DANCE TO AN AFRICAN BEAT

STORY SHRUTHI NAIR

IF YOU WANT EVERY MUSCLE IN YOUR BODY TO GET A WORKOUT THEN LEARN AFRICAN DANCE. THIS HIGH -INTENSITY FITNESS REGIME BURNS FAT, INCREASES STAMINA, AND IS FUN TOO.

VOLUME 10 ISSUE 88 SEPTEMBER 21, 2017

AFRICAN DANCE or Afro dance originated in Africa back during the tribal era, not so much as a form of entertainment but more as a form of expressing emotions, celebrations, and tribal rituals. Each tribe would have a different set of moves that were taught to the members by their tribe master from a very young age that were then passed on from generations. Later in the early 16th century the dance was predominantly practised in order to entertain themselves and also as a way of keeping their identities alive. Over time it fused with the European dance styles, but most Africans still tried to keep their culture alive as it is. However, in the later years some of the moves had to be changed in order to suit the rules of the state they were brought to. One of the things that made African dance unique was the fact that it was always polycentric i.e. each part or portion of the body moves to different rhythms within the music. These movements are known as isolations in choreographic terms. Knees are usually bent while performing an African dance as it is all about connecting with earth and deriving energy from the ground. It has a range of hop, skips, jumps, and some very strong leg work that oozes thrust and resistance. African dance, like other dance forms does involve a lot of technique and training, which is helped by the drumbeats that serve as the essence of the dance form. In Oman, the Legends Crew is one of the first to introduce this dance form to Oman in its studios. Only for women, this class can be treated as a great workout regime that can be both challenging and fun at the same time. Founded in 2008, the Crew has its studio in Mawaleh and holds classes on a regular basis for hiphop and the Afro dance. Their expert tutors have started their classes for women and teach basic steps and techniques that can be tried by everyone. —shruthi@timesofoman.com Legends Crew Call +968 9926 8133

An Authentic Thai Spa Experience

L

ocated strategically in thee heart of the business district of Ghala, the Centara Hotel Muscat is a fresh new ew take on business hotels. From welcoming travellers from across the border to being the perfect hub for quick business meetings, Centara promises ‘something to remember’ for all its guests. sts. I found my area of interest when their exclusive spa Cenvaree called out to me. Greeted with joined hands and a bow, I knew Centara really meant it when they said ‘authentic Thai spa’. With a team of experienced all-Thai staff, Cenvaree could proudly boast of having a range of the finest organic products especially brought in all the way from Thailand. As my therapist brought in my welcome drink, the smiling spa manager explained how hospitality formed a key element of all Thai traditions. Refreshing for summers and equally pleasing for winters, I was served with a glass of cold lemongrass tea and a face towel as I sat admiring the swanky interiors of this newly opened spa. Cenvaree has three single treatment rooms and a much larger couple’s room. With a strange fetish for tubs, a fair sized Jacuzzi at the far end of the couple’s room had me peering in and longing to dip my feet in the petal-garnished water. But I was beckoned by my own little hot water bowl. As I sifted petals with my toes, my masseuse began with gentle pressure on the sole. There’s something undeniably calming

about starting the sessions this way and I instantly knew I was in good hands. An interesting ingredient that is said to act as an anti-bacterial agent and which was now being poured onto my feet, was surprisingly our regular black tea (I instantly made a mental note to try this at home). Coupled with a generous dose of sea salt to aid in scrubbing, my feet were now ready to scamper to the massage bed where a pretty inviting little tray sat waiting to endow me with all its inherent healing. Leaving it to my therapist to decide, I was offered a De-Ageing Passion Fruit and Lemongrass Salt Scrub. No, it wasn’t because gravity had gotten the better of me, (though I can’t deny that disturbing thought did cross my mind; clearly ladies and ‘age’ don’t go well in the same line), but because the treatment has been a particular guest favourite. A symbiosis of the most exquisite fragrance and stress-relieving properties, this was exactly what I needed after a day’s filming outdoors. A hotel that receives business travellers from all over, I eventually realised why this particular treatment had become a preferred one. I climbed onto my bed, eager to embark on the journey of rejuvenation. The concoction that reminded me of deliciously blended caramel custard, was generously slathered on and massaged in. I could get the familiar feeling of the sea salt scrub that had tingled my feet earlier and stretched out comfortably as that same tingle took over every inch of my body. Just that this time, aiding sea salt in the scrub was jasmine rice, giving this otherwise buttery paste the grainy feel I was so beginning

The aromatherapy massage particularly complements the De-Ageing session and are threaded together with a common focus of soothing the mind, body, and soul.

to love. Along with peeling away dead skin cells, I was told it also boosts circulation in the body and I’m pretty certain I was actually feeling the rush (if it’s not too much of an exaggeration). Made with passion fruit, fresh milk, olive oil, and spiked with the signature lemongrass that is found in several other of Cenvaree’s treatments, the De-Ageing treatment goes right to the deepest layers of the skin, hydrating it from within. The sweet smell of the passion fruit infused with the calming aroma of lemongrass filled the air. Though the paste initially felt cold against my body, the perfectly maintained temperature and gentle kneading motions of my skilled masseuse made sure I was thoroughly enjoying the treatment. As I lay wrapped in all the goodness for a few moments, I could feel my skin screaming with gratitude.

