Nomination is required for participation in US Dressage Finals classes, whether qualifying through placing in a Regional Championship class or by Wild Card Eligibility, or by alternate.

The Nomination (preliminary entry) deadline is midnight, 96 hours after the last championship day of your Regional Championship.

The Nomination fee paid will be applied to the total amount due at Closing Date. Nominated entries that do not receive a notification will receive a full refund of nomination fees paid minus the $10 processing fee per nominated class.

Priority for all stabling requests (including stabling in heated Alltech Barn and for double stalls) will be based on the date of receipt of the completed entry and allotted Alltech stalls per region. To maintain priority consideration, a completed entry must be received within five days after the nomination deadline.

Entry Opening Date is September 21, 2023. Entry Closing Date is October 16, 2023 midnight Eastern Time.

Congratulations on qualifying for this very important competition. Whether this is your first time qualifying or you have competed in a number of Regional Championships before you can be proud of your accomplishment.

Thanks to the continuous support of the Great American Insurance Group, the Great American/USDF Regional Championships have become an institution serving Adult Amateurs, Open and Junior/Young Riders. They can be part of the bigger goal of earning an invitation to the US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan or just as importantly they can be a stand-alone goal. Either way your participation is valued and appreciated.

Putting on a Regional Championships can be a major undertaking and requires a number of volunteers. Please be kind to them and remember to thank them for giving their time. If you are planning on the US Dressage Finals in November please remember to file your declaration!

USDF Statement on Animal Welfare

The United States Dressage Federation, Inc. (USDF), a federation of individual members and over 100 independent organizations throughout the United States, supports the concept of ethical treatment of animals.

Dressage is a classical method of training horses, based upon the horse’s natural responses, as carried out in a gradual, planned program during which the horse’s athletic abilities are improved in a systematic manner. As a result, the horse becomes capable, comfortable, and responsive in partnership with the rider without the use of force. Dressage competition at various levels of achievement is the ultimate test of the training program to determine whether the desired harmony between horse and rider has been achieved.

The rules pertaining to dressage competition prohibit the use of artificial appliances, training aids, and drugs, which would force the horse to submit. Instead, the emphasis is upon training and a cooperative partnership with the rider. Major competitions are carefully monitored to assure that there is no unnecessary force or harshness displayed.

Unlike other horse sports in which horses enter training at a relatively immature state, dressage training is usually not seriously begun until the horse is three or four. The top levels of achievement require five or more years of progressive training and it is not unusual to see horses in international competition in their late teens. This, in itself, places a premium on good care and soundness throughout the horse’s life.

While supporting the concept of animal welfare in its broadest form, the United States Dressage Federation, Inc., also recognizes that it is unrealistic to ascribe human emotions and responses to the horse which in its wild state is a creature of flight, living a hard and precarious existence. Under domestication, the horse is assured of ample food, water, and shelter, as well as protection against infectious diseases and damaging parasites, thus leading a longer and healthier life with a high rate of survival.

As an educational organization, USDF has numerous programs, which teach people how to pursue the accepted, humane training methods. A program of certifying instructors also emphasizes protecting the horse’s welfare in pursuit of dressage training.

Why hoof health matters

There’s more to your horse’s hooves than meets the eye. Your horse’s outer hoof wall surrounds, protects, and supports bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, nerves, and an intricate vascular network. These vascular pathways — composed of arteries, veins, and capillaries — function as a key element in maintaining the health of the foot.

Weak, unhealthy hooves can cause a variety of problems, from unsightly chips, cracks, and crumbling, to unsoundness and discomfort. But healthy hooves take a long time to grow. That’s because just like our own fingernails, the hoof wall is mostly composed of dead tissue, so it can’t mend and heal. Instead, damaged sections have to be regrown and replaced, and because your horse’s hooves grow from the hairline dow n at an average rate of ¼” per month, completely growing out a healthy hoof wall can take up to a year! That’s why it’s a smart choice to support healthy hooves before your horse’s hooves show signs of weakness.

Whether your horse is barefoot or shod, working with a knowledgeable hoof care professional is essential to maintaining healthy, well-balanced hooves. And like most things in your horse’s life, consistency is key. That’s why the first step to supporting optimal hoof health is finding a hoof care professional you trust, setting up a regular maintenance schedule, and sticking to it!

2. Environmental management

Your horse’s hoof is equipped to manage natural, gradual fluctuations in moisture. However, between the barn, the pasture, the ring, and the trails, you’d be surprised at how many times your horse’s hooves go from wet to dry and dry to wet every day. Unfortunately, frequent shifts from one environment to the other can cause the hoof wall to rapidly expand and contract, which may lead to cracks and other structural problems. In order to help your horse put his best foot forward, try to limit changes in moisture level as much as possible. For additional support, try a topical that actually helps stabilize moisture levels in the hoof, like a hoof hardener or a hoof gel instead of turning to a standard hoof moisturizer.

