varies with the individual patient. Renal and gastrointestinal adverse reactions may be associated with plasma concentrations of the drug. Bisphosphonates are excreted by the kidney; therefore, conditions causing renal impairment may increase plasma bisphosphonate concentrations resulting in an increased risk for adverse reactions. Concurrent administration of other potentially nephrotoxic drugs should be approached with caution and renal function should be monitored. Use of bisphosphonates in patients with conditions or diseases affecting renal function is not recommended. Administration of bisphosphonates has been associated with abdominal pain (colic), discomfort, and agitation in horses. Clinical signs usually occur shortly after drug administration and may be associated with alterations in intestinal motility. In horses treated with OSPHOS these clinical signs usually began within 2 hours of treatment. Horses should be monitored for at least 2 hours following administration of OSPHOS. Bisphosphonates affect plasma concentrations of some minerals and electrolytes such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, immediately post-treatment, with effects lasting up to several hours. Caution should be used when administering bisphosphonates to horses with conditions affecting mineral or electrolyte homeostasis (e.g. hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, hypocalcemia, etc.). The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in horses less than 4 years of age. The effect of bisphosphonates on the skeleton of growing horses has not been studied; however, bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclast activity which impacts bone turnover and may affect bone growth. Bisphosphonates should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares, or mares intended for breeding. The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in breeding horses or pregnant or lactating mares. Bisphosphonates are incorporated into the bone matrix, from where they are gradually released over periods of months to years. The extent of bisphosphonate incorporation into adult bone, and hence, the amount available for release back into the systemic circulation, is directly related to the total dose and duration of bisphosphonate use. Bisphosphonates have been shown to cause fetal developmental abnormalities in laboratory animals. The uptake of bisphosphonates into fetal bone may be greater than into maternal bone creating a possible risk for skeletal or other abnormalities in the fetus. Many drugs, including bisphosphonates, may be excreted in milk and may be absorbed by nursing animals. Increased bone fragility has been observed in animals treated with bisphosphonates at high doses or for long periods of time. Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption and decrease bone turnover which may lead to an inability to repair micro damage within the bone. In humans, atypical femur fractures have been reported in patients on long term bisphosphonate therapy; however, a causal relationship has not been established. ADVERSE REACTIONS: The most common adverse reactions reported in the field study were clinical signs of discomfort or nervousness, colic and/or pawing. Other signs reported were lip licking, yawning, head shaking, injection site swelling, and hives/pruritus.

What it Takes The Road to the Longines FEI World CupTM Jumping Thermal

All photos by ©ESI Photography

The FEI World Cup™ Series began in 1979 and today is comprised of 14 leagues from countries all over the world. This series is a competitive show jumping competition composed of the world’s best show jumping riders. This is not an average caliber of show jumping. This series was created as a test of mental and physical strength from both horse and rider. There are a number of qualifying rounds that take place a c r o s s the world and a limited number of riders will be invited to the final, which will be in Paris, France for 2018. This final is both a team and an

individual competition, making it unique from other show jumping competitions. In the 38 Finals held through 2016, Germany (10) and the United States (9) have emerged with the most titles. Previous FEI World Cup™ Jumping Finals held in the United States include Baltimore (1980), Tampa (1989), Del Mar, CA (1992), Las Vegas (2000, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2015), and Omaha (2017). McClain Ward was the most recent American to win the FEI World Cup™ Final in 2017. “At the end of the day I love to compete. It’s stressful, it’s hard, it takes something from you for sure. I’m not going to say it doesn’t, but it gives you much more in return and on days like this, it’s all worth it.” said Ward after his victory. Rich Fellers is another American who won the FEI World Cup Final™ in 2012, being the first American to win it in 25 years. In the same year he went on to place 8th at the London Olympic Games. One might assume that this competition is no more challenging than the Olympics or the World Equestrian Games, however that assumption is not entirely true. The World Cup™ is different in that there is

HITS Coachella 2018 Official Show Program

Page 52

not much down time for the horse and rider to recuperate in between rounds. Riders also accumulate penalties throughout each round, so if they do not have a strong start, chances are they will not finish well. It takes an incredible amount of stamina and power to win the prestigious title of the FEI World Cup™. As with most professional sports, there is no checklist for success or easy way into the big leagues. For a show jumper in pursuit of this level of competition, it’s a blend of the right ingredients: a strong support system, a fiery passion for the sport and an unwavering commitment to a lifestyle. At this level, show jumping becomes a way of life as opposed to just a sport. Riders at the FEI World Cup™ must demonstrate excellent emotional control, as well. To put these skills into perspective, riders must think quickly and proactively while simultaneously using a series of subtle demands to guide an animal that might easily weigh a full ton, through a course of jumps that exceed the height of an average female.

