h, the beauty of makeup! You’ve added your signature finishing touch and it looks so impeccably flawless. You glance at your reflection one final time before leaving the house and confidently strut your way through your daily chores feeling as graceful as ever. A couple of hours later, when the day gets rougher, you turn to your reflection for that confidence booster from earlier hours. But alas! That ‘impeccably flawless’ makeup you were so proud of looks nothing like what you left home with. Crease lines, blotchy eye shadows and fading lipstick – that’s definitely not what you were intending to flaunt. What went wrong? Well, you’ve missed an essential – ensuring that your makeup stays on just the way you left it. Here are 10 tips to lock your makeup in place and get you through the day as beautifully as you started. Exfoliate and moisturise Makeup is an art, you are the artist, and the canvas is your face; so, start clean. Exfoliate twice a week to keep dead skin off. An even skin surface ensures that makeup glides on smoothly. Before starting the makeup process, thoroughly wash your face and follow with a little moisturising. A common mistake is immediately layering the skin with other products and not waiting for the moisturiser to soak in. Always wait for 2-3 minutes after moisturising and then resume with the rest of the makeup. Use a primer If it’s going to be a long day, never underestimate the need of a primer. What a primer does is it gives the skin a smooth surface so as to allow the makeup to set on a strong base. It also acts as a layer in between to prevent your makeup from getting absorbed by the skin. The trick lies in choosing the right primer. Yes, just like any ordinary cream, primers come for dry and oily skin. There’s even a primer for tanned skin. If you are prone to dry skin, use a primer that has the right hydration so it keeps skin moisturised and your makeup intact. It will help fight those crease lines. On the other hand, oily skin that is prone to acne demands a more matte finish (no oily T-Zones here), so pick a primer with an oil-free formula.

Layering How you apply your makeup can go a long way to determine how you will look a few hours later. Let’s look at the principle that we’d use for applying nail polish — start with thin layers and gradually build it up. A single thick layer will look unnatural and eventually, quite cakey. Whether it is your eye makeup, lips or even the foundation, progress one thin layer at a time. Use eyeliner with eye shadow Think about how you powder off at the end to keep your foundation in place. A powdery eye shadow does the same job over your liner. You can stick to the liner of your preference — liquid, gel or pencil but follow through with a little eye shadow in the same colour. Using a precision brush, dab all over the lines with the shadow. It also works to give a very subtle smoky look. Use a blotting sheet Though we feel that touching up makeup with a little compact every now and then can rejuvenate our look, sadly it doesn’t. It results in buildup which eventually doesn’t help the creasing, blotting and smudging and can make you look really tired (even if you’re not). The best alternative to keep shine off is an aloe vera, green tea or mint infused blotting paper. Not only does it smell nice but also instantly freshens you up. And of course, it does the job better than the compact. Give your lips the necessary coating Lips are the first to start fading. But no, you don’t have to skip the morning coffee to keep your lipstick in place. The trick to long-lasting lipstick is a little concealer and powder. Start with a thin layer of concealer to coat the entire surface of the lips and use a lip liner to outline and fill in the lips. Bring in some translucent powder next and brush it all over. Now that your lips are prepped, grab your favourite lipstick and apply liberally. You’ll be pout-ready all through the day. Buy for the cause If you’re aiming to go from morning to night (or night to morning – we aren’t judging) with the same makeup, go for products that boast of doing

exactly the same job. Look out for foundations with labels that read ‘long-wear’ or ‘all-day’, and mascaras and liners that say ‘sweat-proof’ and ‘waterproof’. If humidity decides to start acting against you, these are the labels that will save your day. Of course, so long as you’ve bought it from brands that honour their commitments. Set it in After you’re done with everything, the final step to simply lock everything in place is the (often skipped) setting spray. The makeup setting spray works just like the hairspray – and we wouldn’t skip that when we’ve tactfully worked up an up-do, would we? Then why should it be any different for the face! Some sprays even come with a sunscreen, just in case you’re obsessing about the fact that you completely forgot about that bit when you started. Blow dry the lash curler To make the lashes look even more voluminous naturally and all day long, blow dry the lash curler with hot air for a few seconds and then let it cool down with another dash of cold air (usually double the time for the latter). Curl how you usually do and bat away. Keep your hands off Yes, we know you love to see how silky your skin feels. But if you’re one of those who keep touching your face to check for perfection (or out of mere habit), we find it absolutely necessary to say ‘Stop!’ Not only are you transferring dirt from your fingers and nails to your face but you’re doing a jolly good job in messing up the makeup you spent hours on earlier. You can flip out your pocket mirror for a quick glance as many times as you want, but do keep your hands off your face, and especially your eyes. — HiWeekend@timesofoman.com Antara Bose is a model turned fashion and beauty consultant. M

