WHY FLY WHEN YOU CAN SKI ON WATER? STORY SHRUTHI NAIR
VOLUME 10 ISSUE 100 DECEMBER 14, 2017
man’s waterbodies are just so dynamic in nature that even after 23 years of knowing and experiencing it, it never fails to amuse me. Sometimes its so calm and peaceful that it feels like meditation, some other times it’s just romantically serene that you’d just want to walk by the shore with a partner and then there are times when it is the ultimate place for some adrenaline rush boosting activities. One weekend I was at the Wave visiting a friend, who was taking us around the walk and the mall and finally the gorgeous marina that had a number of yachts of different sizes docked peacefully. However, when we moved further ahead is when we saw some thrilling action taking place. Immediately we got ourselves a jet ski session booked. At about 4 in the afternoon, we watched the sun’s rays bounce off the calm marina waters, perched on our jet skis waiting for our instructor to tell us how to use this machine we were all anxiously sitting on. He came and gave us a quick set of instructions, showed us a few hand signs to use because we wouldn’t be able to hear each other due to the engine noise and asked us to follow him. We did, initially without accelerating in the shallow area and letting the current draw us forward and once we reached the open ocean, we were allowed to go wild. These jets could go upto 90km/hr and I didn’t know it could.

So when I accelerated first, the jerk I felt blew the living daylights out of me. Slowly I started getting a hang of it and took off patiently feeling the cool sea breeze against my hair and skin while softly bouncing up and down on my seat every time the ski hit the wave. Slowly as I gained confidence and got comfortable I started increasing the speed and completed one full horizontal stretch at a consistent pace. And man, that was the most liberating feeling ever. It felt like I was flying and I was in complete control. The salt water would splash on my face, the wind would blow my hair, and I would move vigorously but everything just felt right and supremely exciting. The 20 minutes I was on the jet ski, I forgot about work and stress and everything that was worldly and got lost in this alternative universe with just the blue of the ocean and sky around. It is weird how I found peace doing an adventure sport; while my mind was calm, my entire body (hands, legs, torso, and everything) was working to control the ski and it did feel like a fruitful full body workout. I was so pumped up after fiwnishing my first ever jet ski session that I started enquiring about membership and weekly sessions as soon as I got off. Trust me, once you try this out you would want to go back again. — shruthi@ timesofoman.com Al Mouj Muscat +968 9261 1222

SERVING SWAHILI BARBECUE STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY SALEM AFIFI
I
t’s that time of the year where planning a family gathering and hosting a backyard cookout is on your list of things to do. Yes, winter has come, and we are all set and ready for bonfires and some fire-kissed grills, out in the open air, amid the smoky aromas of mishkak. Though in our household, we love our meats spiced up with hints from the Swahili coast, and as you’d guess, it’s as delicious as barbecues get. This week I’m inviting you to my kitchen to show you the way we marinate, grill, and have our barbecue cuts. I cannot help but get creative with the spices whenever I’m in close proximity to a dish, I can easily mix ketchup, honey, and a whole load of other things into the marinade for the sake of experimenting with flavours. So to be fair with you all, I have
invited two of my absolute favourite cooks who know how to put on a food show and entertain your taste buds. Meet Swahili food blogger Vanessa Mehri and foodie-at-heart Samiya Saud, two lovely ladies who know how to cook up a storm and serve you lip-smacking delicacies from East Africa and the region. After meeting the ladies, I got to find out great tips on Swahili-style barbecue to take my cookout party to the next level. So, without further ado, let’s get this party started. The Marinade In the Swahili culture, marination is key; how you soak and mix your meats is what sets the Swahili mishkak apart from that of locals. Vanessa likes to keep it simple with a barbecue staple

