SLEEP YOUR WAY TO GET GORGEOUS
BEAUTY STORY ANTARA BOSE
T
he morning face. No, that’s not something you should be cringing at. So what is it that gets some people to wake up looking perfectly fresh, vibrant and naturally charming while others, reaching out aghast to their makeup kit before posting the morning selfie? The former ones just practice the right bedtime routine and sleep their way to morning radiance – as simple as that. We’ve got some tips you might want to start getting on with. Create the right ‘sleep’ ambiance If you’ve been to a spa or a meditation centre, you’ll know what we mean. The distinct fragrance that lingers in the air, the thoughtfully dimmed lights and even the faint music playing in the background – they all have a lot to do with relaxing you. Recreate a similar environment (to your liking) in your bedroom. Essential oils like lavender, chamomile, and jasmine have all been proven to aid sleep. Spray a little on your bed or add it to your diffuser. You’ll fall asleep quicker, sleep better (even if you’ve not been able to hit the 8 hour mark) and we all know that adequate sleep is essential for that healthy glow. Not to mention, you’ll wake up smelling nice and fancy too. Target and combat imperfections at night Your skin is working at its best to fix itself when you are asleep. So give it all the necessary aid it needs. Instead of walking around with zit-zapping patches and ‘invisible’ creams throughout the day, use the required treatment generously at night. The same holds true for all your face-packs, anti-ageing creams, moisturisers and so on. The extended contact period will help them all work better. Perfect your pout Night is the ideal time; when you don’t have to fight the temptation to lick off the cocoa butter lip balm (we get it, it tastes incredibly delicious) or keep re-touching your lipstick. Give your lips a little scrub to get rid of dry skin and slather on a generous amount of moisturising lip balm. You can even add a dollop of peppermint oil to plump it up for the morning, naturally.

Relax those eyes Drop the phone to start with; and we don’t mean on your face because you accidentally dozed off while texting. We mean, just put it away before you turn off the lights. Excessive straining of the eyes especially in the dark can cause droopy eyes (and that’s really not pretty). Besides, it stirs up everything in your system that can lead to disturbed sleep, thus sacrificing on the good night’s rest. Stretch out in bed and do some eye-exercises instead. It’s also a good time to pile on some eye cream (and honestly, it’s never too early to start). Refrigerate it for better results. Drink the right amount of water before bed Drink too much water just before bed and you’ll be waking up to multiple visits to the bathroom. About a glass or two before bed is ‘right’. But if you’ve been too busy to drink water throughout the day, we still have an alternative. Munch on some water-rich vegetables instead and swap the processed foods with some unsalted nuts. They’ll release water slowly as you sleep and keep you hydrated. Know your creams Especially the night from the day. There is a reason they have different labels — they work differently; so don’t mix them up. If you have oily skin, pick your moisturiser cautiously. Our skin tends to naturally secrete oil while we are asleep and using an oil-based moisturising cream on top of that, all through the night, will result in more harm than good. Be wary of what you put on your face during the night as this is something that’s going to stay on for a while and without your supervision. Avoid salty foodstuff before bedtime It causes bloating and can make your face, especially under eyes, look puffy. The reason is that excess salt leads to water retention in the body causing fluids to collect around the eyes (among other places). Propping your head up with an extra pillow is another way to combat puffy eyes. Double up the cleansing routine Yes, we all know the golden rule - ‘take off makeup before getting to bed’. It’s probably featured as the number one point on several occasions. But is just washing it off adequate? Turns out even water-based makeup removers might fall short. Solution: Do a double routine. All the long-wear makeup and waterproof mascaras really seem to do their job well these days, so it’s best to start with cleaning your face with petroleum jelly or any other oil based product. Wash off and repeat with a gentle cleanser. Keep your facial wipes next to your bed for the days you just can’t go through the entire routine. That way, you can wipe your face clean (at least relatively) even when you’ve already hit the sack. Bonus: Don’t forget your hands and feet They’ve had a day as busy as you and your otherwise always-attended-to face, so don’t leave them out. Rub on some moisturising hand cream, paying special attention to the cuticles and nails. We understand that wearing hand gloves to bed might be a little over the top for most, but getting into the habit of sleeping with socks on can do wonders to those who have dry feet. Massage in a bit of petroleum jelly and let your feet soak it up overnight. They’ll be beaming with suppleness in just a few days. …Or your hair No extra tight buns or ponytails at night; it creates stress on the scalp especially along the hairline causing breakage. If you have long hair, braid it well and pin it into a bun. Not only will it prevent your hair from getting tangled but it’ll also let you sleep better as you won’t be fighting your locks all through the night. For shorter tresses, simply tie a high, but fairly loose ponytail using one of those doughnut-sized hair-bands. Wrapping hair in a scarf also works to prevent it from breakage due to friction. —HiWeekend@timesofoman.com