y chocolate and vanilla milkshake craving seems to have finally come to an end, at least for the next couple of months as I have found a place that gives me my usual creamy, milky fix but with staple flavours from the Persian land of Iran, right here in Muscat. Though cocoa will remain a favourite choice for many shake lovers, but these sips promise to serve an interesting taste that will rock your taste buds. Sajjad Juice, a franchise from Iran and located at Al Maha Street in Al Khuwair specialises in serving a variety of milk-based drinks, desserts and other thirst-quenchers, gives you a peek into Iran’s traditional staples that inspires an all-natural lifestyle habit. The brand has more than 18 branches in Iran, and last year they opened their first branch here. Iranians love pistachios and it is one of their favourite ingredients to add a crunchy taste to the desserts. So I was sure that this would be quite an experience. As I entered the place, it looked like a typical juice corner with fruits displayed on the counter and tropical coloured interiors. I grabbed the menu and glanced through its pages but was unable to decide what to order. Soon a gracious waiter Ali came to assist. I asked him if he could offer me the true taste of Iran and he recommended three flavours: Dates, peanut butter, and the most talked about pistachio. This place has a reputation for making the best pistachio milk you’ll ever taste, so it had to be one of the drinks to explore. Ali brought out my first cup of Irani-style shake. It was pistachio milk, a creamy milkshake mixed with a sweet hint of Iranian honey and blended with

crashed pistachios. The drink is all you could ask for on a hot-and-dry afternoon. It was truly refreshing. Its grainy and thick texture makes it a decadent dessert. As I cleared the cup, the second drink was placed on my table. Special dates cocktail, a thick, creamy shake made of mushed sweet dates, topped with a bunch of walnuts and shredded coconut, was quite a highlight. The sweet taste of dates mingling with creamy milk, flaky bits of coconut and crunchy nuts is to die for. Ask the waiter to slice a banana on top of it, you’ll love it. For the final sip, I tried the peanut butter milk, a thick milkshake mixed with fresh peanut butter and honey, topped with molten vanilla ice cream and adorned with pomegranate seeds. This wasn’t my favourite but it will surely be a hit for peanut butter fans. The strong taste of peanut is tamed down by the vanilla flavours. It was a great experience and certainly a different kind of a taste, something that’s only available at Sajjad Juice. And now that you have discovered this Iranian milkshake corner, make sure to stop by for a sip. — salim@timesofoman.com SAJJAD JUICE Al Maha Street, Al Khuwair 33, Bousher +968 9016 5695

Inspiring Transformation It takes immense courage, determination, and persistence along with plenty of self love to start you on your weight loss journey. Bosky Dutia shares about her weight loss goals. STORY SHRUTHI NAIR

“I

was a thin girl living in a fat girl’s body,” said Bosky, two years after she started her long and difficult yet most productive weight loss journey. As a teenager Bosky started stresseating. “I was always overweight and it was a vicious cycle. Somebody would make fun, I would go back home, feel miserable about it and eat because eating was my escape,” she said. While teenage years are supposed to be about school fun, blossoming little romances and some happy friendships, Bosky’s was filled with people picking on, thus disheartening and shattering her confidence. “I kept eating and eating until I lost count about how much I could eat,” she remembered. While teenage is the time when one goes through a lot of hormonal changes and you need supportive people, Bosky did not have any positive force, face, or voice. She kept on getting dragged down into the forbidden tunnel of depression. Once in college in a different country she was constantly bullied by her classmates and she remained friendless and miserable. “I’m not sure if I didn’t have friends because I was fat or if I was a horrible person,” she laughs while talking about the impenetrable, tough facade she donned to cope with all the tyranny. Her marital life too did not end up well and her weight became a hindrance there too. “I was told I was worthless every day until I reached 130kg,” she said. “With my pregnancy I put on another 25kg. When my daughter turned 3 months old I was 155kg.”

She knew that something had to change when her daughter was born and being a single mom added on to her worries. An extra 85 kg would make it both physically and emotionally taxing for her. However, she didn’t know how to start and didn’t have enough motivation for it. However, a couple of years later, it came to her strong and hard in the form of an innocent child’s words. “One day I was sitting with my friend when my daughter goes and asks him to play. “When my friend asked her to play with me she said mum’s always sleeping,” remembered Bosky. This hit her hard and was Bosky’s much needed push, that pushed her to train hard, eat healthy, and completely change her lifestyle. “I approached this friend of mine and asked him for help. He started weight training. He completely changed my diet and lifestyle.” According to Bosky, the first two weeks were worse than child birth for her. “I used to have three big meals a day which was cut down to 6 small meals. High protein, low carb, high fat.” Her best friend and coach ensured she followed the regime strictly. The first time she walked one kilometre

