STORY ANTARA BOSE

S

Uncomfortable clothing Comfort is probably not the first attribute we look at when choosing a Halloween costume. Thigh-hugging spandex, belly-clenching corsets or knee-high boots that are two sizes smaller (but goes oh-so-well with that skirt) – we’ve all battled with our set of wardrobe discomforts. Carry a spare pair of shoes for the times you aren’t strutting around in your Halloween attire and use baby powder to reduce friction when slipping in and out of that rubbery costume. Use the right makeup remover: Different products need to be tackled differently. Latex based makeup can be peeled off after washing with warm water and regular soap. Petroleum jelly helps to remove more stubborn face paint. Can’t get that glue off ? Coconut oil can work wonders. However, sometimes, despite all the washing, some areas of the skin can still look a bit discoloured. A paste made out of baking soda and water can be used to counter this colour but can also make the skin very dry. Toothpaste and shaving cream are great alternatives and don’t dry out the skin as much. In short, be ready with ample amount of cotton balls, makeup removers, and wet wipes.

ure, you’ll look ghoulish enough with all that Halloween makeup this year on October 31; but what we are trying to do here is give you a little advice so you can make the most of the day and not end up carrying that hideous look over to the next. We’ve all battled them – colours that won’t come off, sore feet from ill-fitted footwear, and the worst of them all — breakouts and allergies. But it really doesn’t have to be that bad. Follow our little tips and you’ll be your dazzling self the next day. We promise, no one would tell the bright blue mutated avatar from last night, was you! Test old and new products We’re pretty certain you wouldn’t be resorting to your usual beauty kit for Halloween. If you are going to rummage through your drawers to pull out last year’s Halloween kit, make sure the products are still in a condition to be used. On the other hand, if you are thinking of experimenting with new products, it’s a good idea to try it in smaller quantities on the back of your hand to test for any allergic reactions a week or so before the final day. Keep it on for the entire evening as it sometimes takes a more prolonged application for irritation to show up initially. If you are breakout-free even after taking it off, the product is good to go. It’s also helpful to know exactly how much effort you’ll have to put in cleaning yourself up at the end of the night.

Don’t compromise on brands Going for a cheap alternative because ‘it’s just once a year’ isn’t advisable as the ill-effects of the chemicals in these products go beyond that one evening. Be extra cautious if you are using liquid latex products and make sure it’s from a brand you trust (look for the FDA mark). Glitters are always hard to get off, but using good cosmetic-grade glitter instead of picking it out from your craft box will make it less harsh on your skin. If you’re going in for a complete body paint, remember that cheaper brands sometimes can lead to extreme dryness of the skin and clogged pores where the paint can settle for the next couple of days; so you might end up looking blue (quite literally) for a while. Include moisturisers Keeping skin hydrated fixes half the problems. Prepare your skin for the evening; because once you’ve painted yourself in unimaginable colours and worked up the perfect ghoulish do, you’re also going to be working pretty hard to get that gunk off. The result –really parched skin. Layer the skin with some extra moisturising cream before loading the makeup (especially face paint). Even while remov-

ing makeup, use a cotton ball to dab on some lotion before diving into the cleansing routine. It helps to hydrate the skin before the entire ordeal. Colour and care Is wacky hair a part of your Halloween costume? Your best option is going in for clip-on wigs instead of spraying those tresses a brilliant pink. However, if you are one of those who just loves how your natural hair feels, and prefer colouring to clip-ons, temporary hair colours that can be washed off are a good option too. They don’t generally damage hair and the colour comes off easy. The problem, however, happens when the colouring is combined with heat styling and hairsprays. Crazy chemicals and extra heat don’t do those tresses any good and can leave you with dry, brittle and dull locks. Always follow through with intense nourishing masks and frequent hair-oiling sessions for a couple of weeks after the mayhem. Protect the peepers (and everything around it) If you’re using any form of adhesives, latex or glitter, steer clear of the area around the eyes. The skin around this area is especially thin and can be more sensitive. Glitter is common on Halloween, but remember — no matter how well you stick it, there are always going to be a few flakes that will fall off. Having glitter on your forehead, eyebrows or lashes means it’s bound to get into those eyes. This can cause irritation especially if you are wearing contact lenses too. And we all know what watery eyes can do to all that makeup!