tamarind sauce and a generous pinch of salt and pepper, keeping the taste more meaty and full of juicy flavours. Samiya loves to add a bit of yoghurt to the mixture, as it tenderises the meat. Ingredients such as garlic cloves, chopped green peppers, onion, lime or lemon juice, and African chilli (also known as Pili Pili) can be found in the list of ingredients. After the mixing, let the meat mingle with the spices for a bit before grilling. Some foodlovers keep their meat in the marinade for a whole day, others like to have it fresh. It’s best to try both methods to see which one suits your taste buds. The Proteins When it comes to the meat, locals love their beefy escapades, but in the Swahili coast the barbecue game has quite a bit of variety. Though beef or lamb remains the king of chargrilled sessions, chicken, prawns, squid, and fish can be found in the list of items to barbecue, too. Omani-style mishkak that’s sold by the road is usually served on a skewer, by itself. For me, that’s a treat; I get to taste the juiciness of the meat in all its fatty glory. Vanessa on the other hand, likes to bedazzle her skewer and add flavour to the mishkak. There’s either bell peppers, tomatoes, or onions tucked between the meat. The taste is impeccable. The Sides Now, for those who like to have their mishkak with something a little extra on the side, we got you covered. In Oman, we enjoy having it with crispy Omani flat bread (which reminds me of Eid), but at our household we kick it Swahili-style all the way with staple sides. The first is the most important, which is Kachumbari, a spicy onion and tomato salad mixed with cubes of cucumber, garden-fresh coriander leaves, red chilli, and a dash of salt, served with a lime wedge. This is the pinnacle of all salads in East Africa, it works with rice-based dishes, as well as sandwiches, but savouring it with mishkak is a match made in heaven. For bread lovers, you can enjoy the meat with chapati flat breads, which are massive in size, and rougher in texture compared to parathas. Or, you can even have it with a loaf of bread. Alternatively, you can indulge a homemade ugali, a simple starch made from cornmeal, corn flour, or cassava flour. It’s a doughy delicacy that looks like cream of wheat. Just like breads in West, it’s a filler treat that accompanies almost any main dish. Having it with mishkak is a tradition that Swahili food lovers enjoy. It’s a must-try. The Condiment To balance out the barbecue crispiness that comes with the meats, you need a proper condiment, and I am not talking ketchup and mayonnaise kind of dips. In this culture we love our tamarind sauce a bit too much. It’s a popular option for a condiment when having barbecue, but there are varieties to how it’s served. Vanessa likes to have it blended with dates and chilli, which has an interesting zing to it. The sweet taste of dates mingle well with the mildly spicy chilli. The taste reminds me of Omani traditional dish of Orsiya (or as it’s called in Swahili, Boko Boko). Just perfect. Samiya is another hardcore fan of tamarind sauces. Her take on the sauce involves a bunch of garlic, black pepper, a hint of Nando’s mild Peri Peri sauce, and a splash of jalapeño Tabasco sauce. This is a killer dip, an absolute favourite of mine; the jalapeño mixed with the Nando’s sauce adds a tonne of character to the dip, making it the bomb of all mishkak sauces, literally. Others like to play around with their dips and experiment with different ingredients as well. In short, tamarind has to be on your shopping list before anything else. Now, go ahead and give it a try this weekend; you’ll thank me later. — salim@timesofoman.com

NTER WARDROBE MUST-HAVES STORY ANTARA BOSE
C
ontrary to popular beliefs, winters aren’t about dull apparel, heavy layering, and monotonous styling. Well, at least not in this part of the world. For most of us in Oman, winter is a season much looked forward to. And for our wardrobe, all we need are few winter basics to ensure we’ve embraced the winter look fashionably! Here are 11 items to bring out this winter.
Turtleneck pullovers Nothing says winter like a ribbed turtleneck sweater. And the best part is the versatility that it comes with. You can wear it with a blazer for office and then transit seamlessly to a dinner party later in the evening by coupling it with a pretty skirt and fancy boots. Throw-on long cardigans All you need to turn a skimpy summer dress to its winter acceptable form is a colourful cardigan. Get some in bright colours to liven up a gloomy day.
Leggings When the tops get bulky, leggings can create a great silhouette for your legs at least. As opposed to jeans, skintight leggings are also easier to slip into knee-high boots. Though blacks are evergreen, you can always experiment with other brighter colours.
Knitted slip-on dresses Winters tend to make one lazy; and clothes that come on and off easy become favourites. It’s, therefore, no surprise that warm slip-on dresses are a winter staple. Forget the thoughtful layering, just couple these with knee-high boots and you’ll look effortlessly, elegantly, winter ready.
Beanies Couple this with a coffee mug and you’ve got yourself a perfect winter shot right there. Beanies protect your head from dew, keep your ears warm, and make for a snug winter look. And no, you don’t necessarily have to go for ones that have pom-poms on the head.
Boots Ankle or knee-high, winter demands new footwear, and boots are the first that spring to mind. They come in a variety of materials, styles and colours, and can be worn with pretty much anything ‘wintery’ to make a statement of their own.
Hooded sweat jackets If you are one of those who suddenly develops a keen liking for long, outdoor runs in winter, these jackets are for you. Hey, your gym clothes can do with a winter addition too.
Snuggly scarves Long, thick ones that can double as blankets if required. But hey, scarves can be worn fashionably too. You can wrap them around your neck, throw it over bare shoulders or even use as a headscarf to keep the cold out of your ears.
A lightweight denim jacket A winter wardrobe without one of these? No way! When a forecasted cold winter day turns out to be a little warmer than expected, denim jackets are the smartest way to cover up without feeling out-of-place or uncomfortable. Crochet poncho And if you are tired of jackets, ponchos are the way to go this winter. It is feminine, comfortable and a welcome change from the regular sweaters. It’s also excellent to hide those few extra kilos that come with winter. Just make sure you’ve got yourself one in a fabric that will keep the cold out. Corduroy skirts Forget leather, bring out the corduroy skirts this winter. They are great for the daytime when you want to walk around and soak some sun. At other times, you can couple a corduroy skirt with leggings and a sweater for a classic winter look. — HiWeekend@timesofoman.com

