HI WEEKLY

In the world of fashion where rules change every day, how many of those decade-old conventions are still worth following? This week, we’re busting 10 myths that have been hindering your true fashion potential. STORY ANTARA BOSE

No heels for tall girls Called relatively tall for Asian/Middle Eastern standards, I personally still don’t get why ‘tall’ people shouldn’t wear high heels. If you’re blessed with a good height, there’s no harm in enhancing it (if we can still use that word for height) a little bit more. A few inches aren’t going to make you look like you suffer from gigantism. Heels, all the way; even if you are 6 feet. Think of all the gorgeous models on the Paris catwalk!

1

Maxi dresses aren’t for short girls And then we have the myth for the shorter ones. If the struggle of trying to match up to their taller friends wasn’t enough, now with this one, they would have to let go of all those lovely flowy gowns too. That would be unfair. But the good news is that they don’t need to follow this myth. Maxi dresses with the right colours can make even shorter girls look just as stunning. Go for single, bold colours in lightweight fabric to create that perfect breezy look.

2

Only dark pants if you’re bottom heavy We understand the whole notion of darker colours having the slimming effect but honestly, cuts also play a very vital role. A well-fitted pair of pants or a skirt, even if it’s a pure white, can look perfectly elegant on those who are bottomheavy. We’ll bust another myth while we’re here. Just make sure you’re wearing nude inner wear with your white pants. White doesn’t camouflage white. (We heard that oops!)

3

Match bags, shoes and oh, nail polish too We won’t say there is anything wrong with perfectly synchronised clothes though. If you have ample time, then by all means, you can go blue from head to toe. But there isn’t a definite need. Mix-and-match is the trend of the century. More than anything, it makes one look effortless; like they didn’t stay up a night before to match every item from their wardrobe. Imagine the pain of having to transfer the contents from one handbag to another every single time.

4

Gold and silver don’t go together A childhood myth that it’s about time we do away with. Gold and silver (just like black and navy blue) go perfectly well. And do you know what else you could throw in too? Bronze! The shades of three-coloured gold. The only thing to be kept in mind while sporting this fashion is the sheen of the metals. Don’t mix matte gold pieces with shiny silver items. It completely ruins the look.

5

Dressy clutches are meant for the night Like a long maroon evening gown with dainty little embellished clutch bag, you say? The norm. But how about you bring out a sequined silver clutch and pair it with your stone-washed jeans and a pretty top? We’ll assure you, it looks just as trendy. It’s like a dazzling accessory that deserves to catch the morning sun and adds that ‘bling’ to your daytime outfit.

6

No more than one bright colour We aren’t saying bring in all the colours of the rainbow in one outfit (let’s draw the line here a little, shall we) but just like the mix-and-match principle, we can bring a great amount of vibrancy in an ensemble by carefully adding multiple bright colours. Colour-blocking is the technique that comes in handy. Bring in a neutral shade in between two strong colours to balance the look. Let’s illustrate better — a bright-coloured top with a pastel skirt and bright shoes. The skirt balances the two strong colours it’s flanked with making the attire bold, yet not too over the top. A simple alternative is to go for multiple accessories in different colours that works as statement pieces while you sport an elegant pastel-shaded or monotone dress.

7

No denim on denim Busting the myth by saying denim on denim is just classy. It’s casual yet really chic. Just remember one golden rule – don’t wear the exact same shades on top and below. If you fancy darker jeans (they do make legs look slimmer) make sure your denim shirt is significantly lighter. If you’re playing it the other way around with lighter bottoms, make sure the top is at least two shades darker.

8

You are a particular size only Yes, so maybe it can give you a rough reference but that’s about it. You could be a size L at one store and an S in another and this holds true especially if you’re jumping between fast fashion and designer wear. We need to accept that sizes vary from brand to brand and even country to country. It’s always advisable to ignore that little size tag and actually see what looks good on you. And look at the bright side, you won’t feel guilty picking a size larger, and you’ll actually get the dress that fits you right.