3. Exercise and Activity

You p robably know that turnout and exercise have many benefits for your horse, but did you know that one of the benefits is supporting hoof health?

horsekeeping often results in much less activity than that. Maximizing your horse’s turnout time and space is a great first step, but if time and/or space are limited — or your horse is a lazy pasture puff — consider looking for opportunities to up his exercise, including lunging, hot-walking, trail riding, etc.

4. Proper nutrition

Nutrition is another area of hoof health that can’t be ignored. Proper nutrition plays a vital role in helping your horse maintain healthy, resilient hooves, which is why daily support from a supplement is a smart way to support healthy hooves all year long.

Biotin is vital to the growth of strong, healthy hooves due to its role in collagen formation. Research has shown that supplementing with 10–30 mg of biotin per day may help promote growth rate and integrity in poor quality hooves. In addition to biotin, look for supplements that provide the amino acids critical to hoof health. Lysine, methionine, and threonine — which play a vital role in the formation of hoof structures—are essential amino acids, meaning that your horse can’t make them on his own and needs to get them from his diet.

1. Regular, professional maintenance

In the artificial environments we provide, horses simply can’t maintain their hooves as they would in their natural environment, and poorly maintained hooves can have far-reaching effects. A long, unbalanced hoof will negatively impact your horse’s way of going, putting undue strain on the joints, tendons, and ligaments of the entire limb. So it’s important to think of hoof care as a major part of your horse’s overall health and wellbeing — after all, it’s called “horse shoeing,” not “hoof shoeing,” for a reason!

Your horse’s hoof surrounds, protects, and supports bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, nerves, and an intricate vascular network. These vascular pathways — composed of arteries, veins, and capillaries— function as a key element in maintaining the health of the foot. That’s because the strength of the equine foot depends on nourishment provided by good circulation. By supporting healthy circulation, you’re ensuring nutrient-rich blood is pumping throughout the foot.

But how do you support healthy circulation? That’s where exercise and activity come in! In order to promote good blood flow, the frog and the solar (bottom) surface of the foot need to be engaged — in other words, your horse needs to get mov ing! Research

Minerals like copper and zinc have also been shown to support healthy hoof growth and help keep hooves strong. Lastly, remember how in step 3 we talked about the importance of healthy circulation? Well, you can support circulation from the inside, too! Look for a supplement that has ingredients to support blood flow and vascularity, like the amino acid arginine and the B vitamin niacinamide.

2024 Great American Insurance Group/USDF Regional Dressage Championships

A single Regional Dressage Championship program organized by the United States Dressage Federation (USDF), and recognized by the United States Equestrian Federation, Inc. (USEF), will be held in each of the nine USDF regions. In addition, Alaska and Hawai i may each hold state championships if an official request from a Group Member Organization (GMO) is received by April 1 of the prior year . The Regional Championship Program Rules can be found on the USDF website at www.usdf.org. Please refer to the 2024 USDF Member Guide for the comprehensive list of rules and requirements for this program.

Membership/Registration Requirements for Qualifying and Championships

All memberships and registrations/recordings must be correct and current at the time qualifying scores are earned and at the time of the championships.

Rider:

• Must have a USDF Participating* Membership (PM ).

• Must have a USEF membership (Active or Life).

Horse:

• Must have a USDF Lifetime Horse Registration ( LHR).

• Must have a USEF (Annual or Lifetime) Horse Recording.

• USDF horse registration and USEF horse recording must be in the name(s) of the current owner(s) or lessee(s). A horse is not required to have breed registry papers.

Owner:

• Must have a USDF Participating or Business Membership and a USEF membership (Active or Life Membership or Annual or Life Recorded Farm/Business). If the horse has more than one owner, at least one owner must have both active USEF membership and active USDF Participating or Business Membership and must be the owner of record with USEF and USDF. For a business or farm to be the valid owner under this requirement, it must be listed as an owner of the horse with both USEF and USDF.

* PMs are USDF members who join USDF directly. USDF Group Members (GM) are ineligible.

Minimum Qualifying Scores : One set of nationally -standardized qualifying scores has been established for all USEF/USDF Regional Championships, for Training Level through Grand Prix, in three divisions: open, adult amateur and junior/young rider. FEI Junior and FEI Young Rider classes have only one respective division.

The minimum percentages are as follows:

US Dressage Finals Eligibility

The US Dressage Finals is an Invitational competition using the USEF/USDF Regional Championship program to qualify. Qualifyi ng takes place at each of the nine Great American/USDF Regional Dr essage Championships, based on either 1) Ranking in a Regional Championship Class or 2) Wild Card Eligibility. Either must be achieved at a Regional Championship in a class and eligible d ivision offered at the US Dressage Finals.

I. Qualification Based on Ranking in a Regional Championship Class:

Champion and Reserve Champion horse/rider comb inations for each level and eligible division from each of the nine Regional Championships will be automatically invited, provided the following three requirem ents are met: US Citizenship; Declaration of Intent completed by the deadline; and earning an e ligible ranking in a Regional Championship class.