OMAN’S WINTER WONDERLANDS If you want to enjoy the chilly weather, feel the winter sun and make full use of it while it lasts, then the best way would be to get out of your homes and explore the length and breadth of the Sultanate, as suggested by Salim and Shruthi. STORY SHRUTHI NAIR AND SALEM AFIFI • PHOTOS SALEM AFIFI, SUPPLIED
VOLUME 10 ISSUE 100 DECEMBER 14, 2017
I
remember one of my friends asking me once about the winters in Oman. I’d just casually said that we don’t really have winters, but it just gets slightly cooler than usual. But this year, I’m not sure if my tolerance for cold whether has gone down or if the gods wanted to prove me wrong, but it has been feeling like legit winter for almost two weeks now. This season is super exciting for me. Being an outdoor person, who can’t spend more than a couple of hours at home, the pleasant whether provides the perfect excuse to stay out and actually enjoy what the country has to offer without having to melt in the otherwise fierce sun. Hence, I thought that it might be a good idea to put together some of my favourite winter destinations in Oman that you could visit while the winter still lasts. Camping According to tourist reviews online, Oman proves to be an ideal camping destination. There are a number of camping ways that you could try in the vast country starting from setting up a basic

tent bought from Sultan Centre and setting up a campfire near it to the more sophisticated and recently trending glamping where you get to enjoy the best of both worlds i.e luxuries of life whilst being as close to your favourite natural spot as you want. The Sultanate is probably one of the rare few countries that is blessed with all the three topographical features that all nature lovers look for - mountain, desert, and beaches. So you might as well make use of it this chilly winter. Mountain The majestic mountains of Oman constitute a good percentage of Oman’s environment. Like the country’s relief features, the mountains too are varied and diverse. Two of my favourite Jebels (mountain in arabic) in Oman are Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams, both of wich are extremely picturesque and gorgeous in their own unique ways. Jebel Akhdar or the Green Mountains are perhaps the most vegetative part of Oman. With a range of flora and fauna, these mountains offer solace to nature lovers who get a chance to get
16