9

No short dresses after you’ve aged Age is just a number; and as long as your legs don’t give away that number, short dresses shouldn’t be leaving your wardrobe. We’ve seen some of the most glamorous stars from yesteryears still looking elegantly stunning in their little black dresses. The only secret – they keep it simple. —HiWeekend@timesofoman.com

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY SALEM AFIFI

C

alling all hair fanatics, this week I’m going to blow your socks off with a new hair trend that’s been taking the hairstyling scene since earlier this year. If you are a fan of neon hair colours and vibrant, unique identities then you must have heard of the incredible Guy Tang, the mastermind behind the creation of outof-this-planet hair colours that look nothing short of amazing. He is the founder of Mydentity brand, which gave hairstylists a chance to let their creative juices flow onto the hair of their clients with colour palettes that are individually unique and pretty much awesome. From rainbow colours, to shades of blonde and everything in between Tang’s collection has it all. My fascination with Tang’s work began on Instagram, and as a fashion photographer, I have to keep up with what’s trending in the style department. The colours looked ubercool. I had to find out more about it, so I went to meet one of Muscat’s best and professional hairstylist Mykola Kuzmin to find out all about Mydentity.

Mykola is a hairstylist from Ukraine who has an unparalleled passion for fashion and style. I met him during one of my fashion photo-shoots and we’ve been working together ever since. One day, he called me with an idea to do a shoot using Tang’s products. He had ordered the colours from USA and decided to experiment with a quick photo shoot using two trendy colours of Mydentity collection: Silver Smoke and Rose Gold. The results were stunning. I had a quick interview with Mykola after the shoot to learn more about this miraculous brand. First, the styling was fantastic as usual. How did you end up in the hairstyling department? Well, I started with teaching, so my first occupation was a teacher of English and foreign literature. I have a Bachelor’s degree in it, but I felt like this is not for me and I’m more interested in fashion.

That’s interesting. So why not go for designing? Well, because I know that fashion is hard, and to become successful it’s even more harder. So I decided to choose an easier way on how to get to fashion, which is by doing hairstyling. Quite an idea for fashion lovers actually. Was coming to Oman on your bucket list? I was on a mission to get out of Ukraine because Ukraine is not quite trendy. It can be trendy, but trends come a bit later to the country. Instead I worked in crew ships which was a great experience, but I decided to stop and go to Dubai. I stayed there for like a month, but didn’t get offers that caught my attention. Oman offered me a job right away, so I decided to come here. Now it has been three years. It’s a different vibe than here. It is more interesting here than in Dubai, to me. Oman has a character. I guess both have their own individual charms. Now, let’s talk hair. The colours are absolutely stunning. What inspired you to experiment with Mydentity? I was inspired by Guy Tang, who is a genius when it comes to hair. I’m following him a lot. I watch his videos because he does a lot of videos when experimenting with any colour. He joined a brand called Olaplex that makes hair products. After getting that experience he launched his own brand that sells his experimented colours called, ‘Mydentity’ and it celebrates individuality and identity. So he creates new colours? Yes, and makes colours that weren’t popular and trendy. Green was once ugly, now it’s trendy. So what’s the hottest trend right now? Like the series ‘Orange is the New Black’, Grey is the new blonde! But in Oman people like to be blonde, which is nice and a bit challenging when it comes to Arabian hair because it’s more dark. It has more pigment in it, it’s stronger, but it is fun to style. Worldwide, the trend is denim, very dark ashy blue. Anything that could look like jeans basically. It looks nice but less vibrant.