Note: Beginning in 2023, Freestyle classes at Regional Championships will have two different classes per level, Open/Junior/Young Rider and Adult Amateur. The top two declared horse/rider combinations from the Ope n/Jr/YR Freestyle class and the top two declared Adult Amateur horse/rider combinations from the AA Freestyle class for each level from each of the nine Regional Championships will be automatically invited.

To be eligible for the Adult Amateur division in the Freestyles at the US Dressage Finals, competitors must check th e AA box on the Regional Championship entry form and must provide proof of Adult Amateur status prior to comp eting in their Regional Championship classes.

1) United States Citizenship Requirement: To compete in any US Dressage Finals class, the rider must b e a US citizen.

2) Declaration Requirement: The hor se/rider combination must dec lare their intention to partic ipate by completing the Declaration of Intent form by midnight on t he day prior to the first day of their Regional Championship competition (including any open class day before the start of championship classes). There is no fee to declare, but horse/rider combinations must declare at the level(s) and eligible division(s ) they intend to compe te in at the US Dressage Finals. 3) Ranking in a Regional Championship Class: Eligibility to enter US Dressage Finals classes is based on a horse/rider combination's ranking in a Regional Championship class. Champions and R eserve Champions in eligible c lasses will be automatically invited, as long as they have declared by the deadline. Note: In order to be named Champion a nd Reserve Champion in a Regional Championship class, a horse/rider combination must have achieved a sco re of 57% or higher.

In the event that the Champion and/or Reserve Champion d eclines the invitation, or are ineligible to compete in the US Dressage F inals, the horse/rider combination that has th e next highest ranking in the class will be eligible , providing they:

1. Are a US citizen.

2. Completed the Declaration of Intent for that par ticular level and division by the deadline.

3. Achieved the pre -requisite score of 57% or higher.

If that combination declines, the same process will be followed d own through the fifth ranked declared horse/rider combination for that Finals level and division .

No notifications will be issued beyond the fifth ranked, of declared horse/rider combination except as may be eligi ble through the Wild Card invitations described below.

II. Qualification Based on Wild Card Eligibility:

Horse/rider combinations w ho are not otherwise qualified to compete in the US Dressage Finals based on their Regional Championship ranking (see above) may be invited to participate in a Finals class by e arning a Wild Card score achie ved at one of the nine Regional Championships, pr ovided the following two requir ements are met: US Citizenship and earning an eligible Wild Card score in a Regional Cha mpionship class.

1) United States Citizenship Requirement: To compete in any US Dressage Finals class, the rider must be a US citizen.

2) Eligible Wild Card Score: Eligibility to enter US Dressage Finals classes is based on a Wild Card score earned in a Regional Championship class. For all levels and divisions fr om Training through Grand Prix , a horse/r ider combination that competes in a Re gional Championship class and a chieves a score at or above the scor e listed below for that level and division may compete in the same level and division at the US Dressage Finals.

Note: Horse/rider combina tions are n ot required to have filed a "Declaration of Intent" in order to recei ve a Wild Card invitation.

III. Invitations:

Invitations and notifications will be emailed to eligible/qualified h orse/rider combinations immediately after each Regional Championship. There will be t hree categor ies of emails:

1) Invitation emails will be se nt to the top two of the top five declared horse/rider comb inations.

2) Invitation emails will be sent to combinations eligible for a Wild Card.

3) Notification emails will be sent to the third to fifth declared horse/rider combinations, notifying them that they are on the reserve/alternate list and reminding them to check the website for any status changes that would make t hem eligible for an invitation.

In the event that an invited horse/rider combinati on scratches, invitations may be issu ed up to the start of the competition. Note: Competitors do not need to receive an actual invitation to nominate themselves for the US Dressage Finals. The entry system will have their eligibility status and they can nominate prior to receiving an email invitation.

IV. Nomination Requirement:

Nomination, including payme nt of the nomination fee, is required for participation in US Dressage Finals classes, whether qualifying through ranking in a Regional Championsh ip class or by Wild Card Eligibility. The nomination de adline is midnight, 96 hours after the last championship day in the regional c hampionship show in which the horse/r ider combination competed. Each US Dressage Finals horse/rider combination is requi red to complete the nom ination (preliminary entry) proce ss including the horse/rider c ombinations on the reserve/alternate list. The Nomination fee paid will be applied to the total amount due at Closing Date.

V. Entry Requirements

Completed entrie s for the US Dressage Finals must be received by the closing date, October 16, 2023 midnight Easte rn Time. Priority for all stabling requests (including stabling in Alltech B arns and for double st alls) will be based on the date of receipt of the COMPLETE online entry. Each online entry must include the following: full payment, fully signed 2023 US Dressage Finals entry form and signed USEF Waiver, current negative Coggins te st and curr ent Flu/Rhino Vaccine Record. All docum ents must be uploaded when you r eceive your online en try confirmation from Horseshowo ffice.com, that is emailed imm ediately to you after you enter onlin e. The last factor in determining stabling priority wi ll be the allotted number of Alltech stalls available per region
