ong gone are the days of wearing a plain, out-of-date dishdasha as people in town are becoming more and more aware of the latest trends that hit the market. They develop their unique sense of fashion that represents their individuality, which is what Dar Saaf is all about. The boutique is located behind the petrol station facing Al Mouj in North Al Hail and as you enter the store you will quickly realise that this is not your typical tailoring shop, where they measure you and throw a bunch of fabric rolls for you to choose from. Here it’s a classy game. The logo itself is one of my favourite in town, inspired by palm trees as Saaf literally translates to palm tree branch. A beautiful scent of elegant Oud is always filling the air, giving your nostril a scent to remember. The place has a humongous collection of luxe fabrics that are handcrafted to add a hint of glamour to your personality as it is known in town as the go-to place for men’s traditional dresses and its accessories. The fashion house carries a variety of traditional ensembles that complement your fashionable look, things such as genuine mussars from Kashmir, gold painted strips that add a royal touch, skilfully stitched dishdashas, which are matched with the mussar or kuma, giving you a customised look for celebrations and formal ceremonies. What I love about this place is the sense of style that the owners have; the catalogue is full of beautiful pastel colours as well as interesting dark shades. My absolute favourite is a black dishdasha with gold stitching that takes the form of tiny leaves, paired with a contrasting white mussar that has the same gold stitching. This is probably my next buy. It adds so much character and control to its wearer. As they say, wear the dishdasha and don’t let it wear you. Is this a real saying or just cooked- up? It doesn’t matter, as the point lies in making a statement and turning plain dishdashas to fashionable pieces that will surely turn heads. Dar Saaf offers a section for women as well, situated on the first floor where you will find a selection of stylish dresses and abayas designed by Ruqaiya Al Harthi, cofounder of the store. And, if you enjoyed the Oud scent at the store, head to their incense section and shop for some of the best Oud selections, crafted to perfection by experts to add that luxe flavour to your already fabulous dishdasha. So, empty up your closet and get here, you’ll be amazed how colours and stitches can change one’s look from boring to trendy. –salim@timesofoman.com

W

e all love to flaunt our eye makeup. The smoky eye-shadow, winged liners and extra long lashes — anything that can make those eyes look more dramatic. But what is often missed in the pursuit for those angelic eyes are the dangers that arise from not following the right beauty habits. No, don’t get us wrong, we don’t mean ditch all those colourful palettes and fancy brushes; all we’re saying is — learn to use them the way they are meant to be used. This week, let’s get down to beautifying those eyes, the right way. —HiWeekend@timesofoman.com

VOLUME 10 ISSUE 87 se p t em b e r 1 4 , 2 0 1 7

1

Be possessive When it comes to your makeup items, especially eyes, sharing is really not caring. It’s not advisable to share your mascaras, brushes, and any other makeup item. Insist on using your own mascaras if you are getting your makeup done at a salon and ensure that the brushes are cleaned well before they are used on you. The reason is simple — makeup tools act as carriers of infection if not cleaned properly; which means if it has been used on someone who has had the smallest eye infection, there are good chances you might be landing with one too. And that’s pretty gross.

2

Do a mock test for allergic reactions Let’s be real, we aren’t all chemists, and neither are we going to study the ingredients behind each and every makeup box. Certain brands use common ingredients for their line of products that sometimes might lead to unpleasant reactions. When trying a new brand, it’s a good idea to test a product for shorter periods before investing in buying the entire line of eye-makeup.

4

3

Stick to the use it’s meant for We like the idea of things being multipurpose but let’s go easy on that principle when it comes to eye makeup. Using the same pencil as eyeliner and lipliner at the same time can lead to spreading of germs.

All things glittery

7

Use a lash primer We all love mascaras to give our eyes the fullest ‘batting’ potential, but regular usage can make the lashes brittle. Prepping them with lash primer before applying mascara helps prevent breakage. Watch out for the ingredient ethyl alcohol and instead, go for brands that are paraben and phthalate free.