It is those extremes that make the sport of Show Jumping distinct. Those extremes bring together unique and immensely talented horse & rider teams from around the globe, to compete for victory under one common denominator: the FEI World Cup™. HITS is thrilled to host the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Thermal 2018 on Saturday, February 10 for yet another year. “This competition brings equestrians and non-equestrians alike, from all over the country to watch some of the best show jumping in the world. We are honored to have been chosen to host this event again and are looking forward to an exciting competition” says HITS Owner and CEO, Tom Struzzieri. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online or at the gate.

Equestrian events, like the FEI World Cup™, are among the most visually compelling competitions in the world of sport, and is also a unique Olympic sport where a human and animal are partners. What spectators will also appreciate is that both men and women compete on equal footing, in the same arena.

6th Annual AIG Million

For the sixth year in a row, HITS is proud to announce that the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix will return to HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal, California. As the first stop on the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping Tour, the AIG Million Grand Prix is a great way to wrap up the winter circuit and dive “hoof” first into the spring and summer shows! “AIG has been such a great sponsor and supporter of the Million [Grand Prix] in Thermal, from the very beginning. It is always a pleasure working with them, so we are excited for another great year” said Tom Struzzieri, Owner and CEO of HITS, Inc. “Not only do we get to work with some great people during this special week, but we also get to see old and new friends at HITS Coachella, making the overall experience one that you don’t want to miss. “Many of the exhibitors already have their eye on the coveted title and the Champion prize for the upcoming year.

The Triple Crown of Show Jumping Tour starts with the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix at the HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal, California where Mandy Porter and MILANO took home the win in 2017. Competing against a field of previous Million Grand Prix Champions, Porter did not let the pressure get to her and not only took home the top placing, but also was ninth place aboard CORAL REEF FOLLOW ME II. In second, just behind Porter, were Tamie Phillips and CRISTAR, followed by Cian O’Connor and GOOD LUCK. The fourth place honor was won by a long-time veteran of the HITS $1 Million Grand Prix, Andre Thieme aboard CONTHENDRIX. Rounding out the top five was Eric Navet, aboard his mount CATYPSO. Several of the competitors, including Mandy Porter and Andre Thieme, continued on in the Triple Crown of Show Jumping Tour and would join us just one short week later at the Great American Million at HITS Ocala.

AIG has been a sponsor of HITS and the AIG Million Grand Prix since the year it emerged at the HITS Desert Horse Park, back in 2013. “The world class competition and the opportunity to meet with horse owners and competitors is what keeps us coming back!” said David Hubbard, Vice President of AIG, “We appreciate the dedication that comes with owning, riding, and competing with horses.”

Lauren Hough and OHLALA captured the win in the second stop of the HITS Triple Crown. In both 2015 and 2016, Hough and OHLALA had placed fourth in the Great American Million Grand Prix, and to say that she was thrilled to finally capture the title is an understatement. “I was not feeling very confident in actually winning the class, because there were seven more behind me [in the jump-off],” said Hough in the post-victory press