acquainted to different species of plants and trees found exclusively in this region. Jebel Akhdar is also famous for its wide plateau close to the summit, which is usually and ideal camping point. Try camping near the juniper trees or the trees that produce fruits such as apricots, plums, figs, grapes, apples and pears to sort your meal out during your chilly stay here. Jebel Shams, on the other hand is the highest peaks of Oman. Needless to say, it is also the coolest places in the country because, well, the higher you go the cooler it gets. The temperature is already lesser than -1 up there and is only expected to get cooler as the days go by. The best camping spot would be the An Nakhr Balcony, which is a deep ravine in between the rocky mountains. Desert Being a desert, it is not surprising at all that Oman has enough and more options when it comes to desert camping. However, what stuns me the most about Oman’s desert is how different the texture of sand is in different parts of the country, making me have a completely different experience in different deserts. Sharqiyah Sands is of course a top pick because of its easy accessibility and serene beauty. You can either be all ballsy and venture out on your own into the desert and set camp amidst the middle of absolute nowhere provided you’re confident that you won’t get lost or you could go for one of the many concrete camping options provided by travel agents and tour companies. Either ways, you won’t be able to escape the cool and will need to make sure that the campfire burns if you want to survive the night. The Empty Quarter is eerier and isn’t as commercial as Sharqiyah Sands. You will actually feel like you have left the world behind and entered into a no man’s land. Make sure you take every camping essential with you and try to keep it simple and not too complicated. The empty quarter is extremely warm during the summers and extremely cold during the winter. So if you are a fan of the extremes then go for it. Beaches You have numerous options when it comes to beaches. You’ll find blue, green, and transparent beaches and beaches that are highly saline or just moderately saline. You will find private, isolated beaches and those that are crowded with people especially during weekends. You will find beaches that are home to mishkak vendors and others that are home to turtles and other aquatic animals and amphibians. I can certainly not say that I have experienced all of this, but out of the few that I have been to my favourite beaches to camp by would be the Pebbles Beach and Damaniyat Island. The Pebbles Beach, which comes on the way to Sur is gorgeous blue beach with huge white pebbles adorning the shore. It is calm and breezy and pretty much isolated, which is ideal if you are looking for some private time with just your group. Also, you get to sleep under a blanket of stars when you are at this beach. Daminiyat Island, which is about an hour from Muscat is perfect for those who are into any kind of water activities including swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving etc. The tiny island surrounded by highly saline water comes to your rescue after a tiring day of exciting activitites where you can just chill with your pals and enjoy the nothingness and feel super close to nature. — shruthi@timesofoman.com

Hotels and Resorts If you’re feeling a little lavish and in the mood for some pampering, pick a destinantion and head to a resort for a quick weekend escape. Here in Oman, we have topographical variety that exist to blow you away, with mountainous views, beachfront cabanas, and high-end desert camps, there’s nothing you wouldn’t like, especially during this breezy season. So, what are my go-to options you ask? Well, I’ll take you to four of my absolute favourite places. Alila Jabal Akhdar Staying at Alila serves a vibe of its own; the traditional Omanistyle architecture that sits atop the mountains, blending seamlessly with its surroundings is what sets this place apart. The ambiance here will make you feel isolated from the hustle and bustle of city, offering a serene kind of a stay. Given its wintertime, Jabal Akhdar can get pretty chilly at times, but worry not, as you can always enjoy a hot beverage by the fire at the lounge, followed by a succulent 3-course dinner at Juniper restaurant, while savouring moments filled with views of Al Hajar Mountains that reminds you of how beautiful the Sultanate is. Once you’re here, plan your weekend to enjoy what the hotel and its neighbourhood have to offer. meet the local concierge
near the reception for an adventurous joyride to the famous Al Ayn village, where you can have a walk through the rose water distilleries, or perhaps you’d want to try climbing a rocky hill from which you will have a perfect view of the village, as well as the must-visit abandoned village. The View This is another hidden gem situated amid the clouds in Al Hamra. The View will give you a tranquil atmosphere while seated at your cabana-inspired rooms, which have balconies with views of Al Hamra, Bahla, and Nizwa town, and of course, killer views of the hilly roads around it. What I loved the most about this place is the fact that you are up in the air, suspended, which gives you goosebumps whenever you stay there. And, their swimming pool is one of the best in town; serving an infinity view to die for. At the place, you can ride a bike to visit nearby villages, or just stay in and enjoy a weekend in skies. Atana Musandam Resort Atana Musandam is what I call a beatuiful getaway. The hotel is tucked in North of the country, in Musandam. The place is
situated on land but offers a unique combination of sun, mountains, ocean, sand, and cool breeze, all before your eyes. You are promised a great experience. The place is nothing short of a trip to an Omani museum, from the traditional texture of the walls, to the artefacts perfectly hung and lit on the walls. Rustic, traditional feel all the way. You can enjoy a dip in its pool that overlooks oasis of water, or a dinner and a wam beverage at Al Mawra Restaurant. Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara Exploring the charms of Southern Oman has always been on my bucket list, as Salalah is known as the jewel of Oman that’s blessed with beds of greenery during the Khareef season, followed by slightly breezy winters. The experience can be taken a level up when staying at Al Baleed Resort. The beachfront luxury resort offers white sands and oasis with golden opportunities to mingle with creatures from the ocean. At the place, you can take a dive into a variety of activities that will add sparkles to your winter-in-Salalah. Activites such as snorkeling, scuba diving, traditional dhow boat excursions, and even fishing are all set and ready for you to experience. — salim@timesofoman.com