8

Makeup with eye infections Though it is needless to say that wearing eye makeup when you are already busy tackling an infection is a bad idea, a lot of us still wear makeup to hide a stye or another (not very pretty) infection. Make a note of the items you used when you had the infection and make sure you don’t continue using them even later. But honestly, we’d still say – skip the makeup.

Be wary of all that glitter (no, we aren’t going to use that cliché line about it not being gold) as it tends to flake and these flakes can get into the eyes and cause irritation. Those wearing contact lenses should try to avoid the extra glitter. And we all know the struggles of getting that glitter off (talk about being waterresistant). It can end up in clogged tear ducts and conditions like blepharitis.

9

Lubricate Heavy eye makeup (fake lashes, instantly come to mind) can dry eyes out and for some of us who suffer from the problem, repetitive dryness can severely cause irreversible damage to the eyes. Conditions like kerato-conjuctivitis (go Google) are really not pretty or comfortable and no amount of makeup can hide those monstrous red eyes. Simply lubricating the eyes with off-the-counter medications like artificial tears can go a long way to keep eyes feeling hydrated, fresh and reducing eye fatigue. Use a few drops before loading on the makeup and once you have it all off.

Be ready to give it up Yes, that mascara met all those promises of voluminous lashes, but if it has been over 3 months (and for those really clingy ones, a maximum of 6), it’s time to say bye-bye. If it’s dried up, don’t push it by adding water or even worse, saliva (excuse us for having to state that). For the forgetful ones, we suggest writing the date when opening a new bottle of mascara so you know when its expiry time. Other eye-makeup items do last longer than the mascara, but we must respect its shelf life nevertheless. It’s there for a reason!

6

Tight lining They say it really makes the eyes stand out. But tight-lining the eyelids can be tricky. If you are wearing contacts, be careful not to get any of the sketch ink in your eyes. Not only will it stain and make your contacts uncomfortable, but it can also lead to eye infections. Never risk trying to line your eyelids when you are in a moving vehicle as any sudden jerks can have you scratch your cornea. The damage is really not worth an evening without a liner. You’d rather people say you look sleepy than ‘Hey! You’re missing an eye.’

10

Cool those tired eyes While the right concealers might do the trick to cover those dark circles, giving those bags under your eyes the needed soothing attention is beneficial in the long run. Don’t throw away your tea bag; refrigerate them for a while and use it to cool those eyes. Cucumber slices also help to pull out the heat that is built up in those eyes. You won’t see those bags and dark circles disappearing completely and instantly but we do guarantee that your eyes will thank you. Let’s put it this way, makeup looks better if you have a healthy base.

Dining at Clouds is always a great experience; you are not only surrounded by the beautiful views of the Qurum Heights and Darsait but you also get to savour the authentic Lebanese versions of your favourite dishes such as mixed grill platters, shawarmas, and mezze. Last weekend, I was at Clouds for a quick lunch as my palate yearned for the taste of hummus and some fire-kissed kebabs. I headed to the place with my friends only to find out that there’s a new menu with interesting dishes to feast on, up in the air. Story and PHOTOGRAPHY Salim Al Afifi

C

louds introduced new additions to their already elaborate menu where they incorporated a variety of global dishes, treated with a touch of Lebanon. Some of the items were pretty interesting. I didn’t know where to start so I asked the friendly waiter to prepare something extra delicious for us, and he did not disappoint at all. We started with a refreshing drink made of pineapple, passion fruit, lemon, and a hint of mint. Passion fruit drinks are always delicious, so I had a great time sipping on this summery juice. It also had a piece of the fruit floating on the glass, which added a strong citrus flavour with a bit of pulps – loved it. For starters we had mezze dips with nuts followed by Norwegian salad, a plate of gardenfresh greens, garnished with sliced cherry tomatoes, and topped with smoked salmon. This was something different for me as I love my smoked fish on some form of bread. As I finished my salad, the third and final starter was placed on my table. It was shrimp wrapped in vermicelli, and served with Clouds’ sweet sauce. The crispiness of vermicelli, the springy texture of prawns, and the sweet taste of the Thai-inspired dip made this an enjoyable