Halloween Makeup Tips: And if you thought we’d just be rambling about what not to do, you were wrong! Here are some fun, quick and easy makeup tips you can incorporate. zPick up the lightest shade of foundation and concealer to achieve that pale, vampire look. zIf you are hesitant about red-lipstick, Halloween is the time you can experiment with all the reds fearlessly. You might even find a shade that you can carry forth to your everyday makeup. zRed lipstick can also double as fake blood. Want to know what else from your regular makeup box can double as Halloween makeup? That extensive eyeshadow palette (which has half the colours still untouched). Purples, browns and deep blues can be made to look like bruises. Just make sure the shadows are all matte finish. White-coloured contact lenses can change your entire look – making you look really, really scary. Don’t forget to seal the look with a makeup sealer; one with an extra long staying power. — HiWeekend@timesofoman.com

FOR INTENSE, GOAL-BASED WORKOUTS If you have got bored of the predictable gym routines and plain exercises then it’s time to join the new breed of fitness lovers at the Engine Room in Horizon Fitness where there is hardly a dull moment during workouts. STORY SHRUTHI NAIR

VOLUME 10 ISSUE 90 OCTOBER 5, 2017

T

hough I have been a member of several gyms and fitness centres in the past, when it comes to doing serious workout and exercising I need constant coaxing to do things effectively and efficiently. Years back as a member of the Horizon Fitness, I tried everything they had to offer; from the plain good old gym to their other exercise regimes, but as I didn’t opt for a personal trainer I ended up wasting time. Later at the aerobics class, which was quite fun as they had a different workout session every day, I could boost my stamina. That’s when I realised that it was probably time to up my game and so I decided to join the Engine Room. If the name sounds intimidating, then walk inside it to get a feel. With the bold coloured walls, the fancy workout equipment, and the surrounding cage, it doesn’t quite look like any of the other workout rooms that we normally see. Inside the room you will find few huge tyres, ropes, weight balls, among many other things. Initially I had thought not to venture into that room ever, but later I decided to give it a try. The Engine Room is the most no-nonsense place in the gym. People who are inside it mean business. There is no time to

waste, procrastinate, or while away. The one thing that makes the Engine Room ideal for fruitful workout is that there is not a moment when you’re not moving. And that is the fundamental principal of this room — constant movement. You get inside this room with a lot of energy, will power, and dedication and come out feeling extremely proud and supremely confident by what you have done and achieved in just 30 minutes. The high intensity workout includes pushing, pulling, twisting, lifting, and bending with the trainer whose stern voice will not let you stop. You get the best kind of cardio workout with the best kind of results that can be measured by the instructor. The heart rate of each person who has entered this room can be monitored by the instructor on the TV screen and that is how they measure how much effort you have put in. However, it is the feeling after the whole workout that will make you feel that every second in that dreadful room was totally worth it — both in terms of the long term result as well as the buzz that you feel soon after you come out of the room. — shruthi@timesofoman.com

Go Greek in Muscat STORY SHRUTHI NAIR • PHOTOS SUPPLIED

I

GREEK WAY At Bausher +968 9206 4637 Monday to Thursday: 5pm to 11.30pm Friday-Saturday: 12pm -11.30pm