she remembered collapsing and wanting to give up, but he would never let her give up. “There were days when he would lock the fridge, snatch my plate and walk off, and even put a duct tape on my mouth as a punishment for cheating,” recalled Bosky. In fact she had even gone and paid money for surgery but on the day of the surgery, she panicked and decided against it. Turned out it was a good call, as two years later the overweight, underconfident, bullied Bosky had turned into a gorgeous, confident woman who had lost 85kg. Until today, after she has shed the extra pounds and looks gorgeous as ever, she makes sure to workout every morning (except on weekends) without fail and vows to continue to eat healthy. However, following her coach’s advise she never starves herself and being a foodie never compromises on the food she eats. “He used to tell me that if you have a craving, don’t stay away from it. Take a bite, roll it around your tongue, and move on,” she said. “I proudly eat whatever I want, whenever I want. I’ve just learnt my body signs to stop when my body says it’s enough,” she added. Today, Bosky goes to the beach to play football with her daughter and can have a good time running around and having fun with her and that is her biggest achievement. Not the random strangers appreciating her beauty, not the weight that shows on her scales, but her seven-year-old saying ‘Mom, let’s play longer’ and she being able to do it without the extra pounds stopping her from bringing a smile on her daughter’s face. —shruthi@timesofoman.com

STORY SWATI DASGUPTA

reast cancer is not just a physical illness. Apart from dealing with the different side effects while undergoing treatment it often brings up a wide range of emotional upheavals too. Be it something as simple as an angry emotional outburst to something as serious as depression or loneliness, women go through many changes and challenges in this journey. Highlighting on this pertinent issue Dr Nishat Shams from Ministry of Health says that emotional support to individuals diagnosed with breast cancer is as important as early diagnosis and treatment. Dr Nishat, who is currently doing a research on the psychological intervention of breast cancer along with few doctors at Sultan Qaboos University, feels a lot of awareness is needed when it comes to the psychological aspect of the illness. The research conducted in Oman is on those who have a conďŹ rmed diagnosis of breast cancer. “We are talking about Omani women between the age of 20-65 who are

residents of Oman, can speak Arabic language and has a confirmed diagnosis,” said Dr Nishat Shams while sharing details of her ongoing research study. Breast cancer is considered to be the most common cancer among women and the numbers of cases are rising,” said Dr Nishat. “The incidence of breast cancer increases in mid 20s and there is a sharp increase in late 40s. Despite the advancement in treatment and services provided, the findings suggest that majority of the women are diagnosed at a later stage of the disease like at the stage of 3 and 4,” she added. Talking about the delay in early detection and the rising cases of breast cancer in younger population Dr Nishat feels that a lot is to be attributed to the hereditary factor. “It has been recently found that there is a particular type of genetic presentation of breast cancer in Arab population which plays a substantial role in the rise. These findings suggest that the Arab population present with different genetic susceptibil-

ity pattern compared to others” she added. She said that the research also plans to focus on consanguinity that is marriages between the family members. But the study tells that the main reason for the delay in presentation is lack of knowledge regarding breast cancer. Interpretation of breast cancer is based on a woman’s pre existing knowledge, her previous experiences, self education, and observation. “Failure to identify and label the initial symptoms influences a woman’s decision to seek medical help. Sadly women in the Arab world often consider the early symptoms of breast cancer as harmless and that is one big reason for the delay,” she said. Lack of knowledge of self examination or not undergoing mammogram too delays the treatment process. “There was a study conducted in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Iran and they found that the majority of the participants said that they did not practise breast self examination. Some also said that they did not follow the self examination consistently,” said Dr Nishat. Raising serious concerns on this Dr Nishat said that during her research work she realised that most women lacked education on breast cancer. Many doctors whom she spoke to for her research had said that they faced refusal from patients when they wanted to teach them about self examination. “Probably it is the fear of diagnosis and staying in denial or embarrassment regarding the screening activity. Women whom I spoke to said that they did not share the news with anyone in the family except their husbands. Accessibility for breast cancer screening is also another reason for late detection. Many of the private clinics do not have the mammogram facility which delays the process,” she said. Dr Nishat feels that the psychological disorder in patients suffering from breast cancer has for long been ignored. Most breast cancer patients suffer from clinically psychological distress. Emotional disorders include loss of roles in personal and professional life. “When chemotherapy starts resulting in loss of hair, mastectomy or removal of breast, they cause immense psychological pain and anxiety in women thus generating a feeling of hopelessness. Moreover the burden of financial pressure if a woman chooses to go outside Oman for treatment is also an added factor,” said Dr Nishat. Among all the psychological distresses Dr Nishat mainly targeted depression and anxiety in her research. The level ranges from mild to severe distress and it could lead to more disastrous effects. “This could be in the form of anger, lack of sleep, poor appetite and lack of concentration which can cause decline in the quality of life. The concern of illness and fear of death are the main factors. Talking about religion and faith Dr Nishat feels that here it is a strong point. “Most women have strong faith in God and hence they take these challenges in a stronger way,” she said. —swati@timesofoman.com