Dresses: Meli’s by Reflection

What makes Mydentity colours unique and trendy? His colours are easy to blend, because there are lots of different boosters. And he has shades that no other brand has, for example, Silver Smoke, Dusty Lavender, and Rose Gold are quite unique colours. Thanks to him, we no longer have to mix 10 different colours to get a creative look, now we can just use one from his brand. It also has the best and most interesting selection of boosters, like charcoal and lavender. What’s a booster? It’s basically an enhancer for the colour. You pick the base colour and then add a booster to enhance it. Like if you use Rose Gold with lavender booster, you will get a less pinkish colour and more violet shade. Or you can add more pink to achieve a vibrant colour. For example, for Eva (model in pink) she’s wearing Silver Smoke. I added more charcoal booster in her roots to create a shady look on the roots, you can just play around. It’s super easy, less damaging, and safe, too. Talk to me about skin colour. Who can wear Mydentity colours? I always say to people that that’s a limit you put in yourself and your mind. The times are changing, in early 2000s Beyonce had dark or brown hair, now she’s blonde. She has a dark skin and she’s fully blonde. She looks amazing. So I don’t believe if having a dark skin limits you from getting blonde hair. So what if I want to try some of the colours? How would the procedure be? First we light up the hair colour to blonde and then dye the hair with Mydentity’s colours. You just need to understand that it’s a step-by-step process that may take time, especially if your hair is dark. Because it is a massive process to lighten it and still save the hair. Some hair take up to 12 hours, so it needs patience. —salim@timesofoman.com *Mydentity colours will debut in the Middle East next year, but if you fancy having an identity of your own inspired by Guy Tang, then book a session with Mykola for a creative makeover. SEAFOOD EXTRAVAGANZA What could be more tempting than having an all-you-can-eat buffet? One that offers you a treat from the ocean? Experience the seafood night at the Sheraton Oman Hotel and indulge in a delightful treat with treasures from the deep. STORY AND PHOTOS SALEM AFIFI

T

he seafood night at the Sheraton Oman Hotel has always been their signature with quite a following, as they served nothing but excellence and of course fresh-out-the-water fish goodness. After the hotel reopened last year the seafood tradition was brought back, and today the seafood night is the most sought-after affair for seafood connoisseurs. As my colleague and I arrived at the beautiful Courtyard, we were welcomed by friendly waiters who escorted us to our reserved table by the window. As I sat enjoying oceanic aromas that filled my nostril, the manager came and gave us a quick tour of what was on offer. The core concept of the night is of course seafood, but the way they incorporated a variety of cuisines into the buffet left me in amazement. Indoors, you can find hot and cold mezze, desserts, shrimp, and sushi, and my absolute favourite paella station. Outside, there’s a grilling station where they serve a variety of sea creatures including seabass, a pasta station for Italian food lovers, a fresh lumpia for Asian food aficionados, and a one-stop-shop for everything crabs. The hunger was kicking in, so I dived into cold mezze and shrimp salad, which tasted amazing. Then, I grabbed my plate and headed outdoors for some grilled goodness. The aroma of fire-kissed fish is just delicious. I took a bunch of shrimps and some seabass. What I love about grills is that the oceanic taste is well preserved and infused with smoky flavours. The

seabass was soft and full of flavours, and the springy prawns were just the way I like them — smoky and a bit crunchy. You can ask the chef to make it crunchier if you are a fan of crunchy grills, or you can opt for the alternative and order it slightly grilled. I was determined to fill up my plate, so I went to the crab station and took a couple of sandwiches made of crispy, deep-friend soft-shell crabs, splashed with a special in-house crab mayonnaise, topped with a bunch of lettuce and onion, and sandwiched on a fresh bun. The softness of the buns with the crispiness of crabs was quite delicious. I went back and got me third crab-on-a-bun treat, it was that good. After finishing my sandwiches, I was already full, but voices in my head kept on telling me to suck it up and try the paella. Well, trying the paella was a given, as it is my favourite Spanish dish. I ordered a small portion of the paella with mix of seafood and a bunch of vegetables. The dish was to die for, it tasted somewhat creamy with a tomato-based sauce. The dish was the pinnacle of all dishes here. A true highlight for the night. By the time I finished my wonderful rice dish, I was as full as one can be, but I left a tiny space on the left corner of my stomach, dedicated to the Asian fresh lumpia. I went to the station and asked for the tiniest portion possible. The chef was super friendly; she gave me a bit of history on the dish as she got crafty with it. It’s basically a delicacy made of crepe-like