A little beyond fragrances A quick shower revealed exactly how well this treatment had worked. I marvelled at the suppleness of my skin and couldn’t resist but run my fingers back and forth, taking pleasure of the smoothness it had acquired (excuse the vanity there, please). If left alone, I’m sure I could have been at it for a few more minutes but the eagerness of the following aromatherapy massage session led me back to the bed. The aromatherapy massage particularly complements the De-Ageing session and are threaded together with a common focus of soothing the mind, body, and soul. I mentally appreciated the beaming spa manager’s choice of a customised package. Concentrating on not just the superficial aspects of the spa, the

therapists here pay due heed to their guests, drawing attention to minute details and even anticipating their needs. Concentrating on relieving stress both physically and mentally, the aromatherapy massage comprised of gentle, smooth movements, where sore muscles are massaged with a choice of warm essential oils. While I stuck to my new found favourite – the lemongrass, there are three more equally enticing options to experiment with. An all-complementing blend of lavender, chamomile, and frankincense, together called the ‘relaxing’ oil seemed like it would be the local favourite while the lovers of all things floral could go for the ‘royal lotus’ essential oil. For those looking a little beyond just fragrances, skin rejuvenation and relaxation, the last one proved to be an interesting option. Infused with orange and black pepper this essential oil had anti-cellulite properties. While this splendid selection of essential oils could be used in other massage sessions like the Swedish and the Balinese massage, I reckoned that the anticellulite essential oil would go especially well with an intense session of a deep tissue massage. When the singing bowl resonated signifying the climax of a truly relaxing therapy, I was already planning my next session. As I sat sipping a cup of warm ginger tea with honey that was offered with some fresh melons, I scanned through their assorted spa menu. Cenvaree offers a unique selection of signature spa massages, but it was the Thai Herbal Ball that particularly caught my spa-greedy eyes. Famous for its various massage techniques, the Thai Herbal Ball Massage accorded for one of the most popular massages

in Thailand. An assortment of Thai herbs is warmed, put into a muslin cloth and tied together to make a ball. Specific pressure is then applied to targeted pressure areas with the ball itself. Though different traditional Thai healing centres use varying combinations to make this blissful ball, here we had extracts of ginger, lemongrass, kaffir lime, tamarind leaf, and plai offering its healing. The massage is further complemented with traditional techniques of a Thai massage – a form of massage that requires great skill to execute correctly. With professionals having over 10 years of experience in the field, I certainly had no doubts in their calibre. My masseuse had proved herself by tactfully tackling each of my problem areas, relieving all the tension from head to toe. As I put down my cup, I had half a mind to make my way back to that Jacuzzi I had missed dipping myself into. It would have been rather nice to have been served this cup of tea while I soaked in the goodness of bath milk, the tingling sea salts (please excuse my obsession with the ‘tingle’ – it usually lasts for a day) and the soothing aroma of essential oils. Hey, there’s always a next time. — HiWeekend@timesofoman.com

THE CONCEPT OF BUBBLE TEAS HAS BEEN BREWING IN MUSCAT FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW AND THERE IS A NEW KID IN THE BLOCK. VISIT MEITO AND MAKE 6,615,000 COMBINATIONS OF BUBBLE TEA.

W

hen I received an invite from Meito on their opening about a week back, the first thing that appealed to me was its name. Derived from the name of a couple, who were original founding members of the chain along with Lan Nguyen, the word in itself is an acronym that stands for Manage, Entertain, Invite, Think, and Offer. Meito is a warm, cosy place in Al Muzn Mall with a funky décor and funkier edibles. The walls are a ragged texture with fun facts hanging on it. It is a road facing ‘deli’, as some would like to call it, as it is a midway between a café and a restaurant. While amongst the many things they offer including salads, burgers, cakes, desserts, coffees, and a whole lot of beverages, their USP is bubble tea. A concept not very known to Oman, bubble tea is a fun drink, essentially made of 3 components – tea (green, jasmine, black milk tea), a flavour you prefer, and finally the topping which is the bubble. The bubbles that Meito offers are tapioca pearls, jellies and the most interesting bobas. I have had bubble tea before, but have never tried bobas bubble tea. These bubbles pop/burst as it touches the tongue. It feels a little like Seven Seas but unlike the sea cod, it’s not too hard to burst and you don’t have to rinse your mouth multiple times to remove the awful taste. Instead you will catch yourself enjoying the flavour that

the burst bubble adds to the tea in your mouth. The most fascinating fact is that you can make 6,615,000 combinations from the bubble tea options available at Meito. The six step process of choosing your tea includes choosing a tea base, size, temperature, flavour, and finally topping, which is beautifully displayed for you to choose from. When served, sip from the huge straws and feel the bubbles, burst, melt or play with your tongue and enjoy the tasty experience. Apart from bubble tea, Meito also has delicious burgers (angos beef and chicken), a variety of cheesecakes including Oman’s special lotus cheesecake, pastas, and a range of salads. In fact, the salad bar from where you can refill your plate unlimited number of times is also going to start soon. Just when I thought that cafes and restaurants in Oman cannot innovate with regards to options and varieties, a store like Meito opens and reinstills by tastebuds’ faith in humanity.—shruthi@timesofoman.com

FROM BEAUTY AND GLAMOUR, TO SPECIAL EFFECTS AND HORROR, ISSA AL NAMANI, THE MUSCAT BORN TALENTED SPECIAL EFFECTS ARTIST SHOWS OFF HIS EERILY-REALISTIC WORK.