treat. Starter portions are quite huge, so sharing is caring. The dishes in the main course were my absolute favourite; they mixed a variety of cuisines with that of Lebanese, and they added a few traditional delicacies, too. The first main was Clouds’ take on the popular sizzling steak with mushroom sauce dish. The steak was juicy and perfectly mingled with the peppery mushroom sauce. Then we dived into the clay pot shish tawook, a creamy, cheesy dish made of grilled chicken pieces, and cooked in a clay pot. This was the star of the show. The cream was thick and the chicken was juicy, giving you an all-star dish for the season. It is surely a must-try. The new additions look great for Clouds. Sometimes you may not be fancying the usual Lebanese cuisine, but desire a dining session with mountainous views that only Clouds can offer. Don’t miss the clay pot cheesy bowl. You’ll surely thank me later. –salim@timesofoman.com

Oman’s first Children’s Public Library, which has the slogan ‘Access to Knowledge is Our Right’, isn’t just a great initiative towards promoting the habit of reading but also offers a great setting.

O

ften, I have these lengthy, yet meaningful debates with my colleagues about the decline of print and the gradual rise of the digital media. But when it comes to books and novels, irrespective of all the e-books and online reading apps that we have been innundated with, paperback and hardcovers are here to stay in their full glory. From something as insignificant as the raw and fresh smell of the paper or the feel that you get on your fingers when you turn the pages while staying fully engrossed in the book, the pleasures of reading a printed book are plenty. And despite all the technological ease I would any day choose a book over an app and would prefer to read and fold the pages to mark where I stopped reading. My love for books and reading has been a habit that I developed as a child when smartphones, iPads and Xboxes weren’t invented. As clichéd as it may sound, books had actually become my best friend — a different genre in different grades. It started with the nursery rhymes and colouring books in the kindergarten to the bedtime storybooks with morals and slowly graduated to Enid Blyton books where I would resonate with the characters of Secret Seven and Famous Five and imagine being one of those children solving mysteries and saving the world. There were also books like Goosebumps and Spooksville that would give me the chills and make me feel the excitement but I wouldn’t dare touch them at night. And then in my early teenage years I was introduced to the world of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys, making me realise how my books were growing up along with me.

There are multiple books of different genres stacked spaciously without overcrowding. But times have changed. Now when I see children stuck up with gadgets, including my three-year-old nephew who needs his iPad to even eat peacefully, it saddens me as I know what they are missing out on. A whole world of imagination, knowledge, and literary creativity is what they might be deprived of for no fault of theirs. That’s probably why I appreciate the period I was born in. Although a millennial, I did grow up at that age when technology was just slowly emerging. But at the same time I am also fortunate enough to be a part of the explosive digital era where social media and technology aren’t a mere source of entertainment and information but they have become a basic necessity. So basically I got the best of both worlds while the generation after me are deprived of the wealth that the pre-digital eras simplicity had to offer. Well, the above rant is actually as a result of the sheer joy that I felt after learning about the Children’s Public Library that recently opened. Reading is a great habit that needs to be inculcated right from the childhood. While electronic tools and gadgets have replaced books, the lack of options for a place to read is also a factor that has made more children distance from books and closer to their phones. Oman’s first Children’s Public Library, which has the slogan ‘Access to Knowledge is Our Right’, isn’t just a great initiative towards

promoting the habit of reading but also offers a pretty great setting to do so. This multi-storeyed building is filled with colours, chatter, giggles, and life throughout the weekdays where children from different schools, age groups, and backgrounds come together to sit on the comfortable and vibrant bean bags and chairs and simply have a great time. There are multiple books of different genres kept on different shelves stacked spaciously without overcrowding. The variety that the library offers is impressive and the decor is so warm and welcoming that anybody would like to chill there enjoying the view of the greenery and mountains that the french windows offer. There is a little play area too with kitchen sets and other play tools where the tiny tots are seen playing when they get bored of reading. Although the aim of the library is to promote the habit of reading among the kids, they also have computers for kids that they can access. —shruthi@timesofoman.com