sweet bread, and filled with your choice of either prawns or chicken, then topped with thin-cut slices of potatoes, sweet potatoes, and some greens, then folded and slathered with thick, creamy peanut sauce. The dish wasn’t my cup of tea, but it was a great experience. I enjoyed the sweet taste of the crepe as it blended with the creamy peanuts, but the filling didn’t work for me. Still, it’s a must-try for food lovers, it may end up becoming your favourite treat. Overall, my experience at Sheraton’s seafood night was excellent. The food was great, so was the service, the ambiance, and the live music. I had grilled fish, Spanish goodness, and taste of Asia, all in one night, what else could you ask for? I had my eye for the pasta station but shoving the food down my thought would’ve been a real struggle, so next time it will sure be the first station to savour. Till next time, Sheraton. — salim@timesofoman.com

STORY SHRUTHI NAIR

I

haven’t been to too many countries so far, but the two countries I’ve lived in has been extremes in so many ways. One country, India, homes a population of 1.3 billion and the other, Oman, has a humble 4 million people living in it. The availability of natural resources and its usage is also vastly different in both these countries and hence people’s approach towards them and their needs are equally varied too. Born in Oman, I was used to a peaceful lifestyle where overcrowding and traffic jams is something I only experienced occasionally. So naturally, when I went to Mumbai, it took me a while to adapt to the perpetually crowded, noisy, unorganised chaos that I eventually ended up falling in love with. However, it was after the conversation I had with Yusra Jaffer from the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) that I went back home and started thinking about all the places I’ve been in the past and tried to understand how I have harmed the environment. Yusra said that we need to treat the environment as our home. “We need to look at our environment as our home and the different species as members of our family,” she added. Something so simple that can easily be followed and be the solution of manyy environment-related problems. think about – we don’t litter our homes, we try to keep it clean Just th times, we don’t waste electricity or any other resources because at all time we know we will have to pay a price for and we don’t go around causon purpose to our family members instead try to keep ing any harm h safe. If all this were applied out of our homes wouldn’t the world them safe better place to live in? be a bette That is the same approach that the ESO has adopted since its inception in 2004. Prior to this there wasn’t much discussion about issues in Oman. The ESO being an NGO acted as a the environment enviro the government and other independent private secbridge between be tor bodies who wanted to include the environment in their CSR iniThe main aim of the ESO is to educate the public and raise tiatives. T awareness and find ways in which people can actively be involved in awarenes its conservation. conser In the last l 13 years, the ESO has been quite successful in spreadof conservation among the people in Oman and have ing the culture cu made sure sur that people remain actively involved in a number of activiundertaken by them. And when people volunteer ties and projects p interests with the sole objective of protecting mother with no vested v earth, that’s tha when you know that they have started treating the planet home. as their h Some of the important projects of the ESO that have helped achieve S this include: EGYPTIAN VULTURES Apparently Egyptian Vultures thrive in Oman. And the ESO found this out after months of intense research and studies. About 65 to 80 territorial pairs were found apart from 350 other individual Egyptian vultures in Masirah island after which the ESO started an intense programme to study the species in a broader geographical context. Conditions suitable for them to feed and breed were made by the efforts of the ESO as Oman was recognised as an important habitat for this bird species. WHALE AND DOLPHIN PROJECT Oman’s rich and mysterious underwater world is home to a large number of marine species. A number of issues were raised by the ESO in terms of the protection of marine life including having set guidelines for dolphin and whale watching, protections of the endangered Arabian humpback whales, and overall improvement in the conservation of cetaceans in Oman. The ESO have been able to tag 6 humpback whales to help study the whales better. TURTLE CONSERVATION Oman is one of the most ideal locations for turtles as 5 of the 7 species of turtles are found in Oman. An initial review in 2013 revealed that there was a decline in loggerhead turtles nesting on Masirah island. The team found a number of problems ranging from coastal development, beach driving, and entanglement in fishing nets. Since entanglement in fishing nets was seen as one of the biggest concerns, a number of initiatives to raise awareness and caution fishermen were also undertaken. The ESO has The ESO has a special team that specialises in turtle research and conservation and have been actively involved in spreading awareness about the importance of marine turtles. —shruthi@timesofoman.com