MAKEUP HAS CHANGED THE WAY WE SEE AND FEEL MOVIES

T

he motion picture industry would not be the same if makeup didn’t exist. It’s an art that puts the viewers a step closer to the character; it adds flavour to the story, and sets the mood for us. From the horrifying look of Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise, to the iconic Maleficent look that was played by Angelina Jolie, to the beautiful Marilyn Monroe with her signature blonde hair and red lipstick, makeup has changed the way we see and feel movies. It is, without a doubt, one of the most significant part of a film production, and in Oman we got our very own artist Issa Al Namani who dived deep into this creative field and became Oman’s most sought-after cinematic makeup artist. Issa is a Muscat-born makeup artist who mastered the craft of cinematic makeup artistry in all its glory, from beauty and glamour, to characters, special effects and horror. He is also an art director and a graphic artist. What a complete package! The 24-year-old had a unique vision that needed to be seen, but he couldn’t find ways to express it growing up. His life was fantastic but that sparkle was missing that was boiling deep inside his mind in hopes to see the light of day. Issa finished high school and attended an engineering school to pursue for a degree in mechanical engineering. In college, he was inspired by the artsy students of the campus who roamed around with their canvases and artworks. One day as he watched a bunch of theatre kids perform finally he decided to give art a try. At the age of 20, Issa began his journey of artistry by enrolling in an art class where he learnt how to use a brush and express a variety of things on a plain canvas. To him his drawings were a mess, but the atmosphere at that class made him feel comfortable and at home. In the days ahead he watched several YouTube videos to learn and master a technique, and also joined his fellow classmates to draw on location. Later he went on to work with local and regional artists for his college assignments, which helped him to move a step closer to his goal of becoming a professional painter. Drawing felt quite natural for the young man, but society wasn’t having it. His friends and those around him

began to make a joke out of his passion, especially because he was an engineer. But Issa was determined to continue his journey and serve his community with art. Issa realised that his art lacked his signature. He wanted people to view his work and his obsession to stand out from the rest was so immense that he had to search for something bigger and more unique. One day during his hunt for craft, he stumbled upon a video that appeared to be of someone with a messed up limb. He got curious so he clicked on that link to see what it was all about. After a couple of minutes he realised that it was all fake. The blood, the skin, and everything else that seemed so gory was done with makeup. That was the deciding moment for Issa. He chose the art of horror. While researching on this Issa found out that the makeup which consists of

special effects such as gory and bloody illusions is called cinematic makeup. It is character makeup that involves specific looks for targeted personalities and moods, and beauty makeup that hides imperfections. He didn’t even ponder over it and went ahead to learn all the three to be fully acquainted with the art of makeup. He soon established himself as a professional cinematic makeup artist, something which was lacking in Oman. Issa approached several local filmmakers for a chance to be part of their projects, and as you would guess, they were elated to have found a talented makeup artist. So they began developing scripts and scenarios with characters with cinematic makeup in mind. And that’s how he broke into the Omani production industry. “What really inspires you, Issa?” I asked. “Videos that show you do real

surgeries,” he replied. I thought for a second that he was joking but he kept a straight face. Yes, for his special effect makeup, Issa indulges in videos that give insight into the human body, literally. He even created a prosthetic limb for doctors to demonstrate to their students, which can be torn and stitched. Sounds interesting, and eerie too, isn’t it? Apart from gory videos, Issa gets his inspiration from horror films, as well as music. He enjoys listening to jazz records when he is drawing, and likes to pump up the volume and jam to pop music when he is working on the cool stuff of cinema. Similar to any other craft, it comes with a bunch of challenges. In Oman, he faced the dilemma of having no schools to teach this kind of art, and society is yet to fully accept it and support the art, but that is not keeping Issa from developing himself through the world wide web. In just four years he reached a level of success and confidence where he could teach on cinematic makeup. He already held nine workshops and hopes to do more in the future. Under his belt you’ll

find a number of projects including Oman Tahki for Oman TV where he worked for 19 hours for 10 days, a competition in Saudi Arabia where he won first place. Another competition in Oman was where he was crowned winner, and a third contest in Dubai in which he came in third. He also worked with Akkasa and Focus production house, and other projects between here and Dubai. He recently launched his own media production company called ‘Pixels’ where he does makeup, production, graphics, 3D, and a variety of media-related services. The future looks promising for this young man. His ultimate goal is to open an academy for cinematic art and makeup where he can pass his knowledge and passion to other aspiring artists around the country. With time and patience, Issa is sure to be one of the best special effects makeup artists in the region. -salim@timesofman.com *Follow him on Instagram and check out his latest creations @issawy93