STORY SHRUTHI NAIR
I
f you thought that hip hop is just people in loose oversized T-shirts and a cap freaking out to raps, then you are definitely mistaken. The story of this dance form dates back to the late 60s and has gone through an era of evolution and transformation to what it has become today. Originating from the famous New York borough Bronx, it started as breaking that gained popularity when a number of Hollywood films were either made on it or showed dancers doing some crazy steps and stunts to funk, rock, and rap music. The dance form portrayed people’s lifestyle, culture, and the fads of the moment and came to be known as a street dance style. Slowly with change in people’s tastes and music, the super upbeat and fast-paced breaking slowed down a notch to become a dance form that more and more people started performing. Hip hop freestyle emerged as a form of dance that was more suited to the popular music of the 80s. Hip hop isn’t a tame social dance. It is all about making a point and expressing various emotions through dance. It can be done aggressively or calmly yet strongly and evoke the feelings among the audiences. Today, there are a number of variations that come under the umbrella of hip hop. You would have seen people performing hand stands and headstands and other such stunts in tune with the music that is being played. Well, this athletic street style is called Bboying/B-girling. It stands for break-boying or break-girling and originally began among Puerto Rican an African American youth in the 70s. B-boy requires strength, foot work, speed, endurance, and a great deal of flexibility. There are an array of complex poses and steps including the windmill, backspin, drops, and lots more that usually makes the audience’s jaw drop every time the dance is performed by a group of street dancers. In Oman, the Legends Crew, that was started by a group of Omani boys who have been taking their hobby-turned-passion into a profession, provides hip hop lessons to a total of 25 students in Mawaleh. He, along with 10 other instructors, both male and female, are self-taught and have taken a keen interest in imparting their skills to all those who are interested. The crew has done numerous shows in Oman and other GCC countries and have gained recognition for their talent. B-boying, B-girling, krumping, locking, and popping are predominantly taught and a special Afro-dance for women has also been included in their list of dance forms due to public demand. —shruthi@timesofoman.com

t is that time of the year again. When your child cannot wake up to the afternoon sun, can’t eat, sleep, and play whenever they or their friends want, and also have to come back home and deal with this demon that they call homework. Yes, it is time for them to go back to school. For others who have already started their new term, life is all set in the daily routines of early morning alarms and loads of school work to attend to. But school is not always about homeworks and early rise; there are a number of other things that your child could look forward to as you send them back to school; all set and ready for a new term filled with new surprises, new lessons, and new kinds of fun. Apart from this, children also get to pick up some great new school accessories during this time of the year. Be it something funky or those which are value for money, it’s no doubt that they can attend the first day of school in style and it needn’t be an expensive affair. Heading back to school is also the
time when the pressure is more on the parents more than the children who have to plan and budget in advance before buying the school supplies. Centrepoint has something for boys, girls, toddlers, and teenagers. For little girls who are still not over the Frozen frenzy, go for the sassy bags that has Elsa and other characters from the movie on it. If your daughter is an evergreen lover of Hello Kitty, then you can go for that too. And if managing to wake up in the morning makes your son feel like a superhero, then choose the superhuman bags including Superman and Batman and unleash their superpowers. However, if you like to stay on the ground then you could even go for the Transformers and the Ferrari gear. If you thought they have all these options just in bags, then you are mistaken. You get a complete set of stylish pencil pouches, lunch boxes, water bottle and more, and if you’re wondering how all these mundane things could look stylish and exciting,

then you are in for a very pleasant surprise. For those who are at an age where all these bold characters on their bags are just tacky, there are some funky prints on bags for the classy teenagers. You will find boho blitz patterns, flower power designs, pop expression prints for an eye-catching gear. The range sports popular products from brands such as Hershel, Sackroots, Jworld, Jansport, Minmei, and Outsider in attractive prints and colours. And if you want your children to put their best foot forward then visit Shoemart for their wide range of black uniform shoes, white canvas sneakers, and sports shoes. That’s not all. The back to school shopping is a breeze at City Centre Qurum too where free school bags are being given away daily as part of the mall’s promotion which will be on till August 31. Along with that at Borders children can get high-quality books of all curriculums. Options are galore; buy without hurting your wallet. —shruthi@timesofoman.com

STORY OF AKKASA
BEHIND THE SCENES STORY SALIM AL AFIFI • PHOTOS SUPPLIED
Films have always been a powerful tool in delivering meaningful messages through visuals and narrations. Whether they make us laugh, feel sympathetic, or tear us apart, they will continue to be the strongest medium for storytellers everywhere. Akkasa, the production house in Oman, is keeping their stories alive through filmmaking.