conference. “I rode the fastest round that I could, and tried to keep the pressure on the ones to follow – and of course, you always hope to have a bit of luck on your side at events like this. Fortunately, I had all of the above.” Less than a second slower than Hough, was Aaron Vale and FINOU 4 taking home second place honors. In the standings again, taking home the third place honors was Andre Theime and CONTHENDRIX, followed by Ben Maher and DON VITO in fourth, and McLain Ward and HH CALLUS rounding out the top five. The third and final stop in the 2017 HITS Triple Crown Tour would go back to where it all began – in Saugerties, New York. All eyes were on Andre Thieme, who, as a previous Million Champion and having competed in the other two Million Grand Prix in the 2017 season was a crowd favorite. With a single time fault, Thieme and CONTHENDRIX pulled off the win, claiming the title in the 2017 Saugerties Million CSIO5*. In second place was Sharn Wordley and BARNETTA, followed by Daniel Bluman and LADRIANO Z. Fourth place honors were awarded to Amanda Derbyshire and LUIBANTA BH, with Catherine Tyree and ENJOY LOUIS to round out the top five. It was a stellar year for Theime and CONTHENDRIX, as they placed in each leg of the HITS Triple Crown of Showjumping Tour. This was Thieme’s third win on the Tour, the first having been the Saugerties Million (2011) aboard ARAGON ROUET and the second being the debut of the Great American Million (2014) at HITS Ocala with CONTANGA 3. Theme’s three-win record matches only that of Ward who is a two-time Saugerties Million Winner (2010 and 2012) and onetime AIG Million Winner (2015).

“The AIG Million attracts the highest level of competition. The excitement of seeing the matchup of riders and horses in this event draws a crowd of owners, families, spectators and others who love this sport. Each year seems to be better than the last. It is a great opportunity for AIG to be part of the sport, exhibiting our commitment and support,” David Hubbard commented. “There is so much that my colleagues and I thrive on throughout all of the HITS events: the high quality of competitors, the warmth of the people and the beautiful venue to name a few. We love meeting the riders, owners and spectators, and seeing the joy of the children who receive an AIG stuffed pony.”

Want to join the excitement and follow Thieme, Ward, and all your other favorite Grand Prix riders on their journey to claim the jewels of the 2018 HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping Tour? Join us and 5,000 of your closest friends to cheer on your favorite riders in this year’s AIG Million. Whether you join the crowds on the berm or in the bustling GoRentals VIP club, it’s guaranteed to be an experience that you won’t want to miss out on. Above Right: Many Porter and MILANO fly over the sponsor fence and claim the 2017 AIG Million Champion title.

HITS and AIG are looking forward to another great year in the Desert, and invite you to join us on March 18 to see who will be crowned the 2018 AIG $1 Million Grand Prix Champion. by Erin Webb

Show Jumping 101 All photos by ©ESI Photography

What You’re Watching & How to Judge it From Show Jumping to Trail Riding, equine sports test the level of both horse and rider’s physical and mental aptitude. This introduction will give you the scoop on all things Show Jumping so you might enjoy a day amidst the best-of-the-best, right in the heart of horse country at HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal, California.

Jumpers

Hunters

Jumper classes, such as the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites. These classes focus on the power and speed of the round and are judged on faults, a numerical penalty for an error, as well as time allowed for riding the set track. The standard is cut and dry: Horse & rider with the fastest round and the fewest number of faults wins.

Hunter classes judge the horse’s form and manner, while jumping a set course. A Hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with a consistent pace. Hunters are quiet and exhibit good manners, both in their jumping classes and on the flat in the under saddle class. The Hunter classes over jumps involve direct lines and straight-forward fences. Hunter courses are usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of the over fence classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before final placings are made.

The Breakdown – Knocking down a rail or any part of the jump that establishes height: Four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any of the fences on the course: Four faults. A second refusal: Elimination Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one in which there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner.

The Breakdown – Judge evaluates: the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait, both during the class and at the jog.

Above Right: A jumper rider soars over a fence at HITS Desert Circuit in hopes of a fast, clear round. Middle: A Hunter rider, polished and well-mannered on course, during a USHJA international Hunter Derby. Bottom: A rider must be perfect in equitation – correct form is most functional.

When a Hunter entry has finished their course, the judge will give a numerical score out of 100, based on how well they executed the course. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a wellgroomed horse all count in the Hunter ring. The highest score wins the blue ribbon.

Equitation

Equitation classes are judged on the rider’s form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, and their ability to perform certain tests with correct technique. The Judge gives Equitation riders, similar to Hunter riders, a score out of 100 based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue ribbon. The Breakdown - The winning ride demonstrates the best overall form and technique of rider. - Proper use of riding aids - Proper attire, correct form - Poise, cleanliness and polish of horse, rider and equipment