’m not quite acquainted with the Greek culture or traditions except for Greek mythology that I would often read online or in comic books as a child. So obviously I hardly had any idea about Greek cuisine, which got me interested to visit Greek Way, Oman’s only authentic Greek restaurant. Although my job requires me to try out a number of restaurants and cafés, I am the kind of person who gets comfortable in one place and makes it my home. It is usually the ambiance and the location that helps me decide such a place, but this time it was the people running this place that helped me make the decision. Greek Way is a small, cosy Greek home (I say that because of the vibes) run by a husband who manages the business and the wife who prepares the most delicious meals. Although this place was started as a café where students from the neighbouring colleges could just come and chill and finish their homework, on public demand the menu started expanding to serve all kinds of Greek food. The thing about Greek food is that it is not spicy at all, but that shouldn’t make you think it is bland as it is replaced with a lot of other spices including cinnamon, basil, original oregano, rosemary, and thyme. The Greeks don’t really have a staple diet, but most of their dishes contain potato either as French fries, or as mashed potatoes, wedges and more. Vasileios Kalimeris, the owner, in a good humour told me that they don’t have the concept of healthy food, which is probably why Greeks are usually bigger in size. While talking to him, I was thrilled to have learnt so much about their culture just by being with him. When he was telling how the Greeks are usually loud and prefer to chat and laugh even while eating, a customer entered the restaurant and Vasileios rushed to attend to him. He ended up sitting with him enjoying a hearty conversation. Later, he explained that all Greeks who come to the restaurant expect that kind of hospitality, otherwise it is considered rude. Having learnt a good deal about the Greeks in general, I couldn’t wait to try out some of their dishes. One of their best selling meal is the Giros Pita and I just wasn’t surprised why. It is their closest equivalent to a chicken shawarma. Another hit is Strapatsada, which is traditional Greek recipe for scrambled eggs. It is dipped in tomato sauce and served with feta cheese that is imported from Greece, and capsicum. The Greeks also like to use eggplant in their dishes and moussaka is one such thing. It is ovenbaked eggplant with minced beef topped with homemade béchamel. Not a lot of their dishes have rice, but giouvarlakia is one of the few that is served as a thick textured soup with minced beef and rice meatballs dunked in it. On popular demand, they have even started serving steak and lamp chops and interesting seafood with a Greek touch and a homey taste given to each one of it. One thing you need to remember, if the servers forget to tell you is that the portions are huge because the Greeks like their plates filled. So if you are not a heavy eater then make sure you don’t order too much. —shruthi@timesofoman.com

In the mid-90s, a group of musicians introduced us to the world of heavy metal rock in Oman, paving the way for aspiring rockers-at -heart to this aggressive, adrenaline-kicking sound. They formed a new band called ‘Drop-D’ and are all set to rock on...

D

o you know that heavy metal rockers were present in town since the 90s? Yes, we had bands that would go crazy at local venues, unleashing their inner Bon Jovi to the crowd. Recently I had the pleasure of meeting the super talented folks from ‘Drop-D’; drummer Akbar Al Balushi, bassist Adil Al Mahrooqi, guitarist Adil Habib, keyboardist Issa Salim, and guitarist cum lead vocalist Socrates Ioannou of Cyprus, and they slayed my entire existence with their electrifying performances, transporting me to an arena rock concert, here in the Sultanate. The band is known in town for playing hard rock tunes and mixing pop music with their heavy metal aesthetics. They recently joined to start a new band dedicated to the rocker-atheart. And if you’re wondering what does ‘Drop-D’ means, it’s a music lingo that represents a string in an electric guitar. The band basically gathered the most talented and experienced bunch of rock aficionados and formed the ultimate band, bring-

ing different audiences together to celebrate the genre. How did these Omani rockstars end up in the heavy metal department? Adil Al Mahrooqi (guitarist), who plays by ear, started his journey way back in the 90s when he was in school. His passion for music and performing came to life after playing keyboard piano everyday at school, taming his fingers to the National Anthem. The students and teachers were his cheering audience. In 1996, he joined a local band called ‘Nibras’ that focused on Arabian music, then he experimented with a variety of instruments and ended up with an acoustic guitar in which he mastered. His strumming sessions were full of gypsy King-inspired, Spanish music. In 1998, a new sound caught his attention. He started playing the guitar. Soon after, he became a household name in town, performing at venues including the Grand Hyatt, InterContinental, and Route 66. During one of his performances, he crossed paths with his fellow drummer Akbar.