always envied our neighbouring countries when it came to filmmaking and production, especially during Ramadan, when most Omanis would remain glued to their television sets to watch the traditional shows. While we did have our own programmes too, but nothing ever caught my interest. My disappointment came to an end when I came to know about a group of local talent called Akkasa who get together to shoot videos that will leave your jaw dropped to the floor. Akkasa is a production house that produces a variety of creative projects such as media production, scriptwriting, story boarding, production budgeting, production services, video shooting, directing, production managing, and post-production services like editing, colour correction, visual effects, and sound mixing. And, it’s an all-Omani talent and crew kind of a house made of eight passionate visionaries, which gives us all reasons to be super proud. I came across Akkasa when I was still studying in Malaysia, and I was stunned by the craftsmanship that the crew carries; their work is utterly polished and very professional (no exaggeration) and it made me realise that we do have a possibility to have a film industry in the country. Fast forward a couple of years, the house grew in talent and experience and got meatier with projects that have uber-cool visual effects. Earlier this week, I stopped by their studio in Bausher and had a quick chat with Akkasa’s CEO, Mohammed Al Harthy, and Mustafa Al Lawati, who is a talented film director and scriptwriter. The gentlemen gave me a warm welcome and introduced me to their working space to talk about their journey so far. Ahmed has always been a fan of films and creative motion. He and a bunch of his friends started shooting videos for fun while studying in college. Soon, they ventured into commercial projects, leaving their experimental phase behind and moved onto another adventure (or rather business). In 2011, Ahmed and Mustafa launched Akkasa Productions alongside their co-founder and film editor Salim Al Harbi. Growing up, Mohammed developed love for art and design. His inner artist came out to play when he was a sixth grader and soon he began exploring in photography. As he entered high school, he developed a passion for moving images and shifted from photography to video making. For Mustafa it was a different game; he was a man full of visions. Ever since he was a child he admired filmmaking. He was curious as to how it is made. His layers of raw talent began to unfold in the form of drawings as he loved to tell stories and make up scenarios. He also enjoyed playing with Legos, which made his scenarios a bit more believable and close to his vision. His passion grew so strong that one day he simulated a war scenario with real fire and ended up burning up the place. All of these shenanigans were a true indication that Mustafa’s future was in the film directing department, and his dramatic concepts can be seen interpreted in Akkasa’s productions.

“What inspires you?” I asked. “We watch a lot of short films, advertisements, and even animations. These elements have significance in feeding your imagination,” Mohammed said. “Instrumentals are my number one source of inspiration, and I also watch a lot of independent films,” Mustafa added. Akkasa’s portfolio is replete with interesting materials. They have loads of projects, but I was intrigued by two in particular. The first is called ‘Oman Tahhki’ which translates to Omani Stories, a narrative show that tells tales from the past, depicting iconic moments that took place in our history. The project was made with visual effects and graphics that left me in awe, and kept trending for quite some time on Twitter. It’s an effort that’s celebrated by many locals including myself. And, they released an original song for it. The show has a 300 movie vibe that you shouldn’t miss. My second favourite is a short film, Viking vs Alien in which the directing, cinematography, and visual effects were on point. Migrated Manuscripts is another major project aired during Ramadan, which is a mockumentary that involved shootingmanuscripts of locals who migrated to other counties and left their marks there. The project was filmed in six countries; Russia, Turkey, Poland, Italy, France, and the UK, collecting manuscripts from libraries, universities, and museums. Some scenes were shot in Nizwa, Manah, and Bahla in Oman. Other projects include Salam Air, Sultan Qaboos University, and ministries to name a few. So with a team like Akkasa’s, why we still don’t have a proper feature film? Well, that’s because Oman is still growing. “Oman

has a ton of potential for cinema,” said Mustafa, adding that “it has diversity in land and terrain, which can easily become a base for kick-starting international-standard cinema.” Mustafa thanked the rich and diverse Omani culture and said that we have many stories to tell, which can inspire thousands. And, cinema-goers are rapidly growing in numbers, too. But he said that though we have amazing sceneries and cultural context, we still lack experts and support to drive these stories to fruition. “For many people in the region, creative industry is considered a hobby, it could be a craft for when you are free, but the perception makes the trade less valued,” said Mohammed. “We need to change that perception by raising awareness,” he added. The production house’s main goal is to be a major film production house that produces and makes Omani movies that will be of international standard and get the opportunity to be previewed and celebrated at cinemas, and to also create a base for cinema production in Oman. Given what I’ve seen from them, their dream is soon to become a reality. Akkasa is currently one of the most talked about production houses in town, and that is a living proof that a film industry can thrive in Oman, if there’s enough resources and support. With such imaginative minds’ full creative juice, their future projects are ought to be nothing short of stunning. — salim@timesofoman.com *Follow Akkasa on Instagram for latest updates on their projects and films: @Akkasafilms