Akbar always had a penchant for music and his musical family came with an artistic background that loves and appreciate performance art. His father used to play a traditional instrument known as ‘lewa’ that he passed on to his son. After inheriting the traditional talent, Akbar became a renowned performer in his school. In 1997, the drummer experimented with acoustic guitar and then joined a band called ‘Al Mayasem’ until 2009. Akbar also played the conga, where he enjoyed banging the drum to Latin music. He performed at a variety of venues including Majan Hotel. After representing a few bands, he met Adil Al Mahrooqi and joined his band at the time, called the ‘T Band’. Today, he’s an experienced drummer with passion for punchy sounds. The third member is a Bahrain-born Adil Habib (bassist). He has a 27-years of fruitful music career as a singer and live performer in the Gulf. He was in a band called ‘Al Awtar’ alongside his friend Ahmad Al Najem. The band was one of the best six bands at Bahrain Festival. They released an album titled My Love and collaborated with other renowned Bahraini bands. Adil Habib moved to the Sultanate in 1997 to join a local Latin-inspired band ‘Al Majan’ as a bassist and singer. In 1998, the artist and his band embarked on a tour across the Gulf. He founded another band called ‘50-Degrees in 2007, which played a variety of genres such as jazz, blues, rock, reggae, Latin, and funk. He also participated in a number of gigs in India, China, and South Korea. Given his unconditional love for all types of music, he began experimenting with oriental sounds. “I always felt that I wanted more and more in music . So I joined the Oud Hobbies Association to learn more about oriental music and find out how to possibly integrate western in oriental music”. Today, he’s become a professional guitarist and joined the ultimate band of ‘Drop-D’. The final Omani member, Issa Salim (keyboardist) was a fan of music ever since he was little. “I received my first keyboard when I was only five years old, and I was fascinated by the sound of music straight away,” said Issa. The pianist started his musical journey at the age of 14, where he composed his very first music. At 17, he joined a band called ‘Al Amal’ in which he developed himself as an artist and polished his skills with a variety of instruments including acoustic and electric guitars, and perfected his musical taste in numerous genres, especially in jazz, flamenco, and classical music. Later on, he dived into Latin music alongside ‘Sabor Latino’ band. Today, he’s a proud member of the Omani rock group of ‘Drop-D’. “I am part of a band with some of the best musicians in Oman,” said Issa, adding that “we use our musical experience to feed off each other, and to produce a unique sound”. As for Socrates (lead vocalist), he is a guitarist, songwriter, mixing engineer, and producer with more than 20-years of experience in the field, especially in rock and metal genres. His a founding member of Cyprus metal band ‘SoulSteal’, which performed a number of international shows including in the UK and Malta, as well as headlined numerous festivals alongside A-listers. His influences are drawn from heavy atmospheric metal and modern rock. Now, he is fronting the local band in Oman. After the band was formed earlier this year, the audience went berserk. “It was a shock to everyone, because they’ve seen us in different bands before, but now we’re all in one” said Adil Al Mahrooqi. Even though there’s lack of support for local musicians, and the fact that all members have exhausting day jobs, they are determined to take ‘Drop-D’ to the forefront of music scene of Oman, giving the audience a new taste of hardcore rock. I attended one of their shows at Route 66 and my jaw dropped to the floor. I’ve never been a metal fanatic but seeing it live is a different experience. It was intense, vibrant, and quite entertaining. “The audience makes you feel special,” said Adil Al Mahrooqi. The future looks super bright for these game changers, they have already performed in Dubai, and are set to hit the stage in Bahrain. And this is just the beginning of their new era, the era of rock, and a lot of roll. — salim@timesofoman.com
